Abstract
This PhD thesis comprises four empirical studies under the overall theme of unemployment and mental health problems. The ambition of the thesis is to gain further insight into the detrimental influence of unemployment on the risk of mental health problems and to investigate how mental health problems influence re-employment chances among the unemployed. The main data source used in this thesis is Danish registry data. Overall, findings from the thesis suggest that unemployment increases the risk of mental health problems for selected groups of individuals and that re-employment chances are negatively influenced by mental health problems and overall poor health.
