Secondly, it is yet another dilution of the already weak university culture at the University of Copenhagen. We already have no graduation ceremony. The alumni network is much weaker than the universities that UCPH wants to compare itself with. And it is hard to find graduation and student traditions at the university, which is almost 550 years old.<\/p>\n
A master’s title at the university cannot be equated with an online course on the internet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
By taking another step down this road of neglect, the university is allowing the relationship to its students to deteriorate further. Not least on a ceremonial level.<\/p>\n
Can’t you just print out the document yourself at home? No, because the symbolism and the respect for the diploma is still lost when the institution just passes back responsibility to the individual student. The truth is, you are left with either a sorry file or a sad printout on a thin piece of A4 paper.<\/p>\n
Don\u2019t misunderstand me, it’s not because I don’t welcome digitisation. Send the diploma digitally to e-Boks as a supplement to the physical certificate. This will make it easier to use the diploma in your job search, as management writes in the announcement. But don\u2019t let this turn into yet another austerity exercise gone wrong.<\/p>\n
Need for more ceremony, not less<\/h3>\n
I suggest instead that you do the exact opposite and start holding graduate ceremonies with the awarding of diplomas and visiting speakers from business, academia and government.<\/p>\n
I’m almost certain that UCPH with a little effort would be able to find funding for this through foundations or sponsors. Surely, someone will see the value of buying themselves a few minutes of speaking time to thousands of newly hatched students? It is a potential win-win.<\/p>\n
A master’s title at the university cannot be equated with an online course on the internet. A pdf file of a diploma and a standard letter should not belong to the a historical university that has the calibre of UCPH.<\/p>\n
Back to the drawing board, University of Copenhagen!<\/p>\n

The diploma has a strong symbolic value, and reflects the pride in having completed a higher education programme of long duration.<\/p>\n<h3>An already weak university culture<\/h3>\n<p>When the university chooses to drop the physical master’s degree diploma, it is not just digitising another document. No, you communicate an unfortunate message to the students. And you undermine the symbolic value that the student attributes to their university diploma, their title, and their entire degree programme.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO:<\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/graduation-has-always-been-lousy-at-danish-university\/\"> Graduation has always been lousy at Danish university<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Secondly, it is yet another dilution of the already weak university culture at the University of Copenhagen. We already have no graduation ceremony. The alumni network is much weaker than the universities that UCPH wants to compare itself with. And it is hard to find graduation and student traditions at the university, which is almost 550 years old.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A master’s title at the university cannot be equated with an online course on the internet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By taking another step down this road of neglect, the university is allowing the relationship to its students to deteriorate further. Not least on a ceremonial level.<\/p>\n<p>Can’t you just print out the document yourself at home? No, because the symbolism and the respect for the diploma is still lost when the institution just passes back responsibility to the individual student. The truth is, you are left with either a sorry file or a sad printout on a thin piece of A4 paper.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t misunderstand me, it’s not because I don’t welcome digitisation. Send the diploma digitally to e-Boks as a supplement to the physical certificate. This will make it easier to use the diploma in your job search, as management writes in the announcement. But don\u2019t let this turn into yet another austerity exercise gone wrong.<\/p>\n<h3>Need for more ceremony, not less<\/h3>\n<p>I suggest instead that you do the exact opposite and start holding graduate ceremonies with the awarding of diplomas and visiting speakers from business, academia and government.<\/p>\n<p>I’m almost certain that UCPH with a little effort would be able to find funding for this through foundations or sponsors. Surely, someone will see the value of buying themselves a few minutes of speaking time to thousands of newly hatched students? It is a potential win-win.<\/p>\n<p>A master’s title at the university cannot be equated with an online course on the internet. It is the Agency for Modernisation at the Ministry of Finance that has made this decision as part of a major digitisation drive, and at the University of Southern Denmark it has been like this already since 2018.\r\n<div class=\"factbox\">\r\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Paltry Danish pomp<\/p>\r\nDanish universities send their students out to the world with scant ceremony. This is unlike in many countries, that have caps, gowns, and top presiding officers conferring degrees on candidates in big graduation events.\r\n\r\nSometimes Danish study programmes try to make amends. Like this Copenhagen department that years ago simply gave <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/nice-thesis-here-is-your-smurf\/\">graduates a smurf figurine<\/a>.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\nIt comes as a bit of a disappointment after half a decade of toil that the paper to prove it can only be found among bank statements and letters from the insurance company in your e-Boks. But the termination of our student days has always been lousy.\r\n\r\nIn a <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/pathetic-that-the-university-of-copenhagen-is-dropping-its-physical-masters-diplomas\/\">featured comment, medical student Younes Subhi writes t<\/a>hat the digital diplomas are \u00bbdilution of the already weak university culture at the University of Copenhagen.\u00ab\r\n\r\nAt time of writing, the comment has received almost 500 likes on Facebook and many supportive comments. One of them states: \u00bbI agree completely. It is already a bit of a let down that your thesis defence has been cancelled due to the cutbacks. Now the end of the long education programme consists of you, one day, logging on to KUnet and taking note of the fact that you have been given a grade. It is so disappointing that absolutely nothing is done to celebrate the new master's degree graduates.\u00ab\r\n\r\nYounes Subhi's comment adds to a long-running discussion about why Danish universities are so bad at celebrating graduation. In 2013,\u00a0 a department at the University of Copenhagen tried to do something about the Danish thesis anti-climax. Here is your smurf<\/em><\/a>\r\n\r\nYounes Subhi writes in his featured comment that when you look back in the long history of this university, you do not find festive traditions associated with the completion of master's degree programmes.\r\n\r\nAnd this is true. In earlier times (prior to newer Danish university laws, study progress reforms, digitisation, corona epidemics and what-have-you), the University of Copenhagen did not organise major graduation parties either. Nobody took anyone\u2019s party away.\r\n\r\n\u00bbTraditionally, there have been some ceremonies at the university \u2013 the matriculation ceremony, for example: They always celebrated starting at university. And then you have had a tradition of celebrating the students who take a degree, say a doctoral degree, and today they still get a reception and a [secrettext face=\"doctoral ring\" text=\"Technically the new doctors don't get a ring, they get the option of ordering one on a mail address at the University of Copenhagen.\"],\u00ab says the university historian at the University of Copenhagen Morten Fink-Jensen.\n<!-- end of module 1 -->\nThe less fancy bachelor's and master's degrees never gave rise to too much of a do.\r\n\r\n\u00bbWhen they introduced exams for official offices at the end of the 18th century, they started no new traditions,\u00ab says Morten Fink-Jensen. \u00bbYou got an exam certificate in your hand when you completed your exam. It is possible that there was an unofficial celebration or speech, but not something that the university was formally responsible for.\u00ab\r\n\r\nIn fact, the \u2018dimittend\u2019, graduate, word was not always used for people who have completed a university degree programme. It was a word that meant upper secondary school students who had finished their studies, according to Morten Fink-Jensen.\r\n\r\n\u00bbIt later sneaked into the language when talking about graduates from the university.\u00ab\r\n\r\n[secrettext face=\"Law professor\" text=\"Actually professor emeritus.\"] Ditlev Tamm, who has written a book about the history of the University of Copenhagen, says that \u00bbthe more spectacular part of the festivities were always linked more to the beginning than the end.\u00ab\r\n\r\nBut why not go out with a bang? Ditlev Tamm has several theories.\r\n\r\nOne is that former students did not need a ceremonial pat on the back when they completed their studies.\r\n\r\n\u00bbStudents in the old days already felt better than everyone else, so they did not need others to tell them so. When they had got this far, they knew how good they were,\u00ab he says.\r\n\r\nAnother theory is that former students \u2013 after having studied seven, eight, nine or ten years \u2013 slipped into working life, and sometimes found it difficult to get permission to sit the exam and officially complete the programme.\r\n\r\n\u00bbUnder the [secrettext face=\"professorial regime\" text=\"Up until 1970 the professors made the decisions at the University of Copenhagen. Today they have lost a lot of this power.\"], the professors couldn\u2019t be bothered to conduct the exams, and you couldn't get hold of them when you wanted to submit. The exam was not that important, it was more important what you had learned. Sometimes it was simply difficult to finish, and it was a smoother transition, so there was not the same wish to mark the occasion.\u00ab\r\n\r\nA third theory is that the end of a study programme was not a time to party, but a time to get serious:\r\n\r\n\u00bbWhen you start at the university, you go to parties, and you go through a maturing process, which means that you do not have a party at the end. You have been trained to be a serious person, who will use what you have learned in the service of other people and in the service of society,\u00ab says Ditlev Tamm.\r\n<h3>In the old days, there were so few students that they all knew each other<\/h3>\r\nUniversity historian Morten Fink-Jensen is a graduate of the University of Copenhagen, and he understands why it may seem a bit disappointing not to get a physical copy of your diploma. But he says the university did not make a big thing out of the diploma during his studies either.\r\n\r\n\u00bbI remember my own from the 90s. It was nothing flashy, nothing you wanted to hang up on the wall.\u00ab\r\n\r\nHe says that, just as the Danish word for graduate \u2018dimittend\u2019 sneaked into university language, so the graduation parties turned up in several different places at UCPH. Each year, the medical doctors take the Hippocratic Oath during a solemn ceremony. At other places, like the Faculty of Theology, you also find different types of graduation party.\r\n<blockquote>\u00bbI remember my own from the 90s. It was nothing flashy, nothing you wanted to hang up on the wall.\u00ab\r\n<p class=\"quotee\">Morten Fink-Jensen, university historian at the University of Copenhagen<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\u00bbI think they have imported some things from abroad. There are a lot of students who \u2013 perhaps under the impression of what they know takes place at American universities \u2013 expect something similar at the University of Copenhagen,\u00ab says Morten Fink-Jensen.\r\n\r\nDitlev Tamm says that the need for a ceremony may be partly due to the historical development from elite universities to broader, popular universities.\r\n\r\n\u00bbWe need not go back more than a hundred years, and there were so few students that everyone knew everyone. Things that previously set you apart, no longer set you apart, and so there is a larger need to make a mark. The work for the individual is still there, you still need to study, whether you are one among many hundreds or studying alone \u2013 the work still needs to be done,\u00ab he says.\r\n<h3>A beautiful \u2013 and serious \u2013 vow would be a good thing<\/h3>\r\nThat is why Ditlev Tamm can also understand, he says, that students would like a ceremony. He reckons that it needs to have a certain weight, and looks to the traditions of the doctors Hippocratic Oath and the lawyer's oath as examples.\r\n\r\n\u00bbI think it would be a good idea if the deans organise a party, where a speech is held on how important it is that you as a graduate contribute to society, and that you confirm an oath. I find this vow very beautiful,\u00ab he says.\r\n\r\nThat the diploma itself turns up in your e-Boks and not your mail box should not be a big issue, Ditlev Tamm says.\r\n\r\nVice Director for the Education and Students unit at the University of Copenhagen, Rie Snekkerup, confirms that the digitisation of the master's diplomas does not stop departments from holding their own ceremonies and festivities. She can understand that students want to have one, she says.\r\n\r\nIn an email she says that the University of Copenhagen has a number of \u00bbbaseline principles\u00ab for a good study programme completion:\r\n\r\n\u00bbFor study programmes that do not have an oral master's thesis defence, a closing ceremony must be held locally [at department level, ed.] at least once a year for the new graduates. For study programmes with an oral master's thesis defence, the student has the opportunity to invite guests to the defence, and then subsequently be celebrated,\u00ab she writes.\r\n\r\nRie Snekkerup encourages students to bring up the issue in their study boards if they do not have a celebration in their study programmes, or if they have any requests for graduation celebrations.\n<!-- end of module 2 -->\n","post_title":"Graduation has always been lousy at Danish university","post_excerpt":"In the future, your master's diploma will turn up electronically in your electronic e-Boks.
