Almost 13,000 of the University of Copenhagen’s 20,661 applicants are women.<\/p>\n

12,915 women have applied to the University of Copenhagen<\/a> this year, and this is 5,169 more than the 7,746 men who chose to submit applications to the university.<\/p>\n

There is nothing new in the fact that more women apply to university than men. But the gap between the genders has increased by more than 1,000 since last year, when there were 4,164 more female applicants than men.<\/p>\n

Rie Snekkerup, who is Deputy Director for Education and Students at the University of Copenhagen, says that she finds it positive that more women have chosen to apply this year.<\/p>\n

\u00bbThis is good, but the numbers include increases in some of the more classic study programmes which often attract more women than men. It is the humanities programmes and, for example, medicine and psychology,\u00ab she says.<\/p>\n

Would you prefer a more even gender distribution on the study programmes?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00bbYes, I would like it to be more even. There is still an imbalance in terms of how many women apply, and how many men apply, for specific study programmes. The men are more likely to apply for the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science and so on.\u00ab<\/p>\n

Faculty of Science the only faculty with more male applicants<\/h3>\n

Rie Snekkerup says that she is happy with the boost to the humanities application numbers, but that she is unhappy with the fact that women seek out what is often referred to as the \u2018soft\u2019 subjects, while men more often apply to what are considered \u2018hard\u2019 subjects. She doesn\u2019t like the fact that these designations have stuck to the subject areas.<\/p>\n

If you look at the University of Copenhagen’s six faculties, it is only at the Faculty of Science that more men than women have applied. The gap here is a small one \u2013 2,565 women and 2,776 men have applied, that is, 211 more men. Study programmes like computer science, machine learning and physics, however, have got considerably more applications from men (respectively: Four times, five times, and more than twice as many).

\nThe Faculty of Humanities has received applications from 3,636 women and 2,110 men. Out of the faculty’s 34 bachelor’s degree programmes, only four of them, philosophy, history, musicology, and Eastern European studies have more men than women applicants. The same number of men and women (21 each) applied to get into the Latin programme.<\/p>\n

At the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, women make up a large majority across the board. More than seven times as many women as men want to study dental hygiene and veterinary medicine, more than five times as many women have applied to get into public health science, three times as many have applied for the dentistry programme, and more than twice as many women want to study medicine and pharmaceutical science. Medicine, which is the University of Copenhagen’s most popular programme, has received applications from 2,554 women and 1,087 men.<\/p>\n

\u00bbI am unsure about what you can do as an educational institution,\u00ab says Rie Snekkerup, \u00bbbecause I think it starts much earlier, in primary school and with the parents. Even though we are very gender conscious today, there are still unconscious mechanisms that help to shape young people\u2019s choices. It is the boys who are the geeks and who love to figure things out. And it is the women who do education and care.\u00ab<\/p>\n

\u00bbWe can probably do more\u00ab<\/h3>\n

Rie Snekkerup says that the university can certainly do its part through its marketing: \u00bbIt’s about how we describe the study programmes, the images that we choose, how we hold open house events, and all the small things.\u00ab<\/p>\n

Out of the 34 study programmes at the Faculty of Humanities, only four of them have more men than women applying for admission. And at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, more women than men have applied to all of the programmes.<\/p>\n

Should the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences start marketing themselves more towards the men?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00bbIt would be a great idea to work for attracting women to natural science study programmes and to attract men to the humanities degree programmes. I’m convinced that the individual study programmes also think about this in their recruitment, but we can probably do more,\u00ab says Rie Snekkerup.<\/p>\n

And there are mostly women applicants on all health science programmes.","use_post_excerpt":false},{"acf_fc_layout":"Byline","is_author":true,"contributors":false},{"acf_fc_layout":"Content","content":"<p>Almost 13,000 of the University of Copenhagen’s 20,661 applicants are women.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/studier.ku.dk\/bachelor\/ansoegning-og-optagelse\/optagelsesstatistik\/2020\/ansoegning-fordelt-koen\/\">12,915 women have applied to the University of Copenhagen<\/a> this year, and this is 5,169 more than the 7,746 men who chose to submit applications to the university.<\/p>\n<p>There is nothing new in the fact that more women apply to university than men. But the gap between the genders has increased by more than 1,000 since last year, when there were 4,164 more female applicants than men.<\/p>\n<p>Rie Snekkerup, who is Deputy Director for Education and Students at the University of Copenhagen, says that she finds it positive that more women have chosen to apply this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/adm\/universitypost\"><strong>SIGN UP FOR THE UNIVERSITY POST NEWSLETTER HERE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThis is good, but the numbers include increases in some of the more classic study programmes which often attract more women than men. It is the humanities programmes and, for example, medicine and psychology,\u00ab she says.<\/p>\n<p><em>Would you prefer a more even gender distribution on the study programmes?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00bbYes, I would like it to be more even. There is still an imbalance in terms of how many women apply, and how many men apply, for specific study programmes. The men are more likely to apply for the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science and so on.\u00ab<\/p>\n<h3>Faculty of Science the only faculty with more male applicants<\/h3>\n<p>Rie Snekkerup says that she is happy with the boost to the humanities application numbers, but that she is unhappy with the fact that women seek out what is often referred to as the \u2018soft\u2019 subjects, while men more often apply to what are considered \u2018hard\u2019 subjects. She doesn\u2019t like the fact that these designations have stuck to the subject areas.<\/p>\n<p>If you look at the University of Copenhagen’s six faculties, it is only at the Faculty of Science that more men than women have applied. The gap here is a small one \u2013 2,565 women and 2,776 men have applied, that is, 211 more men. Out of the faculty’s 34 bachelor’s degree programmes, only four of them, philosophy, history, musicology, and Eastern European studies have more men than women applicants. The same number of men and women (21 each) applied to get into the Latin programme.<\/p>\n<p>At the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, women make up a large majority across the board. More than seven times as many women as men want to study dental hygiene and veterinary medicine, more than five times as many women have applied to get into public health science, three times as many have applied for the dentistry programme, and more than twice as many women want to study medicine and pharmaceutical science. Medicine, which is the University of Copenhagen’s most popular programme, has received applications from 2,554 women and 1,087 men.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbI am unsure about what you can do as an educational institution,\u00ab says Rie Snekkerup, \u00bbbecause I think it starts much earlier, in primary school and with the parents. Even though we are very gender conscious today, there are still unconscious mechanisms that help to shape young people\u2019s choices. It is the boys who are the geeks and who love to figure things out. And it is the women who do education and care.\u00ab<\/p>\n<h3>\u00bbWe can probably do more\u00ab<\/h3>\n<p>Rie Snekkerup says that the university can certainly do its part through its marketing: \u00bbIt’s about how we describe the study programmes, the images that we choose, how we hold open house events, and all the small things.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>Out of the 34 study programmes at the Faculty of Humanities, only four of them have more men than women applying for admission. And at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, more women than men have applied to all of the programmes.<\/p>\n<p><em>Should the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences start marketing themselves more towards the men?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt would be a great idea to work for attracting women to natural science study programmes and to attract men to the humanities degree programmes.
