Documents leaked by US whistleblower Edward Snowden show that Denmark is part of an exclusive \u2018second-tier\u2019 group, named \u20189-Eyes\u2019, that collaborate on intelligence gathering, reports Seven59.dk and b.dk.<\/p>\n

The group of countries is an extension of the more elite 5-Eyes, which includes the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. <\/p>\n

Denmark, France, the Netherlands, and Norway join in to make 9-Eyes and enjoy access to more classified intelligence material than the third tier \u201814-Eyes\u2019 which numbers Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Sweden.<\/p>\n

Should come clean<\/h2>\n

Former head of Danish Intelligence (PET), Hans J\u00f8rgen Bonnichsen, said he wasn\u2019t surprised at Denmark\u2019s high ranking. He said:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have traditionally been closely linked to agencies such as the CIA since World War 2 and this has helped to build up the trust and respect that\u2019s decisive in the world of intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and Justice Minister Morten B\u00f8dskov have so far declined to comment on reports of any collaboration with foreign intelligence agencies but the Red\/ Greens have now called on them to come clean.<\/p>\n

Good reason to be mistrustful<\/h2>\n

\u201cThe government needs to provide some insight about the Americans\u2019 intelligence gathering and whether Danes\u2019 phones and e-mails have been monitored,\u201d said spokesman Nikolaj Villumsen.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople have good reason to be mistrustful and that won\u2019t go away unless the government helps to build confidence in PET and the collaboration that exists with other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n
