The entrance is positioned in the basement level and the façade is anonymous. It blends in perfectly with the surrounding red and yellow brick buildings of the northern part of Amager.

Hørhus Kollegiet has 192 residents and several bigger neighboring residence halls. This means it is not among the renowned dorms in Copenhagen. Nevertheless, the unobtrusive exterior conceals a living residence bursting social and active residents.

The neighborhood

Hørhus Kollegiet is located in the city district Sundbyvester, right between Islands Brygge’s attractive dwellings and Hørgården’s subsidized housings, a former ghetto. The dormitory is the outcome of a design competition and it was finished in 1972.

SEE THE FULL ‘DORMS DISCLOSED’ UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

From the kitchens and rooms facing west at the top of the eighth floor, you can almost get a panoramic view of the protected natural area Amager Fælled. At night, the nearby metro station, DR Byen, and Koncerthuset make a beautiful scene illuminating the area with white and blue colors. You might even be lucky to catch a view of Tivoli’s fireworks show.

To the east, the flat land of Amager spreads. On a windy day, the seaweed from the beach might travel all the way from Øresund to the dorm carrying a a rather distinct smell.

Close to both city and nature

Despite Amager’s tarnished reputation of being located at the outskirts of Copenhagen, you will find most of what you are looking for here. Shopping facilities are great at either Fields, Fisketorvet or Amagerbrogade, all equipped with cafés and restaurants too.

Transportation options are also great. The metro is a six-minute ride to the center and located just 400 meters from the dorm. There are several bus stops around the area as well. The dorm is within five minutes’ walk to University of Copenhagen’s Faculty of Humanities and the IT University of Copenhagen. Nature is just arond the corner and the protected area Amager Fælled is great for walking, biking or jogging. It is possible to swim in the ocean to both the east and west of the dorm.

The only thing you will not find plenty of in Amager is nightclubs. In return, you will find a lot of cheap local pubs and bars as well as a plethora of dorms throwing parties open to other dorms. Just recently, an association of party committees of the dorms of Amager was founded, named Kollegiefestværket. It works to give the residents new opportunities to bond and share experiences. Its first party was thrown in May and many more will come in the future.

Great facilities and rooms

The unfurnished 12.3 square meter rooms are equipped with balcony, bathroom and 100/100 MB internet connection. When the residents of the dorm are not isolating themselves in their rooms during exam periods, they meet in one of their floor’s two kitchens. Here they cook, watch a movie or play a game.

The residents of the dorm are mostly Danish but exchange students from around the world can be found on any floor. The dorm does a good job making a smooth transition for the many residents that move out from their parents’ houses. Everything from laundry to electricity to help from the caretaker is included in the rent. The dorm even has its own gym facilities, a tennis court, a soccer field and a music room.

A vibrant and vivid dorm

The dorm is an independent institution. This means that the residents themselves are in charge of the residence. In practice, engaged residents have the freedom to initiate activities through the residents’ council. Residents with special hobbies use this possibility to the benefit of the dorm.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.

This summer, a few people began working on an urban garden project, setting up trays with soil and sowing seeds. Next year, the dorm will probably have its very own supply of fresh herbs. A little less than a year ago, a handful of people started working on a dorm magazine whose first edition appeared both online and in the kitchens in July. The dorm also has its own band that plays at some of the parties. Besides these hobby-based projects, other projects are based on more practical concerns such as the safety of the dorm and water conservation.

Six parties and Café Coma

Six parties are held each year with around 50 attendants at the smallest and 150 at the largest. The ‘Tour des Cuisines’ unites both the floors and the entire dorm. Each floor is encouraged to decorate their floor’s shared facilities, come up with a game and serve a drink when the rest of the dorm is coming by for 30 minutes.

At midsummer, the dorm’s annual festival is held, and is open to everyone. The garden is transformed to a cool festival space where five bands are playing throughout the day and night, all culminating with a great party in the café.

The café is also the center to the weekly bar nights. Its’ laid back atmosphere with retro furniture, a pool table and foosball, makes it a perfect place to meet fellow residents. On weekdays, people meet to play a board game or a game on the Playstation 3 and now and then the projector will be turned on to watch soccer, Eurovision Song Contest or other events. If any of this sounds appealing, then come by at a party or a bar night and meet with the residents of Hørhus Kollegiet.

[If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it ‘Dorms Disclosed’]

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Amager may not rest high on most people’s top 10 dreams of location.

[This guide has been continually updated since it was first published in 2014. This is the area with boats on the channels, Christiania, and small houses in narrow streets. It has a homely atmosphere with village fools, drunks, and hipster Copenhageners living side by side.

Besides places to get a good cup of coffee, Christianshavn offers a ton of cultural activities, which are easily integrated into your everyday life.

If you want to get away you conveniently located right by the metro and some busses, which makes it cheap and easy to get back home, once you regret ever having left.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

I live in front of the community centre where citizens from the area have cheap coffee, learn to play the guitar or draw naked people. Lying in bed at night I hear people sitting outside talking, glasses clinking, and laughter filling the air. As a background to this I can often hear a guitar from another room or some girls singing along to old Spice Girls songs. And then there’s the smell of a well-toasted sandwich, just as you thought you weren’t hungry.

Only girl in the world

Waking up early in my dorm room is so quiet you forget that you are in the very heart of Copenhagen. The street is quiet as well as the hallway. Talking makes it seem like you are part of the only conversation in the world. This even though more than 150 students live here.

At Sofiegården there are co-habitations, two- and three-roomed apartments, and rooms like mine, which is around 25m2 with a door to my French balcony. And no, a French balcony is not actually a balcony but a door you open and then sit inside and spy on people on the street. Be aware that people bust you playing Big Brother if your soundtrack is too loud.

The life of a baron

Waking up, I can do as I please. I do not have to get dressed in order to go into the kitchen and I do not have to wait for anyone to be done taking a shower - I am the only one using it. This means that the only thing stopping me from constantly walking around naked and taking long showers is if I am running late, or thinking about the amount of water I am using.

Then I act like a responsible student, thinking about the environment, before I go have a princess-worthy breakfast. Going from paying an average rent in Copenhagen to only 2600 kroners a month makes me feel richer than I am, which I intend to use fully, living like a baron. At the moment I have my own gym and table tennis-room as well, as I have yet to meet anyone there. I would not mind being the sharing kind of baron though.

Besides having a room, which will be known in history for the room where I surprised everyone and became a professional table tennis player, there is plenty of ways to be active at Sofiegården. There’s a gym full of equipment, and now the village-sentiments appears again; you can join a group of residents once a week to go play badminton at the local school. It’s free and if you don’t like badminton you are free to suggest any other sport.

Get lost

Spending a warm evening in the big court with wine and cigarettes you will meet people with the same idea, whereas the rooftop terrace always is rather empty. You can also just cross the court and sit with your feet in the channels.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

If you prefer staying inside you can do everything from watching TV or reading a newspaper in the fireplace lounge, go crafting in the atelier or wood workshop, attend a movie night, study in the reading room or grow tomatoes in the hothouse.

If you have a project, a birthday party or whatever you need a kitchen and dinner party room for you can book The Red Room, or the banquet hall. All in all, you are free to do as you please. You don’t have any duties unless you have signed up for them. Here it is easy to live with other people around, yet stay out for days or spend an entire Sunday watching TV-shows, without feeling just slightly bad.

Slow down

If too lazy to organize a party yourself, you can just sign up for the events that Sofiegården plans. This weekend there was the first Friday-bar of the semester and in a few days there will be a get-together-dinner to welcome new residents. Meeting people here is fairly easy, as you can simply use the variety of common rooms in your everyday life.

Residents here study many different subjects, but it is normal to study a longer education, as you need at least two years left in order to even get the room. To make this difficult there is a waiting list, which is approximately three years long, so you either need to be a lot slower than the government wants you to be, or study something that takes forever.

My plan is to combine these two possibilities, because even if I have just moved in, I am already confident that Sofiegården will have to kick me out when time comes.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it 'Dorms Disclosed']

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Review: Sofiegården
Our student reviewer likes the Sofiegården student residence hall so much, she threatens to slow down her studies so she can stay livng there
[There is a more recent 2021 review of Borchs Kollegium here]

Store Kannikestræde 12, in the heart of the historical city center, a beautifully whitewashed building reaches towards the sky, an intellectual lighthouse towering between the main library and the famous Admiral Gjedde's courtyard. The dormitory currently houses 20 students of University of Copenhagen - all young, gifted, and handsome folk, who call themselves alumni of Borchs collegium.

Century old frenemies

Founded in 1691 by the multifaceted professor in philology, medicine and botany, Ole Borch, the dormitory has many traditions, some dating hundreds of years back.

These include celebrating the first snow with rum toddy in the garden and also the founder's birthday culminating in a splendid feast with abundances of port wine.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

The dormitory shares strong bonds with some of the other old dormitories in the city centre - the prominent Valkendorf, Vartov, Ehlers, and Regensen, the latter being the biggest and most famous of them, and therefore also subject to a fundamental hatred from all the others. The rivalry also exists between the other small dormitories, resulting in pranks, vandalism, and theft - though always in a friendly tone.

Step into Hogwarts

The student rooms differ in size, though not in price. Some have one big room. Others have two rooms, and the lucky few have two rooms and a mezzanine, literally making it a small apartment for the sheer price of 1.400 kroner. Incredible? Yes. Furnished? No.

The building itself stretches over five levels, three of them inhabited by humans. The ground floor holds five students sharing one kitchen, shower, and toilet. In addition to that, the library is also found here. Boasting hundreds of dusty books, some dating back before the 19th century, and a grand piano, it is quite the sight - and rather intimidating to newcomers.

But never judge a book by its cover. The first floor houses 7 people and the second 8, each floor sharing one kitchen, shower, and toilet. From the rooms facing the street, we can spy on drunken people in the street who are visiting 'Den Glade Gris' - the happy pig, in English - a place that truly lives up to its name. The alumni lucky enough to have a room facing the garden can enjoy the night's silence and the sight of other alumni studying/sunbathing in the summer. Quite the sight, at times.

To eat, to chat or to dance, that is the question

If you're not in the mood to cook, different food clubs will make you dinner several times a week at a cheap price. All in all, there is plenty of opportunities to eat together or just socialize around something else in the house.

Besides all of this, we have a cellar where the (free) washing machine is found. Other things worth mentioning down there, is the storage rooms, the workshop, and the wine cellar(!) where residents can find agents to help them pursuing all sorts of different objectives - getting clean clothes, fixing a bike (getting dirty clothes), or starting a party.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

Speaking of parties, we also enjoy the luxury of our very own ballroom, found on the top floor. Big parties and sometimes lectures are held here, and when it is vacant we often take pleasure in a game of table tennis in the light of the glorious disco ball. In the other end of the top floor is the TV room. Alumni do not seem to find any excuse small enough to spend an hour or three in its big, soft couches, watching a movie whilst at times waiting for their hangovers to lift.

Getting in

The alumni presently residing are responsible for running the dormitory on a daily basis. That includes garden work-days twice a year and other interchanging duties once every few months. Really, it isn't that hard and it helps establish a sense of ownership over the place, as well as shaping you up for eventually taking care of your own life, which some need more than others.

As for the alumni, they are a mix of students from the Humanities, Theology, and Science faculties. This is due to the constitution, which only allows students from mentioned faculties to move in. Also, you have to have finished at least two years of study before you can apply.

Despite that fact, we still boast a rather diverse crowd of people between 23 and 29 - only Danes at the moment - with an even gender distribution. This is entirely because we choose who moves in. Or, that is, two selected alumni read all applications every time a room is up for grabs, call some in for a talk and then pick whoever they feel fits in the best. Pure luxury.

Keep an eye on KU-net

The location makes it easy to satisfy any need a struggling student might have. Supermarkets, clothing shops, cafes, bars, and parks are just a few of the many offers within a five-minute bike radius. Especially worth mentioning is Paludan Bogcafé, a 30-second walk around the corner and an excellent place to study and maintain your caffeine addiction.

All in all, this must surely be the best place to stay for a student in all of Copenhagen! Though we expect everyone to participate in everyday maintenance we also get to decide many things about which direction we are moving in next. So - keep an eye out for entries on KU-net about vacant rooms, and you might just find yourself residing in our downtown chateau.

[This review has been written by a student reporter at the University Post.

Review: Borchs Kollegium (first review)
Students review their own housing and accommodation in Copenhagen. One of the hardest words for an international student to learn and awkwardly pronounce when a new Danish friend asks, “So, where do you live?”

When moving to Denmark for my Master’s, I had already experienced “residence life” in my first year of university back at home in Canada. So naturally, I was intrigued to see the similarities and differences in residence life in Copenhagen, Denmark.

And first off I can say, it is not referred to as residence life here in Denmark,
it is 'kollegium' life.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

Ikea on request

My one year and eight months of living in HVK has been divided between two rooms; a so-called international room and a Danish room. The difference? Absolutely nothing.

Each room is a Scandinavian-ly, white-walled, 10 square meter room equipped with an entrance way that includes a built in wardrobe and sink area. All international rooms are Ikea furnished (bed, desk, bookshelf, night table, lamp), however in the Danish rooms, furnishing is available upon request, which is the route I chose to take.

The rooms are small and cozy but still with enough space to dance like nobody is watching or house a visitor or two from back home. And hey, if you want to learn a new language or discover new music, you can simply open your window and take in all the sounds from the surrounding rooms. Once the windows are open, privacy is lost.

Sharing is nice

Each floor consists of 22 rooms, 2 kitchens, and 2 bathroom areas (3 showers and 3 toilets in total). Coming from a family of four girls, sharing kitchens and bathrooms hasn't been much of a problem to me.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

We have the luxury of a cleaning lady who keeps the bathrooms nice and tidy. But for the kitchens, we have to get down and dirty as the neatness of the kitchens are the floor's own responsibility.

As for other common areas, the basement is one big common area, divided into 5 rooms that contain things such as a 52 inch TV, couches, ping-pong table, football, pool table, workout equipment, and most importantly, a party room with a bar. This space all opens up to a medium-sized yard where you can relax and enjoy the sun (when it makes an appearance!) on the grass or picnic tables, or you can enjoy a BBQ with your floor-mates.

Far from the city

HVK is tucked away in Copenhagen NW just next to the A-line station stop, Emdrup station. The surrounding area is mainly residential housing with a few small supermarkets and a Fitness World within walking distance.

Also just up the road, there is a pond with a path, perfect for evening runs or romantic walks. With only a 5.5 km bike ride to Nørreport station, being a part of city life is accessible, but at times it can feel a bit removed. However, for those going to school at University of Copenhagen’s North Campus (like myself), a 7 minute bike ride down one road makes it quick and easy to get to early morning lectures.

Family time

One of the best things about living at HVK is the “family-like” atmosphere. Being in student housing of a smaller size (100 residents) and sharing everything but sheets, the social scene at HVK is very 'hyggelig'.

Each floor is a mini-family, filled with meal clubs, movie nights, kitchen parties and growing friendships. When the whole building gets together for different activities (always including drinking of course – even at the General Assembly) it is like having a big family reunion.

There is a lot of tradition in the building and as Danish culture goes, it is of course found in local party rituals. And what are they like? In one word: Drunk. For some reason, parties here are never without a theme. Personally, I love it! It makes things that much more enjoyable to watch guys prance around in dresses, or a male burlesque dancer spanking a dominatrix.

Party time

When living at HVK, I have had the opportunity to take part in many different parties including Tour de Cuisine, Tour de Mose, Half-Year parties, Thursday cafes and last but not least, the 36 hour bar, where the floor that drinks the most amount of beer wins a trophy. There is much more than drinking cheaply priced beers (3 for 20kr!!), this is when the spirit of 'kollegium' is most alive.

At some parties, dinner is cooked by one of the floors and served to the whole residence hall and at others, there is healthy competition between the floors with a soccer tournament (football for you Europeans) and of course, drinking games.

The people

Meeting people in the building is fairly easy, once again, because everything is shared. However, a bit of 'outgoing-ness' can go a long way. It is a fairly even mix of guys and girls, but the international-to-Danish ratio is a bit skewed at 25 pct. international to 75 pct. Danish. For internationals, this is a very nice way to experience Danish culture when moving to a new country. However, in the beginning, it can feel a bit intimidating when breaking into the floor.

The people living here range from 18 to 27, studying things from Educational Sciences to English Literature. Those living in Danish rooms can live here as long as they want to as long as they are studying. For those in international rooms, it is only allowed to live here for a year. However, depending on how involved you are in the building, it is possible to later end up in a Danish room, just as I have.

All-in-all, I have loved my time here at HVK. I have made many new friends from many different cultural backgrounds and it is going to be hard to leave my HVK family.

[If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it 'Dorms Disclosed']

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Review: Håndværkerkollegiet
Living at Håndværkerkollegiet is family-like.
