Known as the OMK by its residents, the building houses 300 students who are all struggling to balance their academic obligations with the temptations that life in the dormitory offers.

Life on the ten floors

Life at OMK is different whether you are so lucky as to live on the tenth floor, “the penthouse”, or on the first floor. On the tenth floor, you sip your morning coffee with the view of Copenhagen’s towers and green rusted roofs, and on New Year’s Eve, the kitchen is invaded by envious residents from the lower floors who make the journey up the stairs to see the fireworks.

On the first floor, however, the view that goes with the morning coffee is quite different. On the weekends, you can enjoy the sight of hungover guests who struggle to remember where they parked their bicycles the previous night, which makes for a rather entertaining pastime Saturday morning.

SEE THE FULL ‘DORMS DISCLOSED’ UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

Cramped for space

Regardless of what floor you live on, the student rooms are the same. There are two corridors on each floor, East and West, and in each corridor 15 people share a kitchen.

When living at OMK you almost inevitably become an expert in simple living. Your bedroom is simultaneously your living room and your study, and you cannot own more furniture than can be crammed into 12 m2. Sounds tempting? Well, actually it is not half bad. Every room is 16 m2 including a tiny hall with a fitted closet and a bathroom. The room also has a small French window which makes the, admittedly, small rooms seem bright and rather spacious for 12 m2. The kitchens are not impressively big either, but just big enough to seat all 15 people who share the kitchen at once.

Being 15 people sharing a kitchen requires a certain level of organisation, and though space can be tight in at times, we make it work. There are dining clubs several days a week, where we take turns cooking for each other, and in the summer time, the barbecue in the garden behind the building is a popular alternative to the kitchens.

A family feeling

Sharing a kitchen is more than just a matter of organisation. The kitchen is also the spot for late night kitchen parties when the disco ball is turned on, the floor is transformed to a dance floor, and the French window serves as the smokers’ corner.

Or it is the place where you hang out in the afternoon, when you do not want to sit in your room and study or in the evening for an hour of board games. In the morning, people try to wake up sharing the newspaper and listening to the radio, and when it is somebody’s birthday, the two neighbors make a splendid breakfast for everyone.

The kitchen is more than just a kitchen, and the people you share it with are more than just your hall mates. Living together so closely fosters a feeling of community and you can end up feeling more like one big family than like roommates.

Something for everyone

What the dormitory lacks in square meters is made up for in other facilities. The most important common area is the bar, Ottos Trøst (Otto’s Comfort). The bar is open every Friday and a draught beer is DKK 20 – it is a perfect place to bring your friends or to head down after a dinner in the kitchen.

The bar has a stage which has often been the scene of OMK’s very own band, Husorkesteret (the House Orchestra), which fills the dance floor with popular cover songs. Every spring, the bar hosts the Otto Festival, a festival that stretches over a weekend, where many different bands come to play and where residents from all the kitchens have the chance to tend the bar. The bar is also the scene for the big parties that are held every three months or so, and for showings of big sports events such as the Champion League’s final.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.

Other popular facilities are the reading room which is divided into a serious quiet zone and a homier, more relaxed living room which has recently been redecorated by three residents; a small gym in the basement; and the home cinema where you can go and watch a DVD on the big screen. We also have a living room with a piano, a sauna, guestrooms, rooms for group work, a laundry room and a bicycle workshop. And then there are of course the mandatory table football and table tennis.

Adults or children?

Being a resident of OMK myself, I sometimes wonder if we are all just a bunch of kids pretending that we have grown up just enough to live away from home. We like to play games, cut loose and be silly. Twice a year every kitchen has what we call “Gangcrawl” which is a tour down the corridor with a stop in each room, where the resident has prepared a theme, a drink and a game. The idea is that nothing is too silly for a “gangcrawl”, and this idea is truly explored.

And at the big parties, tradition is that the party starts with a battle in some silly game between East and West on each floor. The latest example form the Western-themed spring party was a joust in piggyback riding and beer lassoing.

The loose and silly atmosphere is not limited to party-time only. You will often find people playing cubb or croquet in the garden, being absorbed in an intense game of table football or shouting silly things at each other out the kitchen windows. All in all, I think we just like to have fun. And those who are into having fun and exercising at the same time can join the football teams or the badminton club.

The Outside World

When your neighbors guitar playing becomes too loud, or the confinement of the kitchen too claustrophobic, it might be time to take a step outside the bubble of the dormitory life. At OMK, we are lucky to have Vesterbro right around the corner. A stroll down Sønderboulevard, and you are guaranteed to return home in good spirits, and if you crave some nature, Søndermarken is a ten minute walk away.

At OMK we like to invite the outside world into our little bubble as well. To get in, you have to be on the waiting list for about a year and students from all universities and faculties and from the professional bachelor degree programs are welcome. Therefore, the residents of OMK are a diverse crowd, though mainly Danish students. Maybe the next new resident will be you…

[If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it ‘Dorms Disclosed’]

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Are the residents children or grown-up’s?

[This guide has been continually updated since it was first published in 2014. However the student rooms are much the same. Each person gets a bathroom and a kitchenette, and the room itself is spacious and white. Concrete is an integral part of the building’s design which means that the ceilings in the rooms are made of this material, and that most rooms have a wall which is partly made of concrete.

The design of the common areas is dominated by browns and oranges. This design decision is often frowned upon by the inhabitants who find it a bit odd that anybody would choose these 1970's colors to match the dorm's expensive and modern furniture. Thankfully, the common kitchens are a neutral white, and – as anybody who has ever lived in an old Copenhagen apartment will be able to appreciate – there are dishwashers!

Halloween, Christmas and social life

Like the architecture, the social life on each floor is different. The most accurate description would be that it is what you make of it. Bikuben Kollegiet has its private Facebook group where people often post if they are having a kitchen party or if they are showing a movie in the lounge. Usually everybody is invited, and it is always a pleasure when a new face shows up.

If you want a social dorm life it is a great idea to join one of Bikuben’s many committees. My recommendation would be the Party Committee as they get together regularly to organize Bikuben’s parties.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

Last semester Bikuben had two official parties: The Halloween Party and the Christmas Lunch. Both were preceded by pre-parties: The Pumpkin Party where we carved pumpkins for Halloween decorations, and the Christmas Decoration party where the Baking Committee served cakes and everybody folded Christmas hearts and Christmas stars.

Life on the 4th floor

My floor is one of the most social in the dorm. Most of the time you’ll find people hanging out in the kitchens and the common rooms, and we regularly organize events as well as consume a lot of boxed wine. This means that we have what we call "Red Wine Friday", which does not necessarily have to be on a Friday.

Sometimes we celebrate Red Wine Friday three times a week. On our floor, most days of the week are connected with a particular kind of alcohol: Cocktail Monday, Tequila Tuesday, Vodka Saturday and so on. We did however deem it necessary to develop Abstinence Wednesday too.

Each Monday we have the official dinner club where the residents of the fourth floor cook for each other. Often many impromptu dinners happen too as a lot of the residents like to cook and make use of the opportunity to get many people together in order to be able to afford an excellent dinner on a student budget.

A modern home

While the beauty of Bikuben Kollegiet can be discussed, there is no doubt that it is a great luxury to live in a modern building. While the old Copenhagen apartments are charming, you can’t help but appreciate the fact that an elevator takes you to your floor, that a dishwasher is right at hand or that the building is isolated so well that you hardly ever hear your neighbours.

And in the dark winter evenings when you see, not the orange and the gray colors, but the welcoming irregular squares of light shining from the box, Bikuben is an especially nice place to call home.

[This review has been written by a student reporter at the University Post. If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it 'Dorms Disclosed']

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Review: Bikuben Kollegiet (first review)
Some may call Bikuben Kollegiet ugly, but underneath the 70s-style colour palette you find ultra modern facilities and in the summer there are rooftop parties
In 1908, engineer and industrialist Gustav Adolph Hagemann made the decision to have a dormitory built in his name.

G.A. Hagemann's Kollegium (GAHK) was first of its kind in Denmark, as the first to have male and female students live together - quite controversial!

Written on top of the great main entrance are the words: ''Tjen andre, vil selv du tjenes'' (serve others as you wish them to serve you).

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

Shared meals and intimate atmosphere

The house today is home for 61 students from different higher education institutions. The average age of the residents is higher than most other dorms, as students must have finished two years of studies prior to acceptance. They also strive towards and equal gender distribution within the dorm.

The fact that only 61 residents live at the dormitory creates a community feeling, where everyone knows one another. All residents want to be part of the community and are willing to work for it.

Everyone participates in the shared meal arrangement and takes responsibility for the cleaning and the maintenance of the dorm.

Different responsibilities

Moreover, each resident is member of a group with additional responsibilities for the everyday life.

There’s ''Køkkengruppen'' (The Kitchen Group) who are responsible for the communication between the residents and the kitchen employees, and “Festgruppen” (The Party Group) who are responsible for some of the traditional parties held at GAHK.

Other groups arrange ''out-of-house events'', like trips to the theater arranged by ''Kulturgruppen'' (The Culture Group) or a climbing competition organized by ''Sportsgruppen'' (The Sports Group).

Almost like a hotel

Today, the dormitory works as a self-governing institution, where the residents manage the day-to-day operations. This includes everything from budget, to cleaning, to deciding which new students should be part of the community.

As a very special feature of the dormitory, two employees work in the kitchen on weekdays to prepare lunch and dinner to all residents. The meals are the main gathering point at GAHK. Here, it doesn’t matter what floor you live on - everybody mixes around across floors, acknowledging and caring for one another.

The meals take place in the great dining hall in the basement. On weekends, the residents cook themselves with groceries bought by the kitchen staff.

Heartbreaks and politics

The meal arrangement gives surplus energy to the residents, since grocery shopping and cooking are already dealt with when returning after a long day at the university.

During dinner, there’s a great atmosphere among the residents, and everything from political agendas, heartbreaks, sports events, and reality-TV are debated.

These social hours are especially appreciated during exam periods, where it can sometimes be difficult to find the time and energy for anything other than studying.

Many years - many traditions

As student housing with many years of history, a lot of traditions have been established. Among the most important is G. A. Hagemann’s birthday, which is celebrated with a picnic every year.

The residents rent a bus and drive to the burial site to remember and honour the man who founded such a unique and special place for the students of Copenhagen throughout the years.

The wife of Hagemann is also praised annually. This is celebrated in November with an annual galla. The residents show up in their shiniest dresses and suits for a three-course meal, speeches and ''les lanciers'' dancing, a traditional style of classical dance.

Vodka and the Russian anthem

G.A. Hagemann's arch-rivals, Nordisk Kollegium, are situated just a few hundred metres down the road. Through the years, Nordisk Kollegium and GAHK have been competing in having the best rooms in Copenhagen.

This rivalry is tested each year at Kastellet by an intense and nerve-racking tug-of-war competition. The evening is always completed with the two dormitories partying with each other – sometimes with a few pranks involved.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

At the end of the year, the greatest party is held: New Years Eve. As tradition prescribes, the residents and guests visits their neighbours, the Russian Embassy. Here, everybody (attempts) to sing the Russian National Anthem, and the Russians reciprocate with vodka and snacks.

In general, the dormitory has a lot of parties throughout the year. Common between all of them is that the residents always party and dance until dawn.

Study hall with a view

As a resident at GAHK you are assigned a room with your own washbasin and built in closets. Some rooms are larger than others, and include a bed loft or a balcony.

All rooms have their own charm, and since there are options to change room residents move out, it is often that a resident manages to live in several different rooms during their stay at GAHK.

The residents are allocated between 5 floors. At each floor there is a shared bathroom and toilet. There is also a small kitchenette where board games, coffee, and wine are enjoyed. At the top of the building – right under the roof – there’s a study hall, with an amazing view over Copenhagen.

GAHK also houses a great banquet hall above the dining hall. On many evenings the residents gather for a movie, or the latest episode of Paradise Hotel, in the home theater.

Are you interested in living at G. A. Hagemanns Kollegium?

In order to apply you must have completed an equivalence of two years of studies at a long, higher education, and must be Danish-speaking.

The first thing to do in the application process is to visit the GAHK website, where the application process is outlined.

Here you will get the chance to see the place and maybe meet some the residents. In case you are still interested after the guided tour, you will be given the application scheme and you’ll be explained the further application process. We admit new residents continuously. Maybe you are the next one?

Until then you can get a guided tour of the dorm via the University Post photo reporter Ane Terp Rasmussen. At Østerbro Kollegiet, residents contest that. Converted from a parking garage to a dormitory in 2005, the structure now provides 150 international students with single or shared rooms. The building itself may be an eyesore in the beautiful and posh neighborhood of Østerbro, however the inside tells a different story.

Private and communal spaces

The dormitory provides a perfect mix of privacy and proximity to others. Dorm rooms are equipped with a kitchenette and a bathroom and though the space may seem small (17-26 square meters) the large windows in each room make them appear much larger. The dormitory also has bike parking and laundry facilities, the later not free to use.

While residents have the option to seek privacy in their own rooms, communal spaces draw students out to cook together and enjoy a beer or two…or three. On each of the five floors there is a kitchen with large wooden tables and plenty of chairs.

Floors often plan dinners together, eat together, drink together and CLEAN together. A weekly schedule is devised to ensure that the cleaning part happens. As recommended by the dormitory assistants on the first day, cleaning in a group can be fun!

International vibe

If you are looking for a place to practice your Danish, Østerbro Kollegiet is not for you. Students are much more likely to learn Spanish, Italian, or Japanese. Apart from two Danish speaking dormitory assistants, all residents are international students.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

This is a review by a student reporter. But in the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

Arriving from all over the world, students are eager to meet one another and form bonds with future travel buddies. Doors are often kept open to encourage people to drop in and introduce themselves. Everyone is in the same boat.

Moving to a new country is scary but an international residence helps to make the transition fun and effortless. The diversity of the residence fits the bill for a true exchange student experience, however if you came to meet Danish students you’ll have to do so outside the walls of the kollegiet.

Shhh, you’re in Østerbro!

The location of the dormitory provides as many pros as it does cons. Østerbro is quiet and calm. The streets are inhabited with strollers and expensive suits, not a student ghetto by any means.

The location may be off-putting for those in search of a party four nights a week or for those who struggle with the concept of noise restrictions, however by metro or bike, students can be in the centre of town in less than half an hour. Suddenly the distance doesn’t seem too great and the pros to quiet Østerbro become evident. Returning home after a night out is both safe and peaceful. Unlike the streets of Nørrebro or the Meatpacking district, you are guaranteed a good night’s sleep.

Read also: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Another pro to the family-oriented neighborhood is that there are over five grocery stores within walking distance, a gym, large parks and even a beach. The neighborhood was build for families to enjoy. At Østerbro Kollegiet, students take advantage of it.

Hygge?

The question must be asked; can hygge be found in an old parking garage? Yes!

It may be difficult to find inside the stark white dorm rooms, however it is in abundance if students are willing to do a bit of climbing. The roof terrace is truly the pièce de résistance. It is complete with picnic tables, flowers and a million dollar view of the sunrise for those who wake up early or get in late.

Dinners, drinks and cozy blankets are often brought up to the roof and although strict rules keep noise at a minimum, it is a small price to pay. The roof is a meeting place for new friends and the panoramic view provides a constant reminder of the beauty of Copenhagen, their new home.

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Review: Østerbro Kollegiet
The perfect mix of privacy and proximity to others.
