A<\/span>s the Rector number 259 of the University of Copenhagen,
\nI now have the pleasure and honor to welcome you \u2013 some of the most
\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0tormented
\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0resilient
\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and courageous students
\nsince the university saw the face of the Earth in 1479.<\/p>\n

Just consider the sacrifices you\u2019ve made.
\nAll the things you\u2019ve missed.
\nWhat you\u2019ve had to endure.<\/p>\n

No hugging.
\nNo clubbing.
\nThe feeling of being trapped in Zoomland:\u00a0Online – and\u00a0off\u00a0life.
\nToo much privacy \u2013 being home alone.<\/p>\n

Not enough\u00a0privacy\u00a0with the webcam in your personal space.
\nLess\u00a0casual\u00a0sex \u2013 although S\u00f8ren Brostr\u00f8m said it was OK.
\nMore\u00a0casual\u00a0clothes \u2013 pajamas as the work outfit.
\nAnd testing, testing, testing \u2013 including the big test of your patience.<\/p>\n

Listen up – today I bring you good news:
\nYOU ARE HERE
\nand the University of OPENhagen is open for business
\n\u2013 and indeed for pleasure.<\/p>\n

\nOg det er netop i respekt for dem, at denne tale er p\u00e5 engelsk.<\/em>
\nSelvom KU jo ogs\u00e5 er dybt forankret i Danmarks kultur, sprog og historie.<\/em><\/p>\n

[Open \u2014 UCPH is also for all international students.
\nAnd it is in respect for them that this speech is in English.
\nEven though the University of Copenhagen is deeply rooted in the culture, language and history of Denmark.]<\/p>\n

Allow me to hijack that little, big word \u2013 \u00bbopen.\u00ab
\nBecause \u00bbbeing open\u00ab is key to what the university is all about.
\nYour education will open the door to a world of opportunities.<\/p>\n

And I don\u2019t just mean all the practical stuff
\nthat will make your parents proud\u00a0 – and please the politicians.<\/p>\n

Like a nice job title
\nmoney in the bank
\nand status at dinner conversations.<\/p>\n

All the boxes they expect you to tick off before you turn 30.<\/p>\n

The university is so much more.
\nIt\u2019s like reading a book or learning a language.
\nIt will expand your universe.
\nIt will\u00a0open\u00a0your mind.
\nAnd – beware \u2013 it will\u00a0change\u00a0your mind.<\/p>\n

Our planet desperately needs the mind-blowing knowledge that only the university can deliver.<\/p>\n

Just like when the international scientific community came together
\nand came up with a comprehensive cure for Covid.
\nFrom vaccines
\nto guiding our behavior
\nand helping those in financial trouble.<\/p>\n

Our planet desperately needs the mind-blowing knowledge that the university will empower\u00a0you\u00a0to deliver.
\n– such as a cure for the climate crisis.<\/p>\n

I have faith in you.
\nNot only as future researchers who can crack the code of green technology.
\nBut also as the open-minded generation of academics that can change the mindset of humanity itself.<\/p>\n

But you \u2013 the young people and students who \u2013 unleashed a green mass movement that conquered our green hearts and minds.After all, who carried the alarming data of a looming climate disaster
\nfrom the scientific journals to the streets
\nand all the way to the kitchen table and \u00bbvegan-filled\u00ab refrigerators?<\/p>\n

Not your parents.
\nNot the politicians.
\nNot even the researchers, although they tried.<\/p>\n

In a moment, I will introduce the university heads
\nwearing their gowns made from centuries of learning.
\nYou\u2019ve already met some of them on video.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, the students only cheer for their \u00bbown\u00ab dean.
\nBut please remember: this is not a sports competition.
\nThe champions are not the youngest, the oldest or the biggest
\n\u2013 but the brightest.<\/p>\n

And do you know what scientists have in common with people in a pandemic?
\nWell, we don\u2019t work well in isolation.
\nWe have to work together across faculties
\nto fix the problems that we know we know
\nas well as the problems that we know we don\u2019t know\u2026 yet.<\/p>\n

Six months ago, a graduate from Harvard University entered a stage in Washington D.C. – slightly larger than this one.<\/p>\n

At President Biden\u2019s inauguration ceremony, she read a poem that gave us hope in the wake of conflict and Covid.<\/p>\n

Amanda Gorman said:
\n\u00bbWe lay down our arms
\nso we can reach out our arms
\nto one another.\u00ab<\/p>\n

Today, I urge you to reach out to one another.
\nBecause we need community and campus life to combat what Covid has left us with: A pandemic of loneliness and anxiety.
\nPlease be kind to each other, including man-kind, plant-kind and indeed all kinds of life.<\/p>\n

Standing in front of the Capitol, Amanda Gorman seemed almost more presidential than the President himself.
\nI\u2019m sure you will \u2013 and that you will leave this planet in a better condition than you inherited it.
\nAnd do come and rock and dance with your fellow students at the University festival on 17 September.<\/p>\n

She said:
\n\u00bbWe have learned that quiet isn\u2019t always peace.\u00ab
\nAnd yes – it was quiet staying at home with the computer as the only one to keep you company.<\/p>\n

But it gives me\u00a0peace of mind\u00a0to know that, in a moment, you
\n\u2013 the open-minded students of 2021 \u2013
\nwill open the door to the university and to life itself.

\/>\nI now have the pleasure and honor to welcome you \u2013 some of the most<br \/>\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0tormented<br \/>\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0resilient<br \/>\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and courageous students<br \/>\nsince the university saw the face of the Earth in 1479.<\/p>\n<p>Just consider the sacrifices you\u2019ve made.<br \/>\nAll the things you\u2019ve missed.<br \/>\nWhat you\u2019ve had to endure.<\/p>\n<p>No hugging.<br \/>\nNo clubbing.<br \/>\nThe feeling of being trapped in Zoomland:\u00a0Online – and\u00a0off\u00a0life.<br \/>\nToo much privacy \u2013 being home alone.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough\u00a0privacy\u00a0with the webcam in your personal space.<br \/>\nLess\u00a0casual\u00a0sex \u2013 although S\u00f8ren Brostr\u00f8m said it was OK.<br \/>\nMore\u00a0casual\u00a0clothes \u2013 pajamas as the work outfit.<br \/>\nAnd testing, testing, testing \u2013 including the big test of your patience.<\/p>\n<p>Listen up – today I bring you good news:<br \/>\nYOU ARE HERE<br \/>\nand the University of OPENhagen is open for business<br \/>\n\u2013 and indeed for pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>[Spoken in Danish]<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c5ben \u2013 det er KU ogs\u00e5 for alle de internationale studerende.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Og det er netop i respekt for dem, at denne tale er p\u00e5 engelsk.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Selvom KU jo ogs\u00e5 er dybt forankret i Danmarks kultur, sprog og historie.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[Open \u2014 UCPH is also for all international students.<br \/>\nAnd it is in respect for them that this speech is in English.<br \/>\nEven though the University of Copenhagen is deeply rooted in the culture, language and history of Denmark.]<\/p>\n<p>Allow me to hijack that little, big word \u2013 \u00bbopen.\u00ab<br \/>\nBecause \u00bbbeing open\u00ab is key to what the university is all about.<br \/>\nYour education will open the door to a world of opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>And I don\u2019t just mean all the practical stuff<br \/>\nthat will make your parents proud\u00a0 – and please the politicians.<\/p>\n<p>Like a nice job title<br \/>\nmoney in the bank<br \/>\nand status at dinner conversations.<\/p>\n<p>All the boxes they expect you to tick off before you turn 30.<\/p>\n<p>The university is so much more.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s like reading a book or learning a language.<br \/>\nIt will expand your universe.<br \/>\nIt will\u00a0open\u00a0your mind.<br \/>\nAnd – beware \u2013 it will\u00a0change\u00a0your mind.<\/p>\n<p>Our planet desperately needs the mind-blowing knowledge that only the university can deliver.<\/p>\n<p>Just like when the international scientific community came together<br \/>\nand came up with a comprehensive cure for Covid.<br \/>\nFrom vaccines<br \/>\nto guiding our behavior<br \/>\nand helping those in financial trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Our planet desperately needs the mind-blowing knowledge that the university will empower\u00a0you\u00a0to deliver.<br \/>\n– such as a cure for the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p>I have faith in you.<br \/>\nNot only as future researchers who can crack the code of green technology.<br \/>\nBut also as the open-minded generation of academics that can change the mindset of humanity itself.<\/p>\n<p>But you \u2013 the young people and students who \u2013 unleashed a green mass movement that conquered our green hearts and minds.After all, who carried the alarming data of a looming climate disaster<br \/>\nfrom the scientific journals to the streets<br \/>\nand all the way to the kitchen table and \u00bbvegan-filled\u00ab refrigerators?<\/p>\n<p>Not your parents.<br \/>\nNot the politicians.<br \/>\nNot even the researchers, although they tried.<\/p>\n<p>In a moment, I will introduce the university heads<br \/>\nwearing their gowns made from centuries of learning.<br \/>\nYou\u2019ve already met some of them on video.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, the students only cheer for their \u00bbown\u00ab dean.<br \/>\nBut please remember: this is not a sports competition.<br \/>\nThe champions are not the youngest, the oldest or the biggest<br \/>\n\u2013 but the brightest.<\/p>\n<p>And do you know what scientists have in common with people in a pandemic?<br \/>\nWell, we don\u2019t work well in isolation.<br \/>\nWe have to work together across faculties<br \/>\nto fix the problems that we know we know<br \/>\nas well as the problems that we know we don\u2019t Harvard University entered a stage in Washington D.C. – slightly larger than this one.<\/p>\n<p>At President Biden\u2019s inauguration ceremony, she read a poem that gave us hope in the wake of conflict and Covid.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Gorman said:<br \/>\n\u00bbWe lay down our arms<br \/>\nso we can reach out our arms<br \/>\nto one another.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>Today, I urge you to reach out to one another.<br \/>\nBecause we need community and campus life to combat what Covid has left us with: A pandemic of loneliness and anxiety.<br \/>\nPlease be kind to each other, including man-kind, plant-kind and indeed all kinds of life.<\/p>\n<p>Standing in front of the Capitol, Amanda Gorman seemed almost more presidential than the President himself.<br \/>\nI\u2019m sure you will \u2013 and that you will leave this planet in a better condition than you inherited it.<br \/>\nAnd do come and rock and dance with your fellow students at the University festival on 17 September.<\/p>\n<p>She said:<br \/>\n\u00bbWe have learned that quiet isn\u2019t always peace.\u00ab<br \/>\nAnd yes – it was quiet staying at home with the computer as the only one to keep you company.<\/p>\n<p>But it gives me\u00a0peace of mind\u00a0to know that, in a moment, you<br \/>\n\u2013 the open-minded students of 2021 \u2013<br \/>\nwill open the door to the university and to life itself.<br \/>\nWelcome
