Ryesgade 58 in the \u00d8sterbro district in Copenhagen has a history as a home to squatters from the Danish BZ \u2018occupy\u2019 movement from 1983-1986. The conflict between the BZ\u2019ers and the police reached its high point in the \u2018Battle of Ryesgade\u2019, where the residents after a nine day siege ended up abandoning and leaving the building. The Danish singer Kim Larsen once tried \u2014 unsuccessfully \u2014 to buy and give it to the residents.<\/p>\n

Ryesgade Kollegiet<\/p>\n

Monthly rent:<\/strong> DKK 2,800 – DKK 4,100<\/p>\n

Application process:<\/strong> Waiting list. You need to study a certified Danish degree programme.<\/p>\n

Today, the Ryesgade dorm is a quieter place that houses around 40 young students on five floors with seven people and one shared kitchen on each.<\/p>\n

There are also two one-room flats and five two-room flats that you can sign up for. The rent varies between the different types of rooms, but is somewhere between DKK 2,800 and 4,100.<\/p>\n

Community atmosphere<\/h3>\n

\u00bbIt’s a very little residence hall,\u00ab says resident Rikke M\u00f8ller.<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt’s really, really cosy. It has a bit of a community atmosphere.\u00ab<\/p>\n

It is difficult to hide from the others in Ryesgade, according to Rikke M\u00f8ller.<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt is not a requirement that you participate actively in the community. But it’s just a lot, lot cooler if you do it. But you don’t have to live up to some kind of social code.\u00ab<\/p>\n

The small size of dormitory means that it is easy to exert an influence over your kitchen, and there is no bureaucracy stopping you. This can also be seen at the residents’ meetings, which are not particularly formal:<\/p>\n

\u00bbThere is always one item on the agenda, and that is gossip,\u00ab says Rikke M\u00f8ller laughing.
\n<\/p>\n

The residents themselves are responsible for their communal areas, which they prefer to organise with recyclable furniture and knick-knacks in what Rikke M\u00f8ller calls \u00bbthe do-it-yourself style.\u00ab<\/p>\n

Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt’s a good mixture of random things. That’s just how I think we find it the nicest,\u00ab says Rikke, but adds that a beer-fridge should be a fixture.<\/p>\n

This could be used for a bi-annual \u2018floor crawl\u2019 , where the different floors in the building compete for the ‘the eternal cow’. Each floor needs a theme here, and the classic theme is the BZ squatter theme, says Rikke M\u00f8ller: \u00bbThen we listen to a bit of Kim Larsen and throw some cobblestones.\u00ab<\/p>\n

According to Rikke, however, it is the \u00bbinformal community\u00ab that makes up the Ryesgade residence hall. \u00bbIt is not so much that there is a party going on, but more that you can sit on the couch together, and knit, and have a chat.\u00ab<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt’s an easy community to be a part of.\u00ab<\/p>\n

The rent varies between the different types of rooms, but is somewhere between DKK 2,800 and 4,100.<\/p>\n<h3>Community atmosphere<\/h3>\n<p>\u00bbIt’s a very little residence hall,\u00ab says resident Rikke M\u00f8ller.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt’s really, really cosy. It has a bit of a community atmosphere.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>It is difficult to hide from the others in Ryesgade, according to Rikke M\u00f8ller.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt is not a requirement that you participate actively in the community. But it’s just a lot, lot cooler if you do it. But you don’t have to live up to some kind of social code.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>The small size of dormitory means that it is easy to exert an influence over your kitchen, and there is no bureaucracy stopping you. feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n<p>There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n<p>Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n<p>This is a review by a student reporter. That’s just how I think we find it the nicest,\u00ab says Rikke, but adds that a beer-fridge should be a fixture.<\/p>\n<p>This could be used for a bi-annual \u2018floor crawl\u2019 , where the different floors in the building compete for the ‘the eternal cow’. The rooms are between 14.6-56 m2 and have private bathrooms. The kitchen is shared. The dorm has a very modern interior and has purposely kept an antique exterior, which creates a fascinating contrast. The vibe is very international as 40 % of the students are from abroad. It is also a very social environment and is known for its common Sunday dinners and themed Friday bar nights. Rooms vary greatly in size, from 11-25 m2, but the price remains a staggeringly low. Other than a room, you gain access to a great number of common spaces and activities: from a large ballroom to a library and study hall. Not anyone can apply for this residence hall, which only has 20 places with several of them are earmarked for specific study programmes. In 2020, 184 new rooms were ready on the outskirts of the Vesterbro district. CPH Village has moved on from the concept of recycling ships\u2019 containers and now builds the homes in wood, but the rooms\u2019 dimensions remain the same: 11 square metres, including one small kitchen, per room. The residents are friendly and helpful. The rooms are private and between 10-16m2. They contain a small bathroom and kitchenette, but there is also a common kitchen. The dorm houses about 300 residents. The building itself has been under contraction and this brings its own set of challenges, including noise, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/students-forced-to-live-on-building-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">critical media attention from us at the University Post<\/a><\/strong> and other media. This is one of the most unique dormitories in Denmark, in the middle of a forest and close to a lake. The houses are built of logs and the residents each have 10m2 with shared kitchens and bathrooms. Each hallway has a common kitchen which is also used as a place to hang out and watch TV. Most communal kitchens have a cleaning schedule, where the residents are expected to participate and to pay a small amount of money each month for cleaning supplies.\r\n\r\nSome communal kitchens also organize food clubs and parties for the specific hall or block. So if you\u2019re new to Copenhagen, and would like to meet new people and make friends, communal kitchens are good for that.\r\n<h2>Wave to your neighbor<\/h2>\r\nIf you like the privacy of your own kitchen, there are four blocks of apartments with rooms of the same size as the ones with the communal kitchen, but with their own, small kitchen instead.\r\n\r\nEven if you don\u2019t get to experience the same dorm vibe as the people with communal kitchens do, you still have plenty of opportunities to meet other people living in \u00d8K and be part of the social life.\r\n\r\nThe rooms are spacious and well lit with one wall consisting of floor to ceiling windows, and mostly overlooking, though not directly, the other buildings (making it hard to see everything your neighbor\u00b4s doing, though you can still wave at them).\r\n<h2>Family-friendly<\/h2>\r\nThe rest of the dorm comprises two- and three-bedroom apartments.\r\n\r\nThese are often inhabited by couples or families. \u00d8K is a pretty decent place for young families to live, as it\u2019s closed off from traffic, which helps create a sort of small-town feeling for the people who live here.\r\n\r\nAnother perk is that the biggest and most expensive type of apartment, with three rooms, is still cheap for Copenhagen standards, at DKK 4,800, which makes it perfect for people with children, who are on a student budget.\r\n<h2>Lots of ways to be social<\/h2>\r\nAt \u00d8K there are plenty of opportunities to join in on the social life. The bar, \u2018Sumpen\u2019 is open on Thursdays and Saturdays, where you can go and meet your cohabitants, play a board game, shoot dart, play foosball, and drink a (cheap) beer, drink or soda.\r\n\r\nThen there\u2019s the dorms\u2019 very own, and highly equipped gym, which is open every day. And it\u2019s a lot cheaper than any other gym you\u2019ll find in town.\r\n\r\nThere\u2019s a basement with 4 music rehearsing spaces, fitted with drum kits and amplifiers, a keyboard and a piano. There\u2019s a gym hall where you can practice karate, dance moves, or start any sort of class for the rest of the dorm if you\u2019d like.\r\n<h2>\"Pretty much all interests are covered\"<\/h2>\r\nThere\u2019s an arts and crafts room where you can paint or make pottery, there\u2019s a room for sewing, a darkroom where you can develop your photos, and a children\u2019s room where the kids can play.\r\n\r\nThere are also a number of groups you can join, such as the music group, which organizes events like the annual \u00d8K-festival. The party-group organizes the bigger parties and the bar-group is the power behind the bar on Thursdays and Saturdays, sometimes themed for things like Halloween, 80\u2019s party or Eurovision.\r\n\r\nYou also have \u00d8ksen, \u00d8K\u2019s very own publication, with articles relating to the dorm and its neighborhood. There\u2019s the film group that shows films on a real cinema screen every Sunday evening, and hosts film-related events, like Oscars night, the sports group which organizes various sport events and training, the arts and crafts group, the children\u2019s group, the sowing group, the computer group, an environmental group, the residents group, just to name a few. Pretty much all interests are covered.\r\n<h2>Amenities that just make life a little sweeter<\/h2>\r\nBy 2015, plans to set up an eatery inside the premises should have reached its completion, so that the inhabitants can buy their lunch\/dinner at the dorm, at student friendly prices.\r\n\r\nThere\u2019s a big Laundromat, and laundry credits are included in the rent, there\u2019s a big computer\/printing room, a study room where you can read in peace, a group room you can book for your study group, a workshop for various projects, and storage rooms (which are quite scarce, and in demand).\r\n\r\nThere are 2 party-rooms, fitted with a stereo, kitchen and tables and chairs, and 4 guestrooms each with room for 4 people that you can book, there\u2019s a huge terrace with plenty of benches, barbeques and sun loungers, where inhabitants often hang out in the summer, there\u2019s a gated area for playing football or basketball, there\u00b4s a playing ground for the kids, there are two outdoors ping pong tables, and a free, gated parking lot, just for the residents.\r\n\r\nNobody\u2019s going to drag you into the social life at \u00d8K, and some initiative is required, but all in all, living in \u00d8K is amazing; the location is good, you get a lot for your rents worth, and there are plenty of opportunities to make friends, get new experiences, and make use of the variety of amenities and facilities. You may be spending half your time on a stranger\u2019s couch and the other half either partying or sleeping on a bench. Instead of living such a life, we suggest that you settle in our haven of comfort and fun in this huge city of otherwise unfriendly Danes.\r\n\r\nOur haven is located just between Amagerbro metro station and KUA in a big redbrick building that we, a bunch of 219 diverse students, call home. And no, it is not Tietgen or Bikuben. It is Rasmus Nielsens Kollegium (RNK), which for some reason is unknown to many. We find this weird, since it undoubtedly is one of the best dorms in Copenhagen, and we think that anyone who is interested should get a chance to live here.\r\n\r\n<strong>SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen<\/a>\r\n<h2>Cheap and central<\/h2>\r\nLiving in Copenhagen is not cheapest, but if you get into a dorm like Rasmus Nielsens Kollegium, it is actually quite affordable. The dorm dates back to 1961, which makes the rent a lot cheaper than that of other dorms. With a room at RNK, you have everything you need; each room has both a kitchen and a bathroom, and there are washing machines and dryers in the basement, which are free to use! In addition, RNK is located only 10 minutes away from the inner city and only 200 meters away from Amagerbro metro station.\r\n\r\nThe dorm has five floors, each with a common kitchen. The five common kitchens have different priorities and identities, which means your experience here will very much depend on which floor you end up on. The third floor, for instance, is a very sociable and warm floor. Every night is food club night, on Saturdays we drink wine and play games, and we welcome anyone into the kitchen with open arms. Especially if you like crocheting and knitting. The fifth floor, or the penthouse as they like to call themselves, is the matchmaking and party floor. Everyone is a couple, and if you are not part of one, you are likely to find your match there. Despite the differences of the kitchens, we all value the social aspect of everyday life and focus on turning the common kitchens into common homes.\r\n\r\nThe best part of living at RNK is the people. They become your new family; people to come home to, with whom you share your stories of the day, cook meals with and watch bad television - you know, spending \u2018family-time\u2019. We help each other and we enjoy each other\u2019s company.\r\n<h2>Joining a Community<\/h2>\r\nIf you feel like meeting other people and contributing to the social life at RNK, there are several committees that you can join. The obvious first choice is the Party Committee, in which you can make all your party fantasies come true. The Party Committee is in charge of organizing a number of parties every year; most of them with a theme. On top of that, they organize the famous Manhattan Festival every summer. If you are not into heavy drinking and partying all night, then S Club 5 is another committee organizing social events for all RNK residents. In summer, they organize barbecues, bonfires and a midsummers party. In winter, movie clubs, bingo nights, game nights and Thursday caf\u00e9s take the scene.\r\n\r\nThe RNK parties in the basement are a loved tradition by residents, as opposed to pretty much any other party, you have unlimited access to a queue-free and private bathroom just an elevator ride away. No matter how much you drink; your bed will remain within crawling distance at all times. Alternatively, someone else will carry you there. Apart from the convenience of partying \u2018at home\u2019, the bar is also cheap, the dance floor quickly gets crowded, you get to pick your own music and the parties have the warm atmosphere of a family reunion.\r\n\r\nNow, there is naturally another thing to consider. With so many friends living right next door it can be difficult to get anything done besides having fun. Studying is not going to take care of itself. In our kitchen we have tried to fix this problem by studying collectively in the kitchen; admittedly not something that happens very often, but it has been known to happen. Otherwise, the dorm also has a common study room in the basement that everyone is free to use or you can isolate yourself in your room.\r\n\r\nAt RNK, we are gifted with lots of great facilities. Apart from the ones already mentioned, we have two rooms in the basement, where you can park your bike. We also have a gym, where you can practice everything from rowing to heavy weight lifting. Despite being more than 10 years old now, its appearance is still impressive: a brown, circular six-story building organized into five blocks ordered with even numbers from 10 to 18, which are painted big and white outside each entrance.\r\n\r\n<strong>SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen<\/a>\r\n\r\nAll the dorm's kitchens and the common rooms face inwards, while the private rooms face outwards. The ground floor is dedicated to dorm facilities, namely the dorm's administration, a study room, a computer and printing room, a small but well-equipped gym, colorful laundry rooms, two music rooms, and a bike shop, plus some other rooms used for group work and workshops. Even if you stayed there 24\/7, you wouldn\u2019t be able to use them all.\r\n<h2>Inside Tietgen's doors<\/h2>\r\nEach block and each floor defines a group of residents sharing a kitchen (for example, 18.2 stands for block eighteen, second floor), and students strongly identify themselves with it.\r\n\r\nEvery kitchen and the common room located next to it is shared between students living in the same corridor. There are twelve rooms per corridor, all of them with a private bathroom and a big window. However, the room\u2019s configuration differs in size and whether there\u2019s a balcony or not. One room per corridor is destined for couples and is notably bigger in size, but it can also be rented by one student only. There are 30 kitchens and 360 rooms at Tietgen in total.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the kitchen and the common room, every corridor also has a refrigerator room where students can dry their clothes, keep extra kitchen utensils, and store food in freezers.\r\n<h2>Location<\/h2>\r\nThe dorm is located on Amager, just next to Islands Brygge metro station and University of Copenhagen's KUA campus, and is mainly surrounded by university and residential buildings. Tietgen's location is the ideal balance between the city centre and its periphery. It takes 5-7 minutes to bike to the city center, and about as long to go the opposite way to the modern living area called \u00d8restad, where you'll find the Signalhuset dorm.\r\n\r\nFor students studying at North Campus or Danish Technical University (DTU), Tietgen's location is not favorable. It is also not the best place for those, who don't want to socialize in the common areas or get involved into party organization, decoration and cleaning.\r\n<h2>Social environment and sports<\/h2>\r\nLiving at Tietgen will get you closer to the Danish culture. Since there's only two out of twelve rooms in each corridor reserved for exchange students, you'll mainly be living with Danes, learn their habits and try to speak their language (this doesn\u2019t mean you won't have other nationalities in the ten remaining rooms, but it is highly unlikely).\r\n\r\nThis dorm is one of the few where your contact with Danes will be real! You\u2019ll find that there are organized committees for everything. Students gather to do what they like the most: play football, do yoga, cook, plan parties or events, and even welcome foreign students (you'll sure be well-received by the exchange students committee).\r\n\r\n\u00ad\u00ad\u00ad\u00ad\u00adFor sure the best parties will take place at this dorm: Tour de Tietgen, Tour de Chambre, Tour de Cuisine, Pre-semester start party, Semester start party, Julefrokost... the list of good parties is endless. Despite the crazy drinking on weekend nights, you'll see most residents at the gym quite frequently or going for a run in Amager F\u00e6lled, as healthy and active lifestyle is very popular at Tietgen.\r\n<h2>Pros and cons<\/h2>\r\nThe design of Tietgen works well. It is quite easy to see where's the fun and join it, as the interior of the circle contains big windows showing the activity of each kitchen. Also, the residents tend to be very friendly to new students, and it is easy to blend in (not so easy if you don't speak Danish at all).\r\n\r\nThe Facebook groups and the internal administration page is very active and on top of everything, which makes the communication of events, trades, parties and any kind of problems very simple and easy to participate in. However, the rooms here are expensive, especially for exchange students.\r\n\r\nTo appreciate Tiegten to the fullest, you should be outgoing and eager to make Danish friends, learn their culture and respect their habits. After all, you are just another exchange student who's moving into their kitchen from a period of six months to a year, while some of them have already been living there for more than three or four years.
