Denmark\u2019s oldest university has slumped on the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking<\/a>. The University of Copenhagen (UCPH) now ranks 96th, down 12 places since last year. Its Danish brother \u00ad\u2014 Aarhus University \u2014 ranks 104th.<\/p>\n

In a year dominated by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the rankings reflect the vital role of universities in understanding and managing the crisis as a number of institutions see significant boosts in their citation scores<\/p>\n

Times Higher Education World University Ranking<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u00bbIn a year dominated by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the rankings reflect the vital role of universities in understanding and managing the crisis as a number of institutions see significant boosts in their citation scores (which examine university\u2019s research influence, and look at their role in spreading new knowledge and ideas) from Covid-19 focused research,\u00ab the Times Higher Education World University Rankings writes in their release.<\/p>\n

Several medical universities made substantial upward moves on the table since last year following Covid-19 research, including institutions in Mainland China, \u00a0Taiwan and Saudi Arabia, and for example Estonia\u2019s Tallinn University of Technology.
\n
\nThe top five spots on the 2021 ranking are taken by the University of Oxford (UK), followed by California Institute of Technology (US), Harvard (US),
\nStanford (US), and Cambridge (UK).<\/p>\n

ETH Z\u00fcrich (Switzerland) is the highest-ranked university outside the UK and US with 15th place.<\/p>\n

Danish universities in the TIMES ranking<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 University of Copenhagen (=96th) is Denmark\u2019s best ranked university<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Aarhus University (104th) moves up two places from 106th last year<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Technical University of Denmark is 185th<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rollercoaster<\/h2>\n

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking is one of four rankings that the University of Copenhagen uses as a benchmark. The THE looks at a number of different criteria that include teaching, research, number of citations, international outlook, and cooperation with companies.<\/p>\n

The THE, in particular, has been a rollercoaster ride, with the University of Copenhagen gyrating back and forth from 51st to 177th and back since 2010.<\/p>\n
