The nine-storey Frankrigsgade dorm is the home of 126 students in a slightly anonymous-looking concrete building on the island suburb of Amager. For a monthly rent of DKK 3,500, you get a room with your own toilet and bathroom, and access to a shared kitchen that you share with 13 other residents.<\/p>\n

Application process: You need to study a certified Danish degree programme. And then you write yourself up on a waiting list.<\/p>\n

There is no particular \u2018type\u2019 of person living in Frankrigsgade Kollegiet, according to one of the residents Lukas Zeppelin.<\/p>\n

\u00bbThere are all sorts living here. They are so different \u2013 and this leads to a good dynamic.\u00ab<\/p>\n

No expectations<\/h3>\n

This applies, for example, to people’s social commitment. There are, according to Lukas Zeppelin, \u00bbno expectations at all\u00ab placed on you as a resident. But it’s possible to be social if you want to.<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt’s a great place if you’re not too much into the partying, but want something to happen once in a while,\u00ab says Lukas Zeppelin. \u00bbThat you do not want to be social all the time, but neither are you all alone. This is a great compromise for many people.\u00ab<\/p>\n

You can quickly get involved in the various committees, however. Like the garden committee or the residents’ council, according to Lukas Zeppelin. The beer financing on site are taken care of by a beer fund, which Lukas Zeppelin, as chairman, considers to be one of the most important decision-making bodies in the dorm.<\/p>\n

\u00bbThat’s where you buy the brews!\u00ab<\/p>\n

There is also a party committee that is responsible for organising parties like the free bar party in the autumn, and the big \u2018tour de chambre’, which involves all the floors. Apart from the party room and the garden courtyard, there are no other common areas in the entire residence hall. This means that it can be a challenge to get to know each other across the floors, according to Lukas Zeppelin.
\n<\/p>\n

Party and spring clean<\/h3>\n

The sense of community is easier to find on the different floors, where each of them has with their own traditions. The ninth floor, for example, has a lot of traditions associated with the annual spring cleaning.<\/p>\n

Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n

\u00bbI always look forward to it,\u00ab says Lukas Zeppelin. \u00bbIt’s really boring to clean, so we dress up and get drunk \u2013 but then we have to do all the chores!\u00ab<\/p>\n

The floor also continues a traditional drinking game of unknown provenance accompanied by the Danish song ‘Kongens Have’ by a band called TopGunn, and the Scandinavian residence hall classic Tour de Chambre party is, of course, also on the programme. But there are also quieter and more laid back communal activities like film evening and common dining.<\/p>\n

\u00bbI can only speak well of this place,\u00ab says Lukas Zeppelin, adding that even though all of the rooms are completely identical in terms of square metre-age and layout, you do get a good \u00bbpenthouse\u00ab view from the top of the building: \u00bbSo keep your fingers crossed that you will get a room on the ninth floor if you move in!\u00ab<\/p>\n

For a monthly rent of DKK 3,500, you get a room with your own toilet and bathroom, and access to a shared kitchen that you share with 13 other residents.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\">\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Frankrigsgadekollegiet<\/p>\n<p>Address: Frankrigsgade 50, 2300 Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<p>www.frankrigsgadekollegiet.dk<\/p>\n<p>Rent: DKK 3,500<\/p>\n<p>Application process: You need to study a certified Danish degree programme. They are so different \u2013 and this leads to a good dynamic.\u00ab<\/p>\n<h3>No expectations<\/h3>\n<p>This applies, for example, to people’s social commitment. There are, according to Lukas Zeppelin, \u00bbno expectations at all\u00ab placed on you as a resident. But it’s possible to be social if you want to.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt’s a great place if you’re not too much into the partying, but want something to happen once in a while,\u00ab says Lukas Zeppelin. \u00bbThat you do not want to be social all the time, but neither are you all alone. This is a great compromise for many people.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>You can quickly get involved in the various committees, however. Like the garden committee or the residents’ council, according to Lukas Zeppelin. The beer financing on site are taken care of by a beer fund, which Lukas Zeppelin, as chairman, considers to be one of the most important decision-making bodies in the dorm.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThat’s where you buy the brews!\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>There is also a party committee that is responsible for organising parties like the free bar party in the autumn, and the big \u2018tour de chambre’, which involves all the floors. Apart from the party room and the garden courtyard, there are no other common areas in the entire residence hall. The ninth floor, for example, has a lot of traditions associated with the annual spring cleaning.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\">\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n<p>There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n<p>Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n<p>This is a review by a student reporter. But in the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.<\/p>\n<p>Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews<\/a> we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00bbI always look forward to it,\u00ab says Lukas Zeppelin. \u00bbIt’s really boring to clean, so we dress up and get drunk \u2013 but then we have to do all the chores!\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>The floor also continues a traditional drinking game of unknown provenance accompanied by the Danish song ‘Kongens Have’ by a band called TopGunn, and the Scandinavian residence hall classic Tour de Chambre party is, of course, also on the programme. But there are also quieter and more laid back communal activities like film evening and common dining.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbI can only speak well of this place,\u00ab says Lukas Zeppelin, adding that even though all of the rooms are completely identical in terms of square metre-age and layout, you do get a good \u00bbpenthouse\u00ab view from the top of the building: \u00bbSo keep your fingers crossed that you will get a room on the ninth floor if you move in!\u00ab<\/p>\n<p><em>[This review has been written by a student reporter at the University Post. Rooms are between 12 and 27 m2 and the price is reasonable. The rooms are between 14.6-56 m2 and have private bathrooms. The kitchen is shared. The dorm has a very modern interior and has purposely kept an antique exterior, which creates a fascinating contrast. The vibe is very international as 40 % of the students are from abroad. It is also a very social environment and is known for its common Sunday dinners and themed Friday bar nights. The building itself has been under contraction and this brings its own set of challenges, including noise, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/students-forced-to-live-on-building-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">critical media attention from us at the University Post<\/a><\/strong> and other media. The address is on Amager, which you may have heard about, and what you may have heard might have been bad.\r\n\r\nHowever, The Frank is on the good side: It is near Amagerbro metro station, just 6 minutes from N\u00f8rreport, convenient to the metro and several bus opportunities. Step on, for example 5A and 2A, and you have reached City Center before you've found a seat.\r\n\r\nShopping in the area is not scarce! - you find are all kinds of supermarkets in the area, and Amagercentret, a shopping center, is just a five minute walk away. On top of the closest supermarket - which is across the street - you find a Fitness World and the beach is 10 minutes away. So there is no excuse not for not staying fit in The Frank. And with Amagerbrogade and its' wide selection of caf\u00e9s, restaurants and pubs\/bars no more than 10 minutes away, being close to the gym is a good thing. The area of The Frank is in general abundant with stuff to do and places to go. There are two gardens, a small and a bigger garden. In these you can grill, have a beer etc. and as a new thing we started a Pool Party tradition last summer. Inside you\u2019ll find our Party Room, for which the Party Comitee plans around five bashes each year. Two of them are yearly; Tour De Cuisine in January\/February and the Drink-all-you-can in June\/July. These are two parties you don\u2019t wanna miss! The parties are for everyone who lives at the dormitory so this is a great opportunity to meet people from other floors. You can also rent the Party Room and throw a party of your own.\r\n\r\nAnother tradition we have is Tour de Amager, where we dress up like typical Amager people and go for a pub-crawl at the pubs and bars in the area. This is usually a lot of fun because the local people are either very fun to talk to or get really annoyed by us being there (most of them are there every night).\r\n\r\nWe also have a Facebook group, where we tell each other about stuff that's going on at The Frank. This could be a movie on the big screen in the Party Room, an invite to tequila night on the 2nd floor or a love party on the 7th floor. Basically, it can be anything.\r\n<h2>The facilities on each floor<\/h2>\r\nYou can get to floor 1-9 by using the elevator or the stairs. When you leave the elevator there is a long hallway with 14 rooms. At the end of the hallway when you walked past the washing and the drying machine, you\u2019ll find the shared areas, such as the kitchen and the dining room.\r\n\r\nYou share the kitchen with 13 other students, which can be very frustrating. Since everyone has different cleaning habits, the kitchen can become quite a pigsty. When this happens, we set up a kitchen-meeting and remind each other to be more thorough next time. This usually helps. Other than this, it is in general very cosy to be in the kitchen, which is nice and big.\r\n\r\nWe also have a separate dining room, which has a wall of windows, that makes the room very light and the view is great from the higher floors. We use the dining room for a lot of occasions such as Christmas lunch (Julefrokost), floor parties, food-clubs and watching TV. We don\u2019t have a lot of channels but you can watch the main Danish channels and a few foreign channels. While you live on one of the floors at The Frank, you talk with many of your floor-mates daily, so you can become very close.\r\n<h2>The rooms<\/h2>\r\nWhen you step into a room there is a tiny hallway with build-in closets. If you continue forward you\u2019ll step into a unfurnished room which is 14 m2. The room has a big window, that\u2019s basically one of the walls of the room. This makes the room very light and it\u2019s possible to open the window so you can step outside on a narrow, but long balcony. The view is either to the City Center or to \u00d8resund and Malm\u00f8. Each room comes with a decent bathroom with a quite big shower area. In total the room is 20 m2.\r\n\r\nAll the things you need to use, such as water, electricity, TV, Internet and the washing machine, are included in the rent.\r\n<h2>The Frank's people<\/h2>\r\nYou will meet a lot of different people at The Frank and it is very different what people study. On one floor you can find students from CBS, from KUA, law students, medicine students and many others. People from any kind of higher education can apply.\r\n\r\nMost of the people are very nice and open-minded, so you\u2019ll always have someone to talk to \u2013 both while cooking and while partying. It can be difficult to meet people from other floors than your own if you don\u2019t attend the social events that is for everyone on all floors. Maj Kollegiet, was founded by Dorothea Hassager. Here, the entry requirements are a little different. Unlike the 4. Maj Kollegiet, which is open to all students, Hessagers Kollegium is only open to students who have completed 120 ECTS credits at the University of Copenhagen.\r\n\r\nThe residents share common areas with those from 4. Maj Kollegiet, agrees.\r\n\r\n\u00bbWe all share the common background that our grandparents were active during the resistance struggle,\u00ab he says. \u00bbHistory is tangible here.\u00ab\r\n\r\nTherefore, the most important moment of the year is May 4th at 20:36, when everyone stops whatever they are doing to listen to the message of freedom from 1945. I might also have used the word \u2018ugly\u2019 as a descriptive \u2013 and there is no doubt that the exterior of Bikuben Kollegiet (the 'Beehive') is unusual. Sitting between the old 19th century blocks of Amagerbro and the sandy-coloured university complex, Bikuben Kollegiet definitely stands out.\r\n\r\nThe University Post has reviewed the Bikuben dorm a second time. Read <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/dorms-disclosed-bikuben-the-quirky-beehive\/\">the later review here.<\/a>\r\n\r\n<h2>Brown, orange and concrete<\/h2>\r\nThe building was completed in 2006 which means that the dorm offers all the amenities a student can hope for. There is a fitness room, party hall, lounge, study room and several outdoor terraces. However the student rooms are much the same. Each person gets a bathroom and a kitchenette, and the room itself is spacious and white. Concrete is an integral part of the building\u2019s design which means that the ceilings in the rooms are made of this material, and that most rooms have a wall which is partly made of concrete.\r\n\r\nThe design of the common areas is dominated by browns and oranges. This design decision is often frowned upon by the inhabitants who find it a bit odd that anybody would choose these 1970's colors to match the dorm's expensive and modern furniture. Thankfully, the common kitchens are a neutral white, and \u2013 as anybody who has ever lived in an old Copenhagen apartment will be able to appreciate \u2013 there are dishwashers!\r\n<h2>Halloween, Christmas and social life<\/h2>\r\nLike the architecture, the social life on each floor is different. The most accurate description would be that it is what you make of it. Bikuben Kollegiet has its private Facebook group where people often post if they are having a kitchen party or if they are showing a movie in the lounge. Usually everybody is invited, and it is always a pleasure when a new face shows up.\r\n\r\nIf you want a social dorm life it is a great idea to join one of Bikuben\u2019s many committees. Both were preceded by pre-parties: The Pumpkin Party where we carved pumpkins for Halloween decorations, and the Christmas Decoration party where the Baking Committee served cakes and everybody folded Christmas hearts and Christmas stars.\r\n<h2>Life on the 4th floor<\/h2>\r\nMy floor is one of the most social in the dorm. Most of the time you\u2019ll find people hanging out in the kitchens and the common rooms, and we regularly organize events as well as consume a lot of boxed wine. This means that we have what we call \"Red Wine Friday\", which does not necessarily have to be on a Friday.\r\n\r\nSometimes we celebrate Red Wine Friday three times a week. On our floor, most days of the week are connected with a particular kind of alcohol: Cocktail Monday, Tequila Tuesday, Vodka Saturday and so on. We did however deem it necessary to develop Abstinence Wednesday too.\r\n\r\nEach Monday we have the official dinner club where the residents of the fourth floor cook for each other. Often many impromptu dinners happen too as a lot of the residents like to cook and make use of the opportunity to get many people together in order to be able to afford an excellent dinner on a student budget.\r\n<h2>A modern home<\/h2>\r\nWhile the beauty of Bikuben Kollegiet can be discussed, there is no doubt that it is a great luxury to live in a modern building. If you book the room, it is yours.\u00ab\r\n<h3>Soldiers barracks' vibe in the inner city<\/h3>\r\nBaseCamp Copenhagen actually has several locations, but the most coveted is the one that is in a converted barracks in the inner city. There's \u00bba bit of a soldiering vibe about it,\u00ab says Simon Stilling.\r\n\r\n\u00bbMany people don't even understand that this is a residence hall. They think it's some kind of office building or factory,\u00ab Simon Stilling explains. The building is listed as protected due to its historical importance.\r\n\r\n\u00bbIt's not built the way you would normally build a student residence. But it has so much charm over it.\u00ab\r\n\r\nInstead of soldiers, the building is now home to approximately 500 students in 463 rooms with training rooms, laundry facilities and its own cinema. You can hardly not be satisfied with the residence hall\u2019s location just across from the National Gallery of Denmark.\r\n\r\n\u00bbIt is super-central. I'm absolutely certain that people book this because of the location.\u00ab\n<!-- end of module 1 -->\n<h3>Diversity<\/h3>\r\nIt is mostly exchange students that choose to book a room at BaseCamp Copenhagen. The residence hall exploits this international profile by doing 'Culture Nights' inspired by their residents\u2019 country of origin. Most recently, the theme was Italy with wine and pasta.\r\n<div class=\"factbox\">\r\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\r\nThere are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.\r\n\r\nSome are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.\r\n\r\nThis is a review by a student reporter. We want this diversity. We want to exploit the fact that there are a lot of people here with different nationalities as a positive.\u00ab\r\n\r\nThe residents also get to know each other in the large communal kitchens and at the monthly Friday bar. But BaseCamp Copenhagen is not a party dorm.\r\n\r\n\u00bbOf course, we encourage people to go to parties and have fun. But this is not the only thing it is about,\u00ab says Simon Stilling. \u00bbYou can easily have social activities that are not about alcohol.\u00ab\r\n\r\nThe dormitory also organises other activities for this reason, like yoga, bathing in the harbour and film nights.
