I<\/span>n the 1960s, the Sofieg\u00e5rden building complex was occupied by young squatters\u2019 rights activists, the ‘slumstormer’s, that included the founders of the iconic Danish rock band Gasolin with Kim Larsen and Wili J\u00f8nsson. After four years of conflict, the city of Copenhagen finally succeeded in 1969 in throwing the residents out on to the street and demolished the dilapidated buildings.<\/p>\n

But the dream of cheap housing for young people still lives on, and Sofieg\u00e5rden, with its 156 flats, is home to approximately 240 residents. The place is a cross between a residence hall and a shared house, where you can live in a single room, your own apartment, or in a shared flat.<\/p>\n

Socialist mindset<\/h3>\n

\u00bbWhat makes this dorm unique is that it’s a very mixed crowd that lives here,\u00ab says Asta M\u00f8ller Neimann, who herself lives in a shared home in Sofieg\u00e5rden, \u2018Steinfass\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u00bbPeople are also slightly older than at the other residence halls.\u00ab<\/p>\n

This is probably because the waiting list is so long that you can easily end up waiting three years for a room. Several of the residents also have children, (and they can make use of the kindergarten that the residence hall shares a yard with).<\/p>\n

\u00bbThis also means that it is a yard that is less social in some ways,\u00ab says Asta M\u00f8ller Neimann. \u00bbThere is no party every day. You aren’t, naturally, together with each other, if you don’t do something for it yourself.\u00ab<\/p>\n

At the same time, however, Sofieg\u00e5rden is built upon a \u00bbsocialist mindset\u00ab due to its history. It is therefore the residents themselves who, through their residents’ councils and committees, determine themselves what kind of community they would like to have.<\/p>\n

\u00bbThere is a lot of stuff which is run by the residents themselves,\u00ab says Asta M\u00f8ller Neimann. \u00bbPeople in the yard often take the initiative for fun and social events.\u00ab
\n<\/p>\n

Greenhouse, ceramics room and canal view<\/h3>\n

On the roof is the Sofieg\u00e5rden greenhouse, which is also the focal point for one of the social committees at the dormitory, namely the greenhouse committee. They organise parties and get-togethers up there, where they offer snacks and drinks made from their own crops.<\/p>\n

There are often also other events that bring together the residents of the dorm, including yoga classes, communal dining, flea markets, a summer party, a Friday bar and soccer night.<\/p>\n

\u00bbIf you want to be social, there is ample opportunity to do this,\u00ab says Asta M\u00f8ller Neimann. \u00bbBut you have to take the initiative yourself. People don’t exactly kick in the door to your room.\u00ab<\/p>\n

\n

Dorms Disclosed<\/p>\n

In addition to greenhouse and party rooms, you also have access to a large number of small rooms in the basement, which include a pottery room, a workshop and a gym.<\/p>\n

The rent varies, depending on the room type and size, but in general, Asta M\u00f8ller Neimann says that staying at Sofieg\u00e5rden is \u00bbridiculously cheap\u00ab. She pays DKK 2,300 a month \u2013 and this for a view of the canal.<\/p>\n

The downside is the noise that comes from living so centrally in the city.<\/p>\n

\u00bbThe canal cruise comes sailing past every five minutes,\u00ab sighs Asta M\u00f8ller Neimann. \u00bbYou get this as part of the package.\u00ab<\/p>\n

Several of the residents also have children, (and they can make use of the kindergarten that the residence hall shares a yard with).<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThis also means that it is a yard that is less social in some ways,\u00ab says Asta M\u00f8ller Neimann. \u00bbThere is no party every day. You aren’t, naturally, together with each other, if you don’t do something for it yourself.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, however, Sofieg\u00e5rden is built upon a \u00bbsocialist mindset\u00ab due to its history. It is therefore the residents themselves who, through their residents’ councils and committees, determine themselves what kind of community they would like to have.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThere is a lot of one of the social committees at the dormitory, namely the greenhouse committee. They organise parties and get-togethers up there, where they offer snacks and drinks made from their own crops.<\/p>\n<p>There are often also other events that bring together the residents of the dorm, including yoga classes, communal dining, flea markets, a summer party, a Friday bar and soccer night.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIf you want to be social, there is ample opportunity to do this,\u00ab says Asta M\u00f8ller Neimann. \u00bbBut you have to take the initiative yourself. The rooms are between 14.6-56 m2 and have private bathrooms. The kitchen is shared. The dorm has a very modern interior and has purposely kept an antique exterior, which creates a fascinating contrast. The vibe is very international as 40 % of the students are from abroad. It is also a very social environment and is known for its common Sunday dinners and themed Friday bar nights. Lying in bed at night I hear people sitting outside talking, glasses clinking, and laughter filling the air. As a background to this I can often hear a guitar from another room or some girls singing along to old Spice Girls songs. And then there\u2019s the smell of a well-toasted sandwich, just as you thought you weren\u2019t hungry.\r\n<h2>Only girl in the world<\/h2>\r\nWaking up early in my dorm room is so quiet you forget that you are in the very heart of Copenhagen. The street is quiet as well as the hallway. Talking makes it seem like you are part of the only conversation in the world. This even though more than 150 students live here.\r\n\r\nAt Sofieg\u00e5rden there are co-habitations, two- and three-roomed apartments, and rooms like mine, which is around 25m2 with a door to my French balcony. And no, a French balcony is not actually a balcony but a door you open and then sit inside and spy on people on the street. Be aware that people bust you playing Big Brother if your soundtrack is too loud.\r\n<h2>The life of a baron<\/h2>\r\nWaking up, I can do as I please. I do not have to get dressed in order to go into the kitchen and I do not have to wait for anyone to be done taking a shower - I am the only one using it. This means that the only thing stopping me from constantly walking around naked and taking long showers is if I am running late, or thinking about the amount of water I am using.\r\n\r\nThen I act like a responsible student, thinking about the environment, before I go have a princess-worthy breakfast. Going from paying an average rent in Copenhagen to only 2600 kroners a month makes me feel richer than I am, which I intend to use fully, living like a baron. At the moment I have my own gym and table tennis-room as well, as I have yet to meet anyone there. I would not mind being the sharing kind of baron though.\r\n\r\nBesides having a room, which will be known in history for the room where I surprised everyone and became a professional table tennis player, there is plenty of ways to be active at Sofieg\u00e5rden. There\u2019s a gym full of equipment, and now the village-sentiments appears again; you can join a group of residents once a week to go play badminton at the local school. It\u2019s free and if you don\u2019t like badminton you are free to suggest any other sport.\r\n<h2>Get lost<\/h2>\r\nSpending a warm evening in the big court with wine and cigarettes you will meet people with the same idea, whereas the rooftop terrace always is rather empty. All in all, you are free to do as you please. You don\u2019t have any duties unless you have signed up for them. Here it is easy to live with other people around, yet stay out for days or spend an entire Sunday watching TV-shows, without feeling just slightly bad.\r\n<h2>Slow down<\/h2>\r\nIf too lazy to organize a party yourself, you can just sign up for the events that Sofieg\u00e5rden plans. This weekend there was the first Friday-bar of the semester and in a few days there will be a get-together-dinner to welcome new residents. Meeting people here is fairly easy, as you can simply use the variety of common rooms in your everyday life.\r\n\r\nResidents here study many different subjects, but it is normal to study a longer education, as you need at least two years left in order to even get the room. I might also have used the word \u2018ugly\u2019 as a descriptive \u2013 and there is no doubt that the exterior of Bikuben Kollegiet (the 'Beehive') is unusual. Sitting between the old 19th century blocks of Amagerbro and the sandy-coloured university complex, Bikuben Kollegiet definitely stands out.\r\n\r\nThe University Post has reviewed the Bikuben dorm a second time. Read <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/dorms-disclosed-bikuben-the-quirky-beehive\/\">the later review here.<\/a>\r\n\r\n<h2>Brown, orange and concrete<\/h2>\r\nThe building was completed in 2006 which means that the dorm offers all the amenities a student can hope for. There is a fitness room, party hall, lounge, study room and several outdoor terraces. However the student rooms are much the same. Each person gets a bathroom and a kitchenette, and the room itself is spacious and white. Concrete is an integral part of the building\u2019s design which means that the ceilings in the rooms are made of this material, and that most rooms have a wall which is partly made of concrete.\r\n\r\nThe design of the common areas is dominated by browns and oranges. This design decision is often frowned upon by the inhabitants who find it a bit odd that anybody would choose these 1970's colors to match the dorm's expensive and modern furniture. Thankfully, the common kitchens are a neutral white, and \u2013 as anybody who has ever lived in an old Copenhagen apartment will be able to appreciate \u2013 there are dishwashers!\r\n<h2>Halloween, Christmas and social life<\/h2>\r\nLike the architecture, the social life on each floor is different. The most accurate description would be that it is what you make of it. Bikuben Kollegiet has its private Facebook group where people often post if they are having a kitchen party or if they are showing a movie in the lounge. Usually everybody is invited, and it is always a pleasure when a new face shows up.\r\n\r\nIf you want a social dorm life it is a great idea to join one of Bikuben\u2019s many committees. Both were preceded by pre-parties: The Pumpkin Party where we carved pumpkins for Halloween decorations, and the Christmas Decoration party where the Baking Committee served cakes and everybody folded Christmas hearts and Christmas stars.\r\n<h2>Life on the 4th floor<\/h2>\r\nMy floor is one of the most social in the dorm. Most of the time you\u2019ll find people hanging out in the kitchens and the common rooms, and we regularly organize events as well as consume a lot of boxed wine. This means that we have what we call \"Red Wine Friday\", which does not necessarily have to be on a Friday.\r\n\r\nSometimes we celebrate Red Wine Friday three times a week. On our floor, most days of the week are connected with a particular kind of alcohol: Cocktail Monday, Tequila Tuesday, Vodka Saturday and so on. We did however deem it necessary to develop Abstinence Wednesday too.\r\n\r\nEach Monday we have the official dinner club where the residents of the fourth floor cook for each other. Often many impromptu dinners happen too as a lot of the residents like to cook and make use of the opportunity to get many people together in order to be able to afford an excellent dinner on a student budget.\r\n<h2>A modern home<\/h2>\r\nWhile the beauty of Bikuben Kollegiet can be discussed, there is no doubt that it is a great luxury to live in a modern building. Maj Kollegiet, was founded by Dorothea Hassager. Here, the entry requirements are a little different. Unlike the 4. Maj Kollegiet, which is open to all students, Hessagers Kollegium is only open to students who have completed 120 ECTS credits at the University of Copenhagen.\r\n\r\nThe residents share common areas with those from 4. Maj Kollegiet, and they help to preserve the traditions of the dorms.\r\n<div class=\"factbox\">\r\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">4. Maj Kollegiet, agrees.\r\n\r\n\u00bbWe all share the common background that our grandparents were active during the resistance struggle,\u00ab he says. \u00bbHistory is tangible here.\u00ab\r\n\r\nTherefore, the most important moment of the year is May 4th at 20:36, when everyone stops whatever they are doing to listen to the message of freedom from 1945.
