The dormitory currently houses 20 students of University of Copenhagen – all young, gifted, and handsome folk, who call themselves alumni of Borchs collegium.

Century old frenemies

Founded in 1691 by the multifaceted professor in philology, medicine and botany, Ole Borch, the dormitory has many traditions, some dating hundreds of years back.

These include celebrating the first snow with rum toddy in the garden and also the founder’s birthday culminating in a splendid feast with abundances of port wine.

SEE THE FULL ‘DORMS DISCLOSED’ UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

The dormitory shares strong bonds with some of the other old dormitories in the city centre – the prominent Valkendorf, Vartov, Ehlers, and Regensen, the latter being the biggest and most famous of them, and therefore also subject to a fundamental hatred from all the others. The rivalry also exists between the other small dormitories, resulting in pranks, vandalism, and theft – though always in a friendly tone.

Step into Hogwarts

The student rooms differ in size, though not in price. Some have one big room. Others have two rooms, and the lucky few have two rooms and a mezzanine, literally making it a small apartment for the sheer price of 1.400 kroner. Incredible? Yes. Furnished? No.

The building itself stretches over five levels, three of them inhabited by humans. The ground floor holds five students sharing one kitchen, shower, and toilet. In addition to that, the library is also found here. Boasting hundreds of dusty books, some dating back before the 19th century, and a grand piano, it is quite the sight – and rather intimidating to newcomers.

But never judge a book by its cover. The first floor houses 7 people and the second 8, each floor sharing one kitchen, shower, and toilet. From the rooms facing the street, we can spy on drunken people in the street who are visiting ‘Den Glade Gris’ – the happy pig, in English – a place that truly lives up to its name. The alumni lucky enough to have a room facing the garden can enjoy the night’s silence and the sight of other alumni studying/sunbathing in the summer. Quite the sight, at times.

To eat, to chat or to dance, that is the question

If you’re not in the mood to cook, different food clubs will make you dinner several times a week at a cheap price. All in all, there is plenty of opportunities to eat together or just socialize around something else in the house.

Besides all of this, we have a cellar where the (free) washing machine is found. Other things worth mentioning down there, is the storage rooms, the workshop, and the wine cellar(!) where residents can find agents to help them pursuing all sorts of different objectives – getting clean clothes, fixing a bike (getting dirty clothes), or starting a party.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.

Speaking of parties, we also enjoy the luxury of our very own ballroom, found on the top floor. Big parties and sometimes lectures are held here, and when it is vacant we often take pleasure in a game of table tennis in the light of the glorious disco ball. In the other end of the top floor is the TV room. Alumni do not seem to find any excuse small enough to spend an hour or three in its big, soft couches, watching a movie whilst at times waiting for their hangovers to lift.

Getting in

The alumni presently residing are responsible for running the dormitory on a daily basis. That includes garden work-days twice a year and other interchanging duties once every few months. Really, it isn’t that hard and it helps establish a sense of ownership over the place, as well as shaping you up for eventually taking care of your own life, which some need more than others.

As for the alumni, they are a mix of students from the Humanities, Theology, and Science faculties. This is due to the constitution, which only allows students from mentioned faculties to move in. Also, you have to have finished at least two years of study before you can apply.

Despite that fact, we still boast a rather diverse crowd of people between 23 and 29 – only Danes at the moment – with an even gender distribution. This is entirely because we choose who moves in. Or, that is, two selected alumni read all applications every time a room is up for grabs, call some in for a talk and then pick whoever they feel fits in the best. Pure luxury.

Keep an eye on KU-net

The location makes it easy to satisfy any need a struggling student might have. Supermarkets, clothing shops, cafes, bars, and parks are just a few of the many offers within a five-minute bike radius. Especially worth mentioning is Paludan Bogcafé, a 30-second walk around the corner and an excellent place to study and maintain your caffeine addiction.

All in all, this must surely be the best place to stay for a student in all of Copenhagen! Though we expect everyone to participate in everyday maintenance we also get to decide many things about which direction we are moving in next. So – keep an eye out for entries on KU-net about vacant rooms, and you might just find yourself residing in our downtown chateau.

[This review has been written by a student reporter at the University Post. If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it ‘Dorms Disclosed’]

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Students review their own housing and accommodation in Copenhagen.

[This guide has been continually updated since it was first published in 2014. The entrance is positioned in the basement level and the façade is anonymous. It blends in perfectly with the surrounding red and yellow brick buildings of the northern part of Amager.

Hørhus Kollegiet has 192 residents and several bigger neighboring residence halls. This means it is not among the renowned dorms in Copenhagen. Nevertheless, the unobtrusive exterior conceals a living residence bursting social and active residents.

The neighborhood

Hørhus Kollegiet is located in the city district Sundbyvester, right between Islands Brygge’s attractive dwellings and Hørgården's subsidized housings, a former ghetto. The dormitory is the outcome of a design competition and it was finished in 1972.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

From the kitchens and rooms facing west at the top of the eighth floor, you can almost get a panoramic view of the protected natural area Amager Fælled. At night, the nearby metro station, DR Byen, and Koncerthuset make a beautiful scene illuminating the area with white and blue colors. You might even be lucky to catch a view of Tivoli's fireworks show.

To the east, the flat land of Amager spreads. On a windy day, the seaweed from the beach might travel all the way from Øresund to the dorm carrying a a rather distinct smell.

Close to both city and nature

Despite Amager's tarnished reputation of being located at the outskirts of Copenhagen, you will find most of what you are looking for here. Shopping facilities are great at either Fields, Fisketorvet or Amagerbrogade, all equipped with cafés and restaurants too.

Transportation options are also great. The metro is a six-minute ride to the center and located just 400 meters from the dorm. There are several bus stops around the area as well. The dorm is within five minutes' walk to University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Humanities and the IT University of Copenhagen. Nature is just arond the corner and the protected area Amager Fælled is great for walking, biking or jogging. It is possible to swim in the ocean to both the east and west of the dorm.

The only thing you will not find plenty of in Amager is nightclubs. In return, you will find a lot of cheap local pubs and bars as well as a plethora of dorms throwing parties open to other dorms. Just recently, an association of party committees of the dorms of Amager was founded, named Kollegiefestværket. It works to give the residents new opportunities to bond and share experiences. Its first party was thrown in May and many more will come in the future.

Great facilities and rooms

The unfurnished 12.3 square meter rooms are equipped with balcony, bathroom and 100/100 MB internet connection. When the residents of the dorm are not isolating themselves in their rooms during exam periods, they meet in one of their floor's two kitchens. Here they cook, watch a movie or play a game.

The residents of the dorm are mostly Danish but exchange students from around the world can be found on any floor. The dorm does a good job making a smooth transition for the many residents that move out from their parents' houses. Everything from laundry to electricity to help from the caretaker is included in the rent. The dorm even has its own gym facilities, a tennis court, a soccer field and a music room.

A vibrant and vivid dorm

The dorm is an independent institution. This means that the residents themselves are in charge of the residence. In practice, engaged residents have the freedom to initiate activities through the residents' council. Residents with special hobbies use this possibility to the benefit of the dorm.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

This summer, a few people began working on an urban garden project, setting up trays with soil and sowing seeds. Next year, the dorm will probably have its very own supply of fresh herbs. A little less than a year ago, a handful of people started working on a dorm magazine whose first edition appeared both online and in the kitchens in July. The dorm also has its own band that plays at some of the parties. Besides these hobby-based projects, other projects are based on more practical concerns such as the safety of the dorm and water conservation.

Six parties and Café Coma

Six parties are held each year with around 50 attendants at the smallest and 150 at the largest. The ‘Tour des Cuisines’ unites both the floors and the entire dorm. Each floor is encouraged to decorate their floor's shared facilities, come up with a game and serve a drink when the rest of the dorm is coming by for 30 minutes.

At midsummer, the dorm's annual festival is held, and is open to everyone. The garden is transformed to a cool festival space where five bands are playing throughout the day and night, all culminating with a great party in the café.

The café is also the center to the weekly bar nights. Its' laid back atmosphere with retro furniture, a pool table and foosball, makes it a perfect place to meet fellow residents. On weekdays, people meet to play a board game or a game on the Playstation 3 and now and then the projector will be turned on to watch soccer, Eurovision Song Contest or other events. If any of this sounds appealing, then come by at a party or a bar night and meet with the residents of Hørhus Kollegiet.

[If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it 'Dorms Disclosed']

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Review: Hørhus Kollegiet
Amager may not rest high on most people's top 10 dreams of location. Every kitchen is decked out with a communal fridge loaded with beers, cokes, and chocolate milk that is replenished on a Thursday in the basement, when the empty bottles are returned for recycling.

To purchase a drink in our corridor you simply scan the barcode of your drink and your personal bedroom barcode, though every kitchen has their own method of doing this. Your drinks are added to your bedroom tab, and the corridor accountant sends you your bill over the next few months, together with all the other contributions, such as the Food Club. The drinks fridge somehow works, there’s a huge element of trust here in Egmont, which is pretty much absent in many British universities.

A compact village

There is a 'madklub', directly translated to ‘food club’, every night where someone cooks for everyone who signs up on the corridor website. Normally about 12-14 people will join. It is very rare that the entire corridor expect to be fed unless it’s a special Easter or Christmas dinner.

Egmont is your mother, and pretty much takes care of the small as well as the big, from toilet paper and light bulbs to new dish cloths on a Tuesday to renting out furniture if necessary. It comes with so many comfortable perks, leaving you to never think about the mundane.

The Kollegium often resembles a compact village, the basement snakes round with all sorts of amenities like a bike workshop, a sauna, a gym, both a laundry room and drying room, study rooms, printers and photocopiers, chill out lounges equipped with projectors and pool tables, and music rooms. There’s a clothes bin where discarded clothes are left, if you get there early they are yours to take, if you don’t they’re cleaned and put on sale in the Egmont thrift shop. Outside there’s a bike shed, and BBQ patios as well as communal garden space where Egmonters sunbathe in Copenhagen’s 10 degrees.

You will need a calendar

Sports facilities can be found with the Basketball court, table tennis, foosball, petanque area and of course with Fælledparken opposite. There are two football teams, male and female, appropriately named the ‘Breezers’ and ‘the Hangovers’.

For those less sports-inclined there’s a creativity room for arts and crafts, a beer brewing association, a newspaper and a newsletter and the odd capoiera to participate in. Egmont even has its own annual 3 day festival, which takes place in August.

Aside from this, the Egmont calendar is dotted with traditions and unique gatherings, such as the 'vennerfest' (party for outside friends), Giraffe party, the gala party, the tour-de-chambre...the list goes on. Most events go along the lines of a designated theme, drinking activities, and opportunities for your friends to meet your friend’s friends and mingle.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

Your average Thursday night, sees the cafe open up, a loaded bar that dish out Irish coffees at DKK 5 and any other liquor your heart desires. Every week a different corridor hosts the cafe, and voluntarily works behind the bar and sets the theme and playlist of the night.

Lifetime deal once you're in

Getting into Egmont is pretty difficult; a small resident council headed by a dean or principal approves your application. It’s a place that prides itself on socialising, and being a social creature is part of the requirement in getting in. There’s a real communal atmosphere: Egmonters wear their dormitory as a badge of identity, which has a near legendary status, most Egmonters still host reunion parties for the 50s and over and the cupboard rooms are filled with logbooks from the 1970s.

There’s a sense of everyone mucking in together, and you’re expected to play an active role in your corridor’s parties, events and meetings. Detail is everything and you will see people go to extraordinary lengths to make dinners and gatherings perfect.

I realise that I’ve been very lucky to get a place here, the rent is cheap and it’s got loads of charm and character. You won’t see many foreign exchange students around here; the ratio is in favour of the Danes. But for me personally, that’s what makes this place so attractive as a foreign exchange student, it provides me with that opportunity to mingle with Danish students and get a real feel for living in Denmark, something that is not always guaranteed on exchange. Though it has been challenging at times, I’ve had a fantastic and unique experience, and I would stick with Egmont if I had to do it all over again.

Review: Egmont Kollegiet — first review
Getting into the huge brick building in inner Østerbro is not easy, but once you are in, Egmont Kollegiet provides an identity today and a packed calendar forever. The close connection between the school and the dormitory provides an ambitious environment, where everybody has an mutual understanding of when to study and when to party.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

'Hygge' at the fireside

The low buildings fit nicely into the surrounding scenery. The wooden houses are mainly black with white posts at all entrances to symbolize the birch trees in the forest.

With a location directly connected to forest and lake, the opportunities for a varied leisure life is splendid. You can go trekking, walking, running or mountain biking in the forest, canoeing or kayaking at the lake, enjoy the parkour track or even go hunting. The students have their own hunting fellowship.

The residents live in four-person houses with a private room and shared kitchenette. They share bathrooms two by two. The houses also have a storage area with a locker for guns and space for extra stuff. Both the rooms and kitchenette have white walls, wooden floors and the ceiling wooden bars are visible.

Vegetable garden and climbing wall

The outdoor area offers large, open grassland. During the spring and summer months many students spend a lot of their time here playing ball games, sunbathing or studying. In the evening they assemble in front of the shared building, centrally placed in the dormitory area and sit in front of the campfire barbecuing and enjoying life.

In the shared building you find TV lounges and a large, shared kitchen. The open fireplace, which can also be used outside, is a cozy focal point a cold winter's night. There are also laundry facilities, private freezer cabinets and a half cellar room belonging to each house. There are furrows behind the houses where residents may have a vegetable garden or perennial plants.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

The dormitory has its own gymnasium, where students play badminton, basketball and tennis. There are fins and ropes and a small gym with spinning bikes, rowing machines and dumbbells. A brand new climbing wall is also being built as of writing this article.

Healthy food and networking

Should you tire of your own cooking skills, residents - as all other users of Skovskolen - can buy lunch and dinner in 'Skovskolens Spisehus', the school restaurant. They serve healthy and seasonal food without unnecessary additives and at cheap prices - and it tastes heavenly. The coffee in the breaks is free.

The dormitory also has its own pub called 'Flækken'. It is a log cabin built by former students. 'Flækken' is open virtually every day and offers dancing opportunities, good ol' fun and drinks at student friendly prices.

It is the students themselves who run 'Flækken'. Here you can meet with other students under informal conditions. Furthermore, you have the opportunity to expand your professional network, as 'Flækken' often is visited by leaders and other professionals from the green industry. They are staying at Skovskolen as participants on a wide range of courses and postgraduate training.

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Review: Skovskolen
Forest, lake and pasture are natural parts of everyday life at Skovskolen.
