When there is a party – and there is often – you decide for yourself whether you want to take part or not.

»There is a big difference between people. On our corridor, we have four or five people who are very social, and four or five people who come in, cook their meals, say hello, and that’s it,« says Rasmus Lund Nielsen.

»Everyone is welcome, but not everyone makes an effort. But that is just how it is.

Absurd number of parties

With almost 300 residents in one residence hall which also has its own café and bar, it can sometimes get a bit wild.

»There are an absurd number of parties. In fact, there have been so many that it has been a real problem during the corona epidemic,« says Katrine Boe Eriksen. Problems are taken up by the residents’ council, which recently agreed on common rules to curb the dorm’s festive proclivities.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

This is a review by a student reporter. But in the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.

But only a bit, because the social life is one of the reasons why it is worth while to live in a dorm, according to Katrine Boe Eriksen. Apart from the residents’ council, you can join the café association, the bar committee or the party committee. And if you have not in a good enough shape from biking back and forth to the dorm, you also have access to both a basketball and soccer pitch.

»They really do a lot for the social part of things out here,« says Katrine Boe Eriksen.

»We have just, for example, set up all the volunteers at the residence hall with a day on a party bus, all paid. Booze and food ad libitum. We really do a lot to make it cool and fun to be here.«

And if there are too many complaints about the noise, it is fortunate that the party can be moved to the basement, which is soundproofed, according to Rasmus Lund Nielsen:

»When we’re down here, we can turn the music up to the max.«

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS But it is actually not that bad.

Hvidovre Hospitals Kollegium, a forty-year-old dorm, lies in scenic surroundings right next to Hvidovre Hospital. The bus stops right by the dormitory and the trip to Copenhagen’s central station takes about 15-20 minutes.

Furthermore, there are plenty of bicycle sheds available at the parking lot, so if you prefer to use your trusty bike to go places, it shouldn't be a problem.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

From the kitchen you can access a large inner garden (six in total), each with trees, benches, and a grill. In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

Next to the parking lot there is a basketball court and a frequently used soccer field where the residents play against each other and test their soccer skills. Other than that there are common laundry rooms and a fitness room in the basement.

Spaces for socializing

There are several possibilities to be social and meet people from other hallways in the common facilities such as the Café. Here the students can buy beer, sodas, and coffee, among other things, play pool or beer pong, or relax with some board games.

On weekends when the Café closes at 12 PM, the Bar opens. In the bar you can get every kind of assorted drinks you can think of and then go to show your moves on the dance floor. Both the Café and the Bar are driven by the residents and depends on everybody's effort to be part of the community.

There are also several grand parties every year hosted by the committees of the Resident Council (Beboerrådet) and the Party Committee (Festudvalget). Among these are the Octoberfest, Halloween, and the great summer party where all of the residents meet in one of the gardens, have a barbecue, and celebrate that the summer has arrived. Other than that there is the occasional Tour de Chambre and Tour de Cousine party.

If you choose to get a place here, you are in for a great time!

There is a newer review of Hvidovre Hospitals Kollegium here.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it 'Dorms Disclosed'

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Review: Hvidovre Hospitals Kollegium (first review)
Although it's not in the heart of the city, you'll still have a great time here, writes our student reviewer
If you have ever traveled through Frederiksberg to Valby over the only big hill in Copenhagen, you may very well have passed South House without even realizing it. 'South House' is a new student housing building in Valby near the Copenhagen Zoo. It opened its doors to the first tenants in October 2015. Unlike a dorm or collective variety of student housing, South House offers private apartments. As a result of this (and likely the city's current student housing crisis) apartments at South House are more expensive than many other student housing options. However, if you treasure your privacy and want a “real apartment” of your own, South House may be for you.

South House is technically located in Valby, but it actually sits on the border of Frederiksberg and Valby, near the Copenhagen Zoo. It is also within close striking distance to Vesterbro by bicycle. Søndermarken, and Valby station are also just a short walk away. South House is situated on one of the main roads going through Valby and Frederiksberg, Søndre Fasanvej (known as Nordre Fasanvej in Frederiksberg). University of Copenhagen campuses CSS, Panum, and Universetets Parken can all be reached in less than 30 minutes by bicycle (all are under 5 km away) under normal weather and traffic conditions.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

The top 3 floors of South House are comprised of individual student apartments, most of which are simple studios with a private bathroom and kitchen and no balcony. Everything was just installed last October and residents enjoy brand new hardwood floors, and Siemens kitchen appliances. Some select units include unique large terraces, perfect for setting up a garden or a large outdoor patio area. In addition to that a handful of units also offer private balconies. One community room is located on each floor which also includes a full size oven (apartments have kitchenettes only).

On the 1st floor of the building are doctors' offices, and the ground floor consists of a “Lidl” supermarket, perfect for the lazy student who can take a quick elevator ride down to the market when a case of the munchies sets in. The basement includes secure storage units for each apartment, bicycle parking, and laundry facilities. The building is wired with both cable and fiber internet. Students are also in the process of creating a group internet coop at the time of writing.

Special considerations

Although the prices at South House are higher than most student housing (DKK 6600– 9719) most students should qualify for “Boligstøtte” (housing support). In the case of this reviewer, I receive about DKK 1000 per month off my listed rent via 'Boligstøtte' . This is due to the fact that it is not shared accommodation and each unit has its own private kitchen and bathroom. Boligstøtte makes the monthly rent a lot more affordable, especially if you are cohabiting with a partner.

Another special consideration is at the time this review was written, South House is still a very new housing project undergoing major construction and remodeling. Although tenants are allowed to live here during this time, construction noise and construction workers are still active from approximately 7 am-7 pm. In addition to this some tenants have reported maintenance issues such as water being shut off, leaking, heating problems, ventilation issues, internet problems, and various other issues.

These faults are being dealt with individually during the construction process and will hopefully be resolved for future tenants. Furthermore, garbage collection, laundry facilities, storage units, internet, and bicycle parking, have only just became available this week. Thus, these services should be reviewed again at a later date to give a more thorough reflection of that portion of the review.

Final thoughts

At the time of writing, I recommend South House as a good student housing facility which still has room for improvement.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

One of the obvious benefits of South House is that it is not a shared dorm. Its nice having your own private apartment, but still having the student atmosphere as a subtle backdrop without the overwhelming obnoxious overtones of a dorm or shared housing coop . Its also nice qualifying for 'Boligstøtte' (housing support) as a result of this amenity. The building has nice features, grocery shopping is easy since you live above a store, and the location is very good for Valby.

The biggest drawback for South House is of course the monthly rent, which for student housing is on the higher end of price spectrum.

The constant daily construction work on the building is also a drawback, but this should (hopefully) not be a problem for future tenants. Other drawbacks include maintenance issues which also hopefully will not be a problem for future tenants.

Despite the benefit of extra privacy that South House provides, there is also a con to this by stripping away a certain lack of community. Regardless of these drawbacks, the city of Copenhagen has a serious student housing crisis. And South House contributes to alleviating a small piece of this for those who can afford it. I am happy to live here despite some of the drawbacks. Overall - I would recommend it.

Review: South House
Apartments at South House are more expensive than average, however if you treasure your privacy and want a 'real apartment' of your own, the brand new facilities it offers may be for you

On the border of Vesterbro and Valby overlooking Copenhagen is a ten story tall zigzag-shaped building called Otto Mønsteds Kollegium. Known as the OMK by its residents, the building houses 300 students who are all struggling to balance their academic obligations with the temptations that life in the dormitory offers.

Life on the ten floors

Life at OMK is different whether you are so lucky as to live on the tenth floor, "the penthouse", or on the first floor. On the tenth floor, you sip your morning coffee with the view of Copenhagen’s towers and green rusted roofs, and on New Year’s Eve, the kitchen is invaded by envious residents from the lower floors who make the journey up the stairs to see the fireworks.

On the first floor, however, the view that goes with the morning coffee is quite different. On the weekends, you can enjoy the sight of hungover guests who struggle to remember where they parked their bicycles the previous night, which makes for a rather entertaining pastime Saturday morning.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

Cramped for space

Regardless of what floor you live on, the student rooms are the same. There are two corridors on each floor, East and West, and in each corridor 15 people share a kitchen.

When living at OMK you almost inevitably become an expert in simple living. Your bedroom is simultaneously your living room and your study, and you cannot own more furniture than can be crammed into 12 m2. Sounds tempting? Well, actually it is not half bad. Every room is 16 m2 including a tiny hall with a fitted closet and a bathroom. The room also has a small French window which makes the, admittedly, small rooms seem bright and rather spacious for 12 m2. The kitchens are not impressively big either, but just big enough to seat all 15 people who share the kitchen at once.

Being 15 people sharing a kitchen requires a certain level of organisation, and though space can be tight in at times, we make it work. There are dining clubs several days a week, where we take turns cooking for each other, and in the summer time, the barbecue in the garden behind the building is a popular alternative to the kitchens.

A family feeling

Sharing a kitchen is more than just a matter of organisation. The kitchen is also the spot for late night kitchen parties when the disco ball is turned on, the floor is transformed to a dance floor, and the French window serves as the smokers’ corner.

Or it is the place where you hang out in the afternoon, when you do not want to sit in your room and study or in the evening for an hour of board games. In the morning, people try to wake up sharing the newspaper and listening to the radio, and when it is somebody’s birthday, the two neighbors make a splendid breakfast for everyone.

The kitchen is more than just a kitchen, and the people you share it with are more than just your hall mates. Living together so closely fosters a feeling of community and you can end up feeling more like one big family than like roommates.

Something for everyone

What the dormitory lacks in square meters is made up for in other facilities. The most important common area is the bar, Ottos Trøst (Otto’s Comfort). The bar is open every Friday and a draught beer is DKK 20 – it is a perfect place to bring your friends or to head down after a dinner in the kitchen.

The bar has a stage which has often been the scene of OMK’s very own band, Husorkesteret (the House Orchestra), which fills the dance floor with popular cover songs. Every spring, the bar hosts the Otto Festival, a festival that stretches over a weekend, where many different bands come to play and where residents from all the kitchens have the chance to tend the bar. The bar is also the scene for the big parties that are held every three months or so, and for showings of big sports events such as the Champion League’s final.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

Other popular facilities are the reading room which is divided into a serious quiet zone and a homier, more relaxed living room which has recently been redecorated by three residents; a small gym in the basement; and the home cinema where you can go and watch a DVD on the big screen. We also have a living room with a piano, a sauna, guestrooms, rooms for group work, a laundry room and a bicycle workshop. And then there are of course the mandatory table football and table tennis.

Adults or children?

Being a resident of OMK myself, I sometimes wonder if we are all just a bunch of kids pretending that we have grown up just enough to live away from home. We like to play games, cut loose and be silly. Twice a year every kitchen has what we call "Gangcrawl" which is a tour down the corridor with a stop in each room, where the resident has prepared a theme, a drink and a game. The idea is that nothing is too silly for a "gangcrawl", and this idea is truly explored.

And at the big parties, tradition is that the party starts with a battle in some silly game between East and West on each floor. The latest example form the Western-themed spring party was a joust in piggyback riding and beer lassoing.

The loose and silly atmosphere is not limited to party-time only. You will often find people playing cubb or croquet in the garden, being absorbed in an intense game of table football or shouting silly things at each other out the kitchen windows. All in all, I think we just like to have fun. And those who are into having fun and exercising at the same time can join the football teams or the badminton club.

The Outside World

When your neighbors guitar playing becomes too loud, or the confinement of the kitchen too claustrophobic, it might be time to take a step outside the bubble of the dormitory life. At OMK, we are lucky to have Vesterbro right around the corner. A stroll down Sønderboulevard, and you are guaranteed to return home in good spirits, and if you crave some nature, Søndermarken is a ten minute walk away.

At OMK we like to invite the outside world into our little bubble as well. To get in, you have to be on the waiting list for about a year and students from all universities and faculties and from the professional bachelor degree programs are welcome. Therefore, the residents of OMK are a diverse crowd, though mainly Danish students. Maybe the next new resident will be you…

[If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it 'Dorms Disclosed']

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Review: Otto Mønsteds Kollegiet
Are the residents children or grown-up's?
