C<\/span>ollegium Juris is located right in the heart of the central N\u00f8rrebro district of Copenhagen, but not many people apart from the dormitory’s 53 residents know about it. And not many are aware of the fact that you do not need to study law to live in the residence hall \u2013 even though law students do have priority in the application process.<\/p>\n

Application process:<\/strong> Motivation letter application via the college website.<\/a> You must be enrolled on a longer Danish higher education programme, have passed at least 120 ECTS credits, and have what corresponds to a grade point average of at least 7 in the Danish system. Preference for law students.<\/p>\n

Behind the slightly anonymous fa\u00e7ade from the year 1917, without even a name on the dormitory, a mix of Danish and international students share their daily life (and kitchen \u2013 but not toilet and shower!) with each other. The residence hall opened in 2012 after a renovation by the same company that did the Tietgenkollegiet in the Amager district.<\/p>\n

You have to have a grade average of seven … but go ahead and apply anyway<\/h3>\n

Collegium Juris was initially founded with the purpose of being both academic, and international.<\/p>\n

\u00bbAt the same time, it is also a social dorm, of course,\u00ab says resident Henriette Lyngkrogh. The residence hall has a reading room and aims for a 50\/50 mix of Danish and international students.<\/p>\n

It is also because of the residence hall’s academic focus that \u2013 technically speaking \u2013 there is a requirement that you need to have passed 120 ECTS with a grade point average of 7 or more in order to stay there.<\/p>\n

\u00bbBut just apply anyway, right?\u00ab says Emilie L\u00f8bner Schefferling, who with Henriette Lyngkrogh sits in the so-called nomination Committee, which assesses applications.<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt’s much more about who you are as a person. Whether you want to live in a dorm and why you want to live in a dorm. Not whether or not you have above 7 as a grade average.\u00ab

There is good social cohesion across all four floors, according to Emilie L\u00f8bner Schefferling.<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt means a lot that the residence hall is not that big. It makes a difference. I moved in during the corona crisis, so I walked into a bubble that had become like a small family who just went about taking care of each other.\u00ab<\/p>\n

\n

Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n

This is a review by a student reporter. But in the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.<\/p>\n

The residents get to know each other through the course of their daily lives, but also at film evenings, parties, and sit-down dinners, including international dinners, where the many exchange students’ cooking skills are exploited to the fullest. One resident from Mexico, for example, brought grasshopper salt and worm salt to Henriette Lyngkrogh’s kitchen. Feast days and public holidays from different countries are often celebrated in the kitchens, and football matches are more exciting than usual when you root for different countries’ teams, says Henriette Lyngkrogh.<\/p>\n

The rooms, which are all equipped with their own toilet and bathroom, vary in size, and the monthly rent is between DKK 4,000 and DKK 5,800. Residents have, in addition, access to a communal kitchen on each floor, where each of the residents\u2019 cupboards is decorated in dorm style with newspaper clippings and pictures that showpiece the owner. The kitchen also serves as a living room with a couch and TV, and there is a common room, washroom, training room, and reading room in the basement. The first floor has a balcony with a barbecue, and a hammock that opens out to the residence hall’s communal green garden.<\/p>\n

The communal rooms are also used for the annual gala ceremony, where the guests, apart from the residents themselves, include alumni. The speaker last year was lawyer and debater Jacob Mchangama. At the ‘Fellow’s Day’, which is held annually, the residents hand out positions in the various social and academic committees that organise dormitory life.<\/p>\n

\u00bbThe people we get in are people who really want to take the initiative and do some partying. The people who would like to live here for the life of a dorm student and not just to have a room.\u00ab<\/p>\n

You do not need to clean anything else than your own room. Paid cleaning assistance for the kitchens and other communal areas is part of the bargain when you sign a tenancy contract.<\/p>\n

And not many are aware of the fact that you do not need to study law to live in the residence hall \u2013 even though law students do have priority in the application process.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\">\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Collegium Juris:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Address:<\/strong> N\u00f8rre All\u00e9 6, 2200 Copenhagen N<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/collegiumjuris.com\/\">www.collegiumjuris.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Monthly rent:<\/strong> DKK 4,000-5,800<\/p>\n<p><strong>Average age:<\/strong> 24<\/p>\n<p><strong>Application process:<\/strong> Motivation letter application via the <a href=\"https:\/\/collegiumjuris.com\/application-process\">college website.<\/a> You must be enrolled on a longer Danish higher education programme, have passed at least 120 ECTS credits, and have what corresponds to a grade point average of at least 7 in the Danish system. Preference for law students.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Behind the slightly anonymous fa\u00e7ade from the year 1917, without even a name on the dormitory, a mix of Danish and international students share their daily life (and kitchen \u2013 but not toilet and shower!) with each other. The residence hall opened in 2012 after a renovation by the same company that did the Tietgenkollegiet in the Amager district.<\/p>\n<h3>You have to have a grade average of seven … but go ahead and apply anyway<\/h3>\n<p>Collegium Juris was initially founded with the purpose of being both academic, and international.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbAt the same time, it is also a social dorm, of course,\u00ab says resident Henriette Lyngkrogh. It makes a difference. I moved in during the corona crisis, so I walked into a bubble that had become like a small family who just went about taking care of each other.\u00ab<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\">\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n<p>There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n<p>Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n<p>This is a review by a student reporter. But in the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.<\/p>\n<p>Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews<\/a> we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The residents get to know each other through the course of their daily lives, but also at film evenings, parties, and sit-down dinners, including international dinners, where the many exchange students’ cooking skills are exploited to the fullest. One resident from Mexico, for example, brought grasshopper salt and worm salt to Henriette Lyngkrogh’s kitchen. Feast days and public holidays from different countries are often celebrated in the kitchens, and football matches are more exciting than usual when you root for different countries’ teams, says Henriette Lyngkrogh.<\/p>\n<p>The rooms, which are all equipped with their own toilet and bathroom, vary in size, and the monthly rent is between DKK 4,000 and DKK 5,800. Residents have, in addition, access to a communal kitchen on each floor, where each of the residents\u2019 cupboards is decorated in dorm style with newspaper clippings and pictures that showpiece the owner. The kitchen also serves as a living room with a couch and TV, and there is a common room, washroom, training room, and reading room in the basement. The first floor has a balcony with a barbecue, and a hammock that opens out to the residence hall’s communal green garden.<\/p>\n<p>The communal rooms are also used for the annual gala ceremony, where the guests, apart from the residents themselves, include alumni. The speaker last year was lawyer and debater Jacob Mchangama. At the ‘Fellow’s Day’, which is held annually, the residents hand out positions in the various social and academic committees that organise dormitory life.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThe people we get in are people who really want to take the initiative and do some partying. The people who would like to live here for the life of a dorm student and not just to have a room.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>You do not need to clean anything else than your own room. Rooms are between 12 and 27 m2 and the price is reasonable. The dorm has a very modern interior and has purposely kept an antique exterior, which creates a fascinating contrast. The vibe is very international as 40 % of the students are from abroad. CPH Village has moved on from the concept of recycling ships\u2019 containers and now builds the homes in wood, but the rooms\u2019 dimensions remain the same: 11 square metres, including one small kitchen, per room. The building itself has been under contraction and this brings its own set of challenges, including noise, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/students-forced-to-live-on-building-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">critical media attention from us at the University Post<\/a><\/strong> and other media. The building has been completely renovated, which means all interior is brand new and (almost still) shiny, however the exterior has been kept beautifully antique. The interior architecture and design is quite extraordinary and very modern which is a perfect contrast to the exterior of the dorm. Collegium Juris is a place where controversial clich\u00e9s about law students can be put to bed \u2013 and where there is enough room for the residents to represent whichever personality, interests and field of study they have ambitions to pursue.\r\n\r\nThe collegium houses a majority of law students \u2013 however, almost every one of them has quite different interests within the field which makes the dorm academically vigorous. It is however a board requirement that a minimum of 10 non-law students are represented within the dorm.\r\n\r\nThe Law students particularly benefit from constructive feedback from each other especially during exam periods. Non-law students on the other hand seem to benefit by always having someone to help out if there\u2019s a need for legal advice \u2013 and isn\u2019t there always a need for legal advice? So far the combination has worked out phenomenally.\r\n<h2>\u201cParlez-you-Dansk\u201d?<\/h2>\r\nCross-cultural understanding is a keyword for life at the collegium. No less than 40% of the residents are international and all Danish residents must have some kind of international background.\r\n\r\nInternational residents either study for one or two semesters as part of a normal exchange program, are enrolled in 1 or 2-year LL.M.-programs or work as ph.d. students.\r\n\r\nParticularly this part of the collegium is what makes for a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere. Each semester we say our farewells and welcome new nationalities. Even though the collegium is still brand new, it has already become a tradition to send our old residents home and welcome new residents, Danish as well as international, with a gathering for their floor \u2013 mostly including coffee and cake or dinner and drinks.\r\n\r\nCollegium Juris is in many ways a vivacious collegium, but it is by far the international feeling between residents that especially creates the pulsating life. I mean who doesn't love the combination of an Australian surfer dude serenading the hall on his guitar, a Japanese girl making homemade sushi from her mothers recipe for Sunday dinner, an Ethiopian who always brings back Ethiopian coffee from his trips back home, a\r\nspontaneous Summer October Fest to celebrate our German residents, topped of with a Danish resident cooking a traditional dinner of ''stegt fl\u00e6st med persillesovs''?\r\n<h2>Beers and briefcases<\/h2>\r\nIt is no secret that you\u2019ll find very ambitious people residing in Collegium Juris. However, this is a place where everyone works hard to play hard!\r\n\r\nAll the residents are very social and always up for a good time. The basement in the building doesn't just work as our study library but also provides huge common rooms where it\u2019s hard not to play beer pong and beer football. Each month the floors take turns as to host themed Friday Bars, which are always a great success, and the themes and preparations get better each time.\r\n\r\nMost floors also gather for a common Sunday dinner which residents take turn in preparing. It's the definition of family time for everyone. Often the kitchen afterwards becomes a cinema and you\u2019ll find a room full of residents cuddling in fatboys with their dunas eating cookies and popcorn. The design makes the building, to a large degree, soundproofed despite its location on the busy Amager F\u00e6lledvej thoroughfare.\r\n\r\nThis is the second time that the University Post reviews the Bikuben dorm. Social events are held for everyone at the same time \u2013 and there are many of them.\r\n\r\n\u00bbI hesitate to say that we are a party dorm, because we really try to make sure that this is not a nuisance to anyone,\u00ab says Johanne B\u00f8nl\u00f8kke H\u00f8gfeldt. \u00bbBut yes \u2013 we do have a lot of parties.\u00ab\r\n\r\nMore precisely, one party is planned every month under themes like 'Tour de Bikuben', ' Beer pong tournament' and a summer festival with semi-provocative names like 'Warm and wet III'. The New Year is celebrated on the dormitory's large rooftop terrace, which is also used for food clubs and gardening in the warmer months of the year.\n<!-- end of module 1 -->\n<h3>Resident councils and green bees<\/h3>\r\nYou are not excluded from the community if you are not into parties, far from it. There are also a number of active committees that you can take part in to make your mark on the dormitory and to meet the other residents.\r\n\r\nOne of the committees is 'the green bees', which is responsible for finding new ways to make the dorm as sustainable as possible using all kinds of different methods. The rent varies between the different types of rooms, but is somewhere between DKK 2,800 and 4,100.\r\n<h3>Community atmosphere<\/h3>\r\n\u00bbIt's a very little residence hall,\u00ab says resident Rikke M\u00f8ller.\r\n\r\n\u00bbIt's really, really cosy. It has a bit of a community atmosphere.\u00ab\r\n\r\nIt is difficult to hide from the others in Ryesgade, according to Rikke M\u00f8ller.\r\n\r\n\u00bbIt is not a requirement that you participate actively in the community. But it's just a lot, lot cooler if you do it. But you don't have to live up to some kind of social code.\u00ab\r\n\r\nThe small size of dormitory means that it is easy to exert an influence over your kitchen, and there is no bureaucracy stopping you.
