H<\/span>\u00f8rhuskollegiet on Amager houses 192 students on eight floors, for the relatively low monthly rent of DKK 2,600. But not many people know about it, says resident Pernille Hammer.<\/p>\n

\u00bbWe are a very anonymous dorm. I have no idea how we have managed to stay so invisible.\u00ab<\/p>\n

The dorm, housed in an old concrete building from the 1970s, offers much more than just a roof over your head. For example, there is a reading room, tennis court, and sauna, all of which are used diligently by the residents.<\/p>\n

Not the most social of dorms<\/h3>\n

Of course, there are also party rooms with sticky floors and a communal bar that goes by the name ‘Caf\u00e9 Koma’. But H\u00f8rhuskollegiet is not really a party dorm, says Pernille Hammer.<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt is definitely not the most social dorm you can find. But it is not like there is no social life at all.\u00ab<\/p>\n

According to Pernille Hammer, the dorm is very inclusive in that regard. There is room for all types of students.<\/p>\n

\u00bbThere are some people who keep completely to themselves; then there are those who we often see in the kitchens, but who do not really come to parties. And then, of course, there are those who are involved in everything that is arranged,\u00ab says Pernille Hammer, and adds that not much is expected of you as a resident, as long as you clean the communal kitchen when it is your turn.<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt is entirely up to you how much you want to participate or not participate in the social social life of the dorm.\u00ab
\n<\/p>\n

Committees for (just about) everything<\/h3>\n

If you are the type of person who wants to get involved, there are four annual parties \u2013 including summer parties where you can take part in a star race and get drinks from the free bar \u2013 and a \u2018tour des chambres\u2019, where students visit each others\u2019 rooms, is held twice a year. There is also a ‘tour des cuisines’, where residents visit each other\u2019s kitchens.<\/p>\n

\n

Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n

This is a review by a student reporter. But in the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.<\/p>\n

The self-governing dorm also has a large number of committees, which residents can join in order to keep the place running.<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt’s by far the easiest way to get to know people from other floors,\u00ab says Pernille Hammer.<\/p>\n

The committees include the all-important residents’ council and the complaints committee, which handles internal problems and disagreements, as well as the seemingly less vital channel committee, which keeps track of which TV channels the dormitory has access to.<\/p>\n

Soon there will also be a flag committee for those who dream of taking care of the dorm\u2019s flag and flagpole.<\/p>\n

But H\u00f8rhuskollegiet is not really a party dorm, says Pernille Hammer.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt is definitely not the most social dorm you can find. But it is not like there is no social life at all.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>According to Pernille Hammer, the dorm is very inclusive in that regard. There is room for all types of students.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThere are some people who keep completely to themselves; then there are those who we often see in the kitchens, but who do not really come to parties. "}]},{"acf_fc_layout":"Content","content":"<h3>Committees for (just about) everything<\/h3>\n<p>If you are the type of person who wants to get involved, there are four annual parties \u2013 including summer parties where you can take part in a star race and get drinks from the free bar \u2013 and a \u2018tour des chambres\u2019, where students visit each others\u2019 rooms, is held twice a year. There is also a ‘tour des cuisines’, where residents visit each other\u2019s kitchens.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\">\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n<p>There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n<p>Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n<p>This is a review by a student reporter. Rooms are between 12 and 27 m2 and the price is reasonable. The rooms are between 14.6-56 m2 and have private bathrooms. The kitchen is shared. The dorm has a very modern interior and has purposely kept an antique exterior, which creates a fascinating contrast. The vibe is very international as 40 % of the students are from abroad. It is also a very social environment and is known for its common Sunday dinners and themed Friday bar nights. According to one of our reviewers it is something for both geeks and partygoers.\r\n\r\nThe rent may be high but it includes all your meals. In this dormitory you can get a 15-20 m2 room in a large mansion in \u00d8sterbro that you will share with 60 other residents. Common facilities are many: a large dining hall, TV-room and a study hall overlooking \u00d8resund. Rooms vary greatly in size, from 11-25 m2, but the price remains a staggeringly low. Other than a room, you gain access to a great number of common spaces and activities: from a large ballroom to a library and study hall. In 2020, 184 new rooms were ready on the outskirts of the Vesterbro district. CPH Village has moved on from the concept of recycling ships\u2019 containers and now builds the homes in wood, but the rooms\u2019 dimensions remain the same: 11 square metres, including one small kitchen, per room. The residents are friendly and helpful. The rooms are private and between 10-16m2. They contain a small bathroom and kitchenette, but there is also a common kitchen. The dorm houses about 300 residents. The building itself has been under contraction and this brings its own set of challenges, including noise, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/students-forced-to-live-on-building-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">critical media attention from us at the University Post<\/a><\/strong> and other media. This is one of the most unique dormitories in Denmark, in the middle of a forest and close to a lake. The houses are built of logs and the residents each have 10m2 with shared kitchens and bathrooms. Each hallway has a common kitchen which is also used as a place to hang out and watch TV. CPH Studio Hotel boasted ''modern, functionalist-inspired architecture''. It promised ''several excellent facilities'', such as a gym, a lounge-area, a ''well-equipped'' laundry room, a common caf\u00e9\/kitchen area for breakfast, and later, a restaurant. It told tales of rooms of ''the highest quality''.\r\n<h2>The building<\/h2>\r\nWhat students arrived to on September 2, 2015, was quite different. From 16:00 to 03:00, there were hordes of people outside the building, soaking up free beer and pizza provided as compensation by the staff. There was machinery. There were exposed rooms, possessing neither windows nor walls. There was those steel things that hold up buildings. It was a real mess.\r\n\r\nSlowly, but surely, the workmen managed to straighten out the building. It is now less like the abandoned prison of before. At one point, a security guard showed up, making it seem more like an actual, unabandoned prison. But no more.\r\n\r\nNow, the long corridors, partially furnished rooms, and spooky, glass roof terrace all contribute to a general feeling that I am on a large naval or cruise ship. I am a sailor. My cabin is one, but there are many. There is no wi-fi on my floor, but they\u2019re working on it. There is a small playpark next door that I didn\u2019t realize was there. Frankly, it is OK.\r\n<h2>The room<\/h2>\r\nWhat\u2019s in a room? Well, as the international student experience of CPH Studio Hotel has clearly demonstrated, it really depends on the room.\r\n\r\nLike many others, my room was not ready when I arrived at CPH Studio Hotel. I shared a room for a couple of nights with a good friend of mine - a reasonably enjoyable, if inconvenient, experience that for me was more or less alleviated by the promise of EUR 200 compensation. After that, I was shuttled into various rooms I didn\u2019t stay in, on account of being out too late, and finally I was given my room.\r\n\r\nWhen I was young, I had a shared bedroom with my younger sister. There was a bunkbed. One particular night terror involving sleep paralysis and the ghost of E.T. had, then, long since taught me the perils of sleeping on the top bunk, close to the ceiling, where you\u2019re only one sit-up from faceplanting a plaster stalagtite.\r\n\r\nThus it was so that I signed up to the \u2018A\u2019 bed in my shared room - the one on the futon by the window.\r\n\r\nAlthough the windows had no blinds and the sun was in my face all day and night, I luckily had brought a sleepmask along to Denmark from where I had lived before, where it was necessary to cover my eyes from perpetual sunlight. The sleepmask system worked great, until one of the builders accidentally vacuumed it up. He was very worried, but sleepmasks are cheap and Hoovers are powerful. I went and bought another. I still have no blinds.\r\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\r\n<div class=\"title\">\r\n<div class=\"label\">Read also: <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/media-students-cant-register-address-at-krimsvej-dorm\/\">Media: Students can't register address at Krimsvej dorm<\/a><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"teaser_text\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>The utilities<\/h2>\r\nThe bathroom is exceptionally ill-designed. A concrete wetroom housed in an MDF cardboard box, the ventilation system does not really cope with the pretty obvious problem that condensation poses for wood. (Look it up.) The sink is too small for my giant face. The water does not really flow downhill to the drain - it just sits there. However, yesterday\u2019s recent discovery of a SECRET CABINET BEHIND A MIRROR (!) made things much better. Now I feel like Toothpaste James Bond.\r\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\r\n<div class=\"image\">\r\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\">After being promised a kitchenette, it was rather underwhelming to discover that, in Denmark, ''kitchenette'' translates to a single, electric hotplate; some pans; a fridge; an MDF frame\/desk\/thing; and cutlery. I really like to cook, so this isn\u2019t ideal - although we have been promised extra hotplates.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\nHowever, it\u2019s not all so bad. After I vacuumed the dust from the room and proceeded to spruce it up with some useless, colourful tat from a popular emporium of plastic nonsense, my room actually began to feel a bit like an actual, real place. For example: I have a rug now. This is unprecedented. A real rug of my very own \u2013 and it really does tie the room together. There are many people out there who do not have their very own rugs in their very own building site units, and I feel marginally lucky.\r\n\r\nAs well as this: the blank, alienating grey expanse of the room is a real canvas for whichever false illusions you may have about how that colour-change LED Buddha statue you bought from Tiger just says so much about you. Make it your own - it isn\u2019t as terrible as it seems.\r\n<h2>Verdict: 3\/5 \u2013 It\u2019s getting better all the time<\/h2>\r\nOkay, so the rooms are austere. There are strange, although pleasant men with machines, who wake you up at odd hours with their reasonably quiet door-knocking. You feel like you\u2019re sneezing a bit more than usual because of the dust. The sun is in your face the whole day and night. Worst of all, you have to live in a building site full of people who have clearly never slept anywhere worse than a building site.\r\n\r\nHaving said that, let\u2019s look on the bright side. The sun is out, sometimes. LIDL is just around the corner. Living next to the metro station makes you feel geographically relevant. There\u2019s a very pleasant beach nearby. You could be sleeping under a bridge. You could be sleeping on the cold, concrete patio of a cricket ground with a single duvet between 5 of you. You could be 14 years old again. You could be dead.\r\n<div class=\"factbox\">\r\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\r\nThere are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.\r\n\r\nSome are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.\r\n\r\nThis is a review by a student reporter. When do we ever get what we pay for? Have you ever paid for a holiday? Rented a car from a strange man who demands you just ''leave the cash on the front seat after you\u2019re done''? Have you ever been to a Sting concert? Been to British university? These sorts of terrible rip-offs are the things that bring people together. I\u2019ve seen people giving each other beds for the night, lending them useless thumbtacks, and giving them bed linen. I\u2019ve seen friendships forged in the fire of an unfinished building. I\u2019ve seen things.\r\n\r\nLet me tell you, you will never get a refund from Sting - just a cold, hard, toothy smile. CPH Studio Hotel, on the other hand, is a shining beacon of effort and hard work - supremely inadequate and sluggish hard work, but hard work nonetheless. Moaning is not going to speed anything up. I am sure the staff and Housing Foundation people are just as stressed, annoyed, and worried about the construction delays as you are. Have you seen them lately? They look exhausted.\r\n<h2>Not the staff's fault<\/h2>\r\nTo be honest, the passive-aggressive Facebook comments made by some affected residents, accusing the staff, who are trying to improve the situation as best they can, of everything from wholly deliberate deception, up to and including fraud, illegal contractual violations (with some truth), and being totally evil, demonstrates a clear lack of empathy and understanding with the people who, while having perhaps played a major unintentional role in your mild, short-term discomfort, are the only five or so people who are doing anything to try and help a collection of 300-odd people all with their own individual problems.\r\n\r\nYes, things suck. Everything is terrible. Life is hard. But to quote Field of Dreams: if you build it, they will come. And if you haven\u2019t really built it, not yet, they will still come - they\u2019re contractually obliged to. Two months\u2019 rent refund and an added cash bonus might not be enough. Maybe we deserve more, but we forget that, in all the mess, that one bright day, we too might have the ghosts of dead baseball players hitting and pitching in our corridors, up against those glass doors.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, you\u2019re having a real experience here, okay? You have an interesting anecdote to tell other people. You have a thing.\r\n\r\n''My house isn\u2019t built yet,'' you say. ''I live in a darkened room without curtains. The dormitory currently houses 20 students of University of Copenhagen - all young, gifted, and handsome folk, who call themselves alumni of Borchs collegium.\r\n<h2>Century old frenemies<\/h2>\r\nFounded in 1691 by the multifaceted professor in philology, medicine and botany, Ole Borch, the dormitory has many traditions, some dating hundreds of years back.\r\n\r\nThese include celebrating the first snow with rum toddy in the garden and also the founder's birthday culminating in a splendid feast with abundances of port wine.\r\n\r\n<strong>SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen<\/a><\/strong>\r\n\r\nThe dormitory shares strong bonds with some of the other old dormitories in the city centre - the prominent Valkendorf, Vartov, Ehlers, and Regensen, the latter being the biggest and most famous of them, and therefore also subject to a fundamental hatred from all the others. The rivalry also exists between the other small dormitories, resulting in pranks, vandalism, and theft - though always in a friendly tone.\r\n<h2>Step into Hogwarts<\/h2>\r\nThe student rooms differ in size, though not in price. Some have one big room. Others have two rooms, and the lucky few have two rooms and a mezzanine, literally making it a small apartment for the sheer price of 1.400 kroner. Incredible? Yes. Furnished? No.\r\n\r\nThe building itself stretches over five levels, three of them inhabited by humans. The ground floor holds five students sharing one kitchen, shower, and toilet. In addition to that, the library is also found here. Boasting hundreds of dusty books, some dating back before the 19th century, and a grand piano, it is quite the sight - and rather intimidating to newcomers.\r\n\r\nBut never judge a book by its cover. The first floor houses 7 people and the second 8, each floor sharing one kitchen, shower, and toilet. From the rooms facing the street, we can spy on drunken people in the street who are visiting 'Den Glade Gris' - the happy pig, in English - a place that truly lives up to its name. The alumni lucky enough to have a room facing the garden can enjoy the night's silence and the sight of other alumni studying\/sunbathing in the summer. Quite the sight, at times.\r\n<h2>To eat, to chat or to dance, that is the question<\/h2>\r\nIf you're not in the mood to cook, different food clubs will make you dinner several times a week at a cheap price. All in all, there is plenty of opportunities to eat together or just socialize around something else in the house.\r\n\r\nBesides all of this, we have a cellar where the (free) washing machine is found. Big parties and sometimes lectures are held here, and when it is vacant we often take pleasure in a game of table tennis in the light of the glorious disco ball. In the other end of the top floor is the TV room. Alumni do not seem to find any excuse small enough to spend an hour or three in its big, soft couches, watching a movie whilst at times waiting for their hangovers to lift.\r\n<h2>Getting in<\/h2>\r\nThe alumni presently residing are responsible for running the dormitory on a daily basis. That includes garden work-days twice a year and other interchanging duties once every few months. Really, it isn't that hard and it helps establish a sense of ownership over the place, as well as shaping you up for eventually taking care of your own life, which some need more than others.\r\n\r\nAs for the alumni, they are a mix of students from the Humanities, Theology, and Science faculties. This is due to the constitution, which only allows students from mentioned faculties to move in. Also, you have to have finished at least two years of study before you can apply.\r\n\r\nDespite that fact, we still boast a rather diverse crowd of people between 23 and 29 - only Danes at the moment - with an even gender distribution. This is entirely because we choose who moves in. Or, that is, two selected alumni read all applications every time a room is up for grabs, call some in for a talk and then pick whoever they feel fits in the best. Pure luxury.\r\n<h2>Keep an eye on KU-net<\/h2>\r\nThe location makes it easy to satisfy any need a struggling student might have. Supermarkets, clothing shops, cafes, bars, and parks are just a few of the many offers within a five-minute bike radius. Especially worth mentioning is Paludan Bogcaf\u00e9, a 30-second walk around the corner and an excellent place to study and maintain your caffeine addiction.\r\n\r\nAll in all, this must surely be the best place to stay for a student in all of Copenhagen! Though we expect everyone to participate in everyday maintenance we also get to decide many things about which direction we are moving in next. The town centre is less than a 10 minute bike ride away. Reaching the beach, KUA, ITU or Islands Brygge takes less than 5 minutes. The dorm is surrounded by everything you could possibly need in your everyday life: supermarkets, shops and a lokale mall called the Amager Center.\r\n\r\n<strong>SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen<\/a>\r\n<h2>An inaccurate first impression<\/h2>\r\nThe exterior of the dorm consists of twelve almost identical looking big concrete blocks with deep red windows. The dorm was built in the 70's and looks massive with its grey concrete walls. At first glance it does not seem like a tempting place to live.\r\n<h2>Beauty is on the inside<\/h2>\r\nHowever, when you enter the dorm you you realize that it has a warm and friendly atmosphere. This is not just because of the festive decor and Christmas trees, but because of a unique feeling of community that you experience. There is an endless array of activities and a corresponding number of different facilities on offer. There is a ceramic studio for doing pottery, a gym, a music room with a recording studio, a dark room, and many more.\r\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><img title=\"\" src=\"\/old_files\/the-bar-down-wonder-photo-1.png\" alt=\"\" \/>A new addition is the IT room. An extra benefit that is available to the dorm residents is the option of getting professional assistance if they experience any IT-related problems. The new study room has unique lighting system that matches the natural cycle of sunlight throughout the day. The lamps in the room get progressively brighter as the sun rises. Likewise as the sun starts to set the lamps get progressively dimmer.<\/div>\r\nAnother new feature is the event room which will be ready in spring next year, with a stage for live performances. The new event room can also be converted into a movie room and contains bean bags and a huge screen.\r\n\r\nThe dorm's IT-system was renewed, including the lock system, Internet and some info screens. There are also some changes to the outdoor facilities, as the dorm has a new green area with a table tennis table, a grill and a hammock.\r\n<h2>Want a room? Yes, please!<\/h2>\r\nConsidering all the great things that the dorm has to offer, It is hardly a surprise that there is a long waiting list and people usually have to wait around two years before they can move in. The dorm is home to approximately 1,800 people and only students are allowed to apply.<img title=\"\" src=\"\/old_files\/play-ground-for-kids-photo.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\r\n<h2>Different rooms, for different needs<\/h2>\r\nOresundskollegiet offers several types of rooms. The least expensive type of room available does not contain a private kitchen and costs around DKK 2,000 per month.\r\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><img title=\"\" src=\"\/old_files\/room-photo-2.png\" alt=\"\" \/>Maria Bjorn has one of those rooms and has lived in the dorm for 1 \u00bd years. She enjoys the sense of community that is present at the dorm and the many opportunities to socialize: \u201cIt is the perfect combination of having my own space and being part of a community. If I want to be around people I just have to go into our kitchen.\u201d<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><img title=\"\" src=\"\/old_files\/room-photo-1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\">She shares the kitchen with 13 other students and has her own room with a bathroom. But there are also family friendly flats that include a kitchen and more rooms. The many different activities on offer make it easy to connect with others. Michael Jepsen just moved in last year in April, but has already joined the bar team. He likes the effort the dorm makes to keep daily life run smoothly and also that they providing new and interesting facilities for students to enjoy.\r\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><img title=\"\" src=\"\/old_files\/it-room-photo.png\" alt=\"\" \/>The bar \u201cDown Wonder\u201d is open from Thursday till Saturday and is yet another way for people to get to know each other.
