Hagemanns Kollegium in the middle of the embassy district in Østerbro, you start by entering the hall, known as ‘Hallen’. In the centre of the room is the ‘book of appeals’, where residents write messages to each other, just as their predecessors have done since the college was founded in 1908.

On the walls hang J. F. Willumsen’s famous painting ‘A Mountaineer’ and its counterpart ‘A Physicist,’ from 1904 and 1913, respectively. The former is known as a symbol of the liberated woman, which harmonises with the fact that the college was the first of its kind in Copenhagen to offer rooms to female students.

SEE THE FULL ‘DORMS DISCLOSED’ UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

Geeking out over dinner

Of the total of 61 rooms, two thirds are reserved for students from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where the dorm’s founder, Gustav Adolph Hagemann, was rector.

G. You be a student on a 5-year higher education programme and have passed 60 ECTS. Two thirds of the rooms are reserved for DTU students.

The remaining third of the rooms were made available to other types of students because Hagemann wanted DTU students to have the opportunity to learn from philosophers and artists, for example, »to get a broader worldview,« explains resident Marcia Søgaard Brinck.

»There are a lot of interesting people here. And people still care a lot about learning from each other,« says Marcia Søgaard Brinck.»Everyone just sits and geeks out over dinner.«

On weekdays, lunch and dinner are served by the dorm’s chef in the large communal kitchen. These meals are included in the price of the monthly rent, which is at the higher end, at DKK 5,210.

However, residents cannot completely avoid cooking – they have to take turns helping in the kitchen, and this is mandatory, as are cleaning the common areas and other tasks.

This is because the dorm is self-governing, and it is therefore the residents’ own responsibility to keep everything running smoothly.

»We really care about the dorm a lot,« says Marcia Søgaard Brinck. »We feel like this place actually belongs to us.«

Like one big family

The history of this dorm is palpable in the building, and residents still celebrate both G. A. Hagemann and his wife Mathilde’s birthdays every year with an excursion to the couple’s grave, followed by a gala.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

This is a review by a student reporter. But in the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.

»In general, we are a very traditional and social dorm,« says Marcia Søgaard Brinck. »It’s like living with one big family.«

»It’s almost more like a commune,« adds fellow resident Nicolai Fürstnow, whose parents also lived in the dorm and strongly encouraged him to apply. »They said it was great to live in a place where you could learn something from others.«

Nicolai Fürstnow had to apply a few times before he got a place, but often the time between application and admission to G. A. Hagemanns Kollegium is short. At least nowadays, you do not have to steal signposts or write speeches for ducks, which used to be part of the application process.

Now it is mostly about being part of the family through thick or thin, says Marcia Søgaard Brinck: »We emphasise that you prioritise the community aspect; that you are there for the others both in good and bad times.«

[This review has been written by a student reporter at the University Post. Located in Amager – a short ride southward from the central city – the area of is a mix of modern offices, artfully-designed residences and vast open spaces.

No two apartments are the same

In "Signal" – as residents affectionately refer to it – there are four residents per apartment. Each apartment has a kitchen, a small living room, two shared toilets and four individual bedrooms.

Although the units share the same skeleton, no two apartments ever look the same! What strikes you as you enter someone’s apartment is how differently it’s furnished from your own. From sofas to tables, posters to curtains – every apartment has its individual personality that you may soon grow to recognise as home.

In some way, each apartment ends up being a cumulative memory, as the common area inherits the decor and furniture of past tenants. Yet, it is perpetually reshaped by current residents and therein lies the uniqueness of each unit.

Good room mates are all about luck

Besides the interior, every apartment is also unique due to one crucial element– the people living in it. With its diverse mix of local and international students, chances are high that you’ll end up living next to someone from halfway across the world!

However, your roommates are not options you can pick and choose. It can be daunting that a factor as important as your apartment mates depends solely upon the luck of the draw. If you’re lucky, you could get a harmonious group dynamic that works like a well-oiled machine. Per contra, variations include unfortunate clashes in personalities but by and large, most maintain cordial relationships with their roommates.

Regardless of whether you like your roommates, living in a shared apartment certainly entails shared responsibility. The golden rule: Cleaneth up after thyself!

Needs more communal areas

As mentioned above, Signal houses a fairly large number of exchange/international students which imbues the atmosphere with a desire to socialise. Unfortunately, the general consensus is that the architecture of the building does not fully tap upon that potential, nor does it ideally facilitate it.

This is due to the lack of communal areas within the building itself. Apart from chance encounters in the laundry room and semi-awkward (just the tiniest bit too long) elevator rides up, it’s hard to meet new people in everyday life.

The only communal area is the common room located on the ground floor. It is rather well-equipped with a foosball table, a projector and screen, a disco ball (yeah!) and a full kitchen. However, it has to be booked in advance which makes it a little inconvenient for spontaneous sessions or meetings by chance.

A constant stream of social events and weekly parties

However, that doesn't mean to say social life is non-existent! Firstly, living with apartment mates already creates a good base level of social interaction. This would be less convenient in one-person single units, where many lament the loneliness of independent living. Humans are social creatures after all! Dining together or just sitting around a table, chatting at the end of a long day provides the much-emphasised feeling of hygge.

Furthermore, there are numerous social events in Signalhuset, publicised via the Facebook group. There are organised tour de chambres, barbecues, hygge sessions, potluck dinners, sports events and many more. These provide excellent opportunities to meet people from all corners of the world (or the block). If you make the effort to socialise, you’ll surely find the friends you’re looking for. And with that many international students, weekly parties are in no short supply!

Convenient public transport and free laundry

Many choose Signal because the metro (Ørestad station) is just a stone’s throw away, making everything highly-accessible. Not to mention, the airport is two S-train stops away which is a brownie point if you foresee a lot of travelling in your future.
By bike, you can reach KUA in 15-20 minutes via a straightforward route that is manageable even for the most directionally challenged.

If nothing above has piqued your interest, then this will surely entice you: free laundry! There are many washing machines and dryers available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. (Disclaimer: Much to the dismay of other residents, the offer of free laundry only extends to exchange students.) Don’t scoff at the insignificance of free laundry – it’s a huge deal when living on a student budget in one of the most expensive cities in the world!

Amager offers more than you think!

Speaking of free things, there is a library conveniently located a five-minute walk away, where there are computers for free public use. Ørestad Bibliotek provides a conducive place to study when staying in is just too distracting.

Arguably, the largest draw of staying at Signal is its location directly opposite Fields, Scandinavia’s largest shopping mall. Fields is an integral and inescapable part of any Signal resident’s daily life. It houses an entire host of different shops and services, which makes it exceedingly convenient to get anything you require.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

Bilka is a grocery megastore that sells quite possible everything you could ever need and more. It possesses a youthful atmosphere, a colourful body of residents and enviable amenities. It also affords you the potential of sociability while maintaining your privacy.

Living abroad brings a multitude of new experiences, but as the days go by, you begin to recognise your little space as comforting and familiar. The average age of the residents is higher than most other dorms, as students must have finished two years of studies prior to acceptance. They also strive towards and equal gender distribution within the dorm.

The fact that only 61 residents live at the dormitory creates a community feeling, where everyone knows one another. All residents want to be part of the community and are willing to work for it.

Everyone participates in the shared meal arrangement and takes responsibility for the cleaning and the maintenance of the dorm.

Different responsibilities

Moreover, each resident is member of a group with additional responsibilities for the everyday life.

There’s ''Køkkengruppen'' (The Kitchen Group) who are responsible for the communication between the residents and the kitchen employees, and “Festgruppen” (The Party Group) who are responsible for some of the traditional parties held at GAHK.

Other groups arrange ''out-of-house events'', like trips to the theater arranged by ''Kulturgruppen'' (The Culture Group) or a climbing competition organized by ''Sportsgruppen'' (The Sports Group).

Almost like a hotel

Today, the dormitory works as a self-governing institution, where the residents manage the day-to-day operations. This includes everything from budget, to cleaning, to deciding which new students should be part of the community.

As a very special feature of the dormitory, two employees work in the kitchen on weekdays to prepare lunch and dinner to all residents. The meals are the main gathering point at GAHK. Here, it doesn’t matter what floor you live on - everybody mixes around across floors, acknowledging and caring for one another.

The meals take place in the great dining hall in the basement. On weekends, the residents cook themselves with groceries bought by the kitchen staff.

Heartbreaks and politics

The meal arrangement gives surplus energy to the residents, since grocery shopping and cooking are already dealt with when returning after a long day at the university.

During dinner, there’s a great atmosphere among the residents, and everything from political agendas, heartbreaks, sports events, and reality-TV are debated.

These social hours are especially appreciated during exam periods, where it can sometimes be difficult to find the time and energy for anything other than studying.

Many years - many traditions

As student housing with many years of history, a lot of traditions have been established. Among the most important is G. A. Hagemann’s birthday, which is celebrated with a picnic every year.

The residents rent a bus and drive to the burial site to remember and honour the man who founded such a unique and special place for the students of Copenhagen throughout the years.

The wife of Hagemann is also praised annually. This is celebrated in November with an annual galla. The residents show up in their shiniest dresses and suits for a three-course meal, speeches and ''les lanciers'' dancing, a traditional style of classical dance.

Vodka and the Russian anthem

G.A. Hagemann's arch-rivals, Nordisk Kollegium, are situated just a few hundred metres down the road. Through the years, Nordisk Kollegium and GAHK have been competing in having the best rooms in Copenhagen.

This rivalry is tested each year at Kastellet by an intense and nerve-racking tug-of-war competition. The evening is always completed with the two dormitories partying with each other – sometimes with a few pranks involved.

At the end of the year, the greatest party is held: New Years Eve. As tradition prescribes, the residents and guests visits their neighbours, the Russian Embassy. Here, everybody (attempts) to sing the Russian National Anthem, and the Russians reciprocate with vodka and snacks.

In general, the dormitory has a lot of parties throughout the year. Common between all of them is that the residents always party and dance until dawn.

Study hall with a view

As a resident at GAHK you are assigned a room with your own washbasin and built in closets. Some rooms are larger than others, and include a bed loft or a balcony.

All rooms have their own charm, and since there are options to change room residents move out, it is often that a resident manages to live in several different rooms during their stay at GAHK.

The residents are allocated between 5 floors. At each floor there is a shared bathroom and toilet. There is also a small kitchenette where board games, coffee, and wine are enjoyed. At the top of the building – right under the roof – there’s a study hall, with an amazing view over Copenhagen.

GAHK also houses a great banquet hall above the dining hall. On many evenings the residents gather for a movie, or the latest episode of Paradise Hotel, in the home theater.

Are you interested in living at G. A. Hagemanns Kollegium?

In order to apply you must have completed an equivalence of two years of studies at a long, higher education, and must be Danish-speaking.

The first thing to do in the application process is to visit the GAHK website, where the application process is outlined.

Here you will get the chance to see the place and maybe meet some the residents. In case you are still interested after the guided tour, you will be given the application scheme and you’ll be explained the further application process. We admit new residents continuously. Maybe you are the next one?

Until then you can get a guided tour of the dorm via the University Post photo reporter Ane Terp Rasmussen. I applied for housing at the same time that I applied for the University of Copenhagen.

Not being that young anymore, being used to liveing by myself for more than 10 years, and having some OCD, I knew I wouldn't be able to share a bedroom or a bathroom, so I applied to residences with private bathrooms only.

It reduced my chances of getting an offer, so when I finally got one just a week before I was getting inside an aeroplane, I was relieved above everything.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

Large, furnished rooms

I live in the former Keops Kollegiet, now called Bispebjerg Kollegiet.

The residence is in fact two twin buildings of 252 rooms in total. Most of the residents are Danish and a smaller amount (70) is dedicated to international students through the International Office or DIS.

Read also: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

All the rooms are the same. They are private apartments of around 20m² with their own (pretty big) bathroom and a little kitchen. There is basic furniture so the room is ready for occupation, but you may need or want to add your own stuff too.

Far away but with close transportation

One of the walls is a big window, which makes the room very light. I live on the fifth floor and even if my window is on the road, I enjoy the view of the park across it and the Grundtvig Church in the background. You can open a door in the window and you can take a small step outside, but that's basically that, so calling it a balcony may be a bit over the top.

At first, I thought it was a bit far from KUA, but come on, this is Copenhagen! The dormitory has the 6A bus and the Bispebjerg station at its feet. It makes everything convenient and easy to reach - 15 minutes and you can be downtown.

I personally think this dormitory is extremely well-located, with the transports options, two supermarkets less than 2 minutes (by foot) away and the Nørrebro Bycenter (mall) around the corner. You just have to go a bit further if you want to enjoy the Nørrebro nightlife, but then you'll have plenty of choices.

Big terrace

What strikes you about Bispebjerg Kollegiet when you arrive is the original architecture.

The floors are designed in a U-shape and all the hallways are exterior. Each building has three suspended rooms - the common rooms (including a kitchen and a study room).

I enjoyed the big terrace on the top of the kitchen this summer, but I personally don't use the common rooms, unless a party is organized in the kitchen for the whole dormitory.

No "family atmosphere"

But this is the bad side of the dormitory. We all have our own private apartments with everything we need, so we rarely meet each other. You have to like being by yourself to enjoy living here, because you won't find a "family-like" atmosphere.

Read also: Copenhagen dorms which need a motivated application letter

Still, there is a food-club, a party-committee and a Facebook group where improvised activities are announced.

I regret that there isn't more social life at Bispebjerg Kollegiet, due to a lack of cosy and furnished commons rooms in my opinion. No library, no nicely furnished study room and no gym like in other student housing. Only these pretty empty hanging boxes. On the other hand, you get the quiet time you need to sleep or study.

Wants more friends at dorm

Coming from Paris, where life is very expensive, I don't feel it as much as other foreigners, but the rent is pretty expensive too (basic rent is 3667 DKK).

Still, I like living here because I really like having everything I need in a short walking distance, with a green area across the street. It's nice to have a walk to Grundtvig's Church, which takes you to a completely different place.

Studying at KUA and having dancing lessons in Bellahøj and at Vesterbros Torv, I use most of the transport facilities. I feel lucky to not live on campus, so I can live a "real" Danish life in another part of the city. I still hope I will befriend more of my neighbors in the next months though. Any case, I will definitely remember my time here as a great one.

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Review: Bispebjerg Kollegiet
Sigrid knew she wouldn't be able to share a bedroom or a bathroom, so she applied to student kollegiums with private bathrooms only.
