One of the hardest words for an international student to learn and awkwardly pronounce when a new Danish friend asks, “So, where do you live?”

When moving to Denmark for my Master’s, I had already experienced “residence life” in my first year of university back at home in Canada. So naturally, I was intrigued to see the similarities and differences in residence life in Copenhagen, Denmark.

And first off I can say, it is not referred to as residence life here in Denmark,
it is ‘kollegium’ life.

SEE THE FULL ‘DORMS DISCLOSED’ UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

Ikea on request

My one year and eight months of living in HVK has been divided between two rooms; a so-called international room and a Danish room. The difference? Absolutely nothing.

Each room is a Scandinavian-ly, white-walled, 10 square meter room equipped with an entrance way that includes a built in wardrobe and sink area. All international rooms are Ikea furnished (bed, desk, bookshelf, night table, lamp), however in the Danish rooms, furnishing is available upon request, which is the route I chose to take.

The rooms are small and cozy but still with enough space to dance like nobody is watching or house a visitor or two from back home. And hey, if you want to learn a new language or discover new music, you can simply open your window and take in all the sounds from the surrounding rooms. Once the windows are open, privacy is lost.

Sharing is nice

Each floor consists of 22 rooms, 2 kitchens, and 2 bathroom areas (3 showers and 3 toilets in total). Coming from a family of four girls, sharing kitchens and bathrooms hasn’t been much of a problem to me.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.

We have the luxury of a cleaning lady who keeps the bathrooms nice and tidy. But for the kitchens, we have to get down and dirty as the neatness of the kitchens are the floor’s own responsibility.

As for other common areas, the basement is one big common area, divided into 5 rooms that contain things such as a 52 inch TV, couches, ping-pong table, football, pool table, workout equipment, and most importantly, a party room with a bar. This space all opens up to a medium-sized yard where you can relax and enjoy the sun (when it makes an appearance!) on the grass or picnic tables, or you can enjoy a BBQ with your floor-mates.

Far from the city

HVK is tucked away in Copenhagen NW just next to the A-line station stop, Emdrup station. The surrounding area is mainly residential housing with a few small supermarkets and a Fitness World within walking distance.

Also just up the road, there is a pond with a path, perfect for evening runs or romantic walks. With only a 5.5 km bike ride to Nørreport station, being a part of city life is accessible, but at times it can feel a bit removed. However, for those going to school at University of Copenhagen’s North Campus (like myself), a 7 minute bike ride down one road makes it quick and easy to get to early morning lectures.

Family time

One of the best things about living at HVK is the “family-like” atmosphere. Being in student housing of a smaller size (100 residents) and sharing everything but sheets, the social scene at HVK is very ‘hyggelig’.

Each floor is a mini-family, filled with meal clubs, movie nights, kitchen parties and growing friendships. When the whole building gets together for different activities (always including drinking of course – even at the General Assembly) it is like having a big family reunion.

There is a lot of tradition in the building and as Danish culture goes, it is of course found in local party rituals. And what are they like? In one word: Drunk. For some reason, parties here are never without a theme. Personally, I love it! It makes things that much more enjoyable to watch guys prance around in dresses, or a male burlesque dancer spanking a dominatrix.

Party time

When living at HVK, I have had the opportunity to take part in many different parties including Tour de Cuisine, Tour de Mose, Half-Year parties, Thursday cafes and last but not least, the 36 hour bar, where the floor that drinks the most amount of beer wins a trophy. There is much more than drinking cheaply priced beers (3 for 20kr!!), this is when the spirit of ‘kollegium’ is most alive.

At some parties, dinner is cooked by one of the floors and served to the whole residence hall and at others, there is healthy competition between the floors with a soccer tournament (football for you Europeans) and of course, drinking games.

The people

Meeting people in the building is fairly easy, once again, because everything is shared. However, a bit of ‘outgoing-ness’ can go a long way. It is a fairly even mix of guys and girls, but the international-to-Danish ratio is a bit skewed at 25 pct. international to 75 pct. Danish. For internationals, this is a very nice way to experience Danish culture when moving to a new country. However, in the beginning, it can feel a bit intimidating when breaking into the floor.

The people living here range from 18 to 27, studying things from Educational Sciences to English Literature. Those living in Danish rooms can live here as long as they want to as long as they are studying. For those in international rooms, it is only allowed to live here for a year. However, depending on how involved you are in the building, it is possible to later end up in a Danish room, just as I have.

All-in-all, I have loved my time here at HVK. I have made many new friends from many different cultural backgrounds and it is going to be hard to leave my HVK family.

[If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it ‘Dorms Disclosed’]

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Living at Håndværkerkollegiet is family-like.

[This guide has been continually updated since it was first published in 2014. You don’t live in the old monks' cells however, as after 276 years, after the old monastery had survived incoming incendiaries from the Napoleonic Wars and the Great Copenhagen Fire, a new and more modern brick building was erected.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

Valkendorfians live in something resembling a larger manor house, and even though the kitchens are a bit small, the residents don’t suffer. The story of this ancient residence is being proudly presented by Ditte S. Jelsbak-Rasmussen, who has lived in the dormitory for two years and studies history.

Secret rent and obligating community

At Valkendorfs Kollegium, you call yourself an 'alumni' even while you live there. 22 students do. Three of them live with their boyfriends/girlfriends, who are allowed to move in as a so-called 'gris [=pig, ed.]'. The word is a modification of a word meaning 'gratist’, or free rider, but it has never been free to live there, not even for lovers. As a ‘gris’, you did not have the same rights for many years as the ordinary residents. But today there is almost no difference, according to Ditte S. Jelsbak-Rasmussen.

The rent is a secret, but »it is not high« Ditte S. Jelsdbak-Rasmussen assures me. But you are expected to spend a lot of time in the dormitory. »It is not just a room you rent,« says Ditte S. Jelsbak-Rasmussen.

The rent is kept a secret because the residence hall does not want to compete on price. Future residents should not be attracted by low rent, but by a desire to commit to student life.

You feel that you become part of something bigger when you move in.

Ditte S. Jelsbak-Rasmussen, alumna

There is a food club twice a week for the whole of the dormitory, and more spontaneous food clubs emerge during the week in each of the corridors which house between three and nine alumni.

In addition to the traditional mushroom-picking tour, which the alumni do every year, as well as various large parties, there is also a shared responsibility for keeping the residence hall running in the best way possible. Responsibility is apportioned according to specific roles, where some people are responsible for the house's finances, the gardens, or for external communication, while others make sure that the dormitory looks nice and homely.

The old building from the 19th century is beautiful, both from the outside and from the inside. The kitchens are small and cosy and may be a little cramped if all eight people have to cook at the same time, which is why it is normal to take turns to cook for the entire corridor.

From house meeting to chicken coop

It is the residents themselves who make decisions on what it should be like living together, and every month a house meeting is held for the whole of the dormitory. Here, the residents talk about this and that, and discuss proposals for new dormitory procedures.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

This is a review by a student reporter. A resident gave a presentation on why this would be a good idea, and after the chicken coop was voted through, a small chicken coop guild was set up among residents to be responsible for their care. Over the course of a weekend, the chicken coop guild had built their chicken coop, and so now a brood of hens shuffle around the front garden of the dormitory.

Ditte S. Jelsbak-Rasmussen warmly recommends applying for the dormitory.

»You feel you are a part of something bigger when you move in. One of the best things I've done for myself is to apply here, « she says.

The places at the old residence hall are distributed in a way so that each faculty of the University of Copenhagen is represented. You must be a student at the University of Copenhagen and have been studying for at least one and a half years (that is, have earned 90 ECTS credits).

You are allowed to live in the dormitory for five years, and most residents live there for the whole period.

[This review has been written by a student reporter at the University Post. If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it 'Dorms Disclosed']

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Review: Valkendorfs Kollegium has a garden in the city. Remember to send a motivation letter to the admissions committee – they can put you on the queue if they like what they read.

Review: Bikuben — the quirky beehive
The Bikuben [beehive] residence hall in the Amager-district of Copenhagen is known for its remarkable architecture and its trash collecting.
Vagn Greve, the former dean of the Faculty of Law at University of Copenhagen initially had the idea to build Collegium Juris in 2003 when he started fundraising for the project.

The collegium opened its doors in September 2012 where 50 young residents moved in. The building has been completely renovated, which means all interior is brand new and (almost still) shiny, however the exterior has been kept beautifully antique. The interior architecture and design is quite extraordinary and very modern which is a perfect contrast to the exterior of the dorm. Bamboo is for example a main material used several places in the common areas and the student rooms, all around you’ll find lots of bright and colourful furniture, and each common area is closed off by big glass doors with colourful writing.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

The collegium is situated in the heart of Nørrebro with Sankt Hans Torv in its backyard.

Suits and stilettoes...

… are not the everyday uniform. Collegium Juris is a place where controversial clichés about law students can be put to bed – and where there is enough room for the residents to represent whichever personality, interests and field of study they have ambitions to pursue.

The collegium houses a majority of law students – however, almost every one of them has quite different interests within the field which makes the dorm academically vigorous. It is however a board requirement that a minimum of 10 non-law students are represented within the dorm.

The Law students particularly benefit from constructive feedback from each other especially during exam periods. Non-law students on the other hand seem to benefit by always having someone to help out if there’s a need for legal advice – and isn’t there always a need for legal advice? So far the combination has worked out phenomenally.

“Parlez-you-Dansk”?

Cross-cultural understanding is a keyword for life at the collegium. No less than 40% of the residents are international and all Danish residents must have some kind of international background.

International residents either study for one or two semesters as part of a normal exchange program, are enrolled in 1 or 2-year LL.M.-programs or work as ph.d. students.

Particularly this part of the collegium is what makes for a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere. Each semester we say our farewells and welcome new nationalities. Even though the collegium is still brand new, it has already become a tradition to send our old residents home and welcome new residents, Danish as well as international, with a gathering for their floor – mostly including coffee and cake or dinner and drinks.

Collegium Juris is in many ways a vivacious collegium, but it is by far the international feeling between residents that especially creates the pulsating life. I mean who doesn't love the combination of an Australian surfer dude serenading the hall on his guitar, a Japanese girl making homemade sushi from her mothers recipe for Sunday dinner, an Ethiopian who always brings back Ethiopian coffee from his trips back home, a
spontaneous Summer October Fest to celebrate our German residents, topped of with a Danish resident cooking a traditional dinner of ''stegt flæst med persillesovs''?

Beers and briefcases

It is no secret that you’ll find very ambitious people residing in Collegium Juris. However, this is a place where everyone works hard to play hard!

All the residents are very social and always up for a good time. The basement in the building doesn't just work as our study library but also provides huge common rooms where it’s hard not to play beer pong and beer football. Each month the floors take turns as to host themed Friday Bars, which are always a great success, and the themes and preparations get better each time.

Most floors also gather for a common Sunday dinner which residents take turn in preparing. It's the definition of family time for everyone. Often the kitchen afterwards becomes a cinema and you’ll find a room full of residents cuddling in fatboys with their dunas eating cookies and popcorn. It’s always a great way to end a busy week.

A Tour de Cuisine is also arranged once a year where each floor is in charge of serving a meal, drinks and preparing games, which normally evolves around a theme – it's Tour de Chambre (which is of course also held each semester) taken to another level.

Rome wasn’t built in a day

The premises are brand new, most residents have no dormitory-experience, and the possibilities are indeed endless.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

Where to begin and where to end is never the question here. It’s all about starting and never quite finishing because there is always room for improvement and new additions. The possibilities in being a part of and building the traditions of a new collegium are only limited by your own imagination. There is always room for new ideas – and one of these came to life in April 2014 when we had our first ever Annual Party. The collegium was gathered for a magical night of reminiscing on the becoming of Collegium Juris and the great collegium it has already developed to be.

In August 2014 we gathered two groups of residents who ran the DHL relay, and most recently we celebrated Collegium Juris' second birthday.

In the years to come our current and future residents will form the traditions of the collegium. There is a certain fascination in taking part in the making of collegium history.

Just can’t get enough?

If you are interested in applying for a room at Collegium Juris or would like to know more please do not hesitate to visit the Collegium Juris website and/or ''like'' our Collegium Juris Facebook page.

Review: Collegium Juris
It is a dorm almost exclusively for law students.
