It looks timeless, and the old intercom system at the front door has been preserved, even though it is no longer in use. This relic is a testament to the history of the place, as are the dorm’s numerous traditions.

One of these traditions is the way the residents eat together. It is built into the architecture, in the form of a professional kitchen and a dining hall in the middle of the dorm. Every day of the week, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served here – all prepared by the dorm’s two chefs and kitchen assistant.

Daniel Hjorth Lund says, with a twinkle in his eye, that the students of the Nordisk Kollegium may be the worst cooks in Copenhagen, because they never have any reason to prepare food for themselves.

This dining arrangement means that the large dining hall is a place where all the dorm residents meet up on a daily basis. Between the pillars, they sit at long tables and eat with the others who live on the same corridor. Dinner is served at six in the evening every day. In the morning, it is traditional to sit with people from other corridors.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

This is a review by a student reporter. But in the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.

And then there is the cunning rule that prohibits mobile phone use in the dining hall; this means the residents are forced to get to know each other, says Daniel Hjorth Lund.

He likes to sit at the breakfast table from six to nine in the morning to read (the printed) newspaper and chat with his fellow residents, if he has nothing else scheduled. The college receives two national newspapers – Politiken and Information – and some residents prefer to eat breakfast alone, with the newspaper for company.

After breakfast you can make your own packed lunch, and there are always leftovers from dinner or a pasta salad to supplement your sandwich.

When the dining room is not being used for breakfast and dinner, it is a reading room for residents who prefer to consume their texts and packed lunch at home than elsewhere. It is frequently used, not least because there is always a pot of hot coffee available, says Daniel Hjorth Lund.

Your imagination sets the limits

In addition to the meals, parties and annual traditions are what bind the dorm together, says Daniel Hjorth Lund.

The entire month of October is set aside for a number of competitions at the legendary NOKO open, which is the Nordisk Kollegium’s open tournament. »It is only your imagination that sets the limits for what you can compete in here,« says Daniel Hjorth Lund, and proceeds to list disciplines that are guaranteed never to make the Olympic Games: Rum Truffle Eating, Apple Throwing, Listening to Medina (a Danish pop singer, ed.), and the Great Heads or Tails Tournament. And there are many more, he explains.

At Christmas time, a huge Christmas tree adorns the dining room, and it is decorated on the annual Christmas crafts day, as residents drink mulled wine and eat the traditional Danish Christmas treat <secret text="Balls of pancake dough eaten with jam and icing sugar.">æbleskiver</secret>.

On the Danish national holiday Store Bededag, the dorm residents wear their student caps for a tug-of-war with G.A. Hagemanns Kollegium at the Kastellet Citadel Church. The competition ends cordially, with the two dorms eating <secret text="Warm wheat buns that are traditionally eaten on Store Bededag day.">hveder</secret> together and then having a party.

Plenum, Fireplace Emperors and the Squeegee Master

Twice a year, there is a big meeting for the entire dorm known as Plenum. Here, all the residents are invited to review the agenda and vote in elections for the 30-50 committees and posts in the dorm. »We have so many committees that I can’t remember them all,« says Daniel Hjorth Lund. Those he can remember are the Cheese Committee, the Farm Committee and the cultural committee Faust, which invites residents to cultural events such as the theatre or opera.

»We also have a Dog and Horse Racing Committee. The Plenum meeting is a long-winded affair! It usually lasts from 19:30 to the early hours of the morning. Participants usually consume a few beers during the course of the evening… and the ideas that we dream up late at night may not be our best ones. But we did end up going to see some horse racing in Charlottenlund.«

All the residents have one of the many positions of responsibility. If you are responsible for a specific area, you will be called a ‘master’ and among these titles you will find a Bicycle Master, Sewing Machine Master, Fireplace Emperor, King Frost, Squeegee Master, Flag Master, and so on.

Treasures in the hallways and memorials on the doors

In most of the corridors, there are 12 residents who all share a kitchen. Although food clubs are rare, due to the advantageous common dining arrangements, residents of the same corridor tend to form close-knit groups. They knock on each other’s doors when they go down to dinner, and hold a monthly meeting to discuss good ideas and deal with everyday frictions. They also discus what the corridor tax should be spent on. All residents pay between DKK 10 and 30 a month for joint purchases if the hallway is missing something – this could, for example, be a new frying pan for the eggs that they do actually fry once in a while.

Up on the fifth floor, the average seniority is a little higher than in the rest of the dormitory, as the residents who have lived in the dorm the longest are at the front of the queue to pick which room they want. Here, there are fewer residents on each corridor, they have a larger kitchen, and even a roof terrace to frolic on. The two roof terraces are open to everyone, but it is mostly the fourth and fifth floor residents who use them. This is where Daniel Hjorth Lund lives.

All rooms have their own toilet and shower. The outside of the doors are adorned with newspaper clippings chosen by fellow corridor resident to reflect the personality of the room’s inhabitant. On the inside of the doors are the nameplates of all previous residents, from the dorm’s defunct door intercom. Thus, the doors also serve as memorial plaques for all the earlier inhabitants of a dorm room.

If you have been tempted by the functionalist architecture, the potential to become a master of something obscure, and if you don’t care about the deterioration of your cooking skills, then keep your eyes peeled for the next time the college opens for applications. This happens four times a year, »and the vast majority have applied more than once. And we prefer that you have taken part in a tour first, so you are familiar with what we prioritise as a dorm,« says Daniel Hjorth Lund.

[This review has been written by a student reporter at the University Post. It usually lasts from 19:30 to the early hours of the morning.

The building has been completely renovated, which means all interior is brand new and (almost still) shiny, however the exterior has been kept beautifully antique. The interior architecture and design is quite extraordinary and very modern which is a perfect contrast to the exterior of the dorm. Bamboo is for example a main material used several places in the common areas and the student rooms, all around you’ll find lots of bright and colourful furniture, and each common area is closed off by big glass doors with colourful writing.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

The collegium is situated in the heart of Nørrebro with Sankt Hans Torv in its backyard.

Suits and stilettoes...

… are not the everyday uniform. Collegium Juris is a place where controversial clichés about law students can be put to bed – and where there is enough room for the residents to represent whichever personality, interests and field of study they have ambitions to pursue.

The collegium houses a majority of law students – however, almost every one of them has quite different interests within the field which makes the dorm academically vigorous. It is however a board requirement that a minimum of 10 non-law students are represented within the dorm.

The Law students particularly benefit from constructive feedback from each other especially during exam periods. Non-law students on the other hand seem to benefit by always having someone to help out if there’s a need for legal advice – and isn’t there always a need for legal advice? So far the combination has worked out phenomenally.

“Parlez-you-Dansk”?

Cross-cultural understanding is a keyword for life at the collegium. No less than 40% of the residents are international and all Danish residents must have some kind of international background.

International residents either study for one or two semesters as part of a normal exchange program, are enrolled in 1 or 2-year LL.M.-programs or work as ph.d. students.

Particularly this part of the collegium is what makes for a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere. Each semester we say our farewells and welcome new nationalities. Even though the collegium is still brand new, it has already become a tradition to send our old residents home and welcome new residents, Danish as well as international, with a gathering for their floor – mostly including coffee and cake or dinner and drinks.

Collegium Juris is in many ways a vivacious collegium, but it is by far the international feeling between residents that especially creates the pulsating life. I mean who doesn't love the combination of an Australian surfer dude serenading the hall on his guitar, a Japanese girl making homemade sushi from her mothers recipe for Sunday dinner, an Ethiopian who always brings back Ethiopian coffee from his trips back home, a
spontaneous Summer October Fest to celebrate our German residents, topped of with a Danish resident cooking a traditional dinner of ''stegt flæst med persillesovs''?

Beers and briefcases

It is no secret that you’ll find very ambitious people residing in Collegium Juris. However, this is a place where everyone works hard to play hard!

All the residents are very social and always up for a good time. The basement in the building doesn't just work as our study library but also provides huge common rooms where it’s hard not to play beer pong and beer football. Each month the floors take turns as to host themed Friday Bars, which are always a great success, and the themes and preparations get better each time.

Most floors also gather for a common Sunday dinner which residents take turn in preparing. It's the definition of family time for everyone. Often the kitchen afterwards becomes a cinema and you’ll find a room full of residents cuddling in fatboys with their dunas eating cookies and popcorn. It’s always a great way to end a busy week.

A Tour de Cuisine is also arranged once a year where each floor is in charge of serving a meal, drinks and preparing games, which normally evolves around a theme – it's Tour de Chambre (which is of course also held each semester) taken to another level.

Rome wasn’t built in a day

The premises are brand new, most residents have no dormitory-experience, and the possibilities are indeed endless.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

Where to begin and where to end is never the question here. It’s all about starting and never quite finishing because there is always room for improvement and new additions. The possibilities in being a part of and building the traditions of a new collegium are only limited by your own imagination. There is always room for new ideas – and one of these came to life in April 2014 when we had our first ever Annual Party. The collegium was gathered for a magical night of reminiscing on the becoming of Collegium Juris and the great collegium it has already developed to be.

In August 2014 we gathered two groups of residents who ran the DHL relay, and most recently we celebrated Collegium Juris' second birthday.

In the years to come our current and future residents will form the traditions of the collegium. There is a certain fascination in taking part in the making of collegium history.

Just can’t get enough?

If you are interested in applying for a room at Collegium Juris or would like to know more please do not hesitate to visit the Collegium Juris website and/or ''like'' our Collegium Juris Facebook page.

Review: Collegium Juris
It is a dorm almost exclusively for law students. Maj Kollegiet has another dormitory within it, namely the tiny Hassagers Kollegium, which is home to 10 students. Hassagers Kollegium, which pre-dates 4. Maj Kollegiet, was founded by Dorothea Hassager. Here, the entry requirements are a little different. Unlike the 4. Maj Kollegiet, which is open to all students, Hessagers Kollegium is only open to students who have completed 120 ECTS credits at the University of Copenhagen.

The residents share common areas with those from 4. Maj Kollegiet, and they help to preserve the traditions of the dorms.

4. Maj Kollegiet »the most Danish dorm,« but also emphasises that both dorms try to be as inclusive as possible.

Holger Wilhelm Ilsøe, who lives in 4. Maj Kollegiet, agrees.

»We all share the common background that our grandparents were active during the resistance struggle,« he says. »History is tangible here.«

Therefore, the most important moment of the year is May 4th at 20:36, when everyone stops whatever they are doing to listen to the message of freedom from 1945. This happens during the annual May 4th party, which residents spend at least a week planning each year.

»The day is steeped in tradition,« says Holger Wilhelm Ilsøe. In the morning, the residents hoist the Danish flag, Dannebrog, and eat breakfast together, and in the evening, candles are lit around the entire building. Then there is a gala dinner with a three-course menu, which is thoroughly tested at rehearsal dinners several days in advance.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

Reading room, »if you like that sort of thing«

During the year, the building’s 'birthday' is celebrated on September 18th, and residents at Hassagers Kollegium keep up the tradition of baking copious amounts of cake to mark Dorothea Hassager's birthday on September 25th.

»We prioritise traditions quite a lot,« says May Ling Foo from Hassagers Kollegium, but she also says that it is not the type of place where there is a party every weekend.

»I feel there is room for everyone here.«

»We also want to exemplify the ideals of the resistance struggle. For example, we do not want to discriminate,« adds Holger Wilhelm Ilsøe. »So we make a lot of effort to include as broad a range of the population as possible, in terms of education and social background.«

Therefore, the dormitory has a requirement for equal gender distribution, and the application process focuses on ensuring that residents come from different parts of Denmark. The dorm is also open to students from all educational programmes.

For DKK 2,375 a month, the residents get access to a shared kitchen, toilet, and bathroom as well as a balcony with a view of what May Ling Foo calls, »Copenhagen's most beautiful garden.«

»We also have a reading room, if you like that sort of thing,« adds Holger Wilhelm Ilsøe with a smile.

[This review has been written by a student reporter at the University Post. I might also have used the word ‘ugly’ as a descriptive – and there is no doubt that the exterior of Bikuben Kollegiet (the 'Beehive') is unusual. Sitting between the old 19th century blocks of Amagerbro and the sandy-coloured university complex, Bikuben Kollegiet definitely stands out.

The University Post has reviewed the Bikuben dorm a second time. Read the later review here.

Brown, orange and concrete

The building was completed in 2006 which means that the dorm offers all the amenities a student can hope for. There is a fitness room, party hall, lounge, study room and several outdoor terraces. The topmost terrace is on the sixth floor and offers a great view over Copenhagen and Amager – perfect for New Year’s Eve parties and summer night barbeques.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

There are six floors, and each is a little different. However the student rooms are much the same. Each person gets a bathroom and a kitchenette, and the room itself is spacious and white. Concrete is an integral part of the building’s design which means that the ceilings in the rooms are made of this material, and that most rooms have a wall which is partly made of concrete.

The design of the common areas is dominated by browns and oranges. This design decision is often frowned upon by the inhabitants who find it a bit odd that anybody would choose these 1970's colors to match the dorm's expensive and modern furniture. Thankfully, the common kitchens are a neutral white, and – as anybody who has ever lived in an old Copenhagen apartment will be able to appreciate – there are dishwashers!

Halloween, Christmas and social life

Like the architecture, the social life on each floor is different. The most accurate description would be that it is what you make of it. Bikuben Kollegiet has its private Facebook group where people often post if they are having a kitchen party or if they are showing a movie in the lounge. Usually everybody is invited, and it is always a pleasure when a new face shows up.

If you want a social dorm life it is a great idea to join one of Bikuben’s many committees. My recommendation would be the Party Committee as they get together regularly to organize Bikuben’s parties.

Last semester Bikuben had two official parties: The Halloween Party and the Christmas Lunch. Both were preceded by pre-parties: The Pumpkin Party where we carved pumpkins for Halloween decorations, and the Christmas Decoration party where the Baking Committee served cakes and everybody folded Christmas hearts and Christmas stars.

Life on the 4th floor

My floor is one of the most social in the dorm. Most of the time you’ll find people hanging out in the kitchens and the common rooms, and we regularly organize events as well as consume a lot of boxed wine. This means that we have what we call "Red Wine Friday", which does not necessarily have to be on a Friday.

Sometimes we celebrate Red Wine Friday three times a week. On our floor, most days of the week are connected with a particular kind of alcohol: Cocktail Monday, Tequila Tuesday, Vodka Saturday and so on. We did however deem it necessary to develop Abstinence Wednesday too.

Each Monday we have the official dinner club where the residents of the fourth floor cook for each other. Often many impromptu dinners happen too as a lot of the residents like to cook and make use of the opportunity to get many people together in order to be able to afford an excellent dinner on a student budget.

A modern home

While the beauty of Bikuben Kollegiet can be discussed, there is no doubt that it is a great luxury to live in a modern building. While the old Copenhagen apartments are charming, you can’t help but appreciate the fact that an elevator takes you to your floor, that a dishwasher is right at hand or that the building is isolated so well that you hardly ever hear your neighbours.

And in the dark winter evenings when you see, not the orange and the gray colors, but the welcoming irregular squares of light shining from the box, Bikuben is an especially nice place to call home.

[This review has been written by a student reporter at the University Post. If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it 'Dorms Disclosed']

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Review: Bikuben Kollegiet (first review)
Some may call Bikuben Kollegiet ugly, but underneath the 70s-style colour palette you find ultra modern facilities and in the summer there are rooftop parties
["GET
