At Frankrigsgade 50 in Copenhagen you\u2019ll find a 9 floor dormitory called \u201dThe Frank\u201d, with 14 people living on each floor. The address is on Amager, which you may have heard about, and what you may have heard might have been bad.<\/p>\n

However, The Frank is on the good side: It is near Amagerbro metro station, just 6 minutes from N\u00f8rreport, convenient to the metro and several bus opportunities. Step on, for example 5A and 2A, and you have reached City Center before you’ve found a seat.<\/p>\n

Shopping in the area is not scarce! – you find are all kinds of supermarkets in the area, and Amagercentret, a shopping center, is just a five minute walk away. On top of the closest supermarket – which is across the street – you find a Fitness World and the beach is 10 minutes away. So there is no excuse not for not staying fit in The Frank. And with Amagerbrogade and its’ wide selection of caf\u00e9s, restaurants and pubs\/bars no more than 10 minutes away, being close to the gym is a good thing. The area of The Frank is in general abundant with stuff to do and places to go. And more importantly, it is really easy and cheap to get home from a night out.<\/p>\n

The social facilities<\/h2>\n

Other than housing our 126 mailboxes, the ground floor is the place to go for a game of foosball or table tennis. There are two gardens, a small and a bigger garden. In these you can grill, have a beer etc. and as a new thing we started a Pool Party tradition last summer. Inside you\u2019ll find our Party Room, for which the Party Comitee plans around five bashes each year. Two of them are yearly; Tour De Cuisine in January\/February and the Drink-all-you-can in June\/July. These are two parties you don\u2019t wanna miss! The parties are for everyone who lives at the dormitory so this is a great opportunity to meet people from other floors. You can also rent the Party Room and throw a party of your own.<\/p>\n

Another tradition we have is Tour de Amager, where we dress up like typical Amager people and go for a pub-crawl at the pubs and bars in the area. This is usually a lot of fun because the local people are either very fun to talk to or get really annoyed by us being there (most of them are there every night).<\/p>\n

We also have a Facebook group, where we tell each other about stuff that’s going on at The Frank. This could be a movie on the big screen in the Party Room, an invite to tequila night on the 2nd floor or a love party on the 7th floor. Basically, it can be anything.<\/p>\n

The facilities on each floor<\/h2>\n

You can get to floor 1-9 by using the elevator or the stairs. When you leave the elevator there is a long hallway with 14 rooms. At the end of the hallway when you walked past the washing and the drying machine, you\u2019ll find the shared areas, such as the kitchen and the dining room.<\/p>\n

You share the kitchen with 13 other students, which can be very frustrating. Since everyone has different cleaning habits, the kitchen can become quite a pigsty. When this happens, we set up a kitchen-meeting and remind each other to be more thorough next time. This usually helps. Other than this, it is in general very cosy to be in the kitchen, which is nice and big.<\/p>\n

We also have a separate dining room, which has a wall of windows, that makes the room very light and the view is great from the higher floors. We use the dining room for a lot of occasions such as Christmas lunch (Julefrokost), floor parties, food-clubs and watching TV. We don\u2019t have a lot of channels but you can watch the main Danish channels and a few foreign channels. We also use the dining room for studying, which usually works pretty good, at least on my floor, even though you cannot expect complete silence there.<\/p>\n

Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n

In these areas it often feels like your floor-mates are your family \u2013 you may also discussed cleaning-stuff with your folks when you lived at home, so don\u2019t worry: that earlier mentioned problem isn\u2019t big and we really don\u2019t argue a lot. We just solve the daily life problems by staying calm and polite. While you live on one of the floors at The Frank, you talk with many of your floor-mates daily, so you can become very close.<\/p>\n

The rooms<\/h2>\n

When you step into a room there is a tiny hallway with build-in closets. If you continue forward you\u2019ll step into a unfurnished room which is 14 m2. The room has a big window, that\u2019s basically one of the walls of the room. This makes the room very light and it\u2019s possible to open the window so you can step outside on a narrow, but long balcony. The view is either to the City Center or to \u00d8resund and Malm\u00f8. Each room comes with a decent bathroom with a quite big shower area. In total the room is 20 m2.<\/p>\n

All the things you need to use, such as water, electricity, TV, Internet and the washing machine, are included in the rent.<\/p>\n

The Frank’s people<\/h2>\n

You will meet a lot of different people at The Frank and it is very different what people study. On one floor you can find students from CBS, from KUA, law students, medicine students and many others. People from any kind of higher education can apply.<\/p>\n

Most of the people are very nice and open-minded, so you\u2019ll always have someone to talk to \u2013 both while cooking and while partying. It can be difficult to meet people from other floors than your own if you don\u2019t attend the social events that is for everyone on all floors. If you do, then it\u2019s on and you will have so much fun!<\/p>\n

That is what The Frank is like. A lot of fun and a great place to live.<\/p>\n

A lot of fun and a great place to live. The address is on Amager, which you may have heard about, and what you may have heard might have been bad.<\/p>\n<p>However, The Frank is on the good side: It is near Amagerbro metro station, just 6 minutes from N\u00f8rreport, convenient to the metro and several bus opportunities. Step on, for example 5A and 2A, and you have reached City Center before you’ve found a seat.<\/p>\n<p>Shopping in the area is not scarce! – you find are all kinds of supermarkets in the area, and Amagercentret, a shopping center, is just a five minute walk away. On top of the closest supermarket – which is across the street – you find a Fitness World and the beach is 10 minutes away. So there is no excuse not for not staying fit in The Frank. And with Amagerbrogade and its’ wide selection of caf\u00e9s, restaurants and pubs\/bars no more than 10 minutes away, being close to the gym is a good thing. The area of The Frank is in general abundant with stuff to do and places to go. And more importantly, it is really easy and cheap to get home from a night out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE THE FULL ‘DORMS DISCLOSED’ UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>The social facilities<\/h2>\n<p>Other than housing our 126 mailboxes, the ground floor is the place to go for a game of foosball or table tennis. There are two gardens, a small and a bigger garden. In these you can grill, have a beer etc. and as a new thing we started a Pool Party tradition last summer. Inside you\u2019ll find our Party Room, for which the Party Comitee plans around five bashes each year. Two of them are yearly; Tour De Cuisine in January\/February and the Drink-all-you-can in June\/July. These are two parties you don\u2019t wanna miss! The parties are for everyone who lives at the dormitory so this is a great opportunity to meet people from other floors. You can also rent the Party Room and throw a party of your own.<\/p>\n<p>Another tradition we have is Tour de Amager, where we dress up like typical Amager people and go for a pub-crawl at the pubs and bars in the area. This is usually a lot of fun because the local people are either very fun to talk to or get really annoyed by us being there (most of them are there every night).<\/p>\n<p>We also have a Facebook group, where we tell each other about stuff that’s going on at The Frank. This could be a movie on the big screen in the Party Room, an invite to tequila night on the 2nd floor or a love party on the 7th floor. Basically, it can be anything.<\/p>\n<h2>The facilities on each floor<\/h2>\n<p>You can get to floor 1-9 by using the elevator or the stairs. When you leave the elevator there is a long hallway with 14 rooms. At the end of the hallway when you walked past the washing and the drying machine, you\u2019ll find the shared areas, such as the kitchen and the dining room.<\/p>\n<p>You share the kitchen with 13 other students, which can be very frustrating. Since everyone has different cleaning habits, the kitchen can become quite a pigsty. When this happens, we set up a kitchen-meeting and remind each other to be more thorough next time. This usually helps. Other than this, it is in general very cosy to be in the kitchen, which is nice and big.<\/p>\n<p>We also have a separate dining room, which has a wall of windows, that makes the room very light and the view is great from the higher floors. We use the dining room for a lot of occasions such as Christmas lunch (Julefrokost), floor parties, food-clubs and watching TV. We don\u2019t have a lot of channels but you can watch the main Danish channels and a few foreign channels. We also use the dining room for studying, which usually works pretty good, at least on my floor, even though you cannot expect complete silence there.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\">\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n<p>There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n<p>Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n<p>In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.<\/p>\n<p>Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews<\/a> we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In these areas it often feels like your floor-mates are your family \u2013 you may also discussed cleaning-stuff with your folks when you lived at home, so don\u2019t worry: that earlier mentioned problem isn\u2019t big and we really don\u2019t argue a lot. We just solve the daily life problems by staying calm and polite. While you live on one of the floors at The Frank, you talk with many of your floor-mates daily, so you can become very close.<\/p>\n<h2>The rooms<\/h2>\n<p>When you step into a room there is a tiny hallway with build-in closets. If you continue forward you\u2019ll step into a unfurnished room which is 14 m2. The room has a big window, that\u2019s basically one of the walls of the room. This makes the room very light and it\u2019s possible to open the window so you can step outside on a narrow, but long balcony. The view is either to the City Center or to \u00d8resund and Malm\u00f8. Each room comes with a decent bathroom with a quite big shower area. In total the room is 20 m2.<\/p>\n<p>All the things you need to use, such as water, electricity, TV, Internet and the washing machine, are included in the rent.<\/p>\n<h2>The Frank’s people<\/h2>\n<p>You will meet a lot of different people at The Frank and it is very different what people study. On one floor you can find students from CBS, from KUA, law students, medicine students and many others. People from any kind of higher education can apply.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the people are very nice and open-minded, so you\u2019ll always have someone to talk to \u2013 both while cooking and while partying. It can be difficult to meet people from other floors than your own if you don\u2019t attend the social events that is for everyone on all floors. If you do, then it\u2019s on and you will have so much fun!<\/p>\n<p>That is what The Frank is like. The rooms are between 14.6-56 m2 and have private bathrooms. The kitchen is shared. The dorm has a very modern interior and has purposely kept an antique exterior, which creates a fascinating contrast. The vibe is very international as 40 % of the students are from abroad. It is also a very social environment and is known for its common Sunday dinners and themed Friday bar nights. Hagemanns Kollegium<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nThe luxurious G. A. Hagemanns Kollegium boasts its own private chef, a grand piano, and two of J. F. Willumsen's most famous paintings. According to one of our reviewers it is something for both geeks and partygoers.\r\n\r\nThe rent may be high but it includes all your meals. In this dormitory you can get a 15-20 m2 room in a large mansion in \u00d8sterbro that you will share with 60 other residents. Common facilities are many: a large dining hall, TV-room and a study hall overlooking \u00d8resund. The rooms vary from 14-18 m2 and each comes with a private bathroom. This gives the dorm a distinctly international flavor. Rooms are between 17-26 m2 with big windows. The rooms are private and include a bathroom and a kitchenette. Each floor has a common kitchen and much of the social life centers around them as well as the roof terrace. Although they are not free, the dorm also has laundry facilities. Maj Kollegiet and Hassagers Kollegium<\/h3>\r\nThe \u20184th May dorm\u2019 was founded almost 70 years ago to house the descendants of Danish World War Two resistance members. History is tangible here, although the requirement of being related to the Danish resistance has been relaxed of late.\r\n\r\nLike a set of nesting dolls, the 4. Maj Kollegiet (see above) has another dormitory within it, namely the tiny Hassagers Kollegium, which is home to only 10 students.\r\n\r\nRead the review of\u00a0 the twin residence halls 4. Maj Kollegiet and Hassagers Kollegium \u2014 dorms within a dorm<\/a><\/strong>\r\n<h2>Inner city<\/h2>\r\n<h3><strong>Regensen<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nRegensen dates back to 1623, and about 100 students share a large, old and very beautiful building just next to Rundet\u00e5rn. Rooms vary greatly in size, from 11-25 m2, but the price remains a staggeringly low. Other than a room, you gain access to a great number of common spaces and activities: from a large ballroom to a library and study hall. The dorm has garden days, mushroom-picking trips, and a strong sense of community spirit. But the price does not reflect quality, and this dormitory is actually an old house with a beautiful garden in the heart of city center. It is all very orderly. As one resident put it: \u00bb... everyone comes from a wealthy background ... The worst I think people do is ride their bikes through red lights, if they are feeling a bit crazy\u00ab.\r\n\r\nRead the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/dorms-disclosed-borchs-a-well-behaved-dorm-for-well-to-do-students\/\">Review: Borchs \u2014 a well behaved dorm for well-to-do students<\/a><\/strong>\r\n<h3>Elers' Kollegium<\/h3>\r\n<em>Elers' Kollegium<\/em> is only for the very few. Not anyone can apply for this residence hall, which only has 20 places with several of them are earmarked for specific study programmes. But the location dorm, in old barracks, is as central in Copenhagen as it can possibly be.\r\n\r\n\u00bbThere is not even a waiting list. The building is tall, dull and without any charm. But in spite of its unwelcoming outside, once you meet all the friendly people living there it sure makes you want to stay.\r\n\r\nSocialt Kollegium is located at Amager in the area called Sundbyvester and houses 112 residents. It is a traditional Danish student housing with seven floors, which all have a shared kitchen and a common TV-room. Each floor has 16 rooms, all in the same size of 14 m2.\r\n\r\nThe rooms are light and each one has its own bathroom and a double wardrobe, which saves a lot of space from the rest of the room. That makes it a different experience to visit the various floors and makes the dorm more dynamic as a whole. Also the great mix of Danish and international students studying everything from medicine to economics make the dorm a good way to expand your knowledge of different people and different cultures.\r\n\r\nThe facilities at the dorm are great. There is a fitness room and a music room that can be used for training your biceps and for writing your next big hit. There is also a sauna, which mainly is used during the winter after rolling through the snow outside. Of more practical facilities can be mentioned the laundry room, which has brand new washing machines and best of all it is free to use.\r\n\r\nAlso to be mentioned is the different options for bike parking (either in the basement or behind locked gates), and the fast Internet, which is already included in the rent, so you do not have to pay extra for it.\r\n<h2>Be social!<\/h2>\r\nIn Socialt Kollegium there are a lot of possibilities to socialize. Besides the common room there are also a pool room and a nice and cozy cinema, where you are able to go and watch a movie with your fellow residents.\r\n\r\nFinally there is the yard. There is both a front and a backyard and during the summer the garden is the best place to be. There is lot of space, nice old trees, plenty of grass and best of; all lot of sun. There is a nice terrace and a nice barbecuing and fireplace, where the residents will spend many long summer nights hanging out, drinking beer and singing songs like old hippies.\r\n<h2>Dorm of party people<\/h2>\r\nBesides the physical settings being great for socializing, there is also an event-committee planning all sorts of events, like potlucks, movie nights, game nights and garden days.\r\n\r\nThese events make a great opportunity to meet people from all floors and to make new friends. In addition, there is also a Thursday bar hosted by a new floor every month, and every second month there is a big party, such as the annual Summer Party, an American themed party, Oktoberfest, the dorms birthday celebration and of course Tour de Cuisine, which is one of the biggest parties of the year.\r\n\r\nThe parties are normally quite wild, since the dorm is full of party people, and it is not unlikely to wake up wondering who you are, where you are and what happened last night. Beside the events for the whole dorm each floor will have their own parties, such as party after the main cleaning, Christmas parties, and Tour de Chambre.\r\n<h2>Location<\/h2>\r\nThe area around the dorm is nice and quiet, and there are a lot of different possibilities in the neighborhood, whether you like to go for a swim, go shopping in a mall or simply just want to go for a nice walk.\r\n\r\nThe dorm is located roughly about 4.5 km from city square hall, which means it takes about 20 minutes to get there by bike, but you can also use bus 33 that runs just outside the door at 4-6 times per hour.\r\n\r\nThe dorm is only a ten-minute walk from Sundby metro station and from Amagerbrogade (with lot of shopping options), which makes it easy to get home during the late hours. Also it\u2019s located only a 15-minute walk from Fields, in case Amagerbrogade does not fulfill your shopping needs.\r\n<h2>Leisure and sports<\/h2>\r\nSome of the other things located close to the dorm are Amager Strandpark and Amagerf\u00e6lled, which both are lovely nature reserves, especially during spring, summer and autumn.\r\n\r\nIt is also close to Islands Brygge, the Faculty of Arts (KUA) and the IT University of Copenhagen.\r\n\r\nLast but not least it is also located only two minutes away from a swimming bath and to different football clubs, and only a ten-minute bike ride from a sports centre, which gives you a great opportunity to do a lot of exercise.\r\n<h2>Party like there is no tomorrow<\/h2>\r\nLiving at Socialt Kollegium is a great life experience. Maj Kollegiet \u00bbthe most Danish dorm,\u00ab but also emphasises that both dorms try to be as inclusive as possible.\r\n\r\nHolger Wilhelm Ils\u00f8e, who lives in 4. Maj Kollegiet, agrees.\r\n\r\n\u00bbWe all share the common background that our grandparents were active during the resistance struggle,\u00ab he says. \u00bbHistory is tangible here.\u00ab\r\n\r\nTherefore, the most important moment of the year is May 4th at 20:36, when everyone stops whatever they are doing to listen to the message of freedom from 1945. This happens during the annual May 4th party, which residents spend at least a week planning each year.\r\n\r\n\u00bbThe day is steeped in tradition,\u00ab says Holger Wilhelm Ils\u00f8e. In the morning, the residents hoist the Danish flag, Dannebrog, and eat breakfast together, and in the evening, candles are lit around the entire building. For example, we do not want to discriminate,\u00ab adds Holger Wilhelm Ils\u00f8e. \u00bbSo we make a lot of effort to include as broad a range of the population as possible, in terms of education and social background.\u00ab\r\n\r\nTherefore, the dormitory has a requirement for equal gender distribution, and the application process focuses on ensuring that residents come from different parts of Denmark. But it has so much charm over it.\u00ab\r\n\r\nInstead of soldiers, the building is now home to approximately 500 students in 463 rooms with training rooms, laundry facilities and its own cinema.
