It is a requirement that you have passed 90 ECTS, and are enrolled at the University of Copenhagen, at HUM, SCIENCE, SUND or TEO. If you study at SAMF and JUR, you cannot apply to Borchs. And it’s a plus if attended Ribe cathedral school, like the founder Ole Borchs did.

Although Borchs is a dorm that houses 19 young people, the architecture is reminiscent of a large villa that could be found in the wealthy neighbourhoods to the north of Copenhagen.

An orderly, law-abiding dorm

»Funny enough, when I moved in, several people came from the north of Copenhagen. Generally speaking, everyone comes from a wealthy background. All the resident are students at the University of Copenhagen. Everything is very orderly. The worst I think people do is ride their bikes through red lights, if they are feeling a bit crazy,« says Christian Bro, who can call himself an old hand because he has lived in the dorm longer than any of the other current residents.

The dorm’s newest resident, Steffen Vestergaard Andersen, who is a good friend of Christian Bro’s, nuances the picture a bit.

An eclectic mix of crockery, if not students

»The residents here range from those who vote for the right-wing parties to those who vote for the extreme left-wing. There are people studying theology, biology, physics, mathematics, the various language subjects, the humanities, and so on.
The best way to visualise the diversity is to look at our crockery cupboard. You can see an eclectic mix of glasses and plates in there,« says Steffen Vestergaard Andersen, who has been a visitor at the dorm for several years and moved in as a true Borch resident in February.

»But then again, Steffen and I might be sitting here in linen shirts, while in the next room, there is someone with a dishevelled…« he hesitates for a moment to find the right word, then decides on »ponytail.«

»But, having said that, we have to admit that there is not that much diversity,« says Christian Bro.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

This is a review by a student reporter. But in the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.

The old boy’s club of Copenhagen dorms

A strong bond binds Copenhagen’s four oldest colleges, Valkendorf (anno 1589), Regensen (anno 1623), Elers (anno 1691) and Borchs (anno 1691), say Christian Bro and Steffen Vestergaard Andersen. The four old dorms are all members of Kollegiesamvirket, a network of dorms, which is abbreviated to KS in everyday speech.

The story of Borchs is rarely told without a comparison to one of the other three historical dorms. For example, not more than a minute had passed after the University Post had stepped into »Borchen« or »Borchingham Palace,« as the dorm is called, before Regensen was mentioned.

»This is the best,« says Christian Bro, his arms signalling the grandeur of the College.

»And I don’t want to tell you what we sing about Regensen. But they are not nice words. Having said that, we also stick together.«

The polite pupil in class

Christian Bro and Steffen Vestergaard Andersen are experts when it comes to details about the historical Copenhagen dorms. They speak about the four colleges and tell anecdotes as though they were old friends from private school. Copenhagen’s other dorms would be students of municipal schools in this metaphor.

At this hypothetical private school, Regensen is the hyperactive student full of good ideas and drive, Valkendorf is the cool student in the class, Elers is the nerdy and well-read student, while Borchs is the polite and talented one.

They speak harshly about the other colleges. However, a certain ironic distance in their tone suggests that it is meant affectionately. The friendly rivalries between the dorms have existed for decades, and one tradition in particular is characteristic of the four old dorms.

»We steal from each other,« says Christian Bro.

Steffen Vestergaard Andersen recounts, among many other tall tales, how Regensen, because of their large number of residents, »are lively and have a strong constitution. So while the all the Borch dorm residents were sleeping like babies – or at least sleeping off the booze after a KS party – the Regensen residents sneaked in and stole all the toilet doors.«

They placed the stolen goods in Regensen’s yard, and it took quite a while for the Borch residents to fetch their doors.

Breakfast and hand washing at the Constituent Assembly

Internally at the dorm, it is more peaceful, according to what we are told. Like in many other dorms, there are food clubs in the evening with cooking duties rotating among all the residents, and at Borchs it is customary to eat breakfast together.

Such traditions bind the residents together. That and the fact that they all have »a great shared interest in living together in the best possible way,« says Steffen Vestergaard Andersen.

The kitchen is the room in the dorm that most resembles a home from the 2020s. Here, neoclassical uniformity gives way to wooden cabinet doors, posters on the walls, magnets on the fridge – and, of course, mismatched crockery in the cupboards.

This is where the food clubs prepare their meals, »and The Constituent Assembly is right there, where I wash my hands,« says Christian Bro, pointing to a picture hanging above the kitchen sink, which shows men in black suits standing in a huddle looking into the distance.

Bookshelves and barrister’s wigs

All 19 residents eat together in the room the residents call Theca. A narrow room with dark green walls and heavy bookshelves, the largest of which only contains publications by former Borch residents. The exception is the Bible, which is also there.

This is where the dorm’s house meetings are held. And the Meetings of Officials, as they are called, are typically very long, with votes and debates on every agenda item. Participants also sing songs from the dorm’s own songbook at meetings.

»One of the things I pay attention to – and maybe it’s just me – is whether newcomers dare to sing along to the songs, even if they don’t quite know the lyrics. Do they dare to go outside of their comfort zone and make a sacrifice for the dorm?« asks Steffen Vestergaard Andersen rhetorically.

»It sounds a bit dramatic use the word »sacrifice,« but that is what you do. When you are at Officials’ Meetings, you might wish you were at a bar with your friends rather than going through the dorm’s accounts. But you make that sacrifice to attend the meeting nonetheless. Because it’s part of living here,« he explains.

Christian Bro adds that if your excuse for not coming to the meeting is your mother’s birthday, then it should at least be a round-number birthday.

Paintings of the old dorm founders and in particular Ole Borchs, the main founder of the college, adorn the room. Several of the founders are from the days of barristers’ wigs, so the dorm meetings are overseen by figures who resemble judges from an English courtroom.

Pig or Borch resident?

One structure of the dorm that has been preserved from its early day is the option of having a friend or partner stay in your room for just DKK 1,000 a month in rent. A so-called »pig«. The two friends tell us two stories about why a roommate is called a pig.

»One story is that every resident who lived here in the old days was entitled to a pig. So that they could slaughter it for food. But when that went out of fashion and we got Netto, the rule changed to being allowed a pig in your room,« says Steffen Vestergaard Andersen.

»And that’s the funny story. The other is that the name might come from [the Danish word for freeloader, ed] gratist,« says Christian Bro.

Should you wish to become a new pig or Borch resident, you can sign up for the Borch newsletter. This will let you know when a room becomes available.

You can stay in the dorm for a maximum of five years. And Christian would like to stay there longer.

[This is a review by a student reporter.

They placed the stolen goods in Regensen’s yard, and it took quite a while for the Borch residents to fetch their The dormitory currently houses 20 students of University of Copenhagen - all young, gifted, and handsome folk, who call themselves alumni of Borchs collegium.

Century old frenemies

Founded in 1691 by the multifaceted professor in philology, medicine and botany, Ole Borch, the dormitory has many traditions, some dating hundreds of years back.

These include celebrating the first snow with rum toddy in the garden and also the founder's birthday culminating in a splendid feast with abundances of port wine.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

The dormitory shares strong bonds with some of the other old dormitories in the city centre - the prominent Valkendorf, Vartov, Ehlers, and Regensen, the latter being the biggest and most famous of them, and therefore also subject to a fundamental hatred from all the others. The rivalry also exists between the other small dormitories, resulting in pranks, vandalism, and theft - though always in a friendly tone.

Step into Hogwarts

The student rooms differ in size, though not in price. Some have one big room. Others have two rooms, and the lucky few have two rooms and a mezzanine, literally making it a small apartment for the sheer price of 1.400 kroner. Incredible? Yes. Furnished? No.

The building itself stretches over five levels, three of them inhabited by humans. The ground floor holds five students sharing one kitchen, shower, and toilet. In addition to that, the library is also found here. Boasting hundreds of dusty books, some dating back before the 19th century, and a grand piano, it is quite the sight - and rather intimidating to newcomers.

But never judge a book by its cover. The first floor houses 7 people and the second 8, each floor sharing one kitchen, shower, and toilet. From the rooms facing the street, we can spy on drunken people in the street who are visiting 'Den Glade Gris' - the happy pig, in English - a place that truly lives up to its name. The alumni lucky enough to have a room facing the garden can enjoy the night's silence and the sight of other alumni studying/sunbathing in the summer. Quite the sight, at times.

To eat, to chat or to dance, that is the question

If you're not in the mood to cook, different food clubs will make you dinner several times a week at a cheap price. All in all, there is plenty of opportunities to eat together or just socialize around something else in the house.

Besides all of this, we have a cellar where the (free) washing machine is found. Other things worth mentioning down there, is the storage rooms, the workshop, and the wine cellar(!) where residents can find agents to help them pursuing all sorts of different objectives - getting clean clothes, fixing a bike (getting dirty clothes), or starting a party.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

Speaking of parties, we also enjoy the luxury of our very own ballroom, found on the top floor. Big parties and sometimes lectures are held here, and when it is vacant we often take pleasure in a game of table tennis in the light of the glorious disco ball. In the other end of the top floor is the TV room. Alumni do not seem to find any excuse small enough to spend an hour or three in its big, soft couches, watching a movie whilst at times waiting for their hangovers to lift.

Getting in

The alumni presently residing are responsible for running the dormitory on a daily basis. That includes garden work-days twice a year and other interchanging duties once every few months. Really, it isn't that hard and it helps establish a sense of ownership over the place, as well as shaping you up for eventually taking care of your own life, which some need more than others.

As for the alumni, they are a mix of students from the Humanities, Theology, and Science faculties. This is due to the constitution, which only allows students from mentioned faculties to move in. Also, you have to have finished at least two years of study before you can apply.

Despite that fact, we still boast a rather diverse crowd of people between 23 and 29 - only Danes at the moment - with an even gender distribution. This is entirely because we choose who moves in. Or, that is, two selected alumni read all applications every time a room is up for grabs, call some in for a talk and then pick whoever they feel fits in the best. Pure luxury.

Keep an eye on KU-net

The location makes it easy to satisfy any need a struggling student might have. Supermarkets, clothing shops, cafes, bars, and parks are just a few of the many offers within a five-minute bike radius. Especially worth mentioning is Paludan Bogcafé, a 30-second walk around the corner and an excellent place to study and maintain your caffeine addiction.

All in all, this must surely be the best place to stay for a student in all of Copenhagen! Though we expect everyone to participate in everyday maintenance we also get to decide many things about which direction we are moving in next. So - keep an eye out for entries on KU-net about vacant rooms, and you might just find yourself residing in our downtown chateau.

[This review has been written by a student reporter at the University Post. If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it 'Dorms Disclosed']

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

Review: Borchs Kollegium (first review)
Students review their own housing and accommodation in Copenhagen. It is a large historic redbrick building complete with tall windows, green gates and an archway facing Købmagergade. This very central dormitory has the best view of the Round Tower, which can be enjoyed from several of the rooms and vibrates with life and youth .

The facilities

Approximately 100 students live at Regensen in rooms that vary from 11-25 sq.m. All rooms have a wooden floor, large windows, high ceilings, a sink and a mirror. The buildings are more than a century old and possesses a lot of charm. When you first move in, it is likely that you will end up in one of the less attractive rooms that may be small or noisy, but you will soon be able to move to a nicer room.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

A Netto can be found just 160 meters away and the central locations means you can make a quick dash to the shops before a night out.

Kitchens are shared with approximately 8 students, and the same goes for the restrooms. There are two large bathrooms in the basement - one for girls and one for boys - and some of the hallways have a private bathroom. There is a laundry room with unlimited access to the washing machines and dryers with soap and softener included. All rooms have an Internet connection where WIFI can be installed. The Internet connection is supplied by KU and varies a bit in terms of efficiency.

Rent

A room starts at DKK 1400 a month with heat expenses included. Such a low rental price sounds to good to be true, but it isn’t. The remarkably low rent is due to an old fund which keeps the price down.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

This is a review by a student reporter. There is a small library and a ping-pong table, both of which will feature as part of the set in the new movie about Simon Spies and Mogens Glistrup. Furthermore there is a soccer team, yoga, movie nights, snaps brewing, evening seminars, a choir, and much more going on. There is always some kind of party at Regensen and you are welcome to join it!

In particular, each semester has three large parties: a theme party, a lunch or cabaret, and a good old-fashioned ball. When new students you move in, it is their duty to host these grand parties and ensure traditions such as speeches, songs and even the water fight are upheld. The introductory parties are the perfect way to get familiar with the other newbies and the Klokkere will always help you get safely through the festivities.

It can sometimes be daunting moving into a new home, but a Klokkerne consisting of two older residents who act as a 'Mum and Dad' for the new residents and will carefully explain everything and answer any questions.

The Societies

Another level of social interaction is the societies that consist of small groups within the dormitory. Each society has their own traditions, songs and tokens and they often have a dining club. There are many histories and traditions connected with these societies, but also room for inventing new ones.

There also seems to be a friendly rivalry between the different societies, resulting in mocking songs and the stealing of tokens. When you move in, you will be invited to meet the societies so that you can find one that suits you. Meeting the societies is also a great way to get introduced to the older residents. You are expected to learn the names of all 99 people you live with which may take time, but it is not impossible and illustrates the importance of social interaction at the dorm.

Requirements

Life at Regensen is quite special and you will build strong relationships with people from all different disciplines at KU, and a few from DTU as well.

Unless you originate from the Faroe Islands you will need to have studied for 2 years before you can apply for a room. This results in an age-group that is a bit older than other dormitories. Students tend to stay at Regsensen for as long as possible, which ranges from three to five years. Most of the students living at Regensen are Danes as Danish citizenship is a requirement. But do not despair, a room is offered to an exchange student staying 1 or 2 semesters and the Jonas Thomsen Sekyeres scholarship saves a room for a non-Danish citizen for a maximum of 5 years.

To get a spot at Regensen you need to apply through KU. Maj Kollegiet ['4th May dorm'] in Frederiksberg was founded almost 70 years ago to house the descendants of Danish World War II resistance members. However, this kinship requirement was recently abolished, so now anyone enrolled in a SU-eligible course can apply to live here – although being related to a resistance member will still improve your chances of getting in.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

A dorm within a dorm

Like a set of nesting dolls, 4. Maj Kollegiet has another dormitory within it, namely the tiny Hassagers Kollegium, which is home to 10 students. Hassagers Kollegium, which pre-dates 4. Maj Kollegiet, was founded by Dorothea Hassager. Here, the entry requirements are a little different. Unlike the 4. Maj Kollegiet, which is open to all students, Hessagers Kollegium is only open to students who have completed 120 ECTS credits at the University of Copenhagen.

The residents share common areas with those from 4. Maj Kollegiet, and they help to preserve the traditions of the dorms.

4. To apply for a spot at Hassagers Kollegium, you have to write a motivated application via the University of Copenhagen (read more here).

The most Danish dorm

May Ling Foo, who lives at Hassagers Kollegium, jokingly calls the 4. Maj Kollegiet »the most Danish dorm,« but also emphasises that both dorms try to be as inclusive as possible.

Holger Wilhelm Ilsøe, who lives in 4. Maj Kollegiet, agrees.

»We all share the common background that our grandparents were active during the resistance struggle,« he says. »History is tangible here.«

Therefore, the most important moment of the year is May 4th at 20:36, when everyone stops whatever they are doing to listen to the message of freedom from 1945. This happens during the annual May 4th party, which residents spend at least a week planning each year.

»The day is steeped in tradition,« says Holger Wilhelm Ilsøe. In the morning, the residents hoist the Danish flag, Dannebrog, and eat breakfast together, and in the evening, candles are lit around the entire building. Then there is a gala dinner with a three-course menu, which is thoroughly tested at rehearsal dinners several days in advance.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

Reading room, »if you like that sort of thing«

During the year, the building’s 'birthday' is celebrated on September 18th, and residents at Hassagers Kollegium keep up the tradition of baking copious amounts of cake to mark Dorothea Hassager's birthday on September 25th.

»We prioritise traditions quite a lot,« says May Ling Foo from Hassagers Kollegium, but she also says that it is not the type of place where there is a party every weekend.

»I feel there is room for everyone here.«

»We also want to exemplify the ideals of the resistance struggle. For example, we do not want to discriminate,« adds Holger Wilhelm Ilsøe. »So we make a lot of effort to include as broad a range of the population as possible, in terms of education and social background.«

Therefore, the dormitory has a requirement for equal gender distribution, and the application process focuses on ensuring that residents come from different parts of Denmark. The dorm is also open to students from all educational programmes.

For DKK 2,375 a month, the residents get access to a shared kitchen, toilet, and bathroom as well as a balcony with a view of what May Ling Foo calls, »Copenhagen's most beautiful garden.«

»We also have a reading room, if you like that sort of thing,« adds Holger Wilhelm Ilsøe with a smile.

[This review has been written by a student reporter at the University Post. I might also have used the word ‘ugly’ as a descriptive – and there is no doubt that the exterior of Bikuben Kollegiet (the 'Beehive') is unusual. Sitting between the old 19th century blocks of Amagerbro and the sandy-coloured university complex, Bikuben Kollegiet definitely stands out.

The University Post has reviewed the Bikuben dorm a second time. Read the later review here.

Brown, orange and concrete

The building was completed in 2006 which means that the dorm offers all the amenities a student can hope for. There is a fitness room, party hall, lounge, study room and several outdoor terraces. The topmost terrace is on the sixth floor and offers a great view over Copenhagen and Amager – perfect for New Year’s Eve parties and summer night barbeques.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

There are six floors, and each is a little different. However the student rooms are much the same. Each person gets a bathroom and a kitchenette, and the room itself is spacious and white. Concrete is an integral part of the building’s design which means that the ceilings in the rooms are made of this material, and that most rooms have a wall which is partly made of concrete.

The design of the common areas is dominated by browns and oranges. This design decision is often frowned upon by the inhabitants who find it a bit odd that anybody would choose these 1970's colors to match the dorm's expensive and modern furniture. Thankfully, the common kitchens are a neutral white, and – as anybody who has ever lived in an old Copenhagen apartment will be able to appreciate – there are dishwashers!

Halloween, Christmas and social life

Like the architecture, the social life on each floor is different. The most accurate description would be that it is what you make of it. Bikuben Kollegiet has its private Facebook group where people often post if they are having a kitchen party or if they are showing a movie in the lounge. Usually everybody is invited, and it is always a pleasure when a new face shows up.

If you want a social dorm life it is a great idea to join one of Bikuben’s many committees. My recommendation would be the Party Committee as they get together regularly to organize Bikuben’s parties.

Last semester Bikuben had two official parties: The Halloween Party and the Christmas Lunch. Both were preceded by pre-parties: The Pumpkin Party where we carved pumpkins for Halloween decorations, and the Christmas Decoration party where the Baking Committee served cakes and everybody folded Christmas hearts and Christmas stars.

Life on the 4th floor

My floor is one of the most social in the dorm. Most of the time you’ll find people hanging out in the kitchens and the common rooms, and we regularly organize events as well as consume a lot of boxed wine. This means that we have what we call "Red Wine Friday", which does not necessarily have to be on a Friday.

Sometimes we celebrate Red Wine Friday three times a week. On our floor, most days of the week are connected with a particular kind of alcohol: Cocktail Monday, Tequila Tuesday, Vodka Saturday and so on. We did however deem it necessary to develop Abstinence Wednesday too.

Each Monday we have the official dinner club where the residents of the fourth floor cook for each other. Often many impromptu dinners happen too as a lot of the residents like to cook and make use of the opportunity to get many people together in order to be able to afford an excellent dinner on a student budget.

A modern home

While the beauty of Bikuben Kollegiet can be discussed, there is no doubt that it is a great luxury to live in a modern building. While the old Copenhagen apartments are charming, you can’t help but appreciate the fact that an elevator takes you to your floor, that a dishwasher is right at hand or that the building is isolated so well that you hardly ever hear your neighbours.

And in the dark winter evenings when you see, not the orange and the gray colors, but the welcoming irregular squares of light shining from the box, Bikuben is an especially nice place to call home.

Review: Bikuben Kollegiet (first review)
Some may call Bikuben Kollegiet ugly, but underneath the 70s-style colour palette you find ultra modern facilities and in the summer there are rooftop parties
["GET
