It is a cliché to say that a place reeks of history. This can be true for only a few places, and this is one of them. The first thing you meet is an entrance hall with an old wooden staircase in subtle red and grey colours that winds up through the building in an almost medieval fashion. An old photo of Queen Margrethe II hangs on the wall.

SEE THE FULL ‘DORMS DISCLOSED’ UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

»The reason the residence hall was founded is actually quite peculiar,« says one of the Inspector Collegi Anna Christine Wiisbye. She and her fellow collegiate Peter Winkel Rasmussen have the two inspector positions at the residence hall, and their role is, among other things, to be responsible for guided tours and the daily operations.

She explains that at Elers’ Kollegium various other ‘civil servants’ are responsible for different things, like the Resident Hall’s communal gardens or the parties. And she tells us the residence hall’s origin story:

FACTS

Elers’ Kollegium, www.elers.dk

Store Kannikestræde 9, 1169 Copenhagen K.

Rent: DKK 1,662 for bachelor students DKK 3,116 for PhD students

Average age: 25-26 years-old.

Application process: Application via a form on the Elers’ website. You can only apply for spaces that are posted, so keep an eye on the website. You need to have passed a minimum of two years of study within the prescribed time to apply. Several of the places are earmarked for people from selected study programmes, so it is only possible to apply if you study this. There are two free places that can be applied for by all students at UCPH. Students are given precedence if they can prove to be related to the founder Jørgen Elers or his wife Anna Margrethe Wandalls. These relatives are the only people excepted from the two-year completed studies rule.

An (almost) exclusive club

Anna Christine says that this particular story explains why you have precedence to get into the dormitory if you can prove to be related to either Jørgen Elers or his wife Anna Margrethe Wandall.

In addition, not anyone can apply for the residence hall, she says: »We have 20 places and several of them are earmarked for specific study programmes. Five of the places are for theology students.«

On the website, you can read that Jørgen Elers decided at the time to have five theology students living there, with two from history, law or political science, two medical students, one Scandinavian, Germanic, Romance languages or English student, and a natural history or geography student.

»On King Christian V’s birthday in 1689, he was celebrated with an opera, and this opera was later performed for the public. Two sons of the state councillor Jørgen Elers were present. A wick fell down from a lamp above the stage, and within no time a fire had engulfed the entire building. Because the doors opened inwards, and the crowd pressed against the doors, nobody could get out, and Elers’ sons perished in the fire. Elers and his wife founded the Elers’ dorm. Because they no longer had any children themselves, they wanted to do something good for others.«

»Elers’ Kollegie is very old school in this way,« says Peter Winkel Rasmussen. »It reflects the university, as it looked in 1689, when it was founded. That’s why there are so many theology places, as theology then was the largest degree programme.«

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

This is a review by a student reporter. But in the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.

»Yes, and it’s not up to us to decide who gets in. We have two ‘denominators,’ who represent Elers’ and his wife’s family. They are the ones who receive the applications and who choose who will get in,« Anna Christine Wiisbye adds. They are both happy with admissions working this way.

»It’s great, because it’s never going to be a ‘friends of friends’ dorm. You are not going to think that you might as well not apply, because you can only be admitted if you know someone. We are a mixed bunch.«

Strong community with many traditions

The many years that the residence hall has existed has led to solid traditions and a strong sense of community. The age span among students is huge, it goes from 19 to 31 years, and people are from very different degree programmes and backgrounds.

But everyone here is focussed on their studies, according to Anna Christine Wiisbye. She adds that this is an aspect that the denominators deem important when they review applications. But the most important thing that the residents have in common is the wish to be a part of a community. »You don’t just have an address here, you have to live here,« she says.

Peter Winkel Rasmussen explains that that the residence hall has a dinner club five times a week and several parties, many of them traditional.

»We have something called a goose feast every year, where the old alåmner, or alumni turn up. And we have a carnival party and a croquet tournament,« adds Anna Christine. It is another relic of the past that alumni are named alåmne with the Danish ‘å’ at Elers’ residence hall.

Their way of communicating with each other also takes place in the period before Facebook. »We hold being very analogue as a virtue. That’s why we have this book. If you have to write something to someone at the residence hall, this is where you do it,« says Peter and displays a thick book located in the middle of the common room, Lectoriet.

Garden sauna and dining under open skies

We walk through the residence hall, the large common room with the huge bookcase and the thick upholstered furniture, past the many rooms and a kitchen which, unlike everything else on site, looks strikingly modern.

Anna Christine and Peter hurry to explain that this is because the kitchens were renovated not so many years ago. We end up in the garden, which feels like a pocket of tranquility, even though Copenhagen’s Round Tower can be seen above the rooftops. The residents regret that they cannot show the gardens as it looks like in the summer months, with roses on the bushes, and garden furniture set forth for open air dining.

»On the other hand, we have a sauna which is incredibly popular in the winter months,« says Peter, pointing towards a tiny building at one end of the garden. »Especially at parties, in the middle of the night, it’s not uncommon for it to be turned on.«

He has been a resident for almost six years. He has both lived here as a student and as a PhD student. Anna Christine has had an address here since 2017. They both agree on one thing: »This is really great place to live.«

[This is a review by a student reporter. bedazzled by the Elers’ residence hall on Store Kannikestræde street in central Copenhagen.

"1536x1536":"https://uniavisen.dk/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/opgang.jpg","1536x1536-width":1200,"1536x1536-height":800,"2048x2048":"https://uniavisen.dk/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/opgang.jpg","2048x2048-width":1200,"2048x2048-height":800
"1536x1536":"https://uniavisen.dk/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/daisy6.jpg","1536x1536-width":1200,"1536x1536-height":770,"2048x2048":"https://uniavisen.dk/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/daisy6.jpg","2048x2048-width":1200,"2048x2048-height":770

»Elers’ Kollegie is very old school in this way,« says Peter Winkel Rasmussen. »It reflects the university, as it looked in 1689, when it was founded.

And it's a plus if attended Ribe cathedral school, like the founder Ole Borchs did.

Although Borchs is a dorm that houses 19 young people, the architecture is reminiscent of a large villa that could be found in the wealthy neighbourhoods to the north of Copenhagen.

An orderly, law-abiding dorm

»Funny enough, when I moved in, several people came from the north of Copenhagen. Generally speaking, everyone comes from a wealthy background. All the resident are students at the University of Copenhagen. Everything is very orderly. The worst I think people do is ride their bikes through red lights, if they are feeling a bit crazy,« says Christian Bro, who can call himself an old hand because he has lived in the dorm longer than any of the other current residents.

The dorm's newest resident, Steffen Vestergaard Andersen, who is a good friend of Christian Bro's, nuances the picture a bit.

An eclectic mix of crockery, if not students

»The residents here range from those who vote for the right-wing parties to those who vote for the extreme left-wing. There are people studying theology, biology, physics, mathematics, the various language subjects, the humanities, and so on.
The best way to visualise the diversity is to look at our crockery cupboard. You can see an eclectic mix of glasses and plates in there,« says Steffen Vestergaard Andersen, who has been a visitor at the dorm for several years and moved in as a true Borch resident in February.

»But then again, Steffen and I might be sitting here in linen shirts, while in the next room, there is someone with a dishevelled...« he hesitates for a moment to find the right word, then decides on »ponytail.«

»But, having said that, we have to admit that there is not that much diversity,« says Christian Bro.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

The old boy's club of Copenhagen dorms

A strong bond binds Copenhagen's four oldest colleges, Valkendorf (anno 1589), Regensen (anno 1623), Elers (anno 1691) and Borchs (anno 1691), say Christian Bro and Steffen Vestergaard Andersen. The four old dorms are all members of Kollegiesamvirket, a network of dorms, which is abbreviated to KS in everyday speech.

The story of Borchs is rarely told without a comparison to one of the other three historical dorms. For example, not more than a minute had passed after the University Post had stepped into »Borchen« or »Borchingham Palace,« as the dorm is called, before Regensen was mentioned.

»This is the best,« says Christian Bro, his arms signalling the grandeur of the College.

»And I don't want to tell you what we sing about Regensen. But they are not nice words. Having said that, we also stick together.«

The polite pupil in class

Christian Bro and Steffen Vestergaard Andersen are experts when it comes to details about the historical Copenhagen dorms. They speak about the four colleges and tell anecdotes as though they were old friends from private school. Copenhagen's other dorms would be students of municipal schools in this metaphor.

At this hypothetical private school, Regensen is the hyperactive student full of good ideas and drive, Valkendorf is the cool student in the class, Elers is the nerdy and well-read student, while Borchs is the polite and talented one.

They speak harshly about the other colleges. However, a certain ironic distance in their tone suggests that it is meant affectionately. The friendly rivalries between the dorms have existed for decades, and one tradition in particular is characteristic of the four old dorms.

»We steal from each other,« says Christian Bro.

Steffen Vestergaard Andersen recounts, among many other tall tales, how Regensen, because of their large number of residents, »are lively and have a strong constitution. So while the all the Borch dorm residents were sleeping like babies – or at least sleeping off the booze after a KS party – the Regensen residents sneaked in and stole all the toilet doors.«

They placed the stolen goods in Regensen's yard, and it took quite a while for the Borch residents to fetch their doors.

Breakfast and hand washing at the Constituent Assembly

Internally at the dorm, it is more peaceful, according to what we are told. Like in many other dorms, there are food clubs in the evening with cooking duties rotating among all the residents, and at Borchs it is customary to eat breakfast together.

Such traditions bind the residents together. That and the fact that they all have »a great shared interest in living together in the best possible way,« says Steffen Vestergaard Andersen.

The kitchen is the room in the dorm that most resembles a home from the 2020s. Here, neoclassical uniformity gives way to wooden cabinet doors, posters on the walls, magnets on the fridge – and, of course, mismatched crockery in the cupboards.

This is where the food clubs prepare their meals, »and The Constituent Assembly is right there, where I wash my hands,« says Christian Bro, pointing to a picture hanging above the kitchen sink, which shows men in black suits standing in a huddle looking into the distance.

Bookshelves and barrister's wigs

All 19 residents eat together in the room the residents call Theca. A narrow room with dark green walls and heavy bookshelves, the largest of which only contains publications by former Borch residents. The exception is the Bible, which is also there.

This is where the dorm's house meetings are held. And the Meetings of Officials, as they are called, are typically very long, with votes and debates on every agenda item. Participants also sing songs from the dorm's own songbook at meetings.

»One of the things I pay attention to – and maybe it's just me – is whether newcomers dare to sing along to the songs, even if they don't quite know the lyrics. Do they dare to go outside of their comfort zone and make a sacrifice for the dorm?« asks Steffen Vestergaard Andersen rhetorically.

»It sounds a bit dramatic use the word »sacrifice,« but that is what you do. When you are at Officials' Meetings, you might wish you were at a bar with your friends rather than going through the dorm's accounts. But you make that sacrifice to attend the meeting nonetheless. Because it's part of living here,« he explains.

Christian Bro adds that if your excuse for not coming to the meeting is your mother's birthday, then it should at least be a round-number birthday.

Paintings of the old dorm founders and in particular Ole Borchs, the main founder of the college, adorn the room. Several of the founders are from the days of barristers' wigs, so the dorm meetings are overseen by figures who resemble judges from an English courtroom.

Pig or Borch resident?

One structure of the dorm that has been preserved from its early day is the option of having a friend or partner stay in your room for just DKK 1,000 a month in rent. A so-called »pig«. The two friends tell us two stories about why a roommate is called a pig.

»One story is that every resident who lived here in the old days was entitled to a pig. So that they could slaughter it for food. But when that went out of fashion and we got Netto, the rule changed to being allowed a pig in your room,« says Steffen Vestergaard Andersen.

»And that's the funny story. The other is that the name might come from [the Danish word for freeloader, ed] gratist,« says Christian Bro.

Should you wish to become a new pig or Borch resident, you can sign up for the Borch newsletter. This will let you know when a room becomes available.

You can stay in the dorm for a maximum of five years. And Christian would like to stay there longer.

[This is a review by a student reporter. You may be spending half your time on a stranger’s couch and the other half either partying or sleeping on a bench. Instead of living such a life, we suggest that you settle in our haven of comfort and fun in this huge city of otherwise unfriendly Danes.

Our haven is located just between Amagerbro metro station and KUA in a big redbrick building that we, a bunch of 219 diverse students, call home. And no, it is not Tietgen or Bikuben. It is Rasmus Nielsens Kollegium (RNK), which for some reason is unknown to many. We find this weird, since it undoubtedly is one of the best dorms in Copenhagen, and we think that anyone who is interested should get a chance to live here.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

Cheap and central

Living in Copenhagen is not cheapest, but if you get into a dorm like Rasmus Nielsens Kollegium, it is actually quite affordable. The dorm dates back to 1961, which makes the rent a lot cheaper than that of other dorms. With a room at RNK, you have everything you need; each room has both a kitchen and a bathroom, and there are washing machines and dryers in the basement, which are free to use! In addition, RNK is located only 10 minutes away from the inner city and only 200 meters away from Amagerbro metro station.

The dorm has five floors, each with a common kitchen. The five common kitchens have different priorities and identities, which means your experience here will very much depend on which floor you end up on. The third floor, for instance, is a very sociable and warm floor. Every night is food club night, on Saturdays we drink wine and play games, and we welcome anyone into the kitchen with open arms. Especially if you like crocheting and knitting. The fifth floor, or the penthouse as they like to call themselves, is the matchmaking and party floor. Everyone is a couple, and if you are not part of one, you are likely to find your match there. Despite the differences of the kitchens, we all value the social aspect of everyday life and focus on turning the common kitchens into common homes.

The best part of living at RNK is the people. They become your new family; people to come home to, with whom you share your stories of the day, cook meals with and watch bad television - you know, spending ‘family-time’. We help each other and we enjoy each other’s company.

Joining a Community

If you feel like meeting other people and contributing to the social life at RNK, there are several committees that you can join. The obvious first choice is the Party Committee, in which you can make all your party fantasies come true. The Party Committee is in charge of organizing a number of parties every year; most of them with a theme. On top of that, they organize the famous Manhattan Festival every summer. If you are not into heavy drinking and partying all night, then S Club 5 is another committee organizing social events for all RNK residents. In summer, they organize barbecues, bonfires and a midsummers party. In winter, movie clubs, bingo nights, game nights and Thursday cafés take the scene.

The RNK parties in the basement are a loved tradition by residents, as opposed to pretty much any other party, you have unlimited access to a queue-free and private bathroom just an elevator ride away. No matter how much you drink; your bed will remain within crawling distance at all times. Alternatively, someone else will carry you there. Apart from the convenience of partying ‘at home’, the bar is also cheap, the dance floor quickly gets crowded, you get to pick your own music and the parties have the warm atmosphere of a family reunion.

Now, there is naturally another thing to consider. With so many friends living right next door it can be difficult to get anything done besides having fun. Studying is not going to take care of itself. In our kitchen we have tried to fix this problem by studying collectively in the kitchen; admittedly not something that happens very often, but it has been known to happen. Otherwise, the dorm also has a common study room in the basement that everyone is free to use or you can isolate yourself in your room.

At RNK, we are gifted with lots of great facilities. Apart from the ones already mentioned, we have two rooms in the basement, where you can park your bike. We also have a gym, where you can practice everything from rowing to heavy weight lifting. For more social workouts, you can join the frequent cross fit classes, run once a week with RNK Runners, play football and basketball on our new outside sports court or do yoga in our lovely back garden.

Student reviews of residence halls

In the University Post Dorms Disclosed series, student residents write a review their own dorms and residence halls in English.

Here is an overview of all the Copenhagen residence halls, collegiums and dormitories.

Living at Rasmus Nielsen Kollegium, you will have everything you need in a redbrick haven.
