
{"id":12946,"date":"2013-04-11T00:30:03","date_gmt":"2013-04-10T22:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/?p=12946\/"},"modified":"2019-06-14T09:43:26","modified_gmt":"2019-06-14T07:43:26","slug":"eu-ruling-danish-su-student-grants-for-all-eu-citizens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/eu-ruling-danish-su-student-grants-for-all-eu-citizens\/","title":{"rendered":"EU ruling: Danish SU student grants for all EU citizens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This could be good news for EU nationals studying in Denmark: According to a new ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), EU citizens are entitled to full SU, as long as they have been, or are currently, working in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The government estimates that the ruling would cost Denmark approximately DKK 200 million per year, and Danish parties from across the political spectrum are voicing their concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The right-wing Danish People&#8217;s Party (DF) worries that the estimated amount may grow much larger, and are demanding that <a href=\"node\/18426\" target=\"blank\">the current SU-reform<\/a> takes the EU ruling into consideration.<\/p>\n<h2>EU ruling will be considered<\/h2>\n<p>\u00bbWe have to include a statement on how we intend to handle the matter: it doesn&#8217;t make sense to restructure SU if we know that we will face new and complex problems so soon afterwards,\u00ab <a href=\"http:\/\/www.altinget.dk\/forskning\/artikel\/eu-dom-blokerer-for-su-reform\" target=\"blank\">says DF&#8217;s Jens Henrik Thulesen Dahl to the Danish politics site Altinget.dk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/su-for-international-students-how-to-apply\/\">Read more: SU for international students &#8211; how to apply<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, the Minister of Science, Innovation, and Higher Education, Morten \u00d8stergaard, says that the EU ruling won&#8217;t have an effect on the SU reform talks:<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThe SU reform is to make sure that the we have an SU system that is geared to a larger number of students, and that will allow us to invest in creating jobs,\u00ab Morten \u00d8stergaard (R) says to Ritzau. \u00bbThis ruling is a result of our EU membership, and we &#8211; of course &#8211; have to support its convictions.\u00ab<\/p>\n<h2>Agreement to follow<\/h2>\n<p>The left-wing party the Red-Green Alliance (Enhedslisten) has also stated that the Danish grants system is a national benefit intended specifically for Danish students, and should not involve the EU:<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbEU citizenship shouldn&#8217;t automatically lead to SU eligibility,,\u00ab says Nikolaj Villumsen of the Red-Green Alliance. \u00bbIt would put an unreasonable strain on the grants system, and the EU is infringing on this boundary.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not the EU ruling will be written into the new SU reform still isn&#8217;t known. Things might change","use_post_excerpt":false},{"acf_fc_layout":"Byline","is_author":false,"contributors":[{"use_registered_user":false,"user":false,"contributor_name":"Therese Leonhardt Hjorth, English version Sebastian Zieler","contributor_title":"\u00a0","contributor_image":false}]},{"acf_fc_layout":"Content","content":"<p>This could be good news for EU nationals studying in Denmark: According to a new ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), EU citizens are entitled to full SU, as long as they have been, or are currently, working in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The government estimates that the ruling would cost Denmark approximately DKK 200 million per year, and Danish parties from across the political spectrum are voicing their concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The right-wing Danish People&#8217;s Party (DF) worries that the estimated amount may grow much larger, and are demanding that <a href=\"node\/18426\" target=\"blank\">the current SU-reform<\/a> takes the EU ruling into consideration.<\/p>\n<h2>EU ruling will be considered<\/h2>\n<p>\u00bbWe have to include a statement on how we intend to handle the matter: it doesn&#8217;t make sense to restructure SU if we know that we will face new and complex problems so soon afterwards,\u00ab <a href=\"http:\/\/www.altinget.dk\/forskning\/artikel\/eu-dom-blokerer-for-su-reform\" target=\"blank\">says DF&#8217;s Jens Henrik Thulesen Dahl to the Danish politics site Altinget.dk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/su-for-international-students-how-to-apply\/\">Read more: SU for international students &#8211; how to apply<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, the Minister of Science, Innovation, and Higher Education, Morten \u00d8stergaard, says that the EU ruling won&#8217;t have an effect on the SU reform talks:<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThe SU reform is to make sure that the we have an SU system that is geared to a larger number of students, and that will allow us to invest in creating jobs,\u00ab Morten \u00d8stergaard (R) says to Ritzau. \u00bbThis ruling is a result of our EU membership, and we &#8211; of course &#8211; have to support its convictions.\u00ab<\/p>\n<h2>Agreement to follow<\/h2>\n<p>The left-wing party the Red-Green Alliance (Enhedslisten) has also stated that the Danish grants system is a national benefit intended specifically for Danish students, and should not involve the EU:<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbEU citizenship shouldn&#8217;t automatically lead to SU eligibility,,\u00ab says Nikolaj Villumsen of the Red-Green Alliance. \u00bbIt would put an unreasonable strain on the grants system, and the EU is infringing on this boundary.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not the EU ruling will be written into the new SU reform still isn&#8217;t known.
