Ahead of Thursday\u2019s planned demonstration <\/a> against cuts in student grants, a number of prominent local council Social Democrats have publicly come out against the proposal to fund corporate tax relief with cuts in social entitlements, writes Seven59.dk.<\/p>\n

Copenhagen Town Hall youth and childen administrator Anne Vang says she has difficulty recognising her own party.<\/p>\n

But the Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt says people are free to say and think what they want. But there will be no change in policy and she won\u2019t be turned.<\/p>\n

SU system is robust<\/h2>\n

“Everybody has an opinion but we have laid out a strong policy that will create jobs in the private sector and that\u2019s all that counts,\u201d she said, adding that she wasn\u2019t alarmed by the prospect of a major demonstration outside parliament today Thursday.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019ve modified the student grant and loan system far more far more gently than the previous Lib\/Con coalition would have done and we\u2019re satisfied with the outcome.” <\/p>\n

“The system remains robust but we\u2019ve managed to save some money in certain areas.”<\/p>\n

Poll: Support for government<\/h2>\n

In a related development, school teachers are also expected to demonstrate today, as their bargaining for an agreement broke down. <\/p>\n

A Gallup poll shows that 54 per cent of the Danish populace agree with the overall government stimulus package, which includes SU cuts, is a \u2018good idea\u2019. Just 29 per cent are against. They were not specifically asked about the SU cutbacks.<\/p>\n
