Go to salsa and swing classes

One of the most popular student cafés or bars is Studenterhuset. Some reasons for its popularity are the cheap beer and the variety of activities that they offer for free. Every Sunday night at 19.00 they offer free salsa classes, and on Tuesday night they have swing night from 19.30. Put on your dancing shoes, grab your student ID and start moving your body.

For this, and other events, check their webpage.

Studenterhuset Webpage

9. Join a club

The University of Copenhagen (UCPH) offers a variety of societies you can join if you are a student, such as the history society (Magistra Vitae), the greek and latin society (Phrontisterium) or the international society (ESN-Copenhagen). They normally organize fun meetings such as ‘cake competition’s or ‘movie night’s, where you can meet other members. You can discover more associations on the University of Copenhagen’s Saxo Institute page here..

8. Get free tea and chocolate

After a hard day attending lectures, some of the university’s bars offer free, or heavily discounted, drinks to their students. An example is the Friday bar at the forme LIFE campus, now Faculty of Science, called A-vej that offers free tea or hot chocolate every Tuesday and Thursday. Drop by and complain with others about the hardships of student life.

A-vej Friday Bar

7. Volunteer

Volunteering is one of the easiest things to do to meet people. Not only will you feel better about yourself, and clean up your karma, but you will also learn plenty of new things and meet people with similar interests. If interested, click on the pages of Café Retro, StudenterHuset, or CHP Volunteering.

You can be a bartender at Café Retro or Studenterhuset, where you will not only meet your work colleagues but will also get to interact with clients. No bartending experience necessary!

Café Retro and StudenterHuset here.

6. Take a free meditation lesson

Meditation lessons can not only be useful to hold up to your stressful everyday routine, but they can also be a great meeting place during the small chat at the start and end of the session. There are various places all over Copenhagen were you can go and find out if meditation is your thing. Even if you do not like it, you will at least get a warm beverage and a new experience.

You can find a list of meditation practices here, (or if you are interested try the Buddhist variant).

5. Do a sport

Sports always brings people together. The place where you can start practicing one is at USG. They offer a big variety of sports, which has training offered in English or Danish. If you are a student, the price is a bargain.

If you are already sure of your capabilities, consider the Copenhagen Marathon where you can meet other participants and get a 50 per cent discount if you’re a student: USG and Copenhagen Marathon

4. Surf a couch, and meet to talk about it

If you are looking for a free place to stay during your holidays, or if you want to offer your floor for somebody else to sleep on, you should get familiarized with the couch-surfing network. You can meet people from all over the globe, and in Copenhagen: Go to one of the meetings that the members organize in Copenhagen and find out more about the people that participate.

Couchsurfing network

3. Be a rock star

Café Retro, one of the cosiest bars in Copenhagen, offers several fun and diverse activities each week. Their variety goes from learning a new language, or writing letters, to drawing, and enjoying free live music each Saturday after 20.00.

If you want to get in touch with your inner rock star, you can also have your band perform in one of their open-mic nights. What better way to meet people than being a rock star?

Find more about the inner-city Café Retro, and their sister-café, Retro Nørrebro here..

2. Join the meet-up networking

Meet-up is a free registration web page, where you are able to find a variety of events related to your interests. All you have to do is to sign up, and choose your interests, and you will automatically have all manners of related events appear on your calendar. From there you will be able to find more information about the event, along with its location, price, and other attendees.

Meet-up Network.

1. Swap languages

And now to our top pick: This is a great idea:

Tired of visiting Spain where nobody understands you, if you do’nt speak Spanish? Maybe you want to understand the French movies that you see, or you just want to finally be able to order a beer in Danish. Why not to attempt to learn the language you have always been interested in. Chances are good, there will be somebody willing to teach you your language of choice, or you can pay it forward by teaching somebody your native tongue.

Try searching for possible partners on Facebook groups such as “ESN CPH: Give-Buy-Sell-Rent” or ‘Copenhagen’s FREE Service Trade and ‘Pay it Forward’ Community’.

So that was it!
