Four out of the top five universities in the world will soon be headed by a woman.<\/p>\n

This is according to Times Higher Education (THE) and based on numbers from their World University Rankings for 2023. The information has been timed to mark International Women\u2019s Day this Wednesday 8 March.<\/p>\n

Both Oxford, Harvard, Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), will have female managers when Claudine Gay takes up her position at Harvard and Deborah Prentice takes up her position at Cambridge. They both start in July. Stanford University is thereby the only university in the World University Ranking\u2019s top five that is not headed by a woman.<\/p>\n

Universities \u00bbstill need to do more\u00ab<\/h3>\n

Nearly a quarter, 48 of the world\u2019s top 200 universities on the ranking, have female presidents or vice-chancellors, up from 43 last year.<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt\u2019s amazing to see that four of the top five universities in the world will shortly be led by women. They will be an inspiration to their staff, students and other universities around the world,\u00ab says THE rankings editor Rosa Ellis, adding that universities still need to do more to advance women\u2019s roles at the top of universities and in all of its outputs.<\/p>\n

The World University Ranking methodology traditionally gives a higher rank to Anglo-American institutions than other rankings, so it is interesting to see how women fare in non-Anglo-American institutions: Within the top 200, five German universities are headed by women, three more than last year, according to THE. This includes the University of T\u00fcbingen, the University of Freiburg and the Technical University of Berlin.<\/p>\n

Only RUC headed by a woman in Denmark<\/h3>\n

None of the three top-ranked Danish universities on the World University Rankings \u2013 the University of Copenhagen, Aarhus University and the Technical University of Denmark \u2013 are headed by women.<\/p>\n

Of the four remaining university institutions in Denmark, only Roskilde University (RUC) has a woman manager in the form of its rector Hanne Leth Andersen.

UCPH has generally been lower on Times Higher Education's ranking than on other recognized rankings, and has moved back and forwards over the years. Within the last ten years we have been everywhere between 160 and 84,\u00ab says Vice Director for Research and Innovation at the University of Copenhagen Kim Brinckmann.\r\n\r\nAmong Nordic neighbours, Sweden's Karolinska Institutet is at 49th place. Finland\u2019s best performing University of Helsinki is at 110th place, while Norway\u2019s University of Oslo is at 126th.\r\n\r\nAs a continent, Europe continues to lose position relative to Asia, according to Times Higher Education.\r\n<div class=\"factbox\">\r\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">UCPH IN THE RANKINGS<\/p>\r\nTHE World University Rankings (2023): 114th\r\n\r\nAcademic Ranking of World Universities \u2014Shanghai (2022): 39th\r\n\r\nQS World University Rankings (2023):\u00a0 82nd\r\n\r\nLeiden ranking (no topline number released)\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<blockquote>You have to run very fast to stand still in the global rankings\r\n<p class=\"quotee\">Phil Baty, Chief Knowledge Officer, THE World University Ranking<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\u00bbEurope is of course a thriving powerhouse of world-class higher education and research, but a significant shift in the balance of power in the knowledge economy has taken place, with Asian universities now outnumbering those from Europe in the overall Times Higher Education World University Rankings,\u00ab says Phil Baty, Chief Knowledge Officer at Times Higher Education.\r\n\r\nHe adds that \u00bbyou have to run very fast to stand still in the global rankings and losing ground can risk a vicious circle of gradually losing access to global talent and partnerships.\u00ab\n<!-- end of module 1 -->\nThe top five spots on the 2023 ranking are taken by the University of Oxford (UK), Harvard University (US), University of Cambridge (UK), Stanford University (US) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (US) in that order.\r\n\r\nThe THE methodology traditionally gives a higher rank to Anglo-American institutions than other rankings, and this year is no exception: Outside the UK and US, it is ETH Zurich of Switzerland that is the highest-ranked (European continent) university with 11th place.\r\n<div class=\"factbox\">\r\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Danish universities in the TIMES ranking<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>University of Copenhagen ( = 114th)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Aarhus University (= 117th)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Technical University of Denmark (DTU) (= 166th)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Aalborg University (201-250 range)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Copenhagen Business School (251-300 range)<\/li>\r\n \t<li>University of Southern Denmark (251-300 range)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>Rollercoaster<\/h2>\r\nTHE is one of four rankings that the University of Copenhagen uses as a benchmark, with the others being the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shanghairanking.com\/rankings\/arwu\/2022\"> ARWU \u2014 Shanghai ranking<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topuniversities.com\/university-rankings\/world-university-rankings\/2023\">QS ranking<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leidenranking.com\/\">CWTS Leiden ranking <\/a>(see fact box top right).\r\n\r\nThe THE, in particular, has been a rollercoaster ride for the University of Copenhagen, with its rank wobbling back and forth from between 51st to 177th and back since 2010.\r\n\r\n1,799 universities from 104 countries and regions are included in the THE World University Rankings and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/world-university-rankings\/2023\/world-ranking\">full 2023 list can be seen here.<\/a>\r\n\r\nThe Times ranking draws on an analysis of research publications, citations, responses to an academic reputation survey, teaching environment, international outlook and industry links.\r\n\r\nBut vice director for research and innovation at UCPH Kim Brinckmann also reckons that the size of host countries plays a role in university's ranking placement.\r\n\r\n\u00bbThis ranking places a lot of weight on reputation in both education and research, where it is unclear who it is that is 'voting' on which universities, and where universities from smaller nations will typically be more challenged.
