It is not just the stuff of science fiction or dramatic movies. Synthetic biology (SynBio) is a major scientific breakthrough of the 21st century that everyone should be aware of. It is a growing field that combines biology and engineering to redesign and create new biological systems that can benefit society.<\/p>\n

Not just modifying what exists<\/h3>\n

While SynBio uses some of the same techniques as genetic engineering, it aims to do much more. Instead of just modifying existing organisms, synthetic biology builds new biological systems from the ground up. Scientists use components like genes and regulatory elements as building blocks, just like when the toy LEGO bricks are used to create structures.
