The Atlantics – Bambora

[video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9u_CttIV7VY width:432 height:324 align:center]

Surf-rock music originates from the West Coast in the USA from the 1960’s. Later it became widely popular mainly by Dick Dale & The Del-Tones. The beach, the sun, California, and beach babes are the most recurrent topics. The Australian band, The Atlantics released ‘Bambora’ in 1963 and the song was a great success. Bambora is the name given by the aborigines to a special kind of waves.

8. Dr. John – Revolution

[video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guUN-5Xpdt0&ob=av2n width:432 height:324 align:center]

72 year old Malcolm John ‘Mac’ Rebennack (alias Dr. John) still has an incredible energy despite his age. He proves his energy in his latest album ‘Locked Down’ released last January. ‘Revolution’ is a sparkling song, full of liveliness with a groovy rhythm driven by a palette of blues and rock instruments.

7. Air – Alpha Beta Gaga

[video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au5sadJFSYk&ob=av2e width:432 height:324 align:center]

The reputation of Air is well-established after they joined the French-electronic touch movement. Multi-instrumentalists, Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin managed to export the band abroad, after having composed the soundtrack of Virgin Suicides by Sofia Coppola in 1999. ‘Alpha Beta Gaga’ is a song from the album ‘Talkie Walkie’ released in 2004.

6. Kenneth Bager – Fragment Eight – The Sound of Swing ft. Aloe Blacc

[video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9b91x0yaAw&feature=related width:432 height:324 align:center]

Danish producer and DJ, Kenneth Bager launched the independent label ‘Music For Dreams’ in 2001 after making an international name for himself as DJ Dr. Baker in the late 80’s and 90’s. He is known for crazy, colourful costumes, COMA (Copenhagen Offers More Action) parties and introducing acid House music to Denmark. ‘Fragment Eight’ is originally from his solo album ‘Fragments of a Space Cadet’ released in 2006, but has had an international re-release in 2011 as ‘The Sound of Swing’ on his album ‘The Kenneth Bager Experience’. It has been a huge success and is featured in many international compilations and adverts.

5. Hot Chip – Night & Day

[video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxg2JbWA7Nk width:432 height:324 align:center]

The English synthpop duo has released their fifth album on June 11, 2012 called ‘In Our Heads’. The hit song ‘Night & Day’ is the first single from the album and already recognized as the official alternative dance single of the summer. The group traded the pop influences in this song for a dancing style that is perfectly suited for electronic nightclubs. Get ready for the dancefloor, as this summer will be hot, by night and by day too!

4. Aline – Je Bois et Puis je Danse

[video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wunJzzoT-Tc width:432 height:324 align:center]

The song is taken from the eponymous EP released by Aline on May 14 2012. He provides a romantic pop that evokes British pop from the 80’s (Morrissey, Orange Juice) although the singer comes from France. The song ‘Je Bois et Puis je Danse’ (translated from French meaning ‘I drink and then I dance’) conjures up emotions of a passionate lover after having had a bit too much to drink on a summer evening.

3. Vivaldi – Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op 8, RV 315 “L’estate” (Summer)

[video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuF4oYRktcA width:432 height:324 align:center]

The Quattro stagioni is the best-known masterpiece of Antonio Vivaldi composed in 1728 but well-known to the public only after the twentieth century. This track is taken from the third movement called “Presto”. It is very heavy and dynamic and evokes pictures of a severe thunderstorm. Summer is not always sunny for everyone.

2. Gramatik – So Much For Love

[video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C56h08hMLnM width:432 height:324 align:center]

The Slovenian beat-maker and producer, Gramatik became internationally famous for his creative and elaborately worked samples. The DJ showed a strong grasp of eclectism, moving smoothly in his albums between jazz, hip hop and even post-dubstep. “So Much For Love” is a sample from the Dee Edwards song “Why Can Not There Be Love” from 1972.

1. Twin Shadow – Five Seconds

[video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiC9XNQSxFQ&feature=branded width:432 height:324 align:center]

‘Five Seconds’ could easily have been a track released on Factory Records (Joy Division, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) with it’s old-synthesizer layers that send us nostalgic Moog waves. This track sends one’s thoughts to the end of summer with tons of great memories, and a reluctance to let the summer end shortly. ‘Five Seconds’ is the first single from the new Twin Shadow album, which will be released in July.

Do you prefer all the songs in one go? Listen to the whole playlist on our Youtube channel here.

Universitypost@adm.ku.dk

Like us on Facebook for features, guides and tips on upcoming events.
