The espionage case against Finnish professor Timo Kivim\u00e4ki threatens to have an adverse affect on the research carried out at the Department of Political Science.<\/p>\n

This is according to Head of Department Lars Bo Kaspersen who was interviewed for the department\u2019s website. His colleague, professor Timo Kivim\u00e4ki is charged under section 108 of the Danish Penal Code also referred to as the \u2018mild espionage section\u2019 for alleged spying for the Russians<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u00bbIt is profoundly regrettable for Kivim\u00e4ki and his family, and also for Danish research. It is unhealthy for research that you cannot uphold a knowledge sharing process, hold meetings and be in dialogue with people from embassies and the like. This is after all what gives researchers thier contacts, and a platform where they can meet people with the expertise,\u00ab he says.<\/p>\n

UCPH: No decision on Kivim\u00e4ki’s contract<\/h2>\n

Timo Kivim\u00e4ki was a part of the University of Copenhagen\u2019s Asian Dynamics Initiative. Lars Bo Kaspersen expects that if Kivim\u00e4ki is ultimately exonerated, he will be able to return to the department.<\/p>\n

As it happens, Timo Kivim\u00e4ki got a five months jail sentence Thursday at a lower court in Glostrup. He has not yet decided whether to appeal.<\/p>\n

According to the vice director of communication Jasper Steen Winkel, the University of Copenhagen will not take a decision on whether Timo Kivim\u00e4ki will be sacked until a final verdict has been given, the Danish section of this media reports.<\/p>\n

Rules of decorum<\/h2>\n

The University of Copenhagen can, if it chooses, use the so-called rules of decorum to terminate Timo Kivim\u00e4ki\u2019s contract.<\/p>\n

According to these rules, all civil servants must \u00bbconscientiously uphold the rules for his position. And in and outside his or her service, show themselves worthy of the esteem and trust that the position demands.\u00ab<\/p>\n

Kivim\u00e4ki has not had discussions with the University of Copenhagen over the future of his professorship, writes the Helsinki paper Helsinkin Sanomat.<\/p>\n

Kivim\u00e4ki ‘other job offers’<\/h2>\n

However, \u00bbI don\u2019t think that he can work here. Nobody is likely to want him\u00ab, Prosecutor Ole Weikop said, according to the Helsinki paper.<\/p>\n

Kivim\u00e4ki himself is already looking further afield.<\/p>\n

\u00bbI currently have five job offers from different parts of the world\u00ab, he says.<\/p>\n

His colleague, professor Timo Kivim\u00e4ki is charged under section 108 of the Danish Penal Code also referred to as the \u2018mild espionage section\u2019 for <a href=\"node\/14346\">alleged spying for the Russians<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt is profoundly regrettable for Kivim\u00e4ki and his family, and also for Danish research. It is unhealthy for research that you cannot uphold a knowledge sharing process, hold meetings and be in dialogue with people from embassies and the like. This is after all what gives researchers thier contacts, and a platform where they can meet people with the expertise,\u00ab he says.<\/p>\n<h2>UCPH: No decision on Kivim\u00e4ki’s contract<\/h2>\n<p>Timo Kivim\u00e4ki was a part of the University of Copenhagen\u2019s Asian Dynamics Initiative. Lars Bo Kaspersen expects that if Kivim\u00e4ki is ultimately exonerated, he will be able to return to the department.<\/p>\n<p>As it happens, Timo Kivim\u00e4ki got a five months jail sentence Thursday at a lower court in Glostrup. He has not yet decided whether to appeal.<\/p>\n<p>According to the vice director of communication Jasper Steen Winkel, the University of Copenhagen will not take a decision on whether Timo Kivim\u00e4ki will be sacked until a final verdict has been given, the Danish section of this media reports.<\/p>\n<h2>Rules of decorum<\/h2>\n<p>The University of Copenhagen can, if it chooses, use the so-called rules of decorum to terminate Timo Kivim\u00e4ki\u2019s contract.<\/p>\n<p>According to these rules, all civil servants must \u00bbconscientiously uphold the rules for his position. And in and outside his or her service, show themselves worthy of the esteem and trust that the position demands.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>Kivim\u00e4ki has not had discussions with the University of Copenhagen over the future of his professorship, writes the Helsinki paper Helsinkin Sanomat.<\/p>\n<h2>Kivim\u00e4ki ‘other job offers’<\/h2>\n<p>However, \u00bbI don\u2019t think that he can work here.
