{"id":176122,"date":"2025-04-28T04:53:38","date_gmt":"2025-04-28T02:53:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/kus-klimamaal-vakler-stigende-flyrejser-truer-groenne-ambitioner\/"},"modified":"2025-04-28T08:38:38","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T06:38:38","slug":"soaring-emissions-air-travel-threatens-university-of-copenhagens-climate-targets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/soaring-emissions-air-travel-threatens-university-of-copenhagens-climate-targets\/","title":{"rendered":"Soaring emissions: Air travel threatens University of Copenhagen\u2019s climate targets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The climate impact of air travel at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) has increased for the third consecutive year.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to <a href=\"https:\/\/pkunet-shared.ku.dk\/nyhedsrum\/nyheder\/sider\/nye-data-viser-bekymrende-tendens-i-kus-klimaftryk-fra-flyrejser.aspx\">new data<\/a> compiled as a part of a UCPH ambition to become a more sustainable university.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, university employees emitted an average of 1.21 tonnes of greenhouse gases per full-time staff equivalent (FTE) due to air travel \u2014 an 11 per cent increase over the year before.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/22666086\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><picture><img src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/22666086\/thumbnail\" class=\"\"  decoding=\"async\"  width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\" \/><\/picture><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>Although emissions are still below the 2018 baseline \u2014 which UCPH uses to measure its progress \u2014 the trend is a cause for concern, university management write on the university&#8217;s intranet KUnet.<\/p>\n<p>The trend will likely also mean that travel will not be able to contribute to the overall target of <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/koebenhavns-universitet-har-vedtaget-ny-klimamaalsaetning-ambitioest-siger-ekspert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">halving the climate footprint per full-time equivalent by 2030<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/22665466\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><picture><img src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/22665466\/thumbnail\" class=\"\"  decoding=\"async\"  width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\" \/><\/picture><\/noscript><\/div>\n<h3>Off track<\/h3>\n<p>The data show that 22 of the 58 UCPH units are not on course to meet 2030 targets. Only 24 of the units are on track, while 12 of them are technically in line with targets but have increasing emissions \u2014 something that in itself could signal trouble ahead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/danish-universities-are-missing-climate-targets-the-university-of-copenhagen-included\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Danish universities are missing climate targets \u2014\u00a0the University of Copenhagen included<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To address this, UCPH management has sent the new data to local managers, so they can monitor their unit\u2019s flight habits and discuss possible interventions.<\/p>\n<p>As can be seen in the two charts below, it is especially the long-haul flights that are problematic. While they make up a smaller share of total trips, they account for more than half of total greenhouse gas emissions from air transport for UCPH.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/22847295\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><picture><img src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/22847295\/thumbnail\" class=\"\"  decoding=\"async\"  width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\" \/><\/picture><\/noscript><\/div>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/22847131\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><picture><img src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/22847131\/thumbnail\" class=\"\"  decoding=\"async\"  width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\" \/><\/picture><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>A new feature of this year\u2019s analysis is that managers now also have access to the data of individuals. While they make up a smaller share of total trips, they account for more than half of total greenhouse gas emissions from air transport for UCPH.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/22847295\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/22847295\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/22847131\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/22847131\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>A new feature of this year\u2019s analysis is that managers now also have access to the data of individuals.
