Exchange Student at UCPH<\/p>\n

20-year-old Landon Hildebrandt is a Canadian student at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH). The University Post is following him over the course of his semester to get an insight into what it\u2019s like to be on exchange at UCPH. This is the second and final instalment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The sun is shining from a cloudless sky when the University Post meets up with Landon Hildebrandt in the central F\u00e6lledparken<\/em>. In two weeks time, he\u2019ll be heading home to Canada after four months on exchange in Copenhagen. When he first arrived in the city, he had a clear purpose: a student job, volunteer work, and plenty of bike rides. Not everything went according to plan, but he\u2019s gained a few experiences along the way.<\/p>\n

\u00bbComing here has made me appreciate things back home more \u2014 but I\u2019m also going to miss Copenhagen,\u00ab says Landon Hildebrandt, adding that it probably hasn\u2019t fully sunk in yet that it\u2019s almost over.<\/p>\n

Copenhagen is basically a beach town<\/h3>\n

You quickly fall into a routine. Even if you just got here \u2014 and are only here for a short time.<\/p>\n

\u00bbAt first, I was really good at exploring the city, and I kept discovering new places. But my friends and I quickly found our regular spots, and the exploring kind of got put on hold.\u00ab<\/p>\n

Recently though, Landon Hildebrandt has once again begun venturing out into new corners of Copenhagen, thanks in part to the arrival of summer \u2014 and friends visiting who wanted to see the city for the first time.<\/p>\n

New sides of Copenhagen have emerged:<\/p>\n

\u00bbI actually hadn\u2019t thought of Copenhagen as a beach town, but lately I\u2019ve had so many lovely days just lying by the water.\u00ab<\/p>\n

His new regular hangouts are on the harbour front at Islands Brygge<\/em> and at La Banchina<\/em> in the Refshale\u00f8en <\/em>quarter. And if the day hasn\u2019t been spent by the water, it\u2019s likely been in the F\u00e6lledparken<\/em>, where he\u2019s been soaking up the June sun on the open lawns.<\/p>\n

Volunteering at the bike workshop<\/h3>\n

\u00bbWhen I look back on my study abroad, it\u2019ll probably be the time I spent with my friends that stands out most clearly.\u00ab<\/p>\n

Landon Hildebrandt quickly became part of a close-knit group of friends who became a key support throughout his stay. The group consists mainly of North Americans \u2014 plus one Finn. They met a few weeks into the semester and have spent most of their time together ever since. They\u2019ve already made plans to reunite in August \u2014 in New York.
\n
\nLandon Hildebrandt had hoped to find a job at a wine bar in Copenhagen, but gave up after a while. Work could wait, he decided. Instead, he chose to prioritise experiences. In addition to the sunny days in Copenhagen, he has travelled around Europe with stops in Amsterdam, Portugal, Barcelona, and Gothenburg. He came to Copenhagen because of his love for cycling, and he has explored the city\u2019s bike lanes, played basketball, and volunteered at a bike workshop in Folkets Park<\/em> in the N\u00f8rrebro district, where he helped people with repairs.<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt\u2019s a really cool place and a great way to get to know the locals. There are all kinds of people among the volunteers.\u00ab<\/p>\n

The volunteer work gave Landon Hildebrandt the chance to tinker with both other people\u2019s bikes and his own, so he could get ready for a major cycling trip through Europe. Together with a friend, he\u2019s planning to end his exchange with a bang. The plan is to cycle from Prague to Nice, with a stop in Venice along the way.
\n<\/p>\n

Not enough to do at university<\/h3>\n

In other words, a lot of time has gone into friends, bikes and sunshine. But of course, some of the time has also been dedicated to studying. Among the courses Landon Hildebrandt took, it was the Danish film history class that stood out as his favourite.<\/p>\n

\u00bbI\u2019m really into film, but I didn\u2019t know anything about Danish cinema before, so I\u2019ve actually learned a lot.\u00ab<\/p>\n

It\u2019s especially the Danish ‘Dogma 95’ filmmaking movement that caught Landon Hildebrandt\u2019s attention. He highlights the films Italian for Beginners, Tree of Knowledge<\/em>, and The Celebration<\/em> as some of the top picks on his new list of favourite films.<\/p>\n

\u00bbI ended up writing about The Celebration<\/em> for my final exam. And now I\u2019ve got a whole list of Danish films I want to watch.\u00ab<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve had too much free time and have sometimes missed having more structure in my daily life.<\/p>\n

Landon Hildebrandt<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Even though he\u2019s enjoyed the teaching, it hasn\u2019t played a particularly big role for him this semester. At times, he\u2019s almost had too little to do. At his home university, semesters are packed with assignments and midterms, but at UCPH, he\u2019s found that the real academic workload only kicked in towards the end of term.<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt\u2019s been great having time for things beyond school here. But I also think I\u2019ve had too much free time and have sometimes missed having more structure in my daily life,\u00ab he says, and elaborates:<\/p>\n

\u00bbI miss feeling like a student. Spending a lot of time on my studies gives me a sense of academic pride. And that\u2019s been a bit hard to hold on to here.\u00ab<\/p>\n

At times, Landon Hildebrandt has felt guilty about not having more to do. He\u2019s had days where he slept through the morning and stayed in bed for the rest of the day on his phone, because there was nothing to get up for:<\/p>\n

\u00bbIt\u2019s fine for a short while, but it becomes too much in the long run, when it turns into a daily thing. I prefer when there\u2019s something going on.\u00ab<\/p>\n

Three tips for exchange students<\/h3>\n

Even though it\u2019s not easy to make friends in Copenhagen, Landon Hildebrandt met most of his friend group in the city through people back home in Canada who knew someone who knew someone going on exchange to Copenhagen. If he had one piece of advice for future exchange students, it would be to use your network actively to find friends and acquaintances in the place you\u2019re heading to.<\/p>\n

\u00bbMy second piece of advice would be to travel less. Copenhagen is an amazing city too, so it\u2019s a shame not to make the most of your time here.\u00ab
\n
\nMany exchange students, according to Landon Hildebrandt, travel nearly every weekend during their stay abroad, as it\u2019s a unique opportunity to explore a new part of the world \u2014 especially if you\u2019ve come from far away.<\/p>\n

\u00bbBut I think the most important thing is to enjoy the place you\u2019re in and get as much out of it as possible.\u00ab<\/p>\n

One final piece of advice from Landon Hildebrandt is to do volunteer work. In addition to his time at the bike workshop, he\u2019s also volunteered at Copenhagen Dox and at \u00d8stergro \u2014 an urban rooftop farm on \u00d8sterbro.<\/p>\n

\u00bbVolunteering gave me much of the structure I had otherwise been missing. It\u2019s a great way to meet locals and get a sense of what\u2019s going on in the city \u2014 and it feels good to be doing something positive.\u00ab<\/p>\n

UCPH could do better<\/h3>\n

Landon Hildebrandt found that it was often up to him to make friends in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n

\u00bbUCPH could definitely do a better job of welcoming exchange students. I didn\u2019t feel like there were many opportunities to meet new people.\u00ab<\/p>\n

Overall, the exchange experience hasn\u2019t been without its bumps. But Landon Hildebrandt feels he\u2019s grown from it. The many new experiences have boosted his confidence and self-belief.<\/p>\n

\u00bbBeing in a foreign country, facing all kinds of new situations and having to stand on your own two feet \u2014 it makes me feel a lot more grown-up now.\u00ab<\/p>\n

He\u2019s left with mixed feelings. He\u2019s looking forward to getting back to his daily life and his friends, but he\u2019ll also miss the places and friendships he\u2019s come to know in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n

\u00bbI catch myself regretting that I didn\u2019t meet these people a few months earlier, or discover this place much sooner \u2014 because now time\u2019s just run out.\u00ab<\/p>\n

Luckily, there\u2019s only one thing to do \u2014 and it\u2019s definitely on the agenda, he says:<\/p>\n

The University Post is following him over the course of his semester to get an insight into what it\u2019s like to be on exchange at UCPH. This is the second and final instalment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The sun is shining from a cloudless sky when the University Post meets up with Landon Hildebrandt in the central <em>F\u00e6lledparken<\/em>. In two weeks time, he\u2019ll be heading home to Canada after four months on exchange in Copenhagen. When he first arrived in the city, he had a clear purpose: a student job, volunteer work, and plenty of bike rides. Even if you just got here \u2014 and are only here for a short time.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbAt first, I was really good at exploring the city, and I kept discovering new places. But my friends and I quickly found our regular spots, and the exploring kind of got put on hold.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>Recently though, Landon Hildebrandt has once again begun venturing out into new corners of Copenhagen, thanks in part to the arrival of summer \u2014 and friends visiting who wanted to see the city for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>New sides of Copenhagen have emerged:<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbI actually hadn\u2019t thought of Copenhagen as a beach town, but lately I\u2019ve had so many lovely days just lying by the water.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>His new regular hangouts are on the harbour front at <em>Islands Brygge<\/em> and at <em>La Banchina<\/em> in the <em>Refshale\u00f8en <\/em>quarter. And if the day hasn\u2019t been spent by the water, it\u2019s likely been in the <em>F\u00e6lledparken<\/em>, where he\u2019s been soaking up the June sun on the open lawns.<\/p>\n<h3>Volunteering at the bike workshop<\/h3>\n<p>\u00bbWhen I look back on my study abroad, it\u2019ll probably be the time I spent with my friends that stands out most clearly.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>Landon Hildebrandt quickly became part of a close-knit group of friends who became a key support throughout his stay. The group consists mainly of North Americans \u2014 plus one Finn. They met a few weeks into the semester and have spent most of their time together ever since. Work could wait, he decided. Instead, he chose to prioritise experiences. In addition to the sunny days in Copenhagen, he has travelled around Europe with stops in Amsterdam, Portugal, Barcelona, and Gothenburg. He came to Copenhagen because of his love for cycling, and he has explored the city\u2019s bike lanes, played basketball, and volunteered at a bike workshop in <em>Folkets Park<\/em> in the N\u00f8rrebro district, where he helped people with repairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt\u2019s a really cool place and a great way to get to know the locals. There are all kinds of people among the volunteers.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>The volunteer work gave Landon Hildebrandt the chance to tinker with both other people\u2019s bikes and his own, so he could get ready for a major cycling trip through Europe. Together with a friend, he\u2019s planning to end his exchange with a bang. The plan is to cycle from Prague to Nice, with a stop in Venice along the way.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"Content","content":"<h3>Not enough to do at university<\/h3>\n<p>In other words, a lot of time has gone into friends, bikes and sunshine. But of course, some of the time has also been dedicated to studying. Among the courses Landon Hildebrandt took, it was the Danish film history class that stood out as his favourite.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbI\u2019m really into film, but I didn\u2019t know anything about Danish cinema before, so I\u2019ve actually learned a lot.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s especially the Danish ‘Dogma 95’ filmmaking movement that caught Landon Hildebrandt\u2019s attention. He highlights the films <em>Italian for Beginners, Tree of Knowledge<\/em>, and <em>The Celebration<\/em> as some of the top picks on his new list of favourite films.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbI ended up writing about <em>The Celebration<\/em> for my final exam. And now I\u2019ve got a whole list of Danish films I want to watch.\u00ab<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I\u2019ve had too much free time and have sometimes missed having more structure in my daily life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"quotee\">Landon Hildebrandt<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Even though he\u2019s enjoyed the teaching, it hasn\u2019t played a particularly big role for him this semester. At times, he\u2019s almost had too little to do. At his home university, semesters are packed with assignments and midterms, but at UCPH, he\u2019s found that the real academic workload only kicked in towards the end of term.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt\u2019s been great having time for things beyond school here. But I also think I\u2019ve had too much free time and have sometimes missed having more structure in my daily life,\u00ab he says, and elaborates:<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbI miss feeling like a student. Spending a lot of time on my studies gives me a sense of academic pride. And that\u2019s been a bit hard to hold on to here.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>At times, Landon Hildebrandt has felt guilty about not having more to do. He\u2019s had days where he slept through the morning and stayed in bed for the rest of the day on his phone, because there was nothing to get up for:<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt\u2019s fine for a short while, but it becomes too much in the long run, when it turns into a daily thing. I prefer when there\u2019s something going on.\u00ab<\/p>\n<h3>Three tips for exchange students<\/h3>\n<p>Even though it\u2019s not easy to make friends in Copenhagen, Landon Hildebrandt met most of his friend group in the city through people back home in Canada who knew someone who knew someone going on exchange to Copenhagen. If he had one piece of advice for future exchange students, it would be to use your network actively to find friends and acquaintances in the place you\u2019re heading to.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbMy second piece of advice would be to travel less. In addition to his time at the bike workshop, he\u2019s also volunteered at Copenhagen Dox and at \u00d8stergro \u2014 an urban rooftop farm on \u00d8sterbro.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbVolunteering gave me much of the structure I had otherwise been missing. It\u2019s a great way to meet locals and get a sense of what\u2019s going on in the city \u2014 and it feels good to be doing something positive.\u00ab<\/p>\n<h3>UCPH could do better<\/h3>\n<p>Landon Hildebrandt found that it was often up to him to make friends in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbUCPH could definitely do a better job of welcoming exchange students. I didn\u2019t feel like there were many opportunities to meet new people.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the exchange experience hasn\u2019t been without its bumps. But Landon Hildebrandt feels he\u2019s grown from it. The many new experiences have boosted his confidence and self-belief.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbBeing in a foreign country, facing all kinds of new situations and having to stand on your own two feet \u2014 it makes me feel a lot more grown-up now.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s left with mixed feelings. He\u2019s looking forward to getting back to his daily life and his friends, but he\u2019ll also miss the places and friendships he\u2019s come to know in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbI catch myself regretting that I didn\u2019t meet these people a few months earlier, or discover this place much sooner \u2014 because now time\u2019s just run out.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, there\u2019s only one
