The annual diversity celebration Copenhagen Pride is taking place again, this time 9 to 17 August, and the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) is joining it this year also.<\/p>\n

Throughout the week, UCPH will host a number of events to mark and celebrate the fact that diversity and inclusion remain important values at the university.<\/p>\n

\u00bbWe want all students and staff to feel welcome and included at UCPH. And that\u2019s what we celebrate when we join Pride under the banner Diversity of Copenhagen<\/em>,\u00ab says Bente Stallknecht, who, in addition to being Dean of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, is also UCPH\u2019s strategic sponsor for diversity, equality and inclusion.<\/p>\n

Defying Trump<\/h3>\n

Several UCPH research projects that include the words \u2018gender\u2019 or \u2018diversity\u2019 and that are funded by US research grants have now been shut down, as the Trump administration withdrew support as part of its campaign against woke culture.<\/p>\n

You might ask whether it\u2019s bold of UCPH to openly brandish Diversity of Copenhagen<\/em> and rainbow colours.<\/p>\n

Not according to Bente Stallknecht. She points out that UCPH marched under the same slogan last year and remains committed to continuing on this path.<\/p>\n

\u00bbOf course, it\u2019s unfortunate when research projects are shut down, as it has serious consequences for those involved. But we\u2019re in Denmark, where we value the opportunity to celebrate academic freedom and diversity. So we\u2019re holding our course \u2014 unaffected by what\u2019s happening in the US.\u00ab<\/p>\n

Bente Stallknecht adds that international staff and students in particular seem to appreciate the university\u2019s visible commitment to diversity in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n

Politicised Pride<\/h3>\n

Several major companies withdrew their support for Copenhagen Pride last year, citing the event\u2019s increasing politicisation<\/a> due to its explicit pro-Palestinian stance on the war in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Aarhus University withdrew from Aarhus Pride<\/a> in May this year, stating that the institution did not want to be seen endorsing unrelated political positions.<\/p>\n

According to Bente Stallknecht, the politicisation of Pride does not affect the University of Copenhagen\u2019s participation.<\/p>\n

\u00bbWe\u2019ve marched in Pride for many years \u2014 it\u2019s a regular event, and we\u2019re continuing to do it. This theme has always been political, and what\u2019s happening in the US now only underlines that. But at the University of Copenhagen, everyone should feel at home, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re celebrating with Pride,\u00ab she says, adding that she herself will also be walking in the parade under UCPH\u2019s rainbow banners.<\/p>\n

What to expect during Pride Week<\/h3>\n

You don’t have to identify as LGBTQIA+ \u2014 an abbreviation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, with the + signifying inclusivity towards additional identities: You are still welcome at UCPH events during Pride Week.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday morning, 12 August, sociologist Stine Marsal will host a webinar on what it means to be yourself in the workplace \u2014 and how you can contribute to genuine inclusion. As the organisers put it, this is your chance to learn everything your LGBTQIA+ fellow students and colleagues wish you already knew.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday afternoon, 13 August, the symposium Research Under the Rainbow<\/em> will take place, where UCPH researchers and students will present current thesis and research projects within LGBTQIA+ topics.<\/p>\n

\u00bbWe want to offer fresh inspiration on how students and staff can contribute to efforts in this field. At the same time, UCPH hosts a wide range of academic disciplines \u2014 from humanities to science \u2014 where the research itself has an LGBTQIA+ perspective. It makes perfect sense to spotlight this research during Pride Week, with presentations from students and researchers at various stages of their careers,\u00ab says Bente Stallknecht.<\/p>\n

On Saturday 16 August, UCPH will join the main parade, filling the streets of Copenhagen with glitter and good vibes. As a warm-up, everyone is invited to a communal breakfast in the morning.<\/p>\n

Copenhagen Pride\u2019s history stretches back to the 1970s, and from a university perspective, there\u2019s no doubt about the importance of taking part in the movement.<\/p>\n

At the University of Copenhagen, you should be able to see yourself reflected in the people who research, teach, and communicate new knowledge. And at the end of the UCPH rainbow, you\u2019ll find better education and better research, says Bente Stallknecht.<\/p>\n

taking place again, this time 9 to 17 August, and the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) is joining it this year also.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the week, UCPH will host a number of events to mark and celebrate the fact that diversity and inclusion remain important values at the university.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbWe want all students and staff to feel welcome and included at UCPH. And that\u2019s what we celebrate when we join Pride under the banner <em>Diversity of Copenhagen<\/em>,\u00ab says Bente Stallknecht, who, in addition to being Dean of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, is also UCPH\u2019s strategic sponsor for diversity, equality and inclusion.<\/p>\n<h3>Defying Trump<\/h3>\n<p>Several UCPH research projects that include the words \u2018gender\u2019 or \u2018diversity\u2019 and that are funded by US research grants have now been shut down, as the Trump administration withdrew support as part of its campaign against woke culture.<\/p>\n<p>You might ask whether it\u2019s bold of UCPH to openly brandish <em>Diversity of Copenhagen<\/em> and rainbow colours.<\/p>\n<p>Not according to Bente Stallknecht. She points out that UCPH marched under the same slogan last year and remains committed to continuing on this path.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbOf course, it\u2019s unfortunate when research projects are shut down, as it has serious consequences for those involved. But we\u2019re in Denmark, where we value the opportunity to celebrate academic freedom and diversity. So we\u2019re holding our course \u2014 unaffected by what\u2019s happening in the US.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>Bente Stallknecht adds that international staff and students in particular seem to appreciate the university\u2019s visible commitment to diversity in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<h3>Politicised Pride<\/h3>\n<p>Several major companies withdrew their support for Copenhagen Pride last year, citing the event\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/politiken.dk\/danmark\/art9888238\/M%C3%A6rsk-Novo-Nordisk-og-Dansk-Industri-tr%C3%A6kker-st%C3%B8tten-til-Copenhagen-Pride-p%C3%A5-grund-af-%C2%BBpolitisering%C2%AB-om-Gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increasing politicisation<\/a> due to its explicit pro-Palestinian stance on the war in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Aarhus University <a href=\"https:\/\/omnibus.au.dk\/arkiv\/vis\/artikel\/au-og-aarhus-pride\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">withdrew from Aarhus Pride<\/a> in May this year, stating that the institution did not want to be seen endorsing unrelated political positions.<\/p>\n<p>According to Bente Stallknecht, the politicisation of Pride does not affect the University of Copenhagen\u2019s participation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbWe\u2019ve marched in Pride for many years \u2014 it\u2019s a regular event, and we\u2019re continuing to do it. This theme has always been political, and what\u2019s happening in the US now only underlines that. As the organisers put it, this is your chance to learn everything your LGBTQIA+ fellow students and colleagues wish you already knew.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday afternoon, 13 August, the symposium <em>Research Under the Rainbow<\/em> will take place, where UCPH researchers and students will present current thesis and research projects within LGBTQIA+ topics.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbWe want to offer fresh inspiration on how students and staff can contribute to efforts in this field. At the same time, UCPH hosts a wide range of academic disciplines \u2014 from humanities to science \u2014 where the research itself has an LGBTQIA+ perspective. It makes perfect sense to spotlight this research during Pride Week, with presentations from students and researchers at various stages of their careers,\u00ab says Bente Stallknecht.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday 16 August, UCPH will join the main parade, filling the streets of Copenhagen with glitter and good vibes. As a warm-up, everyone is invited to a communal breakfast in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>Copenhagen Pride\u2019s history stretches back to the 1970s, and from a university perspective, there\u2019s no doubt about the importance of taking part in the movement.<\/p>\n<p>At the University of Copenhagen, you should be able to see yourself reflected in the people who research, teach, and communicate new knowledge.
