Danes are aloof ","use_post_excerpt":false},{"acf_fc_layout":"Byline","is_author":false,"contributors":[{"use_registered_user":false,"user":false,"contributor_name":"Mike Young","contributor_title":" ","contributor_image":false}]},{"acf_fc_layout":"Content","content":"<p>Most international students who come to Denmark to study return home as soon as they are qualified, more often than not because they are lonely and consider their Danish counterparts \u2018cold\u2019, or often \u2018aloof\u2019, writes Seven59.dk and B.dk.<\/p>\n<p>In a new survey by the Ungdommens Analyse Enhed (UAE) (Youth Analysis Unit) 22-year old Ana Gomes from Portugal was just one of many who felt that Danes just aren\u2019t that \u2018open\u2019 towards foreign students. <\/p>\n<p>Mads Engholm, senior consultant at UAE, says it\u2019s fairly obvious that people won\u2019t stay in a place where they don\u2019t feel part of the community. <\/p>\n<h2>Confirms previous studies<\/h2>\n<p>The study <a href=\"node\/8447\">is in line with earlier research,<\/a> such as one into expatriates by the Oxford research group. Here 71 per cent of the foreigners who originally <em>believed<\/em> they would stay more than three years, do not actually stay. The study showed that Danes’ unfriendliness and lack of welcoming behaviour was a factor.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"node\/9081\">sub-section of this study was of international staff <\/a><br \/>\nat the University of Copenhagen. Here Denmark scored highly on personal safety, infrastructure and overall quality of life, but the possibilities for meeting Danes or even other expats did not live up to expectations. <\/p>\n<p>41 per cent rated the openness of the Danes as either \u2018less good\u2019 or \u2018not good\u2019 in this study.<\/p>\n<h2>Denmark needs the manpower<\/h2>\n<p>For the latest study, Mads Engholm of UAE warns that in the long run it\u2019s going to be expensive for Denmark because as soon as the crisis is over there\u2019s going to be a need for highly-qualified manpower. <\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt\u2019s a waste of resources to see so many bright young people leave the country.
