Danes have to get used to cuts and rising unemployment in the year to come, Helle Thorning-Schmidt said New Year’s Day, Seven59.dk and Berlingske.dk reports. <\/p>\n
Emphasising \u2018solidarity\u2019 as the key word for Danish society, Thorning began the annual Prime Minister\u2019s New Year speech by promising that her government will review every part of the economy to see how things can be improved. <\/p>\n
\u00bbEverybody has to ask themselves \u2018what can I do\u2019 instead of \u2018what can I get\u2019. People are offended when they see others who aren\u2019t making an effort, or even cheating the system. Everybody has to contribute. There\u2019s no free ride,\u00ab the Prime Minister stated. <\/p>\n
Political commentator and former Conservative leader Hans Engell dismissed the Prime Minister\u2019s speech as \u00bbcompletely void of any political vision\u00ab. <\/p>\n
\u00bbInstead of presenting any concrete solutions to Denmark\u2019s problems she was content to paint a picture of a country in crisis. But what\u2019s she going to do about it?\u00ab Engell questioned.<\/p>\n
In her speech Helle Thorning-Schmidt briefly mentioned that social benefits, pensions for invalids, and the tax structure will be reformed in a major effort to get more people into the labour market and make the economy more robust. <\/p>\n
