
{"id":2123,"date":"2016-12-19T10:02:36","date_gmt":"2016-12-19T09:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/?p=2123\/"},"modified":"2017-01-20T19:52:20","modified_gmt":"2017-01-20T19:52:20","slug":"blaesedalen-reveals-the-carbon-balance-in-the-arctic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/blaesedalen-reveals-the-carbon-balance-in-the-arctic\/","title":{"rendered":"Bl\u00e6sedalen reveals the carbon balance in the Arctic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If a deep permafrost on the ground in the Arctic dries out due to global warming, will it release greenhouse gas CO2 into the atmosphere by uncovering the huge volumes of organic carbon beneath?  <\/p>\n<p>Will it eventually release catastrophic volumes of CO2, so much that the attempt to limit global warming to an acceptable level will become pointless \u2013 with catastrophic temperature increases and climate changes to follow? <\/p>\n<p>On a slice of the tundra, a few kilometres east of the Arctic Station on Disko Island in West Greenland, researchers from the Center for Permafrost from the University of Copenhagen are attempting to find out the answer. <\/p>\n<p>The area lies in the glacial valley \u2018Bl\u00e6sedalen\u2019 which means \u2018Windy Valley\u2019 in Danish, thus called because the winds from the central part of Disko Island fall between the island\u2019s mountains and hurtle towards the sea via Bl\u00e6sedalen. The wind is almost always blazing here. <\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><picture><img src=\"\/old_files\/foto_-_groenland_julekalender_9.12_blaesedalen_sladrer_om_kulstofbalancen_i_arktis03_0.jpg\" class=\"\"  decoding=\"async\"  alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/picture><\/div>\n<p><em>A mini greenhouse and windbreakers simulate global warming<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Researchers use small, open, hexagonal greenhouses to investigate how Arctic plants and soils respond to climate change. Some organic material lies on the ground in the greenhouses, and researchers are investigating how much more of it will break down and emit CO2 when subject to an artificially increased temperature. <\/p>\n<p>They have also set up windbreakers \u2013 or snowbreakers\u2013 up in Bl\u00e6sedalen, which recreate the effect of winter. They catch snow drifts, which are directed downwards, increasing the temperature near the ground by a few degrees. It seems the breakdown of organic matter also happens in winter. <\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><picture><img src=\"\/old_files\/foto_-_groenland_julekalender_9.12_blaesedalen_sladrer_om_kulstofbalancen_i_arktis02_0.jpg\" class=\"\"  decoding=\"async\"  alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/picture><\/div>\n<p><em>Here is a windbreaker which has already created a little downward drift. ","use_post_excerpt":false},{"acf_fc_layout":"Byline","is_author":false,"contributors":[{"use_registered_user":false,"user":false,"contributor_name":"ANDERS FJELDBERG","contributor_title":"&nbsp;","contributor_image":false}]},{"acf_fc_layout":"Content","content":"<p>If a deep permafrost on the ground in the Arctic dries out due to global warming, will it release greenhouse gas CO2 into the atmosphere by uncovering the huge volumes of organic carbon beneath?  <\/p>\n<p>Will it eventually release catastrophic volumes of CO2, so much that the attempt to limit global warming to an acceptable level will become pointless \u2013 with catastrophic temperature increases and climate changes to follow? <\/p>\n<p>On a slice of the tundra, a few kilometres east of the Arctic Station on Disko Island in West Greenland, researchers from the Center for Permafrost from the University of Copenhagen are attempting to find out the answer. <\/p>\n<p>The area lies in the glacial valley \u2018Bl\u00e6sedalen\u2019 which means \u2018Windy Valley\u2019 in Danish, thus called because the winds from the central part of Disko Island fall between the island\u2019s mountains and hurtle towards the sea via Bl\u00e6sedalen. The wind is almost always blazing here. <\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/old_files\/foto_-_groenland_julekalender_9.12_blaesedalen_sladrer_om_kulstofbalancen_i_arktis03_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/div>\n<p><em>A mini greenhouse and windbreakers simulate global warming<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Researchers use small, open, hexagonal greenhouses to investigate how Arctic plants and soils respond to climate change. Some organic material lies on the ground in the greenhouses, and researchers are investigating how much more of it will break down and emit CO2 when subject to an artificially increased temperature. <\/p>\n<p>They have also set up windbreakers \u2013 or snowbreakers\u2013 up in Bl\u00e6sedalen, which recreate the effect of winter. They catch snow drifts, which are directed downwards, increasing the temperature near the ground by a few degrees. It seems the breakdown of organic matter also happens in winter. <\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/old_files\/foto_-_groenland_julekalender_9.12_blaesedalen_sladrer_om_kulstofbalancen_i_arktis02_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/div>\n<p><em>Here is a windbreaker which has already created a little downward drift.
