
{"id":24331,"date":"2009-11-05T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-05T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/?p=24331\/"},"modified":"2017-01-21T06:35:50","modified_gmt":"2017-01-21T06:35:50","slug":"humanities-and-social-sciences-are-self-obsessed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/humanities-and-social-sciences-are-self-obsessed\/","title":{"rendered":"Humanities and social sciences are self-obsessed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The humanities and social sciences are rife with narcissism and are obsessed with novelty over substance, say delegates at a recent academic conference in Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to the British news site Timeshighereducation.com. <\/p>\n<p><em>\u00bbHighly competitive, image-oriented, substance-avoiding, ultra-innovative, quotation-obsessed individualists.\u00ab<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With these less than flattering words, Sasa Bozic, associate professor of sociology at the University of Zadar, Croatia, describes his peers.<\/p>\n<h2>Obsessed with novelty<\/h2>\n<p>Bozic and other attendees at the &#8216;Future of the Humanities and Social Sciences&#8217; conference criticise the \u00bbconstant search for novelty\u00ab which has overshadowed scholary substance in research, and devalued work which confirms existing knowlege. <\/p>\n<p>Bozic claims that this has made it difficult for the arts and social sciences to build a solid body of knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>The result is that, \u00bbtheories in the social sciences cannot predict much and their explanatory power is decreasing constantly,\u00abhe says.<\/p>\n<h2>Academic suicide<\/h2>\n<p>Elizabeth Sundin, professor in business administration and management at Linkoping University, Sweden, fears that \u00bbthe suicide of the social sciences\u00ab is looming. <\/p>\n<p>She feels that for research to be useful, it must reflect the complexities of the social world. <\/p>\n<p>However, international journals often demanded \u00bbone single score and conclusion in each article\u00ab, and this decreases the relevancy and legitimacy of research results, she says.  <\/p>\n<h2>Communication is key<\/h2>\n<p>As well as airing their criticisms, the conference guests look to the future. <\/p>\n<p>Philippe Keraudren, scientific officer for the SSH-Futures project at the European Commission&#8217;s Directorate-General for Research, is of the opinion that the circulation of social science and humanities results and knowledge within Europe is key.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, how to communicate was a hot topic, especially for Allan Janik, senior research fellow at the University of Innsbruck, Austria.<\/p>\n<h2>Fails to address &#8216;distressed mankind&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>While the humanities ought to aspire to wisdom,  many academics \u00bbdon&#8217;t rise to the challenge, and address their peers rather than distressed mankind\u00ab, leaving the non-academic world to \u00bbfall back on &#8216;how-to&#8217; books\u00ab, he says.<\/p>\n<p>The conference  was organised by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Comparative Research in the Social Sciences (ICCR) in Vienna.<\/p>\n<p>Its aim was to discuss how the Social Sciences and the Humanities can better equip themselves to match the current and future needs of society. <\/p>\n<p>Read the full report from the conference <a href=\"http:\/\/www.univie.ac.at\/soziologieblog\/wp-content\/future-of-social-sciences-and-humanities.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">  here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>luci@adm.ku.dk<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scholars sound the alarm at Brussels conference, saying that the arts and social sciences are on the road to destruction due to self-promotion and lack of academic substance<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":24333,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"_uf_show_specific_survey":0,"_uf_disable_surveys":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[45],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-24331","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-international","expression-news_article"],"acf":[],"aioseo_notices":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 - conference criticise the \u00bbconstant search for novelty\u00ab which has overshadowed scholary substance in research, and devalued work which confirms existing knowlege. <\/p>\n<p>Bozic claims that this has made it difficult for the arts and social sciences to build a solid body of knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>The result is that, \u00bbtheories in the social sciences cannot predict much and their explanatory power is decreasing constantly,\u00abhe says.<\/p>\n<h2>Academic suicide<\/h2>\n<p>Elizabeth Sundin, professor in business administration and management at Linkoping University, Sweden, fears that \u00bbthe suicide of the social sciences\u00ab is looming. <\/p>\n<p>She feels that for research to be useful, it must reflect the complexities of the social world. <\/p>\n<p>However, international journals often demanded \u00bbone single score and conclusion in each article\u00ab, and this decreases the relevancy and legitimacy of research results, she says.  <\/p>\n<h2>Communication is key<\/h2>\n<p>As well as airing their criticisms, the conference guests look to the future. <\/p>\n<p>Philippe Keraudren, scientific officer for the SSH-Futures project at the European Commission&#8217;s Directorate-General for Research, is of the opinion that the circulation of social science and humanities results and knowledge within Europe is key.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, how to communicate was a hot topic, especially for Allan Janik, senior research fellow at the University of Innsbruck, Austria.<\/p>\n<h2>Fails to address &#8216;distressed mankind&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>While the humanities ought to aspire to wisdom,  many academics \u00bbdon&#8217;t rise to the challenge, and address their peers rather than distressed mankind\u00ab, leaving the non-academic world to \u00bbfall back on &#8216;how-to&#8217;
