
{"id":3401,"date":"2016-06-07T07:52:20","date_gmt":"2016-06-07T05:52:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/?p=3401\/"},"modified":"2017-01-20T20:41:08","modified_gmt":"2017-01-20T20:41:08","slug":"copenhagen-map-as-a-series-of-circles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/copenhagen-map-as-a-series-of-circles\/","title":{"rendered":"Copenhagen map as a series of circles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Archie Archambault&#8217;s idea came from getting lost in the city of Portland, USA as a philosophy student, according to an article in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_eye\/2013\/12\/02\/circular_city_maps_archie_archambault_designs_minimalist_city_maps_printed.html\" target=\"_blank\">Slate.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Google maps didn\u2019t give him the sense of a &#8216;neighborhood&#8217;, or how to navigate the city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was super absorbed in the GPS,\u201d he told Slate. &#8220;But a Google map has a scientific feel. I wanted to communicate the idea of a city on paper,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><picture><img src=\"\/old_files\/0001_0.jpg\" class=\"\"  decoding=\"async\"  alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/picture><\/div>\n<p><em>The neighbourhood of Frederiksberg in Copenhagen as seen by Archie Archambault \/Archies Press<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So he started drawing circles and quadrants and exploring streets to get an on-the-ground feel to the urban landscape. He drafted Copenhagen and other cities too, and teamed up with a Copenhagener  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bureauofbetterment.com\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mette<\/a>. On advice from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.athenas.dk\/kay-xander-mellish-foredrag-interkultur.htm?gclid=Cj0KEQjwhN-6BRCJsePgxru9iIwBEiQAI8rq8xDFf0m4RZyjuzA2tUiI0oI-oC3XVz3KJakPGQqOHnUaAil_8P8HAQ\" target=\"_blank\">Kay Xander Mellish <\/a> he put in the University of Copenhagen campuses too.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><picture><img src=\"\/old_files\/file-page1.jpg\" class=\"\"  decoding=\"async\"  alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/picture><\/div>\n<p><em>The City Centre of Copenhagen as visualised by Archie Archambault \/ courtesy of Archie Archambault \/Archies Press<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So what&#8217;s with all the circles?<\/em><br \/>\nAccording to Archie Archambault new research indicates that GPS&#8217;s are hindering our ability to create mental maps of our surroundings. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My maps aim to install a &#8216;Map from the Mind&#8217;, simplifying structures and neighborhoods in the most efficient and beautiful way. Maybe it is time to start thinking cities (like Copenhagen for example) in circles","use_post_excerpt":false},{"acf_fc_layout":"Byline","is_author":false,"contributors":[{"use_registered_user":false,"user":false,"contributor_name":"University Post newsroom","contributor_title":"&nbsp;","contributor_image":false}]},{"acf_fc_layout":"Content","content":"<p>Archie Archambault&#8217;s idea came from getting lost in the city of Portland, USA as a philosophy student, according to an article in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_eye\/2013\/12\/02\/circular_city_maps_archie_archambault_designs_minimalist_city_maps_printed.html\" target=\"_blank\">Slate.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Google maps didn\u2019t give him the sense of a &#8216;neighborhood&#8217;, or how to navigate the city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was super absorbed in the GPS,\u201d he told Slate. &#8220;But a Google map has a scientific feel. I wanted to communicate the idea of a city on paper,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/old_files\/0001_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/div>\n<p><em>The neighbourhood of Frederiksberg in Copenhagen as seen by Archie Archambault \/Archies Press<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So he started drawing circles and quadrants and exploring streets to get an on-the-ground feel to the urban landscape. He drafted Copenhagen and other cities too, and teamed up with a Copenhagener  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bureauofbetterment.com\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mette<\/a>. On advice from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.athenas.dk\/kay-xander-mellish-foredrag-interkultur.htm?gclid=Cj0KEQjwhN-6BRCJsePgxru9iIwBEiQAI8rq8xDFf0m4RZyjuzA2tUiI0oI-oC3XVz3KJakPGQqOHnUaAil_8P8HAQ\" target=\"_blank\">Kay Xander Mellish <\/a> he put in the University of Copenhagen campuses too.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/old_files\/file-page1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/div>\n<p><em>The City Centre of Copenhagen as visualised by Archie Archambault \/ courtesy of Archie Archambault \/Archies Press<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So what&#8217;s with all the circles?<\/em><br \/>\nAccording to Archie Archambault new research indicates that GPS&#8217;s are hindering our ability to create mental maps of our surroundings. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My maps aim to install a &#8216;Map from the Mind&#8217;, simplifying structures and neighborhoods in the most efficient and beautiful way.
