The Frederiksberg campus as it is now was completed in the mid-19th century and remains much the same, with a few minor additions and alterations.

»The campus was situated way outside of the city of Copenhagen, really way outside it – it was a farm area. Now it’s at the very center of big metropolis – it’s so fascinating,« says Knud Høgsberg, the Information Specialist at the SCIENCE Library on the Frederiksberg campus.

The economic boom

The Royal Veterinary School moved from Christianshavn to Frederiksberg and became the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in 1858.

At the time of its conception, the new campus at Frederiksberg was a huge success. There was enormous development and focus on agriculture in the period, and the campus continued to grow and thrive.

»There was so much focus from Danish authorities about how to make use of this university that focused on agriculture and agricultural development. It was the basis for much of the economic growth of the late 19th century and for many years to come,« says Høgsberg.

Italian inspiration

The campus, which was completed in 1858, was based on the plans of the celebrated architect Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll. The architecture was inspired by Italian country estates, as it was the fashion of art at the time to be inspired by history.

Although Bindesbøll completed his drawings of what he hoped the new campus would look like, he fatally collapsed just three weeks after delivering his design. The campus was constructed in accordance with his ideas, and the area in front of the main building remained a cultural haven for many years.

»There were ballets and cultural events in the courtyard. It was very nice,« remembers Høgsberg. The area is no longer used for cultural events.

Not much has changed about the old Landbohøjskolen main This was possible because the original prints of the ornate paintings had been kept safely in the National Museum.

The room looks so similar now than prior to its destruction that our photo reporter was able to capture almost an identical image, even though the actual room no longer exists. In fact, the room now looks more similar to the original than it did just prior to the explosion.

"There had been restorations done to the auditorium back in the 1970s, but they had used the wrong colors, and it was hopeless to be in the auditorium. After the explosion, the Pompeiian colors were back to the way they should have been" explains Information Specialist at the SCIENCE Library Knud Høgsberg.

The explosion

At 5:03 pm, 29 May in the year 2000, the entire auditorium exploded. Constructors were doing renovations in the main building on the Frederiksberg campus when someone forgot to turn off one of the gas tanks in an underground corridor.

Exams were taking place nearby, but luckily no one was injured.

"I wasn't there," recalls Høgsberg. "I had left in the afternoon and gone home, but I heard about it from some of my colleagues. From the noise, they knew something terrible had happened. In a split second, all this happened."

The artwork

The building's architect, Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll worked with artist Georg Christian Hilker to design the lecture hall. Both men had spent some time in Italy and were influenced by Italian estates. Pompeii had been excavated in the mid-18th century and was the inspiration for much of the art in the Frederiksberg campus and other buildings Hilker designed at the time.

The ceiling is flat, but it is painted in a way that creates an optical illusion. It is meant to look like a sail, and the blue is the sky peeking through. Painted on the sail are 32 varieties of Denmark's wild flora.

Hilker was responsible for the paintings in the main hall, except for the paintings of domesticated animals of the time, which were done by Andreas Peter Madsen. The paintings Danish domestic animals and give insight into how they evolved over time.

The restoration took three years and cost millions to rebuild.

The yard behind the lecture hall

When the UCPH campus in Frederiksberg was constructed in the late 1850s, most of the staff and their children lived on campus. According to Høgsberg, the children pictured are likely children of the staff who lived on campus.

The photo was likely taken shortly after the building’s construction, in the 1860s or 1870s, believes Høgsberg. At the times, horses were an integral part of daily life. “Horses were used for all transportation at the time; they were very important,” says Høgsberg.

The lawn the boys stand on was at one time a riding area, where horses were exercised. The sign next to them reads 'All passage over the riding arena prohibited' in Danish. The passage of time can be seen in the foliage. According to Knud Høgsberg, Information Specialist at the SCIENCE Library on the Frederiksberg campus, this type of drawing, which was done approximately 30 years after the building’s erection, was very common at the time. The new addition at the time of its construction, however, was met with much criticism from those who had fallen in love with Bindesbøll’s work.

»It was a more economic building, and people at the time weren’t happy,« explains Høgsberg.

Connecting the two buildings

Because of the huge success and economic contribution of the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University to Danish society in the mid to late 1800s, it was decided that the main building constructed in 1856-1858 should be doubled in size. Between 1892 and 1895, a new building was erected in front of Bindesbøll’s original main building by architect Johannes Emil Gnudtzmann.

The two buildings are joined, creating a courtyard in the center where cultural events used to take place. If you look closely, you will be able to see where the old and new bricks intersect.

A royal attraction

The entrance, endearingly coined the Royal Gateway, has been used to welcome members of the royal family to the university over the years. There is even enough space to allow a horse and carriage through the entranceway.

In 2003, the queen rode through to inaugurate the Main Lecture Hall after it was destroyed in a gas explosion in 2000 and then meticulously re-created. For years, the courtyard created between the old and new buildings was used for summer ballets and orchestra concerts.

Alongside the main building are the gardens designed by the horticultural society's gardener Julius August Bentzien in the mid-1800s. Like much of the Frederiksberg campus, the gardens remain almost exactly the same as they were one hundred and fifty years ago. The tree in the image was planted in 1860 and burned down in 2004. Since then, a new tree has been planted in its place.

Like most other things, time has also brought a change in the students studying at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH). Høgsberg remembers a time when almost all the students coming to university to study veterinary sciences were male. Now, things are very different.

»When I started as a librarian nearly 30 years ago, nearly all veterinary students were male. Now there are many more females than males,« says Høgsberg.

The photo captures some of the festivities taking place at the celebration of the campus' 100th year of existence. The buildings have changed a bit, and the chimney in the photos from 1958 no longer exists, although the scene is still recognizable, even if the campus and its students have changed a bit.

Photos by Emma Flokstra Nielsson.

Romantic Garden on Frederiksberg campus — historical pictures of the University of Copenhagen
It is nice to see pictures of the so-called Romantic Garden in old pictures.
