{"id":3416,"date":"2016-06-09T08:12:58","date_gmt":"2016-06-09T06:12:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/?p=3416\/"},"modified":"2018-06-19T12:46:35","modified_gmt":"2018-06-19T10:46:35","slug":"angered-by-danish-research-cuts-rode-his-bike-from-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/angered-by-danish-research-cuts-rode-his-bike-from-london\/","title":{"rendered":"Angered by Danish research cuts &#8211; rode his bike from London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alex McDowell may not be Danish, but he is cycling thousands of kilometres to protest the Danish government\u2019s cuts to education.<\/p>\n<p>The 47-year old physicist from London started his journey on Saturday 28 May as a result of being deeply concerned about cuts to research funding in Denmark. He has decided to use a novel approach to protest the cuts by cycling across several European countries and delivering letters of protest to Danish politicians.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have cycled all the way from London to Harwich, got a ferry to the Hook of Holland, and cycled to Copenhagen using a train to cross the Great Belt to deliver these letters to the Danish political parties, and explain that these cuts in research and education cannot proceed and must be reversed. The rot must stop!&#8221;, he says to the University Post. The newsroom was his first stop in central Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<h2>Cannot leave it up to industry to fund research<\/h2>\n<p>According to Alex, the government cannot afford not to fund research and education properly. He points out that in the past it was only the wealthy who could afford to get an education and that it was often only those with financial backing that were able to do scientific research.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\n<div class=\"image\">\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/33104\"><picture><img src=\"\/old_files\/ucphmeltdown.png\" class=\"\"  decoding=\"async\" title=\"\"  alt=\"\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It cannot be left up to industry alone to fund research, he argues, because the only research that industry is likely to pursue will be those that can reap quick or immediate benefit. &#8220;Would industry have funded Isaac Newton\u2019s work?\u201d he asks rhetorically before adding &#8220;And yet his laws of motion put us on the moon!&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><picture><img src=\"\/old_files\/alexbike2.png\" class=\"\"  decoding=\"async\" title=\"\"  alt=\"\" \/><\/picture><\/div>\n<p><em>Alex McDowell had to explain many times during his 10-day bike ride what the purpose of his protest was. This sign said it all<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Alex elaborates on why government funding is important by pointing out that &#8220;an impending problem is antibiotic resistance. Unfortunately, there is insufficient profit in developing new antibiotics and the drug companies are not investing enough in it \u2013 hence government funding is essential in areas like this,&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>A long journey<\/h2>\n<p>Alex McDowell is a part of the science charity Institute of Physics, though the charity isn&#8217;t a part of his protest. The method chosen was not without reason: &#8220;I think politicians are probably tired of receiving emails or phone calls, so I thought this might get their attention&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\n<div class=\"image\">\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/31194\"><picture><img src=\"\/old_files\/finansminister.jpg\" class=\"\"  decoding=\"async\" title=\"\"  alt=\"\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"title\">\n<div class=\"label\">L\u00e6s mere:<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/31194\">Universities, business surprised by Danish research cuts<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"teaser_text\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>When asked why he cares about cuts to Danish research and education despite not being Danish himself, he responds: &#8220;For years, in Britain, education and science have been underfunded, but this does not mean we should tolerate the rot when it spreads to other countries!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His long journey, covering thousands of kilometres, hasn&#8217;t been easy and it&#8217;s taken a physical toll on Alex: \u201cMy legs are aching,\u201d he says. He has decided to use a novel approach to protest the cuts by cycling across several European countries and delivering letters of protest to Danish politicians.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have cycled all the way from London to Harwich, got a ferry to the Hook of Holland, and cycled to Copenhagen using a train to cross the Great Belt to deliver these letters to the Danish political parties, and explain that these cuts in research and education cannot proceed and must be reversed. The rot must stop!&#8221;, he says to the University Post. The newsroom was his first stop in central Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<h2>Cannot leave it up to industry to fund research<\/h2>\n<p>According to Alex, the government cannot afford not to fund research and education properly. He points out that in the past it was only the wealthy who could afford to get an education and that it was often only those with financial backing that were able to do scientific research.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\n<div class=\"image\">\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/33104\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" src=\"\/old_files\/ucphmeltdown.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It cannot be left up to industry alone to fund research, he argues, because the only research that industry is likely to pursue will be those that can reap quick or immediate benefit. &#8220;Would industry have funded Isaac Newton\u2019s work?\u201d he asks rhetorically before adding &#8220;And yet his laws of motion put us on the moon!&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" src=\"\/old_files\/alexbike2.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<p><em>Alex McDowell had to explain many times during his 10-day bike ride what the purpose of his protest was. This sign said it all<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Alex elaborates on why government funding is important by pointing out that &#8220;an impending problem is antibiotic resistance. Unfortunately, there is insufficient profit in developing new antibiotics and the drug companies are not investing enough in it \u2013 hence government funding is essential in areas like this,&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>A long journey<\/h2>\n<p>Alex McDowell is a part of the science charity Institute of Physics, though the charity isn&#8217;t a part of his protest. The method chosen was not without reason: &#8220;I think politicians are probably tired of receiving emails or phone calls, so I thought this might get their attention&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\n<div class=\"image\">\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/31194\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" src=\"\/old_files\/finansminister.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"title\">\n<div class=\"label\">L\u00e6s mere:<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/31194\">Universities, business surprised by Danish research cuts<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"teaser_text\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>When asked why he cares about cuts to Danish research and education despite not being Danish himself, he responds: &#8220;For years, in Britain, education and science have been underfunded, but this does not mean we should tolerate the rot when it spreads to other countries!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His long journey, covering thousands of kilometres, hasn&#8217;t been easy and it&#8217;s taken a physical toll on Alex: \u201cMy legs are aching,\u201d he says.
