It’s the trend for students to help refugees: Now a student-run bookshop in Copenhagen is collecting books for them.<\/p>\n

Ark Books opened in April 2014, as a purely voluntary-based, student-run book store in N\u00f8rrebro as reported on University Post here.<\/a> Since then they have not only offered a unique selection of English language books, and held various literary and music events, but also published six copies of their own, hand-made book, First Ark Edition with Paul Auster\u2019s and Siri Hustvedt\u2019s original texts. <\/p>\n

The initiative for ‘Bookless’ project came about after one of these original books got stolen from the shop.<\/p>\n

”We can\u2019t really think about why would anybody steal the book. But then we sort of joked that it has to be someone who didn\u2019t have any books,” says Rasmus Heegaard, a volunteer at Ark Books, ”and Minerva (from the shop) thought that maybe there\u2019s more than one person out there, who can\u2019t hold a book. So she said, let\u2019s collect books for those that are in need.”<\/p>\n

Distributing books among the less fortunate<\/h2>\n

As a lucky coincidence, the Kongelunden asylum centre in Drag\u00f8r just started up its library \u2013 Bibliotek Kongelunden \u2013 in the first week of March, and Tore Qvist, a volunteer who worked on the library\u2019s book supply, was excited about the idea of ‘Bookless’. Bibliotek Kongelunden had a lack of resources to organize such collection, while Ark Books needed somebody who can distribute the books among the less fortunate, so it was a perfect fit.<\/p>\n

Student volunteers to make libraries at asylum centres<\/a> <\/div>\n

\n <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Bibliotek Kongelunden is supplied with books from numerous public libraries from all over Denmark, but the majority of them are spare books, or those that have not been checked out for a long time. The mission of ‘Bookless’, on the contrary, is to bring beloved, high-quality books to those who need them the most.<\/p>\n

”It has to be a book that you wouldn\u2019t mind to give to a friend,” says Rasmus.<\/p>\n

Any language will do<\/h2>\n

While Ark Books offers almost exclusively English-language books, for their ‘Bookless’ campaign Danish titles are considered also.<\/p>\n

Among Kongelunden\u2019s residences books in relatively any language can find their new readers, from Arabic and Urdu to English, French, Spanish, and of course Danish.<\/p>\n

‘Bookless’ expects donations until 30 April 2016, however, based on its success they would like to leave the project open-ended.<\/p>\n

about why would anybody steal the book. But then we sort of joked that it has to be someone who didn\u2019t have any books,” says Rasmus Heegaard, a volunteer at Ark Books, ”and Minerva (from the shop) thought that maybe there\u2019s more than one person out there, who can\u2019t hold a book. So she said, let\u2019s collect books for those that are in need.”<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/arkbookscph\/videos\/vb.177046922492857\/478926378971575\/?type=2&theater\" target=\"_blank\">Check out a video about the ‘Bookless’ project on the facebook page here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Distributing books among the less fortunate<\/h2>\n<p>As a lucky coincidence, the Kongelunden asylum centre in Drag\u00f8r just started up its library \u2013 Bibliotek Kongelunden \u2013 in the first week of March, and Tore Qvist, a volunteer who worked on the library\u2019s book supply, was excited about the idea of ‘Bookless’. Bibliotek Kongelunden had a lack of resources to organize such collection, while Ark Books needed somebody who can distribute the books among the less fortunate, so it was a perfect fit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\n<div class=\"image\">\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/32590\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/old_files\/kongelundenbuilding.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"title\">\n<div class=\"label\">L\u00e6s mere:<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/32590\">Student volunteers to make libraries at asylum centres<\/a> <\/div>\n<div class=\"teaser_text\">\n <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Bibliotek Kongelunden is supplied with books from numerous public libraries from all over Denmark, but the majority of them are spare books, or those that have not been checked out for a long time. The mission of ‘Bookless’, on the contrary, is to bring beloved, high-quality books to those who need them the most.<\/p>\n<p>”It has to be a book that you wouldn\u2019t mind to give to a friend,” says Rasmus.<\/p>\n<h2>Any language will do<\/h2>\n<p>While Ark Books offers almost exclusively English-language books, for their ‘Bookless’ campaign Danish titles are considered also.<\/p>\n<p>Among Kongelunden\u2019s residences books in relatively any language can find their new readers, from Arabic and Urdu to English, French, Spanish, and of course Danish.<\/p>\n<p>‘Bookless’ expects donations until 30 April 2016, however, based on its success they would like to leave the project open-ended.<\/p>\n<p>Check out a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/arkbookscph\/videos\/vb.177046922492857\/478926378971575\/?type=2&theater\" target=\"_blank\">video about ‘Bookless’<\/a> on Ark Books’ Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p>universitypost@adm.ku.dk<\/p>\n<p><em>Do you have a good story?
