Back in 2015, in a surprise move that took Danish universities by surprise, the newly elected centre-right Danish government announced substantial cuts to funding for Danish higher education and research.<\/p>\n

Since then the University of Copenhagen has implemented a series of cost-cutting moves that just seems to go on and on.<\/p>\n

The cuts came on top of already inflicted cuts to funding from a reform that intends to speed up students’ graduating times, the so-called Study Progress Reform.<\/p>\n

Here is a timeline of some of the key cutbacks that we know so far:<\/p>\n

31 August, 2015: <\/strong> The Danish government announces that billions will be cut from the university budget <\/a><\/p>\n

2 September, 2015: <\/strong> Humanities students and staff receive an e-mail warning of further losses of funding, amounting to DKK 20 million<\/a>. A total loss of DKK 40 million.<\/p>\n

29 September, 2015: <\/strong>University Post reports that universities, students and businesses were surprised by the Danish research cuts<\/a><\/p>\n

13 October, 2015: <\/strong>UCPH announces hiring freeze and threatens layoffs. <\/a><\/p>\n

29 October, 2015: <\/strong> Pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk criticises the government’s research cuts. <\/a><\/p>\n

30 October, 2015: <\/strong>Reports indicate that up to 30,000 protested against Danish cuts to education<\/a>. The protest was organised by 30 student unions and academic organisations, to speak out against the governments DKK 8.7 billion cut of education funding over the next four years.<\/p>\n

2 November, 2015: <\/strong> More cuts to UCPH administration.
\nPopular activities for staff and students to be cut, including the spring festival. A reduction in PhD’s and in the administration is also planned. <\/a><\/p>\n

11 November, 2015: <\/strong> The government breaks a 14-year-old agreement<\/a> by cutting an annual payment of the University of Copenhagen of DKK 70 million from its 2016 budget. <\/p>\n

20 November, 2015: <\/strong>Change of direction away from Danish ‘knowledge society’ says Rector, <\/a>after the Danish government’s budget for 2016 deal which includes cuts to education and research. University of Copenhagen will also cut jobs.<\/p>\n

14 December, 2015: <\/strong> In a key interview with the University Post, former Minister for Education and Research Esben Lunde Larsen maintains that Denmark is, and should strive to be, a \u2018knowledge society\u2019,<\/a> in spite of the cuts.<\/p>\n

16 December, 2015: <\/strong> Surveys measuring student and staff satisfaction at UCPH cancelled and postponed to save money. HR head states that this is not because of anticipated negative results. <\/a><\/p>\n

9 December, 2015: <\/strong> After a DKK 500 million reduction, University of Copenhagen director says that there will be deep cuts<\/a>. The details about where, and to who, will be released in the coming year.<\/p>\n

15 January, 2016: <\/strong> Humanities stops admissions to Polish, Turkish and other programs. Sources say that the staff is in a state of alert.<\/a><\/p>\n

25 January, 2016: <\/strong> UCPH staff receive timetable for February dismissal.<\/a> Affected staff informed that between 9 and 11 February at the latest. KUnet.dk releases layoff procedure.<\/p>\n

2 February, 2016: <\/strong> University of Copenhagen will fire 209 staff members<\/a>, after 255 have decided to leave voluntarily, it said. The affected staff will receive letters of dismissal.<\/p>\n

5 February, 2016: <\/strong> Unpaid bill of DKK 24 million<\/a> stops an historical excavation in Qatar.<\/p>\n

9 February, 2016: <\/strong> Humanities academics at the University of Copenhagen release a joint statement<\/a>, stating that the closure of small subjects and programs at this university is irresponsible. <\/p>\n

10 February, 2016: <\/strong> UCPH Staff protest over fired colleagues<\/a>. Employees at the Faculty of Health and Medicine Sciences are protesting the same day that some of them will find out if they are fired. <\/p>\n

10 February, 2016: <\/strong> Tibetology shut down at the University of Copenhagen.<\/a> The rich tradition of Tibetan scholarship will no longer be continued in Copenhagen. The News comes as Tibetan Studies scholar is dismissed. <\/p>\n

29 February, 2016: <\/strong> ‘Modern Greek’ can no longer be studied at UCPH. Assistant professor fears loss of expertise and connection to Europe.<\/a><\/p>\n

14 March, 2016: <\/strong>Closure of the University Post, the University of Copenhagen’s English-language media<\/a> to be effective from Summer 2016.<\/p>\n

Newsroom","contributor_title":" ","contributor_image":false}]},{"acf_fc_layout":"Content","content":"<p>Back in 2015, in a surprise move that took Danish universities by surprise, the newly elected centre-right Danish government announced substantial cuts to funding for Danish higher education and research.<\/p>\n<p>Since then the University of Copenhagen has implemented a series of cost-cutting moves that just seems to go on and on.<\/p>\n<p>The cuts came on top of already inflicted cuts to funding from a reform that intends to speed up students’ graduating times, the so-called Study Progress Reform.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a timeline of some of the key cutbacks that we know so far:<\/p>\n<p><strong>31 August, 2015: <\/strong> The Danish government announces that <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/danish-government-billions-be-cut-university-budgets\" target=\"_blank\">billions will be cut from the university budget <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2 September, 2015: <\/strong> Humanities students and staff receive an e-mail <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/humanities-e-mail-warning-loss-dkk-20-million-more-then-expected\" target=\"_blank\">warning of further losses of funding, amounting to DKK 20 million<\/a>. A total loss of DKK 40 million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>29 September, 2015: <\/strong>University Post reports that universities, students and businesses were <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/universities-business-surprised-danish-research-cuts\" target=\"_blank\">surprised by the Danish research cuts<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>13 October, 2015: <\/strong>UCPH announces <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/ucph-stop-all-new-hiring-phd-cuts-closure-threats\">hiring freeze and threatens layoffs. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>29 October, 2015: <\/strong> Pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/novo-nordisk-lashes-out-government-s-research-cuts\">criticises the government’s research cuts. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>30 October, 2015: <\/strong>Reports indicate that up to <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/30000-protested-against-danish-cuts-education\">30,000 protested against Danish cuts to education<\/a>. The protest was organised by 30 student unions and academic organisations, to speak out against the governments DKK 8.7 billion cut of education funding over the next four years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2 November, 2015: <\/strong> More cuts to UCPH administration.<br \/>\nPopular activities for staff and students to be cut, including the spring festival. <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/more-cuts-ucph-admin-phds-spring-festival-cancelled\">A reduction in PhD’s and in the administration is also planned. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong> 11 November, 2015: <\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/government-grabs-dkk-70-million-kua-lease-funds\">The government breaks a 14-year-old agreement<\/a> by cutting an annual payment of the University of Copenhagen of DKK 70 million from its 2016 budget. <\/p>\n<p><strong>20 November, 2015: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/ucph-cut-jobs-after-danish-budget-deal\">Change of direction away from Danish ‘knowledge society’ says Rector, <\/a>after the Danish government’s budget for 2016 deal which includes cuts to education and research. University of Copenhagen will also cut jobs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14 December, 2015: <\/strong> In a key interview with the University Post, former Minister for Education and Research Esben Lunde Larsen maintains that <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/minister-danish-universities-should-reach-stars\">Denmark is, and should strive to be, a \u2018knowledge society\u2019,<\/a> in spite of the cuts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>16 December, 2015: <\/strong> Surveys measuring student and staff satisfaction at UCPH cancelled and postponed to save money. <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/university-copenhagen-cancels-2015-satisfaction-surveys\">HR head states that this is not because of anticipated negative results. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>9 December, 2015: <\/strong> After a DKK 500 million reduction, University of Copenhagen director says that there will <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/dkk-500m-drop-kick-ucph-details-released-staff-meeting\">be deep cuts<\/a>. The details about where, and to who, will be released in the coming year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>15 January, 2016: <\/strong> Humanities stops admissions to Polish, Turkish and other programs. <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/humanities-stops-2016-admissions-polish-turkish-other-programmes\">Sources say that the staff is in a state of alert.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>25 January, 2016: <\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/will-i-be-fired-ucph-staff-get-timetable-february-dismissal\">UCPH staff receive timetable for February dismissal.<\/a> Affected staff informed that between 9 and 11 February at the latest. KUnet.dk releases layoff procedure.<\/p>\n<p><strong> 2 February, 2016: <\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/university-copenhagen-fires-209-staff-255-leave-voluntarily\">University of Copenhagen will fire 209 staff members<\/a>, after 255 have decided to leave voluntarily, it said. The affected staff will receive letters of dismissal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\n<div class=\"image\">\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/32764\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/old_files\/dismissed_0.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"title\">\n<div class=\"label\">L\u00e6s mere:<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/32764\">Poem: A letter of dismissal <\/a> <\/div>\n<div class=\"teaser_text\">\n <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong> 5 February, 2016: <\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/dkk-24-million-unpaid-bill-stops-historical-excavation\">Unpaid bill of DKK 24 million<\/a> stops an historical excavation in Qatar.<\/p>\n<p><strong> 9 February, 2016: <\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/manifesto-small-subjects\">Humanities academics at the University of Copenhagen release a joint statement<\/a>, stating that the closure of small subjects and programs at this university is irresponsible. <\/p>\n<p><strong>10 February, 2016: <\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/ucph-staff-protest-over-sacked-colleagues\">UCPH Staff protest over fired colleagues<\/a>. Employees at the Faculty of Health and Medicine Sciences are protesting the same day that some of them will find out if they are fired. <\/p>\n<p><strong>10 February, 2016: <\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/tibetology-shut-down-university-copenhagen\">Tibetology shut down at the University of Copenhagen.<\/a> The rich tradition of Tibetan scholarship will no longer be continued in Copenhagen. The News comes as Tibetan Studies scholar is dismissed. <\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\n<div class=\"image\">\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/33214\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/old_files\/universitypostsign.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"title\">\n<div class=\"label\">L\u00e6s mere:<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/33214\">University Post to be closed down as independent website<\/a> <\/div>\n<div class=\"teaser_text\">\n <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>24 February, 2016: <\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/students-outraged-lecturer-year-fired\">254 students object to losing Lecturer of the Year 2014<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>26 February, 2016: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/students-fight-cutbacks-24-hour-sit-thursday\">Students to fight cut backs with 24-hour sit-in on 3 March. <\/a> Protesters state that academic freedom is threatened by cuts to education. <\/p>\n<p><strong>29 February, 2016: <\/strong> ‘Modern Greek’ can no longer be studied at UCPH.<a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/modern-greek-can-no-longer-be-studied-ucph\"> Assistant professor fears loss of expertise and connection to Europe.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>14 March, 2016: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/university-post-be-closed-down-independent-website\">Closure of the University Post, the University of Copenhagen’s English-language media<\/a> to be effective from Summer 2016.<\/p>\n<p><em>Have you been affected by the cuts?
