This is according to Minister of Education and Research Esben Lunde Larsen yesterday in the face of widespread criticism, writes seven59.dk and dr.dk.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister said he has no concerns about Denmark falling behind because the country will still be amongst the leading OECD nations in terms of state funding for research. <\/p>\n<p>His comments come after a recent University Post interview, where he said that in spite of Danish cuts to research and education, universities could <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/minister-danish-universities-should-reach-stars\" target=\"_blank\">still ‘reach for the stars’.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Education cuts \u2018short-sighted\u2019 says opposition<\/h2>\n<p>The government\u2019s \u2018short-sighted\u2019 polices are to blame for more than 500 jobs being slashed at the University of Copenhagen, the Social Liberals\u2019 education and research spokeswoman Ida Auken claimed yesterday after Denmark\u2019s biggest and most respected learning institution announced that 209 staffers will lose their jobs next week, in addition to 255 who have already opted to leave voluntarily.<\/p>\n<p>The university has been forced to reduce costs by DKK 300m after the government slashed funding for education and research, but according to Ida Auken it makes \u2018no sense\u2019 for a country that prides itself on a highly-trained, competitive workforce to take such drastic action.<\/p>\n<h2>Economic growth a priority<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s more a question of priorities,\u201d says Esben Lunde Larsen. \u201cWe need to exploit our resources even better and that\u2019s why we have implemented a number of initiatives aimed at redistributing research throughout society to create greater economic growth\u201d, writes seven59.dk and dr.dk.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\n<div class=\"image\">\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/32350\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/old_files\/esbenlundelarsenpressphotol.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"title\">\n<div class=\"label\">L\u00e6s mere:<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/32350\">Minister: Danish universities should \u2018reach for the stars\u2018<\/a> <\/div>\n<div class=\"teaser_text\">\n <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ida Auken disagrees with the decision. \u201cThis government would rather reduce the tax on luxury cars than invest in our young people, but it\u2019s short-sighted and irresponsible,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen we (Social Liberals) were in power we gave education top priority because it isn\u2019t always just about here and now \u2013 it\u2019s about how we will live in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>No turning back<\/h2>\n<p>Although the Social Liberals and Socialist People\u2019s Party have summoned the Minister to a parliamentary hearing to explain the cutbacks he said there\u2019s no turning back: \u201cThe government has repeatedly stated the need for a stable and cohesive economy and to achieve that educational institutions are required to cut expenditure by 2%, in line with local municipalities, the police, and other state agencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ida Auken vowed her party would fight to maintain high investment in education if returned to power after the next election and was backed by her Socialist People\u2019s Party\u2019s (SPP) counterpart, Jacob Mark, who called the cutbacks \u2018extremely damaging\u2019 and a \u2018potential catastrophe\u2019 for Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>Read the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dr.dk\/nyheder\/politik\/minister-om-forskningsbesparelser-vi-ryger-ikke-ud-af-toppen\">article on the Danish news site Dr.dk here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dr.dk\/nyheder\/politik\/r-og-sf-efter-ku-nedskaeringer-meningsloest-og-katastrofalt-danmark\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>universitypost@adm.ku.dk<\/p>\n<p><em>Do you have a good story?
