The faint sound of chatter becomes an excited flurry of conversation.<\/p>\n

A few footsteps soon became deafening with the anticipation tangibly rising, as the graduate and PhD students trickled in. In fact, even a few grey-haired professors could be seen filling the gaps in the auditorium. All the while, the speaker had taken his place in the front row, silently waiting until the clock turned 3 pm.<\/p>\n

We are at the Lundbeck Auditorium, Copenhagen BioCentre, University of Copenhagen, and the speaker for the day is Julian Treasure on ‘how to speak so that people want to listen\u2019, invited by MoMeD, the Danish Research Programme on Molecular Mechanisms of Disease.<\/p>\n

The speaker is the message<\/h2>\n

Julian Treasure is a five-time speaker at the renowned TED Talks (in fact, his most popular talk ranks among the top 20 most popular on the site) and the founder of a consultancy firm called \u2018The Sound Agency\u2019. He works with brands – asking them how the brand sounds – and he is particularly intrigued by “getting the sound right in public spaces\u201d, referencing a newly-completed project to improve the sound at the Mall of Scandinavia, Stockholm. <\/p>\n

Julian Treasure: We are hardly trained to use our voice properly<\/em><\/p>\n

His ability to captivate the audience quickly became apparent. As he provided an overview regarding the significance of sound, his deep voice, perfect posture and excellent delivery was in itself a pleasurable auditory experience, which, of course, was the point of it all.<\/p>\n

Giving a gift<\/h2>\n

In introducing the importance of sound, he noted that “it\u2019s amazing that this instrument (our voice) is something that we are expected to know how to play”. In particular, he touched on the marked “mismatch in training” in regards to our voices. <\/p>\n

We use it in almost every social context imaginable, but we are hardly trained to use it properly. And in public spaces, “there is so much noise around us that we get into the habit of suppressing sound,” he says,<\/p>\n

Speaking is equivalent to giving a gift, as presentations are fundamentally all about the listener and not the speaker.<\/p>\n

Practical advice<\/h2>\n

So what were his practical pieces of advice for speakers? Here are some pieces of advice from Julian Treasure’s talk:<\/p>\n

The first ones are on using your vocal toolbox<\/em>: As he puts it, “we associate depth with power and significance”.
\n\u2022 Stance: Use a neutral stance that isn\u2019t distracting to the audience, but remains natural
\n\u2022 Breathing: \u201cThe antidote to nerves\u201d; breathe before a speech to settle yourself and \treduce anxiety
\n\u2022 Register: Try and speak from your stomach and not from your nose\/throat; it provides a clearer and deeper sound
\n\u2022 Prosody: Speak rhythmically and fluidly, it\u2019s \u201croute one for emotion and meaning\u201d
\n\u2022 Variation: Vary your pace and tone to stimulate the listeners<\/p>\n

The second pieces of advice are practical tips<\/em>:
\n\u2022 Practice speaking
\n\u2022 Set up a theatre\/speaking area at home that mimics the venue
\n\u2022 Get a coach who can evaluate you objectively
\n\u2022 Plan your talk: Order your ideas, use aids, create content-chunks
\n\u2022 Warm-up your lips, tongue and chest to improve your sound on stage
\n\u2022 Power poses: Poses that make you look larger can be used when you\u2019re lacking confidence, as they release testosterone and thereby increase confidence
\n\u2022 Gestures: Avoid a placator gesture (having your hand open) and use gestures to emphasise points<\/p>\n

Curate your own environment<\/h2>\n

At the end of the talk, he encouraged us to “curate our own environment” – building public spaces, venues, and even ourselves as individuals around the pillars of good sound.<\/p>\n

Khurana","contributor_title":" ","contributor_image":false}]},{"acf_fc_layout":"Content","content":"<p>The faint sound of chatter becomes an excited flurry of conversation.<\/p>\n<p>A few footsteps soon became deafening with the anticipation tangibly rising, as the graduate and PhD students trickled in. In fact, even a few grey-haired professors could be seen filling the gaps in the auditorium. All the while, the speaker had taken his place in the front row, silently waiting until the clock turned 3 pm.<\/p>\n<p>We are at the Lundbeck Auditorium, Copenhagen BioCentre, University of Copenhagen, and the speaker for the day is Julian Treasure on ‘how to speak so that people want to listen\u2019, invited by MoMeD, the Danish Research Programme on Molecular Mechanisms of Disease.<\/p>\n<h2>The speaker is the message<\/h2>\n<p>Julian Treasure is a five-time speaker at the renowned TED Talks (in fact, his most popular talk ranks among the top 20 most popular on the site) and the founder of a consultancy firm called \u2018The Sound Agency\u2019. He works with brands – asking them how the brand sounds – and he is particularly intrigued by “getting the sound right in public spaces\u201d, referencing a newly-completed project to improve the sound at the Mall of Scandinavia, Stockholm. <\/p>\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/old_files\/juliantreasure_0.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/div>\n<p><em>Julian Treasure: We are hardly trained to use our voice properly<\/em><\/p>\n<p>His ability to captivate the audience quickly became apparent. As he provided an overview regarding the significance of sound, his deep voice, perfect posture and excellent delivery was in itself a pleasurable auditory experience, which, of course, was the point of it all.<\/p>\n<h2>Giving a gift<\/h2>\n<p>In introducing the importance of sound, he noted that “it\u2019s amazing that this instrument (our voice) is something that we are expected to know how to play”. In particular, he touched on the marked “mismatch in training” in regards to our voices. <\/p>\n<p>We use it in almost every social context imaginable, but we are hardly trained to use it properly. And in public spaces, “there is so much noise around us that we get into the habit of suppressing sound,” he says,<\/p>\n<p>Speaking is equivalent to giving a gift, as presentations are fundamentally all about the listener and not the speaker.<\/p>\n<h2>Practical advice<\/h2>\n<p>So what were his practical pieces of advice for speakers? Here are some pieces of advice from Julian Treasure’s talk:<\/p>\n<p>The first ones are on using your <em>vocal toolbox<\/em>: As he puts it, “we associate depth with power and significance”.<br \/>\n\u2022 Stance: Use a neutral stance that isn\u2019t distracting to the audience, but remains natural<br \/>\n\u2022 Breathing: \u201cThe antidote to nerves\u201d; breathe before a speech to settle yourself and \treduce anxiety<br \/>\n\u2022 Register: Try and speak from your stomach and not from your nose\/throat; it provides a clearer and deeper sound<br \/>\n\u2022 Prosody: Speak rhythmically and fluidly, it\u2019s \u201croute one for emotion and meaning\u201d<br \/>\n\u2022 Variation: Vary your pace and tone to stimulate the listeners<\/p>\n<p>The second pieces of advice are <em>practical tips<\/em>:<br \/>\n\u2022 Practice speaking<br \/>\n\u2022 Set up a theatre\/speaking area at home that mimics the venue<br \/>\n\u2022 Get a coach who can evaluate you objectively<br \/>\n\u2022 Plan your talk: Order your ideas, use aids, create content-chunks<br \/>\n\u2022 Warm-up your lips, tongue and chest to improve your sound on stage<br \/>\n\u2022 Power poses: Poses that make you look larger can be used when you\u2019re lacking confidence, as they release testosterone and thereby increase confidence<br \/>\n\u2022 Gestures: Avoid a placator gesture (having your hand open) and use gestures to emphasise points<\/p>\n<h2>Curate your own environment<\/h2>\n<p>At the end of the talk, he encouraged us to “curate our own environment” – building public spaces, venues, and even ourselves as individuals around the pillars of good sound.<\/p>\n<p>I quite like the sound of that.<\/p>\n<p>Watch the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/julian_treasure_how_to_speak_so_that_people_want_to_listen\" target=\"_blank\">corresponding TED-talk here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>universitypost@adm.ku.dk<\/p>\n<p><em>Do you have a good story?
