If you think data is just figures, think again. Data can also be beautiful, and for the third year running the Faculty of Science is inviting students and staff to take part in its ARTiS (Art in Science) photography contest.<\/p>\n

Entering is easy: e-mail your most beautiful image from the world of science. Pictures can range from an artistic array of data points to photographs taken while out in the field.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe pictures that get entered are beautiful in and of themselves, but they have an additional, scientific value, since they show a part of the world that scientists see that can\u2019t always be perceived with the naked eye. We hope this gets people thinking about whether science is art,\u201d says Christina Toldbod, one of the organisers of the competition.
\n<\/p>\n

Big success<\/h3>\n

The first ARTiS contest was held in 2015. Last year 159 entries were received from all academic levels, from primary school on up to post-doc. Pictures can be submitted in one of five categories based on the size of the object being depicted, ranging from nano up to mega. There is also a \u2018visualisations\u2019 category for things like data, concepts and equations.<\/p>\n

A committee made up of University of Copenhagen faculty and staff will choose the winning picture, but public likes on Facebook<\/a> during the contest will also be taken into account.<\/p>\n

Three types of prizes will be awarded:<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ARTiS prize 2017, for the best overall image
\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 prize for best image in each category
\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 young ART Scientists prize for pictures submitted by individuals studying below university level<\/p>\n

Prizes will also be awarded for the funniest picture and for the best description. Winning pictures will be displayed around the university.<\/p>\n

Last year 159 entries were received from all academic levels, from primary school on up to post-doc. Pictures can be submitted in one of five categories based on the size of the object being depicted, ranging from nano up to mega. There is also a \u2018visualisations\u2019 category for things like data, concepts and equations.<\/p>\n<p>A committee made up of University of Copenhagen faculty and staff will choose the winning picture, but public likes on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ARTiS2016\">Facebook<\/a> during the contest will also be taken into account.<\/p>\n<p>Three types of prizes will be awarded:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ARTiS prize 2017, for the best overall image<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 prize for best image in each category<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 young ART Scientists prize for pictures submitted by individuals studying below university level<\/p>\n<p>Prizes will also be awarded for the funniest picture and for the best description.
