UCPH is now number 73 in the world and 22 in Europe (20th last year).<\/p>\n<p>Despite the slight slip on the overall list, UCPH is still the best-placed university in Scandinavia. If you look at the lists based on subject area, UCPH has seven programmes in the top 20. The top scoring education programme is veterinary medicine, which is ranked as number 13 in the world. Among the other programmes in the top 20, <secret text=\"UCPH programmes within anatomy and physiology is ranked 16th, agriculture and forestry is 18th, sports-related subjects is 18th and dentistry is 20th.\">development studies is 14th and anthropology is 16th<\/secret>.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, US and British universities are heavily represented at the top of the tables, and occupy all nine of the top 10 spots. At the top is MIT, followed by Stanford and Harvard.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\">\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">QS\u2019 method<\/p>\n<p>Universities\u2019 placings are based on an overall score made up from the following six indicators:<\/p>\n<p>1. Academic Reputation (counts 40%)<br \/>\n2. Employer Reputation (counts 10%)<br \/>\n3. Faculty Student Ratio (counts 20%)<br \/>\n4. Citation per Faculty (counts 20%)<br \/>\n5. International Faculty (counts 5%)<br \/>\n6. International Students (counts 5%)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>How do you measure it?<\/h3>\n<p>The University of Copenhagen&#8217;s total score is 69.2 out of 100. It is an average of six factors (see fact box on the right).<\/p>\n<p>UCPH scores high in academic reputation (81.7), faculty \/ student ratio (99.9) and international faculty (84.9), but low in UCPH is now number 73 in the world and 22 in Europe (20th last year).<\/p>\n<p>Despite the slight slip on the overall list, UCPH is still the best-placed university in Scandinavia. If you look at the lists based on subject area, UCPH has seven programmes in the top 20. The top scoring education programme is veterinary medicine, which is ranked as number 13 in the world. Among the other programmes in the top 20, <secret text=\"UCPH programmes within anatomy and physiology is ranked 16th, agriculture and forestry is 18th, sports-related subjects is 18th and dentistry is 20th.\">development studies is 14th and anthropology is 16th<\/secret>.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, US and British universities are heavily represented at the top of the tables, and occupy all nine of the top 10 spots. At the top is MIT, followed by Stanford and Harvard.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\">\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">QS\u2019 method<\/p>\n<p>Universities\u2019 placings are based on an overall score made up from the following six indicators:<\/p>\n<p>1. Academic Reputation (counts 40%)<br \/>\n2. Employer Reputation (counts 10%)<br \/>\n3. Faculty Student Ratio (counts 20%)<br \/>\n4. Citation per Faculty (counts 20%)<br \/>\n5. International Faculty (counts 5%)<br \/>\n6. International Students (counts 5%)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>How do you measure it?<\/h3>\n<p>The University of Copenhagen&#8217;s total score is 69.2 out of 100. It is an average of six factors (see fact box on the right).<\/p>\n<p>UCPH scores high in academic reputation (81.7), faculty \/ student ratio (99.9) and international faculty (84.9), but low in citation per faculty (26.9) and international students (26.5).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"ArticleEnd"},{"acf_fc_layout":"Banner","img":false,"url":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"OtherStories","headline":"","hand_picked_posts":true,"references":[{"reference":{"ID":2893,"post_author":"12","post_date":"2016-09-22 07:04:36","post_date_gmt":"0000-00-00 00:00:00","post_content":"\nThe University of Copenhagen\u2019s (UCPH) status on one of the most recognized international rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, has taken a dramatic hit.\r\n\r\nUCPH drops 38 spots from position number 82 in the world to number 120, and from 33rd to 49th place in Europe.\r\n\r\nThe Swedish Karolinska Institutet remains the highest Scandinavian university on 28th place, while UCPH is now only sixth in Scandinavia. Besides Karolinska, UCPH has now been surpassed by Helsinki, Uppsala, Lund and the University of Aarhus (number 98), which is now Denmark's best university, according to Times Higher Education.\r\n\r\n<h2>The cost of cuts<\/h2>\r\nIn a press release, Phil Baty,  Editor of Times Higher Education World University Rankings writes that \"the traditionally well-funded universities in Denmark and Finland are also already seeing signs of deterioration following large budget cuts in the past year. The universities of Copenhagen and Helsinki dropped 38 and 15 places respectively. \"\r\n\r\nUCPH has this year cut DKK 300m from its budget, has cut 500 staff positions, and is to save another DKK 200m before 2019 as a result of the Liberal Party government\u2019s savings in research and education.\r\n\r\nPhil Baty predicted in March this year that the cuts would affect the University's place in future rankings.\r\n\r\n\"In the longer term, UCPH risks a brain drain. And there is no money to offer international talent a tempting salary or adequate research and laboratory facilities,\" said Phil Baty.\r\n\r\n<h2>Decline in UCPH reputation<\/h2>\r\nAccording to Ellie Bothwell, a journalist at the Times Higher Education who specializes in Scandinavia, the University of Copenhagen's drop in the rankings is primarily due to the deterioration in the university's international reputation.\r\n\r\nThe Times Higher Education World University Ranking carries out an annual survey asking more than 10,000 recognized researchers for their views on excellence in research and teaching in their field of study and the universities of which they are aware of.\r\n\r\n\"We can see that the layoffs and the cuts are beginning to have an effect,\" says Ellie Bothwell.\r\n\r\nShe adds that another factor is that the competition to be among the 200 best universities in the world has become tougher, as Asian universities are on the rise.\r\n\r\nTimes Higher Education evaluates universities in the categories of Education (which has a weight of 15 per cent) , research (weight of 18 per cent) as well as categories such as number of citations, international outlook and cooperation with companies.\r\n\r\nRead about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/ranking-methodology-2016\" target=\"_blank\">the methodology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/world-reputation-rankings-2015-methodology\" target=\"_blank\">the survey here.<\/a>\r\n\r\n<h2>No pattern<\/h2>\r\nAnni S\u00f8borg, Vice Director for Education at UCPH, finds it hard to see a pattern in the University of Copenhagen's ranking position.\r\n\r\n\"Last year we moved up 78 places, and this year we dropped 38 places back, so we don\u2019t put much store in how it goes,\" says Anni S\u00f8borg.\r\n\r\nShe adds that UCPH will look into the reasons for the sharp decline this year, and that it is in contact with Times Higher Education.\r\n\r\n\"We cannot do much more than ask for an explanation as to how they calculate the score that UCPH has received. We can see that we have fallen back on what they call 'research volume and income', but why is unclear,\" says Anni S\u00f8borg.\r\n\r\n<h2>Cuts have consequences<\/h2>\r\nIda Auken, education and research spokeswoman for the Social Liberal Party, sees the fall of UCPH on the rankings as a sign that the consequences of the government's cutback policies are now seriously beginning to show.\r\n\r\n\"It has consequences that the government for two consecutive years has cut back with the support of the Danish People's Party. It looks like it will continue for the next three to four years. So this is serious, as it means that we cannot attract the scientists and students that will ensure that Denmark can make a living doing something in the future,\" says Ida Auken.\r\n\r\nThe Social Liberal Party has in connection with the government\u2019s budget presentation made its own proposal, calling it the \u2018gift of a generation\u2019 to our children.\r\n\r\nIt includes more investment in education, and a cancelling of the so-called re-prioritization contribution of two per cent for education in 2017.\r\n\r\n<h2>Minister: Aarhus has not fallen back<\/h2>\r\nMinister for Education and Research Ulla T\u00f8rn\u00e6s (Liberal Party) does not agree with the claim that the Danish government cuts are behind the UCPH drop in the rankings.\r\n\r\nShe points out that many different rankings are published, and that the University of Copenhagen in August was placed as the second best university in continental Europe on the Shanghai tables.\r\n\r\n\"It's important to me that Denmark has world-class universities, and I can see that Aarhus University moves up on the Times Higher Education ranking. Aarhus University is subject to the same efficiency requirements as UCPH. Copenhagen is the highest ranked amongst Danish Institutions followed by the University of Aarhus which is placed at joint 46th, while the Technical University of Denmark comes in at joint 82nd. Overall Denmark has six institutions in the top 200.\r\n\r\nDenmark has done well according to Phil Baty, the editor of the Times Higher Education rankings. \"It is great news for Denmark that six of its institutions have made this prestigious list, with half of these sitting in the top 100.  Denmark\u2019s success is part of a wider trend of the Scandinavian countries\u2019 strong performance in the ranking boasting a total of 27 institutions in total.\"\r\n\r\n<h2>UK still leads the region<\/h2>\r\nWorldwide, the University of Copenhagen <a href=\"http:\/\/universitypost.dk\/article\/times-ranking-ucph-shoots-82nd-world\" target=\"_blank\">shot up to 82nd <\/a>\r\non the main Times Higher Education ranking last October, just before cuts to teaching, services, programmes and more than 500 layoffs were warned. \r\n\r\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\n  <div class=\"image\">\n    <div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/31205\" title=\"\"><img src=\"\/old_files\/rankingthe.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/div>  <\/div>\n  <div class=\"title\">\n    <div class=\"label\">L\u00e6s mere:<\/div>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/31205\">Times ranking: UCPH shoots up to 82nd in the world<\/a>  <\/div>\n      <div class=\"teaser_text\">\n          <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\r\n\r\nGermany is the standout performer in the ranking with 36 institutions in the top 200, and is the country with the second highest number of institutions, with almost a third (11) in the top 50. However In terms of overall numbers, the UK still leads the region taking nearly a quarter of places (46) in the top 200 \u2013 including seven of the top 10. Anglo-American instititutions traditionally dominate the Times ranking.\r\n\r\nThe development of increased competition is an exciting prospect according to Phil Baty: \"While once students from India or China would have considered the UK their only study option, there is now an exciting and healthy competition opening up, and it could change the fortunes of entire institutions in the longer term.\u201d\r\n\r\n<h2>Major shake-up in the international student recruitment in Europe<\/h2>\r\nPhil Baty believes that international students play a key part in improving a country's higher education system. \"International students are hugely important to the health of any higher education system and the wider economy. Drawing in international talent helps universities to drive up teaching standards, and foreign students add a great deal to the overall student experience by supporting a rich, multicultural campus life for all students.\" \r\n\r\nAlthough The UK has topped the rankings, there is no guaranty that it will continue to lead the way, according to Phil Baty.\r\n\r\n\"This new ranking shows that we are facing what could amount to a major shake-up in the international student recruitment market in Europe.
