A Danish People\u2019s Party MP has called for a tax on all adverts containing English words in a move to protect the \u2018beautiful\u2019 Danish language, according to Seven59.dk and the Daily Telegraph. <\/p>\n

The populist party\u2019s culture spokesman, Alex Ahrendtsen, said any company using English in an advertising campaign should be hit with an extra tax.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t ban them from making ads in English but we can make them think twice by hitting them in the wallet,\u201d he said. \u201cThe increasing English usage annoys me no end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Danes are arguably the world’s best speakers <\/a> of English as a second language.<\/p>\n

The English language is ubiquitous in Denmark, with slang words frequently used by Danes, and advertising agencies building campaigns with English slogans. It\u2019s this which has invoked the ire of Ahrendtsen. <\/p>\n

He blames Denmark\u2019s \u201clanguage anxiety\u201d for rise of English in Denmark. \u201cWe are afraid of not being hip and international, so we tend to do things in English and not do things in Danish.\u201d<\/p>\n

However the party\u2019s foreign affairs spokesman S\u00f8ren Espersen denies taxing adverts in foreign langauges is official party policy. <\/p>\n
