It was a normal Thursday night, my girlfriend Anne Jo Dobel and I sprawled out on our couch watching the news.<\/p>\n
Suddenly I hear a gasp of excitement from Anne, now sat upright clutching her phone.<\/p>\n
\u00bbI think I might have found an incredibly rare mushroom today in Amager F\u00e6lled!\u00ab<\/p>\n
\u00bbAre you sure?\u00ab I replied tentatively.<\/p>\n
Crowded inbox<\/h2>\n
\u00bbWell, at least all of these people think so,\u00ab she said, showing me a number of unread emails in her inbox.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s incredibly important that we document observations of species like the Jensens Vokshat that are rare in both Denmark and the world. Whether it\u2019s an endangered fungi, plant or animal, it must be preserved. And in this case that preservation starts right on our doorstep here in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n

Scanning the list of mails addressed from University of Copenhagen (UCPH) professors, mushroom experts, conservations and journalists, they all conveyed the same theme: \u2018You seems to have found the perfect mushroom, at the perfect time, in the perfect place\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u00bbIt\u2019s a wax cap mushroom called a \u2018Jensens Vokshat\u2019 and it is listed as being acutely threatened on the Danish Red List. I wasn\u2019t sure because it didn\u2019t blush when I picked it and it tasted quite bitter,\u00ab she said in a hurry.<\/p>\n

Determined to identify the unsavoury mushroom for her UCPH masters course in Field Mycology and Identification of Fungi, Anne had taken some of the specimen to UCPH\u00b4s Freshwater Biology Lab to look at in under a microscope.<\/p>\n
<\/picture><\/p>\n
\u00bbAfter trying to identify it for an hour or two I uploaded my pictures and notes to the online atlas of Danish fungi for confirmation and forgot about it.\u00ab<\/p>\n
Now proudly holding her phone up in front of my face, \u00bbLook, there it is. Species confirmed,\u00ab she exclaimed. Grinning, I held out my palm and gave her a massive high five.<\/p>\n
Controversial construction plan<\/h2>\n
\u00bbBut wait, what do they mean \u00bbIn the perfect place\u00ab?\u00ab I asked laughingly.<\/p>\n
\u00bbWell, it\u2019s probably because I found the mushroom in the same area that they want to build the new houses I should think,\u00ab she replied.<\/p>\n
It was true. For many years an area of roughly 6% of Amager F\u00e6lled has been earmarked for a large housing development of 2500 homes.<\/p>\n
Originally sold in 1994, the piece of land was released for housing development as a strategy to fund the construction of Copenhagen\u2019s Metro system.<\/p>\n
However, construction plans have been met with strong opposition. For example, a petition arguing against the development lead by Danmark\u2019s Naturfredningsforening gathered over 47,000 signatures and, earlier this year, a demonstration at the location attracted several thousand participants. \n<\/p>\n
Home of rare species<\/h2>\n
One of the main reasons that opposition is so strong is because, unlike the majority of nature areas nearby Copenhagen, this particular area of Amager F\u00e6lled has never been cultivated or fertilised for farming purposes.<\/p>\n
\u00bbNot only is the area special in Amager F\u00e6lled, Sam. It is special in the whole of Sj\u00e6lland. That\u2019s the reason why it is possible to find such rare species within the city and it is exactly the reason why the area shouldn\u2019t be developed,\u00ab my girlfriend explained.<\/p>\n
Coincidentally two days ago, Copenhagen\u2019s Mayor Frank Jensen announced that he is now considering alternative locations for the new 2500 homes within a new feasibility study, due for publication in early 2018.<\/p>\n
Regardless of the decision, Anne still feels her finding has an important role to play in the conservation of Amager F\u00e6lled.<\/p>\n

","use_post_excerpt":false},{"acf_fc_layout":"Byline","is_author":false,"contributors":[{"use_registered_user":false,"user":false,"contributor_name":"Sam Black","contributor_title":"Student Reporter","contributor_image":false}]},{"acf_fc_layout":"Content","content":"<p>It was a normal Thursday night, my girlfriend Anne Jo Dobel and I sprawled out on our couch watching the news.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly I hear a gasp of excitement from Anne, now sat upright clutching her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbI think I might have found an incredibly rare mushroom today in Amager F\u00e6lled!\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbAre you sure?\u00ab I replied tentatively.<\/p>\n<h2>Crowded inbox<\/h2>\n<p>\u00bbWell, at least all of these people think so,\u00ab she said, showing me a number of unread emails in her inbox.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s incredibly important that we document observations of species like the Jensens Vokshat that are rare in both Denmark and the world. Whether it\u2019s an endangered fungi, plant or animal, it must be preserved. And in this case that preservation starts right on our doorstep here in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"quotee\">Anne Jo Dobel, master student at UCPH<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Scanning the list of mails addressed from University of Copenhagen (UCPH) professors, mushroom experts, conservations and journalists, they all conveyed the same theme: \u2018You seems to have found the perfect mushroom, at the perfect time, in the perfect place\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt\u2019s a wax cap mushroom called a \u2018Jensens Vokshat\u2019 and it is listed as being acutely threatened on the Danish Red List. Species confirmed,\u00ab she exclaimed. Grinning, I held out my palm and gave her a massive high five.<\/p>\n<h2>Controversial construction plan<\/h2>\n<p>\u00bbBut wait, what do they mean \u00bbIn the perfect place\u00ab?\u00ab I asked laughingly.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbWell, it\u2019s probably because I found the mushroom in the same area that they want to build the new houses I should think,\u00ab she replied.<\/p>\n<p>It was true. For many years an area of roughly 6% of Amager F\u00e6lled has been earmarked for a large housing development of 2500 homes.<\/p>\n<p>Originally sold in 1994, the piece of land was released for housing development as a strategy to fund the construction of Copenhagen\u2019s Metro system.<\/p>\n<p>However, construction plans have been met with strong opposition. It is special in the whole of Sj\u00e6lland. That\u2019s the reason why it is possible to find such rare species within the city and it is exactly the reason why the area shouldn\u2019t be developed,\u00ab my girlfriend explained.<\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally two days ago, Copenhagen\u2019s Mayor Frank Jensen announced that he is now considering alternative locations for the new 2500 homes within a new feasibility study, due for publication in early 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the decision, Anne still feels her finding has an important role to play in the conservation of Amager F\u00e6lled.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt\u2019s incredibly important that we document observations of species like the Jensens Vokshat that are rare in both Denmark and the world.
