This is according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/women-more-likely-be-pressured-add-authors-papers#survey-answer\">timeshighereducation.com.<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\">\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">THE STUDY<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Was carried out by<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article\/file?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0187394&amp;type=printable\"> two researchers<\/a> \u2013Eric Fong and Allen Wilhite at the University of Alabama in the southern United States.<br \/>\n\u2022 35.5 per cent of respondents admitted having written in a co-author who had not contributed.<br \/>\n\u2022 More than 110,000 academics from many different disciplines were questioned about the subject and 12,000 of them responded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Not only women feel the pressure to list more co-authors. Junior academics are also between\u00a0 <secret text=\"Lecturers are 90 per cent mere likely to do it than professors, and for associate professors the number is 40 per cent.\">40 and 90 per cent<\/secret>\u00a0more likely to write others on to the title page. The perceived pressure depends on the degree of security in their employment, the study shows.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a large difference in how much pressure the female and young researchers feel depending on their research area.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers working in the field of political science feel 44 per cent <em>less<\/em> pressured to &#8216;divide&#8217; out their authorship, while those working in the field that the University of Alabama classifies as &#8216;marketing&#8217; feel 75 per cent more pressured than the average.<\/p>\n<h3>Several explanations for the phenomenon<\/h3>\n<p>According to the study, there are several explanations for the phenomenon. The most common is that the co-author (s) listed are the manager of the female or young researcher and that it could affect their career prospects if they opposed it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Internal discussion of these issues on a university-by-university basis is needed, and there isn\u2019t a magic switch that will turn on or off such activities<\/p>\n<p class=\"quotee\">Allen Wilwhite, the author of the study<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Secondly, the researchers can feel the pressure from editors of scientific journals because it increases the status, value and impact of a magazine. 14.1 percent of the 12,000 respondents responded that they had experienced pressure from an editor.<\/p>\n<p>Financing is a third reason. It can significantly increase the chances of obtaining more financial funding to continue the work on their research project.<\/p>\n<h3>A difficult, but necessary discussion<\/h3>\n<p>The authors of the study conclude that many academics participate in activities that they themselves find outrageous.<\/p>\n<p>And that it is naive to believe that academics are will not use primitive but career-promoting tricks. The perceived pressure depends on the degree of security in their employment, the study shows.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a large difference in how much pressure the female and young researchers feel depending on their research area.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers working in the field of political science feel 44 per cent <em>less<\/em> pressured to &#8216;divide&#8217; out their authorship, while those working in the field that the University of Alabama classifies as &#8216;marketing&#8217; feel 75 per cent more pressured than the average.<\/p>\n<h3>Several explanations for the phenomenon<\/h3>\n<p>According to the study, there are several explanations for the phenomenon. The most common is that the co-author (s) listed are the manager of the female or young researcher and that it could affect their career prospects if they opposed it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Internal discussion of these issues on a university-by-university basis is needed, and there isn\u2019t a magic switch that will turn on or off such activities<\/p>\n<p class=\"quotee\">Allen Wilwhite, the author of the study<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Secondly, the researchers can feel the pressure from editors of scientific journals because it increases the status, value and impact of a magazine. 14.1 percent of the 12,000 respondents responded that they had experienced pressure from an editor.<\/p>\n<p>Financing is a third reason. It can significantly increase the chances of obtaining more financial funding to continue the work on their research project.<\/p>\n<h3>A difficult, but necessary discussion<\/h3>\n<p>The authors of the study conclude that many academics participate in activities that they themselves find outrageous.<\/p>\n<p>And that it is naive to believe that academics are will not use primitive but career-promoting tricks.
