To illustrate the importance of timpani, picture the theme from Space Oddysey: 2001 \u2026 with your ears \u2026 in your mind (or click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_detailpage&amp;v=o09L-hkrzhw#t=35\" target=\"blank\" title=\"Also Sprach Zarathustra\">this link<\/a> so you don&#8217;t have to).<\/p>\n<p>Now imagine that without the drums. It\u2019s not the same is it? Damn right it isn&#8217;t!<\/p>\n<p>To remedy this, SymfUni have started <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booomerang.dk\/projects\/pauker-soeges\/\" target=\"blank&gt;a campaign on the Danish crowdfunding site &lt;em&gt;Boomerang&lt;\/em&gt;&lt;\/a&gt;. Timpani are expensive, and the orchestra is voluntary and self-funded. They need your money.\n\n[video:https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EFG0-rrsVe4 width:565 height:420 align:center]\n\n&lt;h2&gt;How about a private concert?&lt;\/h2&gt;\n\" name>Timpani are awesome<br \/>\nWriting for the Guardian&#8217;s <em>Hey, what\u2019s that sound<\/em> feature, journalist David McNamee has described the timpani as \u201cThe sound of distant thunder! The noise of tumbling avalanches! The booming heartbeat of the universe!\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While those descriptions are volume-fetishistic, they\u2019re actually <em>true<\/em>. It feels awesome (in both the modern and traditional sense of the word) to witness &#8211; a bone-rattling sensation.
