{"id":7739,"date":"2014-10-10T01:54:22","date_gmt":"2014-10-09T23:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/?p=7739\/"},"modified":"2021-10-26T10:20:43","modified_gmt":"2021-10-26T08:20:43","slug":"dorms-disclosed-collegium-juris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/dorms-disclosed-collegium-juris\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Collegium Juris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vagn Greve, the former dean of the Faculty of Law at University of Copenhagen initially had the idea to build Collegium Juris in 2003 when he started fundraising for the project.<\/p>\n<p>The collegium opened its doors in September 2012 where 50 young residents moved in. The building has been completely renovated, which means all interior is brand new and (almost still) shiny, however the exterior has been kept beautifully antique. The interior architecture and design is quite extraordinary and very modern which is a perfect contrast to the exterior of the dorm. Bamboo is for example a main material used several places in the common areas and the student rooms, all around you\u2019ll find lots of bright and colourful furniture, and each common area is closed off by big glass doors with colourful writing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE THE FULL &#8216;DORMS DISCLOSED&#8217; UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The collegium is situated in the heart of N\u00f8rrebro with Sankt Hans Torv in its backyard.<\/p>\n<h2>Suits and stilettoes&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>\u2026 are not the everyday uniform. Collegium Juris is a place where controversial clich\u00e9s about law students can be put to bed \u2013 and where there is enough room for the residents to represent whichever personality, interests and field of study they have ambitions to pursue.<\/p>\n<p>The collegium houses a majority of law students \u2013 however, almost every one of them has quite different interests within the field which makes the dorm academically vigorous. It is however a board requirement that a minimum of 10 non-law students are represented within the dorm.<\/p>\n<p>The Law students particularly benefit from constructive feedback from each other especially during exam periods. Non-law students on the other hand seem to benefit by always having someone to help out if there\u2019s a need for legal advice \u2013 and isn\u2019t there always a need for legal advice? So far the combination has worked out phenomenally.<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cParlez-you-Dansk\u201d?<\/h2>\n<p>Cross-cultural understanding is a keyword for life at the collegium. No less than 40% of the residents are international and all Danish residents must have some kind of international background.<\/p>\n<p>International residents either study for one or two semesters as part of a normal exchange program, are enrolled in 1 or 2-year LL.M.-programs or work as ph.d. students.<\/p>\n<p>Particularly this part of the collegium is what makes for a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere. Each semester we say our farewells and welcome new nationalities. Even though the collegium is still brand new, it has already become a tradition to send our old residents home and welcome new residents, Danish as well as international, with a gathering for their floor \u2013 mostly including coffee and cake or dinner and drinks.<\/p>\n<p>Collegium Juris is in many ways a vivacious collegium, but it is by far the international feeling between residents that especially creates the pulsating life. I mean who doesn&#8217;t love the combination of an Australian surfer dude serenading the hall on his guitar, a Japanese girl making homemade sushi from her mothers recipe for Sunday dinner, an Ethiopian who always brings back Ethiopian coffee from his trips back home, a<br \/>\nspontaneous Summer October Fest to celebrate our German residents, topped of with a Danish resident cooking a traditional dinner of &#8221;stegt fl\u00e6st med persillesovs&#8221;?<\/p>\n<h2>Beers and briefcases<\/h2>\n<p>It is no secret that you\u2019ll find very ambitious people residing in Collegium Juris. However, this is a place where everyone works hard to play hard!<\/p>\n<p>All the residents are very social and always up for a good time. The basement in the building doesn&#8217;t just work as our study library but also provides huge common rooms where it\u2019s hard not to play beer pong and beer football. Each month the floors take turns as to host themed Friday Bars, which are always a great success, and the themes and preparations get better each time.<\/p>\n<p>Most floors also gather for a common Sunday dinner which residents take turn in preparing. It&#8217;s the definition of family time for everyone. Often the kitchen afterwards becomes a cinema and you\u2019ll find a room full of residents cuddling in fatboys with their dunas eating cookies and popcorn. It\u2019s always a great way to end a busy week.<\/p>\n<p>A Tour de Cuisine is also arranged once a year where each floor is in charge of serving a meal, drinks and preparing games, which normally evolves around a theme \u2013 it&#8217;s Tour de Chambre (which is of course also held each semester) taken to another level.<\/p>\n<h2>Rome wasn\u2019t built in a day<\/h2>\n<p>The premises are brand new, most residents have no dormitory-experience, and the possibilities are indeed endless.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\">\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n<p>There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n<p>Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n<p>In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.<\/p>\n<p>Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews<\/a> we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with &#8216;Dorms Disclosed&#8217; in the subject header.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Where to begin and where to end is never the question here. It\u2019s all about starting and never quite finishing because there is always room for improvement and new additions. The possibilities in being a part of and building the traditions of a new collegium are only limited by your own imagination. There is always room for new ideas \u2013 and one of these came to life in April 2014 when we had our first ever Annual Party. The collegium was gathered for a magical night of reminiscing on the becoming of Collegium Juris and the great collegium it has already developed to be.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2014 we gathered two groups of residents who ran the DHL relay, and most recently we celebrated Collegium Juris&#8217; second birthday.<\/p>\n<p>In the years to come our current and future residents will form the traditions of the collegium. is a dorm almost exclusively for law students. But is it as serious as it sounds? ","use_post_excerpt":false},{"acf_fc_layout":"Byline","is_author":false,"contributors":[{"use_registered_user":false,"user":false,"contributor_name":"Louise Hom\u00f8e","contributor_title":"\u00a0","contributor_image":false}]},{"acf_fc_layout":"Content","content":"<p>Vagn Greve, the former dean of the Faculty of Law at University of Copenhagen initially had the idea to build Collegium Juris in 2003 when he started fundraising for the project.<\/p>\n<p>The collegium opened its doors in September 2012 where 50 young residents moved in. The building has been completely renovated, which means all interior is brand new and (almost still) shiny, however the exterior has been kept beautifully antique. The interior architecture and design is quite extraordinary and very modern which is a perfect contrast to the exterior of the dorm. Bamboo is for example a main material used several places in the common areas and the student rooms, all around you\u2019ll find lots of bright and colourful furniture, and each common area is closed off by big glass doors with colourful writing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE THE FULL &#8216;DORMS DISCLOSED&#8217; UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The collegium is situated in the heart of N\u00f8rrebro with Sankt Hans Torv in its backyard.<\/p>\n<h2>Suits and stilettoes&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>\u2026 are not the everyday uniform. Collegium Juris is a place where controversial clich\u00e9s about law students can be put to bed \u2013 and where there is enough room for the residents to represent whichever personality, interests and field of study they have ambitions to pursue.<\/p>\n<p>The collegium houses a majority of law students \u2013 however, almost every one of them has quite different interests within the field which makes the dorm academically vigorous. It is however a board requirement that a minimum of 10 non-law students are represented within the dorm.<\/p>\n<p>The Law students particularly benefit from constructive feedback from each other especially during exam periods. Non-law students on the other hand seem to benefit by always having someone to help out if there\u2019s a need for legal advice \u2013 and isn\u2019t there always a need for legal advice? So far the combination has worked out phenomenally.<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cParlez-you-Dansk\u201d?<\/h2>\n<p>Cross-cultural understanding is a keyword for life at the collegium. No less than 40% of the residents are international and all Danish residents must have some kind of international background.<\/p>\n<p>International residents either study for one or two semesters as part of a normal exchange program, are enrolled in 1 or 2-year LL.M.-programs or work as ph.d. students.<\/p>\n<p>Particularly this part of the collegium is what makes for a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere. Each semester we say our farewells and welcome new nationalities. Even though the collegium is still brand new, it has already become a tradition to send our old residents home and welcome new residents, Danish as well as international, with a gathering for their floor \u2013 mostly including coffee and cake or dinner and drinks.<\/p>\n<p>Collegium Juris is in many ways a vivacious collegium, but it is by far the international feeling between residents that especially creates the pulsating life. I mean who doesn&#8217;t love the combination of an Australian surfer dude serenading the hall on his guitar, a Japanese girl making homemade sushi from her mothers recipe for Sunday dinner, an Ethiopian who always brings back Ethiopian coffee from his trips back home, a<br \/>\nspontaneous Summer October Fest to celebrate our German residents, topped of with a Danish resident cooking a traditional dinner of &#8221;stegt fl\u00e6st med persillesovs&#8221;?<\/p>\n<h2>Beers and briefcases<\/h2>\n<p>It is no secret that you\u2019ll find very ambitious people residing in Collegium Juris. However, this is a place where everyone works hard to play hard!<\/p>\n<p>All the residents are very social and always up for a good time. The basement in the building doesn&#8217;t just work as our study library but also provides huge common rooms where it\u2019s hard not to play beer pong and beer football. Each month the floors take turns as to host themed Friday Bars, which are always a great success, and the themes and preparations get better each time.<\/p>\n<p>Most floors also gather for a common Sunday dinner which residents take turn in preparing. It&#8217;s the definition of family time for everyone. Often the kitchen afterwards becomes a cinema and you\u2019ll find a room full of residents cuddling in fatboys with their dunas eating cookies and popcorn. It\u2019s always a great way to end a busy week.<\/p>\n<p>A Tour de Cuisine is also arranged once a year where each floor is in charge of serving a meal, drinks and preparing games, which normally evolves around a theme \u2013 it&#8217;s Tour de Chambre (which is of course also held each semester) taken to another level.<\/p>\n<h2>Rome wasn\u2019t built in a day<\/h2>\n<p>The premises are brand new, most residents have no dormitory-experience, and the possibilities are indeed endless.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\">\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n<p>There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n<p>Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n<p>In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.<\/p>\n<p>Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews<\/a> we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with &#8216;Dorms Disclosed&#8217; in the subject header.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Where to begin and where to end is never the question here. It\u2019s all about starting and never quite finishing because there is always room for improvement and new additions. The possibilities in being a part of and building the traditions of a new collegium are only limited by your own imagination. There is always room for new ideas \u2013 and one of these came to life in April 2014 when we had our first ever Annual Party. The collegium was gathered for a magical night of reminiscing on the becoming of Collegium Juris and the great collegium it has already developed to be.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2014 we gathered two groups of residents who ran the DHL relay, and most recently we celebrated Collegium Juris&#8217; second birthday.<\/p>\n<p>In the years to come our current and future residents will form the traditions of the collegium. The 11 m2 rooms all come with private bathrooms while kitchens are shared. Rooms are between 12 and 27 m2 and the price is reasonable. The rooms are between 14.6-56 m2 and have private bathrooms. The kitchen is shared. The dorm has a very modern interior and has purposely kept an antique exterior, which creates a fascinating contrast. The vibe is very international as 40 % of the students are from abroad. It is also a very social environment and is known for its common Sunday dinners and themed Friday bar nights. They have built their own chicken coop, which also functions as a bar! Hagemanns Kollegium<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nThe luxurious G. A. Hagemanns Kollegium boasts its own private chef, a grand piano, and two of J. F. Willumsen's most famous paintings. According to one of our reviewers it is something for both geeks and partygoers.\r\n\r\nThe rent may be high but it includes all your meals. In this dormitory you can get a 15-20 m2 room in a large mansion in \u00d8sterbro that you will share with 60 other residents. Common facilities are many: a large dining hall, TV-room and a study hall overlooking \u00d8resund. The rooms vary from 14-18 m2 and each comes with a private bathroom. This gives the dorm a distinctly international flavor. Rooms are between 17-26 m2 with big windows. The rooms are private and include a bathroom and a kitchenette. Each floor has a common kitchen and much of the social life centers around them as well as the roof terrace. Although they are not free, the dorm also has laundry facilities. Maj Kollegiet and Hassagers Kollegium<\/h3>\r\nThe \u20184th May dorm\u2019 was founded almost 70 years ago to house the descendants of Danish World War Two resistance members. History is tangible here, although the requirement of being related to the Danish resistance has been relaxed of late.\r\n\r\nLike a set of nesting dolls, the 4. Maj Kollegiet (see above) has another dormitory within it, namely the tiny Hassagers Kollegium, which is home to only 10 students.\r\n\r\nRead the review of\u00a0 the twin residence halls 4. Maj Kollegiet and Hassagers Kollegium \u2014 dorms within a dorm<\/a><\/strong>\r\n<h2>Inner city<\/h2>\r\n<h3><strong>Regensen<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nRegensen dates back to 1623, and about 100 students share a large, old and very beautiful building just next to Rundet\u00e5rn. Rooms vary greatly in size, from 11-25 m2, but the price remains a staggeringly low. Other than a room, you gain access to a great number of common spaces and activities: from a large ballroom to a library and study hall. The dorm has garden days, mushroom-picking trips, and a strong sense of community spirit. But the price does not reflect quality, and this dormitory is actually an old house with a beautiful garden in the heart of city center. This is one of the most unique dormitories in Denmark, in the middle of a forest and close to a lake. The houses are built of logs and the residents each have 10m2 with shared kitchens and bathrooms. Preference for law students.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\nBehind the slightly anonymous fa\u00e7ade from the year 1917, without even a name on the dormitory, a mix of Danish and international students share their daily life (and kitchen \u2013 but not toilet and shower!) with each other. The residence hall opened in 2012 after a renovation by the same company that did the Tietgenkollegiet in the Amager district.\r\n<h3>You have to have a grade average of seven ... but go ahead and apply anyway<\/h3>\r\nCollegium Juris was initially founded with the purpose of being both academic, and international.\r\n\r\n\u00bbAt the same time, it is also a social dorm, of course,\u00ab says resident Henriette Lyngkrogh. It makes a difference. I moved in during the corona crisis, so I walked into a bubble that had become like a small family who just went about taking care of each other.\u00ab\r\n<div class=\"factbox\">\r\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\r\nThere are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.\r\n\r\nSome are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.\r\n\r\nThis is a review by a student reporter. But in the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.\r\n\r\nHere is <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews<\/a> we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.\r\n\r\nIf you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\nThe residents get to know each other through the course of their daily lives, but also at film evenings, parties, and sit-down dinners, including international dinners, where the many exchange students' cooking skills are exploited to the fullest. One resident from Mexico, for example, brought grasshopper salt and worm salt to Henriette Lyngkrogh's kitchen. Feast days and public holidays from different countries are often celebrated in the kitchens, and football matches are more exciting than usual when you root for different countries' teams, says Henriette Lyngkrogh.\r\n\r\nThe rooms, which are all equipped with their own toilet and bathroom, vary in size, and the monthly rent is between DKK 4,000 and DKK 5,800. Residents have, in addition, access to a communal kitchen on each floor, where each of the residents\u2019 cupboards is decorated in dorm style with newspaper clippings and pictures that showpiece the owner. The kitchen also serves as a living room with a couch and TV, and there is a common room, washroom, training room, and reading room in the basement. The first floor has a balcony with a barbecue, and a hammock that opens out to the residence hall's communal green garden.\r\n\r\nThe communal rooms are also used for the annual gala ceremony, where the guests, apart from the residents themselves, include alumni. The speaker last year was lawyer and debater Jacob Mchangama. At the 'Fellow's Day', which is held annually, the residents hand out positions in the various social and academic committees that organise dormitory life.\r\n\r\n\u00bbThe people we get in are people who really want to take the initiative and do some partying. The people who would like to live here for the life of a dorm student and not just to have a room.\u00ab\r\n\r\nYou do not need to clean anything else than your own room. CPH Studio Hotel boasted ''modern, functionalist-inspired architecture''. It promised ''several excellent facilities'', such as a gym, a lounge-area, a ''well-equipped'' laundry room, a common caf\u00e9\/kitchen area for breakfast, and later, a restaurant. It told tales of rooms of ''the highest quality''.\r\n<h2>The building<\/h2>\r\nWhat students arrived to on September 2, 2015, was quite different. From 16:00 to 03:00, there were hordes of people outside the building, soaking up free beer and pizza provided as compensation by the staff. There was machinery. There were exposed rooms, possessing neither windows nor walls. There was those steel things that hold up buildings. It was a real mess.\r\n\r\nSlowly, but surely, the workmen managed to straighten out the building. It is now less like the abandoned prison of before. At one point, a security guard showed up, making it seem more like an actual, unabandoned prison. But no more.\r\n\r\nNow, the long corridors, partially furnished rooms, and spooky, glass roof terrace all contribute to a general feeling that I am on a large naval or cruise ship. I am a sailor. My cabin is one, but there are many. There is no wi-fi on my floor, but they\u2019re working on it. There is a small playpark next door that I didn\u2019t realize was there. Frankly, it is OK.\r\n<h2>The room<\/h2>\r\nWhat\u2019s in a room? Well, as the international student experience of CPH Studio Hotel has clearly demonstrated, it really depends on the room.\r\n\r\nLike many others, my room was not ready when I arrived at CPH Studio Hotel. I shared a room for a couple of nights with a good friend of mine - a reasonably enjoyable, if inconvenient, experience that for me was more or less alleviated by the promise of EUR 200 compensation. After that, I was shuttled into various rooms I didn\u2019t stay in, on account of being out too late, and finally I was given my room.\r\n\r\nWhen I was young, I had a shared bedroom with my younger sister. There was a bunkbed. One particular night terror involving sleep paralysis and the ghost of E.T. had, then, long since taught me the perils of sleeping on the top bunk, close to the ceiling, where you\u2019re only one sit-up from faceplanting a plaster stalagtite.\r\n\r\nThus it was so that I signed up to the \u2018A\u2019 bed in my shared room - the one on the futon by the window.\r\n\r\nAlthough the windows had no blinds and the sun was in my face all day and night, I luckily had brought a sleepmask along to Denmark from where I had lived before, where it was necessary to cover my eyes from perpetual sunlight. The sleepmask system worked great, until one of the builders accidentally vacuumed it up. He was very worried, but sleepmasks are cheap and Hoovers are powerful. I went and bought another. I still have no blinds.\r\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\r\n<div class=\"title\">\r\n<div class=\"label\">Read also: <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/media-students-cant-register-address-at-krimsvej-dorm\/\">Media: Students can't register address at Krimsvej dorm<\/a><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"teaser_text\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>The utilities<\/h2>\r\nThe bathroom is exceptionally ill-designed. A concrete wetroom housed in an MDF cardboard box, the ventilation system does not really cope with the pretty obvious problem that condensation poses for wood. (Look it up.) The sink is too small for my giant face. The water does not really flow downhill to the drain - it just sits there. However, yesterday\u2019s recent discovery of a SECRET CABINET BEHIND A MIRROR (!) made things much better. Now I feel like Toothpaste James Bond.\r\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\r\n<div class=\"image\">\r\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\">After being promised a kitchenette, it was rather underwhelming to discover that, in Denmark, ''kitchenette'' translates to a single, electric hotplate; some pans; a fridge; an MDF frame\/desk\/thing; and cutlery. I really like to cook, so this isn\u2019t ideal - although we have been promised extra hotplates.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\nHowever, it\u2019s not all so bad. After I vacuumed the dust from the room and proceeded to spruce it up with some useless, colourful tat from a popular emporium of plastic nonsense, my room actually began to feel a bit like an actual, real place. For example: I have a rug now. This is unprecedented. A real rug of my very own \u2013 and it really does tie the room together. There are many people out there who do not have their very own rugs in their very own building site units, and I feel marginally lucky.\r\n\r\nAs well as this: the blank, alienating grey expanse of the room is a real canvas for whichever false illusions you may have about how that colour-change LED Buddha statue you bought from Tiger just says so much about you. Make it your own - it isn\u2019t as terrible as it seems.\r\n<h2>Verdict: 3\/5 \u2013 It\u2019s getting better all the time<\/h2>\r\nOkay, so the rooms are austere. There are strange, although pleasant men with machines, who wake you up at odd hours with their reasonably quiet door-knocking. You feel like you\u2019re sneezing a bit more than usual because of the dust. The sun is in your face the whole day and night. Worst of all, you have to live in a building site full of people who have clearly never slept anywhere worse than a building site.\r\n\r\nHaving said that, let\u2019s look on the bright side. The sun is out, sometimes. LIDL is just around the corner. Living next to the metro station makes you feel geographically relevant. There\u2019s a very pleasant beach nearby. You could be sleeping under a bridge. You could be sleeping on the cold, concrete patio of a cricket ground with a single duvet between 5 of you. You could be 14 years old again. You could be dead.\r\n<div class=\"factbox\">\r\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\r\nThere are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.\r\n\r\nSome are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.\r\n\r\nThis is a review by a student reporter. When do we ever get what we pay for? Have you ever paid for a holiday? Rented a car from a strange man who demands you just ''leave the cash on the front seat after you\u2019re done''? Have you ever been to a Sting concert? Been to British university? These sorts of terrible rip-offs are the things that bring people together. I\u2019ve seen people giving each other beds for the night, lending them useless thumbtacks, and giving them bed linen. I\u2019ve seen friendships forged in the fire of an unfinished building. I\u2019ve seen things.\r\n\r\nLet me tell you, you will never get a refund from Sting - just a cold, hard, toothy smile. CPH Studio Hotel, on the other hand, is a shining beacon of effort and hard work - supremely inadequate and sluggish hard work, but hard work nonetheless. Moaning is not going to speed anything up. I am sure the staff and Housing Foundation people are just as stressed, annoyed, and worried about the construction delays as you are. Have you seen them lately? They look exhausted.\r\n<h2>Not the staff's fault<\/h2>\r\nTo be honest, the passive-aggressive Facebook comments made by some affected residents, accusing the staff, who are trying to improve the situation as best they can, of everything from wholly deliberate deception, up to and including fraud, illegal contractual violations (with some truth), and being totally evil, demonstrates a clear lack of empathy and understanding with the people who, while having perhaps played a major unintentional role in your mild, short-term discomfort, are the only five or so people who are doing anything to try and help a collection of 300-odd people all with their own individual problems.\r\n\r\nYes, things suck. Everything is terrible. Life is hard. But to quote Field of Dreams: if you build it, they will come. And if you haven\u2019t really built it, not yet, they will still come - they\u2019re contractually obliged to. Two months\u2019 rent refund and an added cash bonus might not be enough. Maybe we deserve more, but we forget that, in all the mess, that one bright day, we too might have the ghosts of dead baseball players hitting and pitching in our corridors, up against those glass doors.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, you\u2019re having a real experience here, okay? You have an interesting anecdote to tell other people. You have a thing.\r\n\r\n''My house isn\u2019t built yet,'' you say. ''I live in a darkened room without curtains. The dormitory is down the road from N\u00f8rrebro\u2019s trendy cafes and hipster covered bridges, and 10 minutes by bus or 15 by cycle from the hustle and bustle of N\u00f8rreport. Its convenient location is by far one of its strong points.\r\n\r\nWith 469 student rooms and a mix of single and couple en-suites, the exact population of this concrete village is hard to establish. Single rooms are about 11 square meters with joint bathroom and toilet facilities with one other person, couples have the option of a couple\u2019s room, which is basically an en-suite at 26 square meters. A leftover from when Egmont was once a hotel.\r\n\r\n<strong>SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen<\/a><\/strong>\r\n<h2>Chocolate milk structure<\/h2>\r\nAn average corridor will house about 20-24 students (there are 22 corridors spread across 3 buildings) with one shared kitchen per corridor, though you\u2019d never guess it.\r\n\r\nEvery kitchen has their own cleaning rota and standards, in ours, the Artiz man or woman for the day clears the place up at night, making sure it\u2019s in a relatively hygienic state for the next morning. Every kitchen is decked out with a communal fridge loaded with beers, cokes, and chocolate milk that is replenished on a Thursday in the basement, when the empty bottles are returned for recycling.\r\n\r\nTo purchase a drink in our corridor you simply scan the barcode of your drink and your personal bedroom barcode, though every kitchen has their own method of doing this. Your drinks are added to your bedroom tab, and the corridor accountant sends you your bill over the next few months, together with all the other contributions, such as the Food Club. The drinks fridge somehow works, there\u2019s a huge element of trust here in Egmont, which is pretty much absent in many British universities.\r\n<h2>A compact village<\/h2>\r\nThere is a 'madklub', directly translated to \u2018food club\u2019, every night where someone cooks for everyone who signs up on the corridor website. Normally about 12-14 people will join. It is very rare that the entire corridor expect to be fed unless it\u2019s a special Easter or Christmas dinner.\r\n\r\nEgmont is your mother, and pretty much takes care of the small as well as the big, from toilet paper and light bulbs to new dish cloths on a Tuesday to renting out furniture if necessary. It comes with so many comfortable perks, leaving you to never think about the mundane.\r\n\r\nThe Kollegium often resembles a compact village, the basement snakes round with all sorts of amenities like a bike workshop, a sauna, a gym, both a laundry room and drying room, study rooms, printers and photocopiers, chill out lounges equipped with projectors and pool tables, and music rooms. There\u2019s a clothes bin where discarded clothes are left, if you get there early they are yours to take, if you don\u2019t they\u2019re cleaned and put on sale in the Egmont thrift shop. Outside there\u2019s a bike shed, and BBQ patios as well as communal garden space where Egmonters sunbathe in Copenhagen\u2019s 10 degrees.\r\n<h2>You will need a calendar<\/h2>\r\nSports facilities can be found with the Basketball court, table tennis, foosball, petanque area and of course with F\u00e6lledparken opposite. There are two football teams, male and female, appropriately named the \u2018Breezers\u2019 and \u2018the Hangovers\u2019.\r\n\r\nFor those less sports-inclined there\u2019s a creativity room for arts and crafts, a beer brewing association, a newspaper and a newsletter and the odd capoiera to participate in. Egmont even has its own annual 3 day festival, which takes place in August.\r\n\r\nAside from this, the Egmont calendar is dotted with traditions and unique gatherings, such as the 'vennerfest' (party for outside friends), Giraffe party, the gala party, the tour-de-chambre...the list goes on. Every week a different corridor hosts the cafe, and voluntarily works behind the bar and sets the theme and playlist of the night.\r\n<h2>Lifetime deal once you're in<\/h2>\r\nGetting into Egmont is pretty difficult; a small resident council headed by a dean or principal approves your application. It\u2019s a place that prides itself on socialising, and being a social creature is part of the requirement in getting in. There\u2019s a real communal atmosphere: Egmonters wear their dormitory as a badge of identity, which has a near legendary status, most Egmonters still host reunion parties for the 50s and over and the cupboard rooms are filled with logbooks from the 1970s.\r\n\r\nThere\u2019s a sense of everyone mucking in together, and you\u2019re expected to play an active role in your corridor\u2019s parties, events and meetings. Detail is everything and you will see people go to extraordinary lengths to make dinners and gatherings perfect.\r\n\r\nI realise that I\u2019ve been very lucky to get a place here, the rent is cheap and it\u2019s got loads of charm and character. You won\u2019t see many foreign exchange students around here; the ratio is in favour of the Danes. But for me personally, that\u2019s what makes this place so attractive as a foreign exchange student, it provides me with that opportunity to mingle with Danish students and get a real feel for living in Denmark, something that is not always guaranteed on exchange.
