
{"id":84626,"date":"2019-04-11T10:26:18","date_gmt":"2019-04-11T08:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/?p=84626\/"},"modified":"2019-04-11T10:40:50","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T08:40:50","slug":"weekly-intel-itu-wins-danish-open-access-race-fungus-growing-ants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/weekly-intel-itu-wins-danish-open-access-race-fungus-growing-ants\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly Intel: ITU wins Danish open access race \/ Fungus-growing ants"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>IT university wins Danish race to go 100 per cent open access<\/h1>\n<p>As the first Danish university, the IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) now has <a href=\"https:\/\/en.itu.dk\/about-itu\/press\/news-from-itu\/2019\/itu-research-is-100-percent-open-access\">100 percent of all its research articles &#8216;open access&#8217; or freely available online.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a report, the European University Association recently estimated that European universities, by moving to an Open Access system, could save approximately DKK 1.27 billion a year. \u00a0At present, half of all scientific journals are in the hands of five large companies (RELX Group (owner of Elsevier), Wiley-Blackwell, Nature, SAGE and Taylor &amp; Francis), who are alleged to<a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/800-european-universities-ask-the-eu-commissioner-to-help-them-fight-the-big-journals\/\"> skim monopoly-size profits from universities and taxpayers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThe fact we have achieved this already,\u00ab says prorector at ITU Jens Christian Godskesen, \u00bbis due to a targeted effort over the last few years, where we have increased the quality of the registration of publications. In many cases, research publications can be accessed directly from ITU\u2019s website. It is in large part due to the effort of all of our researchers and research administration that we are already fulfilling the objective of Denmark&#8217;s National Strategy for Open Access.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>With 64 percent, DTU has the second largest share of Open Access publications, followed by CBS with 48 percent.<\/p>\n<h1>UCPH open access up, but still only at 40 per cent<\/h1>\n<div id=\"attachment_84650\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><picture data-class=\"wp-image-84650\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1041px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/download.png 1200w\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/download-990x495.png 990w\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/download-768x384.png 768w\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 401px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/download-700x350.png 700w\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 401px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/download-480x240.png 480w\"\/><source  srcset=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/download-290x145.png 290w\"\/><img src=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/download-700x350.png\" class=\"wp-image-84650\"  loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84650\"   alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"500\"  sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/picture><p id=\"caption-attachment-84650\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Share of University of Copenhagen articles that are Open Access, according to the latest Open Access Indicator.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The University of Copenhagen increased its share of Open Access by 13 percentage points last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oaindikator.dk\/da\/overview\/national\">but is still only at 40 per cent according to the data on the Open Access Indicator measurement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Danish universities are generally getting better at opening access to their scientific publications. The number of scientific articles made freely available on the Internet, has increased by 8 percentage points, from 36 per cent to 44 per cent in a year. The highest degree of open access is science\/technology, which will increase by 11 percentage points from 42 per cent to 53 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>21 per cent of articles are <a href=\"https:\/\/ufm.dk\/aktuelt\/nyheder\/2019\/universiteter-bliver-stadigt-bedre-til-at-skabe-open-access\">blocked for open access, according to the indicator,<\/a> because the publishers do not permit it, or because they have set embargo periods for their release which go beyond one year. In some cases the embargo holds for several years.<\/p>\n<p>In its latest national strategy for open access from 2018, open access is to be carried out without increasing costs the costs of publication of scientific results.<\/p>\n<h1>Finland: Foreign students tangled up in red tape<\/h1>\n<p>Applicants from foreign universities are hampered by needless bureaucracy and immigration policy, <a href=\"https:\/\/yle.fi\/uutiset\/osasto\/news\/universities_claim_foreign_student_enrolment_stymied_by_residence_permit_red_tape\/10712933\">reports\u00a0Yle, citing a survey of Finnish universities<\/a>. They don&#8217;t consume the leaves they collect. Their food does, and the industrial-scale leave-cutting supports the ants&#8217; farming industry.<\/p>\n<p>Both human and ant agriculture face similar challenges, particularly keeping their crop disease-free. Both humans and ants employ antimicrobial compounds. In fact, previous research found that ants\u00a0carried antibiotic compounds\u00a0in specialized structures on the underside of their bodies.<\/p>\n<p><em>Write to miy@adm.ku.dk if you have any ideas, open access<\/h1>\n<p>As the first Danish university, the IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) now has <a href=\"https:\/\/en.itu.dk\/about-itu\/press\/news-from-itu\/2019\/itu-research-is-100-percent-open-access\">100 percent of all its research articles &#8216;open access&#8217; or freely available online.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a report, the European University Association recently estimated that European universities, by moving to an Open Access system, could save approximately DKK 1.27 billion a year. \u00a0At present, half of all scientific journals are in the hands of five large companies (RELX Group (owner of Elsevier), Wiley-Blackwell, Nature, SAGE and Taylor &amp; Francis), who are alleged to<a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/800-european-universities-ask-the-eu-commissioner-to-help-them-fight-the-big-journals\/\"> skim monopoly-size profits from universities and taxpayers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThe fact we have achieved this already,\u00ab says prorector at ITU Jens Christian Godskesen, \u00bbis due to a targeted effort over the last few years, where we have increased the quality of the registration of publications. In many cases, research publications can be accessed directly from ITU\u2019s website. The number of scientific articles made freely available on the Internet, has increased by 8 percentage points, from 36 per cent to 44 per cent in a year. The highest degree of open access is science\/technology, which will increase by 11 percentage points from 42 per cent to 53 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>21 per cent of articles are <a href=\"https:\/\/ufm.dk\/aktuelt\/nyheder\/2019\/universiteter-bliver-stadigt-bedre-til-at-skabe-open-access\">blocked for open access, according to the indicator,<\/a> because the publishers do not permit it, or because they have set embargo periods for their release which go beyond one year. In some cases the embargo holds for several years.<\/p>\n<p>In its latest national strategy for open access from 2018, open access is to be carried out without increasing costs the costs of publication of scientific results.<\/p>\n<h1>Finland: Foreign students tangled up in red tape<\/h1>\n<p>Applicants from foreign universities are hampered by needless bureaucracy and immigration policy, <a href=\"https:\/\/yle.fi\/uutiset\/osasto\/news\/universities_claim_foreign_student_enrolment_stymied_by_residence_permit_red_tape\/10712933\">reports\u00a0Yle, citing a survey of Finnish universities<\/a>. The scientists\u2019 study has just been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences\u00a0(PNAS).<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbAs previous calculations of biodiversity change in deep time have been based on a time-binning partitioning divided into 10\u201411 million year intervals, direct comparisons with climate impacts have not been possible. They don&#8217;t consume the leaves they collect. Their food does, and the industrial-scale leave-cutting supports the ants&#8217; farming industry.<\/p>\n<p>Both human and ant agriculture face similar challenges, particularly keeping their crop disease-free. Both humans and ants employ antimicrobial compounds.
